Abstract:Introduction Community Violence Initiatives (CVI), use a multi-disciplinary approach to disrupt the cycle of violence. These programs use credible messengers (trusted community individuals) to disrupt the cycle of violence and circumvent the barriers to systems of health care. Sharing Our Stories programs leveraged the lived experience of these individuals, we can provide guidance and leadership to create similar programs in other communities struggling to manage the violence that engulfs them and bridge the gap between the community in need and the health care systems that are there to support them. Methods Utilizing the lived experience of a Credible Messenger, we will discuss strategies agencies can use to leverage institutional knowledge to gain access to the community. However, we must recognize that we all have biases that can create barriers between the communities we look to serve and the agencies that are designed to serve them. Results By connecting experts in the field, e.g., Credible Messengers, we can create more opportunities for other community leaders with lived experience to become the change that is needed to decrease the barriers that continue to divide communities and perpetuate the cycle of trauma. Conclusion As health professionals, it is imperative for us to address the physical and mental health and wellness of our families and communities that we serve. However, to do this, we must gain their trust. The Sharing Our Stories programs can leverage trusted relationships to bridge the gap between our communities and our agencies that serve them.
