Abstract:A planar hyper-lens, capable of creating sub-wavelength imaging for broadband electromagnetic wave, is designed based on electromagnetic null medium. Subsequently, a scheme for the implementation of the proposed hyper-lens is given by using well-designed flexural metal plates, which function as the reduced electromagnetic null medium for TM-polarized microwaves. Both simulated and measured results verify that the hyper-lens designed with flexural metal plates can achieve super-resolution imaging for microwave at operating wavelength ({\lambda}0=3cm) with a resolution of 0.25{\lambda}0 and a uniform magnification of about 5. Moreover, the designed hyper-lens ensures that both the object and image surfaces are planes, and simultaneously provides a uniform magnification for objects in different positions. Additionally, the proposed hyper-lens offers a broadband super-resolution imaging capabilities, achieving good super-resolution imaging effects for microwave frequencies ranging from 8.5 to 11 GHz. The proposed hyper-lens may find applications in high precision imaging, detection, and sensing.

Abstract:Luneburg lenses are able to form perfect focus that is free of aberration. Because of the varying refractive index throughout the lens, incoming electromagnetic waves can travel in a curved path and be guided to focus at the back of the lens. The implementation of Luneburg lenses is often difficult due to the challenges in creating a medium with varying refractive index using normal materials. This problem can be overcome with the use of gradient index metamaterials. We report a two dimensional Luneburg lens made of gradient index metamaterials. It consists of 17 concentric shells with etched patterns on a printed circuit board working in microwave X band frequency. The broad properties of the Luneburg lens are then discussed. Abstract:Focusing of ultrasonic waves in water plays an important role in various scenarios ranging from biomedical imaging to nondestructive testing. Acoustic metasurfaces have been largely explored for acoustic focusing, but they are generally narrowband and mainly implemented for airborne sound because of their structural complexity. Nevertheless, our previous development of metasurfaces provides a great opportunity to solve the challenges. Here, we present numerically and experimentally the broadband focusing of ultrasonic waves in water with a metasurface lens consisting of an array of deep-subwavelength sized and spaced slots. The slot widths of the metasurface are optimized based on microscopic coupled-wave theory. Due to the non-resonant arrangement, the focusing effect is demonstrated over a broad band of frequencies. The metasurface lens with simplicity and an ultra-compact size provides a feasible means for the design of thin and lightweight ultrasonic devices and is suitable for practical applications in biomedical and industrial fields.
Focusing a beam beyond the diffraction limit using a hyperlens-based device

Abstract:A super-focusing device composed of a focusing objective and a hyperlens is proposed to focus an incident plane wave into the deep subwavelength dimension. In the device, the objective converts the incident plane wave into a convergent one. The half cylindrical hyperlens can support high wave vector k modes propagating towards its core. So the convergent wave can be focused into an ultrasmall spot beyond the diffraction limit. The layout is proposed for the super-focusing device and its characteristics are investigated theoretically. Numerical simulations verify that the focused beams are confined in a spot with a diameter of 16.3 nm in the focal plane of the focusing objective with a numerical aperture of 0.6, which corresponds to a super-resolution spot of lambda(0)/23 (lambda(0) is the wavelength in vacuum). The simulations confirm the effectiveness of the proposed device.

Abstract:Subdiffraction focusing of acoustic waves in the near-field can remarkably improve the signal-to-noise ratio in super-resolution acoustic imaging. Recently, we have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of near-field focusing with groove-structured lens. However, as a very critical step toward practical applications, the broadband characterization of the near-field focusing lens remains unexplored. In this study, we numerically and experimentally characterize the broadband performance of the near-field lens for subdiffraction sound focusing. The simulated and measured results agree well, both of which confirm that the near-field focusing works well over broadband. Furthermore, we find that the range and symmetry of the working bandwidth were largely influenced by the profound effect of groove depth on the excitation of evanescent waves. This study aims to advance the practical applications of the simple ultracompact lens in various areas of acoustics.
High Efficient Metasurface for Broadband Achromatic Focusing in Visible Spectrum

