Abstract:Resilience has emerged as a crucial concept for evaluating structural performance under disasters because of its ability to extend beyond traditional risk assessments, accounting for a system's ability to minimize disruptions and maintain functionality during recovery. To facilitate the holistic understanding of resilience performance in structural systems, a system-reliability-based disaster resilience analysis framework was developed. The framework describes resilience using three criteria: reliability, redundancy, and recoverability, and the system's internal resilience is evaluated by inspecting the characteristics of reliability and redundancy for different possible progressive failure modes. However, the practical application of this framework has been limited to complex structures with numerous sub-components, as it becomes intractable to evaluate the performances for all possible initial disruption scenarios. To bridge the gap between the theory and practical use, especially for evaluating reliability and redundancy, this study centers on the idea that the computational burden can be substantially alleviated by focusing on initial disruption scenarios that are practically significant. To achieve this research goal, we propose three methods to efficiently eliminate insignificant scenarios: the sequential search method, the n-ball sampling method, and the surrogate model-based adaptive sampling algorithm. Three numerical examples, including buildings and a bridge, are introduced to prove the applicability and efficiency of the proposed approaches. The findings of this study are expected to offer practical solutions to the challenges of assessing resilience performance in complex structural systems.

Abstract:Improving the resilience of water distribution systems (WDSs) to handle natural disasters (e.g., earthquakes) is a critical step toward sustainable urban water management. This requires the water utility to be able to respond quickly to such disaster events, and in an organized manner, to prioritize the use of available resources to restore service rapidly while minimizing the negative impacts. Many methods have been developed to evaluate the WDS resilience, but few efforts are made so far to improve the resilience of a postdisaster WDS through identifying optimal sequencing of recovery actions. To address this gap, the authors propose a new dynamic optimization framework in this study in which the resilience of a postdisaster WDS is evaluated using six different metrics. A tailored genetic algorithm is developed to solve the complex optimization problem driven by these metrics. The proposed framework is demonstrated using a real-world WDS with 6,064 pipes. Results obtained show that the proposed framework successfully identifies near-optimal sequencing of recovery actions for this complex WDS. The gained insights, conditional on the specific attributes of the case study, include the following: (1) the near-optimal sequencing of a recovery strategy heavily depends on the damage properties of the WDS; (2) replacements of damaged elements tend to be scheduled at the intermediate-late stages of the recovery process due to their long operation time; and (3) interventions to damaged pipe elements near critical facilities (e.g., hospitals) should not be necessarily the first priority to recover due to complex hydraulic interactions within the WDS.

Abstract:Based on comparing with some existing variance reduced techniques for sampling, an improving importance sampling method for failure probability calculation, which combines the importance sampling technique with the conditional expectation variance reduced technique, is shown in this paper. This improving method can ensure the validation of every sampling simulation procedure, avoid the complicated optimization procedure, and improve the precision and efficiency of simulation estimation.

Abstract:Time-dependent reliability analysis of deteriorating structures is important in their performance evaluation and maintenance. Various definitions and methods have been used by researchers to predict the time-dependent reliability of structures. In the present study, these methods are first critically reviewed and examined. Among these methods, the stochastic-process-based method is theoretically the most rigorous but also computationally the most expensive. To facilitate the wide application of the stochastic-process-based method in complex problems, an efficient importance sampling method is then proposed in this paper. The proposed method includes a number of improvements formulated to enhance the efficiency and robustness of an existing method proposed by Kurtz and Song, leading to more efficient solutions of time-dependent reliability problems of structural systems with multiple important regions. The validity and efficiency of the new method is demonstrated through three numerical examples.

