Abstract:In the last two decades, the majority of seaports around the world have experienced a remarkable increase in their container throughput. Consequently, improving the hinterland transport has become a priority. This is becoming even more important, as the quality of the access to and from the hinterland and the inland ports differs between seaports and affects their competitive position. Therefore many new concepts regarding hinterland transport operations are presented and operationalized. Several of these concepts aim at improving the port accessible by shifting flows away from the congested road network to the inland waterways or railways. One of these intermodal solutions is synchromodality. In this chapter, the challenges in using inland waterway transport (including inland ports) as an alternative modality and how synchromodality can help in overcoming those challenges are discussed. We also discuss a framework describing different elements of synchromodal freight transport. An overview of existing projects and practical cases on synchromodality, using inland waterways and inland ports is also presented.