Abstract:Metasurfaces are expected to realize the miniaturization of conventional refractive optics into planar structures; however, they suffer from large chromatic aberration due to the high phase dispersion of their subwavelength building blocks, limiting their real applications in imaging and displaying systems. In this paper, a high-efficient broadband achromatic metasurface (HBAM) is designed and numerically demonstrated to suppress the chromatic aberration in the continuous visible spectrum. The HBAM consists of TiO2 nanofins as the metasurface building blocks (MBBs) on a layer of glass as the substrate, providing a broadband response and high polarization conversion efficiency for circularly polarized incidences in the desired bandwidth. The phase profile of the metasurface can be separated into two parts: the wavelength -independent basic phase distribution represented by the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase, depending only on the orientations of the MBBs, and the wavelength-dependent phase dispersion part. The HBAM applies resonance tuning for compensating the phase dispersion, and further eliminates the chromatic aberration by integrating the phase compensation into the PB phase manipulation. The parameters of the HBAM structures are optimized in finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation for enhancing the efficiency and achromatic focusing performance. Using this approach, this HBAM is capable of focusing light of wavelengths covering the entire visible spectrum (from 400 nm to 700 nm) at the same focal plane with the spot sizes close to the diffraction limit. The minimum polarization conversion efficiency of most designed MBBS in such spectrum is above 20%. This design could be viable for various practical applications such as cameras and wearable optics.
Planar Focusing Lens for Enhanced Far-Field Ultrasonic Imaging.

Abstract:This paper presents a far-field enhanced-resolution underwater ultrasonic imaging on the basis of a single-slit structured planar focusing lens. The iterative angular spectrum approach was employed to optimize the planar focusing lens from a designated focal pattern, characterized by focal length and full width at half maxima. Numerical simulations and experimental investigations were conducted on different target objects. Compared to the conventional method, both results showed that the performance of far-field ultrasonic imaging was comprehensively enhanced with the proposed planar focusing lens, in terms of resolving capability, working distance, operational bandwidth, and robustness. The single-slit structured planar focusing lens is cost effective and easy to fabricate, which would greatly benefit ultrasonic imaging and drive new applications of ultrasound in various scenarios.

Abstract:Previous subwavelength imaging using hyperlens is based on negative constitutive parameters that are realized by strongly dispersive materials and work only in a narrow frequency band. Here, we demonstrated that subwavelength imaging can be achieved in a broad frequency band using non-resonant magnetic metamaterials. The metamaterial shows an elliptical dispersion relation and can be fabricated by metallic closed-rings with a broadband magnetic response. With this elliptically dispersive material, most of the evanescent waves with high-k modes can be converted to propagating modes and the subwavelength information is reconstructed. Both simulation and experiment results show that this kind of metalens can achieve a broadband subwavelength imaging effect.

Abstract:Hyperlens and superlens have been proven to overcome the “diffraction limit” to achieve subwavelength imaging. Previous works have done great performance, but they need one or more negative constitutive parameters, which are realized by metamaterials with resonance structures and can only work well for narrowband. In this letter, we design an improved microwave hyperlens which can be effective for a wideband using the metamaterials composed of closed-rings, with all the constitutive parameters positive. Both the simulation and experiment results show that we can use this kind of hyperlens to achieve subwavelength imaging with resolution up to 1/12 the vacuum wavelength.

Abstract:A hyper-lens with planar object/image surfaces and uniform magnification factor is designed based on directional projecting property of optic-null medium (ONM). The proposed planar hyper-lens only requires one homogeneous anisotropic medium, i.e. ONM. We use metallic plates inside ϵ-near-zero medium to realize the proposed hyper-lens. 0.191λ 0 resolution is observed (0.238λ 0 can be clearly resolved) in experimental measurement, which consists very well with 3D numerical simulations and verifies the performance of the proposed planar hyper-lens. The planar hyper-lens with uniform pre-designed magnification factor may have some applications in super-resolution imaging technology.