Abstract:Performance-based engineering for natural hazards facilitates the design and appraisal of structures with rigorous evaluation of their uncertain structural behavior under potentially extreme stochastic loads expressed in terms of failure probabilities against stated criteria. As a result, efficient stochastic simulation schemes are central to computational frameworks that aim to estimate failure probabilities associated with multiple limit states using limited sample sets. In this work, a generalized stratified sampling scheme is proposed in which two phases of sampling are involved: the first is devoted to the generation of strata-wise samples and the estimation of strata probabilities, whereas the second phase aims at the estimation of strata-wise failure probabilities. Phase-I sampling enables the selection of a generalized stratification variable (i.e., not necessarily belonging to the input set of random variables) for which the probability distribution is not known a priori. To improve the efficiency, Markov Chain Monte Carlo Phase-I sampling is proposed when Monte Carlo simulation is deemed infeasible, and optimal Phase-II sampling is implemented based on user-specified target coefficients of variation for the limit states of interest. The expressions for these coefficients are derived with due regard to the sample correlations induced by the Markov chains and the uncertainty in the estimated strata probabilities. The proposed stochastic simulation scheme reaps the benefits of near-optimal stratified sampling for a broader choice of stratification variables in high-dimensional reliability problems with a mechanism to approximately control the accuracy of the estimators of multiple failure probabilities. The practicality and efficiency of the scheme are demonstrated using two examples involving the estimation of failure probabilities associated with highly nonlinear responses induced by wind and seismic excitations.

Abstract:Extreme events and structural deterioration leads to failure accidents of bridge structures, thus caused immeasurable economic losses. Selecting ultimate bearing capacity of the bridge structure as the structure function indicators, two recovery functions were presented including a linear model based on empirical investigation and a fitted model based on mechanical analogy. Based on the above the disaster resilience index was established so as to measure the resilient capacity of bridge structure; Meanwhile, Bridge structure disaster resilience grading standards was recommended so as to provide new ideas and reference for bridge disaster prevention design.

Abstract:The life-cycle reliability of engineering structures was analyzed from a historic viewpoint.Review of historic failure accidents reveals that the structure reliability under ordinary loads and ordinary use purpose can be ensured by current design codes.However,there are still many things to be understood especially regarding structure reliability in construction/aging stages and even more things to be investigated regarding structure safety in some extraordinary conditions such as explosion,shock and fire.The state-of-the-art of these problems were reviewed,especially regarding reliability problems analyzed from the viewpoint of load-resistance distribution model,structure failure probability-(acceptable) target failure probability and sensitivity analysis-structure modification.Due to the difference of load-resistance distribution model and the target failure probability,the well-known load and resistance factor design(LRFD) method may not be an effective approach.
A Hybrid Algorithm Combining Kriging Model and Importance Sampling for Structural Reliability Analysis

Abstract:One primary goal of structural reliability analysis aims at computing the probability of failure of a component or system with respect to some prescribed performance functions. In modern engineering, most performance functions usually resort to running an expensive-to-evaluate computational model, which leads to the infeasibility of simulation involving 103~6 runs. Surrogate models, such as response surfaces approach or Kriging are introduced as a substitute for the original model to cope with the computational cost. However, the analysis based only on the surrogate model fails to quantify the error made by this substitution. In addition, the existing variance technique in simulation is still less efficient in terms of complex computational model. Therefore, a hybrid algorithm combing Kriging surrogate model and importance sampling for structural reliability analysis is proposed to calculate the failure probability. The applications in several reliability problems proves the approach efficient, robust and accurate. Abstract:Reliability analysis for structural systems with multiple failure modes and expensive-to-evaluate simulations is challenging. In this paper, a new and efficient system reliability method is proposed based on the adaptive importance sampling and kriging models. The Metropolis–Hastings (M–H) algorithm is used to construct several Markov chains to fully explore complex failure regions. A number of Markov chain states are selected as the center of the component importance sampling functions to generate samples for reliability analysis. Based on the component importance sampling function of each selected chain state, the system importance sampling function is constructed with the weighting index. The system importance sampling function can be constructed effectively because it does not involve time-consuming simulations and the most probable point (MPP) search. The new learning function, which is directly linked to the system failure probability, is developed to adaptively select the best added samples for refining the kriging models at each iteration. The adaptive importance sampling method and kriging models are well-combined for system reliability analysis in the proposed method. Compared with existing methods, the proposed method, generally, offers the following advantages: (1) The learning function and stopping criterion are directly linked to system failure probability; (2)the adaptive importance sampling and kriging models are well-combined to yield accurate results based on a small sample size for small failure probability problems; (3) the weights of sampling centers are considered, and the MPP search is not required at each iteration; (4) it is applicable for complex systems regardless of the structure and system failure probability level. Three numerical examples are analyzed, which demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for complex system reliability analysis.

Abstract:The possibility of importance sampling technique applied to dynamical structural reliability problems is explored, and then the procedures of calculating dynamical structural reliability under white noise excitation with importance sampling technique is presented. The white noise is modeled as independent normal random variable series. The scheme of amplifying the intensity of white noise, i.e., the variance of the normal random variables, is adopted to increase the chances of response samples falling in the failure domain. The joint probability density function of the normal random series with amplified variance is chosen as the importance sampling function. The influence of different amplifying ratios of variance on calculation precision is compared through a numerical example. It is indicated from the calculation that there exists an optimal value of amplifying ratios of variance that makes the calculation most efficient. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that the important sampling method presented herein is suitable to be applied to the calculation of dynamical failure probability of structures.

Abstract:Importance sampling is a method to predict structural or mechanical reliability.The core of the method is to determine a sampling center point of importance sampling density function.At present,for most of the methods,iterative programs are adopted to compute a sampling center point,which make the importance sampling method limit on some simple limitation equation cases,thus limiting the application scope of importance sampling method.Adaptive importance sampling based on particle swarm method(AISP) can get the most probable failure point by solving the corresponding limitation state equation,consequently getting a sampling center point of importance sampling method.The method is not restricted to the form of the limitation state equation,explicit or implicit.Therefore,the proposed method enlarges the application scope of the importance sampling method.The numerical results indicate that the proposed method not only has a preferable prediction accuracy but also has a better efficiency than a direct sampling method.

Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure

Abstract:Resilient bridge infrastructure is a fundamental component of an uninterrupted transportation system. Thus, assessing the resilience of bridge infrastructure against natural hazards is crucial for transportation agencies. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to develop an integrated framework for analyzing the bridge infrastructure resilience against seismic hazards. The Dempster-Shafer method has been incorporated with the Best Worst Method to achieve this objective and accommodate uncertainty. At first, various resilience criteria have been identified based on an extensive literature review. The weights of the resilience criteria have been determined using the Best Worth Method based on the response provided by the experts. After that, the Dempster-Shafer rule of combination has been used to assess the seismic resilience of a highway bridge by proposing a Bridge Resilience Index. This proposed resilience framework can support transportation agencies in taking effective strategies against seismic hazards.

Abstract:Structural reliability analysis requires an accurate and efficient evaluation for failure probability. A new scheme is proposed to identify the optimal importance sampling center, based on weighing samples by their probability density functions (PDF). By incorporating the scheme into the adaptive importance sampling method ISAG (adaptive Importance Sampling based on Active Guiding technology), an improved adaptive importance sampling method is proposed. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated and verified by two numerical experiments.

Abstract:Abstract Civil infrastructure systems become highly complex and thus get more vulnerable to disasters. The concept of disaster resilience, the overall capability of a system to manage risks posed by catastrophic events, is emerging to address the challenge. Recently, a system-reliability-based disaster resilience analysis framework was proposed for a holistic assessment of the components' reliability, the system's redundancy, and the society's ability to recover the system functionality. The proposed framework was applied to individual structures to produce diagrams visualizing the pairs of the reliability index (β) and the redundancy index (p) defined to quantify the likelihood of each initial disruption scenario and the corresponding system-level failure probability, respectively. This paper develops methods to apply the β-p analysis framework to infrastructure networks and demonstrates its capability to evaluate the disaster resilience of networks from a system reliability viewpoint. We also propose a new causality-based importance measure of network components based on the β-p analysis and a causal diagram model that can consider the causality mechanism of the system failure. Compared with importance measures in the literature, the proposed measure can evaluate a component's relative importance through a well-balanced consideration of network topology and reliability. The proposed measure is expected to provide helpful guidelines for making optimal decisions to secure the disaster resilience of infrastructure networks.