Abstract:The solid immersion lens is a powerful optical tool that allows light entering material from air or vacuum to focus to a spot much smaller than the free-space wavelength. Conventionally, however, they rely on semispherical topographies and are non-planar and bulky, which limits their integration in many applications. Recently, there has been considerable interest in using planar structures, referred to as metasurfaces, to construct flat optical components for manipulating light in unusual ways. Here, we propose and demonstrate the concept of a planar immersion lens based on metasurfaces. The resulting planar device, when placed near an interface between air and dielectric material, can focus electromagnetic radiation incident from air to a spot in material smaller than the free-space wavelength. As an experimental demonstration, we fabricate an ultrathin and flexible microwave lens and further show that it achieves wireless energy transfer in material mimicking biological tissue.

Broadband and high-numerical-aperture sharp focusing for waterborne sound with metagrating-based lens

Abstract:Metalens with broadband and high-efficiency focusing functionality is desired in various underwater acoustic applications such as sonar and oceanography. Here we design and demonstrate a metagrating-based lens consisting of spatially sparse and wavelength-scale meta-atoms with optimized structures. With the help of grating diffraction analysis and intelligent optimization algorithm, the reflective metalens enables broadband and high-numerical-aperture focusing for waterborne sound over a 40 kHz-bandwidth for working frequency at 200 kHz. Full-wave numerical simulations unambiguously verify a sharp and high-efficiency focusing of sound wave intensity, with the full width at half maximum (FWHM) at the focal spot being smaller than 0.5λ and thus beating the Rayleigh-Abbe diffraction limit. Our work not only provides an intelligent design paradigm of high-performance metalens, but also presents a potential solution for the development of planar acoustic devices for high-resolution applications.

Acoustic Planar Hyperlens Based On Anisotropic Density-Near-Zero Metamaterials

Abstract:Based on anisotropic density-near-zero metamaterials, we demonstrate a planar hyperlens with resolution beyond the diffraction limit in both one and two lateral dimensions. In contrast to the cylindrical hyperlens with elliptical dispersions of finite anisotropy, the proposed planar hyperlens is designed with flat near-zero dispersion that supports wave tunneling with extremely high phase velocity for infinite large transverse wave vectors. Therefore, the acoustic evanescent waves immediately concentrate into the designed oblique path till the output surface, leading to a subwavelength resolution. Prototype hyperlens is constructed with a membrane-network by means of equivalent lumped-circuit model, and the subwavelength magnifying performance for a pair of one-dimensional line objects as well as the complex two-dimensional structure is demonstrated. This method provides diverse routes to construct hyperlens operating without the limitation on imaging region in practical applications. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.
Broadband Achromatic Polarization Insensitive Metalens Design in the Near-Infrared Spectrum

Abstract:Over the past decade, metalens exhibit great potential for applications in compact optical devices. By modulating the phase, amplitude and polarization of the incident light, metalens are applied in a variety of flat optical components, such as micro spectrometers, polarizers and light-field imaging. However, the intrinsic effect of metalens with large chromatic aberration significantly restricts its application in wide-spectrum imaging. Herein, we developed a broadband achromatic polarization insensitive metalens operating in the NIR region in transmission mode. The particle swarm algorithm was utilized to improve the wave aberration by optimizing the reference phase corresponds to each designed wavelength. FDTD simulation was conducted to characterize the focusing performance of the metalens. The focal length of the metalens changes less than 4µm as the incident wavelength is varied from 1µm to 1.4µm. The maximum focusing efficiency of the designed metalens with a numerical aperture of 0.45 is about 43% near wavelength λ = 1.33µm. This research also paves a way for the application of metalens in night vision imaging.

Abstract:We demonstrate imaging over the visible band using a single planar diffractive lens. This is enabled via multi-level diffractive optics that is designed to focus over a broad wavelength range, which we refer to as an achromatic diffractive lens (ADL). We designed, fabricated and characterized two ADLs with numerical apertures of 0.05 and 0.18. Diffraction-limited focusing is demonstrated for the NA = 0.05 lens with measured focusing efficiency of over 40% across the entire visible spectrum (450 nm to 750 nm). We characterized the lenses with a monochromatic and a color CMOS sensor, and demonstrated video imaging under natural sunlight and other broadband illumination conditions. We use rigorous electromagnetic simulations to emphasize that ADLs can achieve high NA (0.9) and large operating bandwidth (300 nm in the visible spectrum), a combination of metrics that have so far eluded other flat-lens technologies such as metalenses. These planar diffractive lenses can be cost-effectively manufactured over large areas and thereby, can enable the wide adoption of flat, low-cost lenses for a variety of imaging applications.