Abstract:Fragility plays a pivotal role in performance‐based earthquake engineering, which represents the seismic performance of structural systems. To comprehensively understand the structural performance under seismic events, it is necessary to consider uncertainties in the structural model, i.e., epistemic uncertainties. However, considering such uncertainties is challenging due to computational complexity, leading most fragility analyses only to consider the chaotic behavior of ground motions on structural responses, i.e., aleatoric uncertainties. To address this challenge, this study proposes an adaptive algorithm that intertwines with the conventional fragility analysis procedures to consider both aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties. The algorithm introduces Gaussian process‐based metamodels to efficiently consider epistemic uncertainties with a small number of time history analyses. Steel moment‐resisting frame structures and a reinforced concrete building are used to demonstrate the improved efficiency and wide applicability of the proposed method. In each case, the proposed method yields fragility curves consistent with reference solutions but with substantially lower computational effort. Comprehensive discussions are provided regarding ground motion sets, structural types, and definitions of limit‐states to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Sequential directional importance sampling (SDIS) is an efficient adaptive simulation method for estimating failure probabilities. It expresses the failure probability as the product of a group of integrals that are easy to estimate, wherein the first one is estimated with Monte Carlo simulation (MCS), and all the subsequent ones are estimated with directional importance sampling. In this work, we propose an enhanced SDIS method for structural reliability analysis. We discuss the efficiency of MCS for estimat?ing the first integral in standard SDIS and propose using Subset Simulation as an alternative method. Additionally, we propose a Kriging-based active learning algorithm tailored to identify multiple roots in certain important di?rections within a specificed search interval. The performance of the enhanced SDIS is demonstrated through various complex benchmark problems. The results show that the enhanced SDIS is a versatile reliability analysis method that can efficiently and robustly solve challenging reliability problems

Abstract:In this study, the useful application of an instrumented structural health monitoring (SHM) system is proposed for the reliable seismic performance evaluation based on measured response data. A seismic fragility is chosen as a key index for probabilistic seismic performance assessment on an infrastructure. The seismic performance evaluation procedure consists of the following five main steps; (1) measuring ambient vibration of a bridge under general traveling vehicles; (2) identifying modal parameters including natural frequencies and mode shapes from the measured acceleration data by output-only modal identification method; (3) updating linear structural parameters in a preliminary finite element (FE) model using the identified modal parameters; (4) analyzing nonlinear response time histories of the structure using nonlinear seismic analysis program; and finally (5) evaluating the probabilistic seismic performance in terms of seismic fragility. In the present study, the seismic fragility curves are represented by a log-normal distribution function. An instrumented highway bridge is utilized to demonstrate the proposed evaluation procedure and it is found that the seismic fragility of a highway bridge can be reliably evaluated by combining the modal information obtained from the instrumented SHM system and FE model updating by using the information.

Abstract:The well-known sequential Monte Carlo simulation is a powerful tool to analyse short-term reliability of complicated composite power system. However, the corresponding computational burden is tremendous when applied to a highly reliable system. Aiming at improving the simulation efficiency, an adaptive importance sampling technology is proposed in this study. The proposed method, on the basis of component state duration sampling technique combined with cross-entropy method, is able to provide reliability evaluation of highly reliable non-homogeneous Markov system. The Weibull and lognormal distributions are considered to describe repair time of individual components comprising a system. Through the case studies conducted on a reinforced Roy Billinton reliability test system, it is validated that the proposed method is effective and of high efficiency and the efficiency gain against the crude sequential Monte Carlo simulation is robust to variation of load level and lead timescale. The proposed method is useful and efficient to timely monitor the system operating pressure under different lead timescales.

Abstract:The zero-variance technique is used to analyze a highly efficient importance sampling method developed by S. K. Au and J. L. Beck to calculate the failure probability of systems with linear failure surfaces. Base on the analysis, an importance sampling method is developed to solve the reliability problems of structural systems with nonlinear failure surface. The presented method is applied three examples. The numerical results with the importance sampling method using 20 samples are very similar to those with the plain sampling method using 10 5 ∼ 10 6 samples, which shows the high efficiency of the presented method.