Abstract:We have designed and realized an optically non-existing transformation-medium, based on a specific plasmonic metamaterial. Such a medium can perfectly transport impinging waves at any incident angle under both TE and TM polarizations without phase accumulations. Effective medium theory, mode expansion theory and full-wave simulations are in consistency with each other and facilitated the design of realized samples. We demonstrated experimentally that a curved microwave sample fabricated based on our design can work as a hyperlens, with experimental results in excellent agreement full-wave simulations.

Abstract:Luneburg lenses have superior performance compared with conventional lenses made of uniform materials with specially designed surfaces, but they are restricted by the difficulty of manufacturing the required gradient-index materials and their spherical focal surfaces. Recently, a new two-dimensional (2D) imaging lens was proposed and realized using transformation optics. Such a 2D lens overcomes the aberration problem, has a flattened focal surface and is valid for extremely large viewing angles. Here, we show the design, realization and measurement of a three-dimensional (3D) approximate transformation-optics lens in the microwave frequency band. The 3D lens is made of non-resonant metamaterials, which are fabricated with multilayered dielectric plates by drilling inhomogeneous holes. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate excellent performance of the 3D lens for different polarizations over a broad frequency band from 12.4 to 18 GHz. It can also be used as a high-gain antenna to radiate or receive narrow beams in large scanning angles.

Abstract:The microscope is one of the most important instruments in the nature science, which allows the researchers to “see” small things beyond naked eyes. However, since high spatial frequency information carried by evanescent waves decay exponentially during propagation in free space, the resolution of a conventional microscope is limited due to the diffraction of light which is called Abbe-Rayleigh limit. In the past decades, the concepts of superlens and hyperlens have been proposed to overcome the diffraction limit. Here, we demonstrate a cylindrical hyperlens works for TE polarized waves. The metamaterial forming this hyperlens is based on S-string resonators architecture, which shows two components of the constitutive parameters negative. We also demonstrate a dielectric hyperlens approach to overcome the diffraction limit at ultraviolet frequencies. The hyperlens is designed basing on layered grapheme and layered h-boron nitride, both of which show significant anisotropy and are ideal for hyperlens implementation. Further more, metamaterial without a hyperbolic dispersion relation can be utilized to realize subwavelength imaging as well. We propose a kind of broadband subwavelength imaging using non-resonant metamaterials. The metamaterial is fabricated by closed-rings structure which shows an elliptical dispersion relation with a broadband magnetic response. We also experimentally achieve a broadband deep subwavelength resolution with singular media. The meta-lens is made of subwavelength metal/air layers which exhibit singular medium property over a broad band. Our work shows subwavelength resolution can be achieved using metamaterials with different dispersion relations. It may provide a new perspective to design the lens and make subwavelength imaging into application.

Abstract:Metalens are planar lenses composed of the subwavelength arrays, which have unconventional and versatile functionalities to manipulate the light fields compared with the traditional lens. It is noted that the most metalens are designed in a monochromatic mode in the visible or mid-infrared range (mid-IR), however, the broadband range is needed in many practical applications, such as spectroscopy, sensing, and imaging. Here, we design and demonstrate a broadband achromatic dielectric metalens in the mid-IR range of 4 μm–5 μm for near diffraction-limited (1.0 λ ) focusing. The broadband achromatic propagation and focusing of the metalens are designed and simulated by constructing and optimizing the phase profile. The Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phases of all the elements contribute to the main phase increment of the whole phase profile of the metalens. The additional phase is constructed and optimized by using the random search algorithm to obtain the optimized size of all the elements. The focusing efficiency of the achromatic metalens is also optimized and averaged as the result of phase optimization within a wide band for the building elements, while it is lowered comparing with the regular metalens without broadband achromatic designing. Using this combined designing approach, various flat achromatic devices with the broadband metalens can find a new way for full-color detection and imaging.
