This article sets out to provide applied information and perspectives to foster the development of interprofessional sexual medicine services in Obstetrics and Gynecology practices in hospital and community settings.

Teaching and learning about human sexuality in undergraduate medical education

Abstract:Background: Effective management of the doctor's role in relation to human sexuality requires sensitivity and tact, an ability to put patients at ease, use of appropriate language, and therapeutic, non-discriminatory attitudes. However, previous research suggests that medical students and doctors may hold negative attitudes towards homosexuality and some forms of sexual behaviour. Some educational programmes have started to help students develop communication skills for sexual health consultations, but little work has addressed the broader issue of attitudes and values which may underlie behaviour. It is vital that medical students begin early the process of reflection and recognition of how their attitudes and values might influence their care of patients. In this paper we report on a course designed to initiate this process at Leicester-Warwick Medical School (LWMS). Course description: The course utilizes techniques of desensitization, problem-solving and reflection to enable the students to achieve the learning outcomes, which are primarily oriented towards reflection and self-development. It uses a variety of teaching and learning strategies, combining peer learning with self-directed learning, and small-group learning with whole class learning. Course evaluation: We report observations and a before-and-after questionnaire study of students' views and attitudes. This evaluation suggests that the course is successful in reducing students' anxieties about human sexuality and improving their confidence in developing appropriate skills. Conclusions: The LWMS course is one model which might be used to begin the process of encouraging medical students to develop ways of appropriately managing their responsibilities in relation to human sexuality.
Sexual and reproductive health teaching in undergraduate medical education: A narrative review

Abstract:Objective: Contraception use, undesired pregnancy, and abortion care are common medical experiences that most physicians will encounter for their patients. Future physicians should therefore have some formal education on these topics. In this narrative review, we focused on how medical education approaches these sometimes polarizing yet fundamental topics. Methods: We assessed the published literature on sexual and reproductive health education in undergraduate medical education from 2000 to 2021, screening 868 articles and including 52 articles. We included articles that discussed contraception, emergency contraception, pregnancy options counseling, abortion, and ethics related to sexual and reproductive health. Results: Included studies came from 14 countries and described both preclinical and clinical education. Studies assessed medical student knowledge, the effectiveness of educational interventions and medical school faculty perspectives on sexual and reproductive health curricula. Medical educators have employed a variety of approaches to teach sexual and reproductive health including simulation, objective structured clinical examinations, team-based learning, narrative medicine, online modules, and flipped classrooms. Conclusion: Students generally received sexual and reproductive health education favorably, demonstrating increased knowledge and comfort with these topics after an education session. Studies also identified curricular gaps and deficiencies in student knowledge, which may indicate a need for improved and consistent medical school education on contraception and abortion.

Abstract:Sexual health education has significant implications on the physical and mental well-being of adolescents, yet several barriers impede the delivery of a quality curriculum. This article explores the challenges and importance of comprehensive sexual education. Through the experiences of adolescents like “Maya” (pseudonym), we discuss the need for safe spaces, inclusive curricula, and supportive networks to address gaps in sexual health education. The article also examines the current landscape of sexual education across the United States, emphasizing the role of advocacy and community-driven initiatives in promoting standardized, inclusive, and comprehensive programs. It concludes with actionable steps individuals can take at the local, national, and legislative level to support and advance comprehensive sexual health education.

Abstract:Introduction In 2009, The International Consultation in Sexual Medicine called for the implementation of a greatly expanded, national standard on sexual health education across the nation within medical schools (E Coleman et al. 2013). Yet, over half of medical students throughout the United States and Canada feel that their medical school education left them inadequately prepared to address their patients' sexual health concerns (Shindel AW et al. 2010). A 2022 study illustrates that outside of basic female anatomy, over half of the Chicago area medical schools failed to address female sexual functioning in their curriculum (N Codispoti et al 2022). Furthermore, today's physicians share similar qualms, as they cite lack of education and training on sexual health as leading to barriers to care and a decrease in screening for sexual dysfunction (Parish SJ et al 2009). Our study delineates a proposed curriculum, analyzing for efficacy as well as the students perceived comfort with addressing this topic in clinic and their perspectives on its importance to their education. Objective Assess the need for curriculum supplementation based on student baseline knowledge and comfort with the topic of women's sexual health. Establish the supplemental curriculum, analyzing for efficacy of education and improved student comfort with addressed topics. Integration of supplemental curriculum into study location medical school curriculum and standardization to all area medical school curriculums. Methods This self controlled, cross-sectional, survey study investigates first year medical students' initial education level and perspectives on womens' sexual function (WSF) and womens' sexual dysfunction (WSD), and their post education knowledge level and perspective. The study team recruited 50 students for our study, approximately one third of the class. The study outcomes were assessed for the efficacy of each of the teaching materials through content based quiz questions, as well as the students perceived comfort with addressing this topic in clinic and their perspectives on its importance to their education as compared to the pre-education survey. Results The study resulted in statistically significant improvement from the pretest knowledge in subjects of postmenopausal atrophic vaginitis, perimenopausal risk factors and preventative care, and female HPG axis-based pubertal development. Notably within the demographic assessment, all medical specialties were selected as "of interest" by at least one participant. The participants also assessed that overall women's sexual health should be taught in their preclinical curriculum and is valuable to their future career, despite the widely varied fields of medicine within interest. Conclusions With statistically significant improvement in knowledge of women's sexual development and function through our proposed curriculum, we aim to advocate for implementation of a standardized preclinical women's sexual health curriculum. Furthermore, our ongoing studies focus on the development of a curriculum directed at the pathology and treatments of female sexual dysfunction from a biopsychosocial perspective, resulting in a comprehensive curriculum. Abstract:Introduction In the United States, nearly half of all women will report having at least one type of female sexual dysfunction at any given point in their lives. Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD) is defined as a disturbance in sexual desire, psychophysiological changes that characterize the sexual response cycle, and marked sexual distress and interpersonal difficulty. Most women feel their healthcare provider should discuss their sexual concerns, yet few report being asked or screened about their sexual health. Women may seek care to address their sexual health concerns because sexual concerns can affect their quality of life. Objective The specific aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an online educational intervention about female sexual dysfunction on the knowledge and self-efficacy of healthcare providers. Methods The project is a single-arm effectiveness study that used a pre-test/post-test design, aiming to improve self-efficacy of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and certified nurse-midwives who provide gynecological care. Participants were recruited via convenience and snowball sampling. The participants provided demographic and pre-test data before viewing the educational intervention and completed the post-test immediately following. Results Forty-three participants completed responses to the entire questionnaire, including pre and post-test. The majority of participants identified as female (91%), Caucasian (51%), nurse practitioners (81%) providing gynecological care for 6-15 years (53%) and live in the South (58%). Following the intervention, participants demonstrated a significant increase in confidence in their ability to communicate about sex with older adults (p < 0.001, d 0.51) and with those who have differing sexuality from their own (p <0.00, d 0.53). There was an increase in confidence in the knowledge to care for patients with religious/spiritual convictions about sexuality (p < 0.006, d 0.40) and sexual problems related to a medical, pharmacological, or surgical treatment (p < 0.009, d 0.38). Participants reported fewer learning needs following the educational module with a moderate to large effect size across different competencies. Conclusions Educating health care providers using an online educational module may lead to more confidence in the healthcare providers' communication with, knowledge of, and attitudes related to female sexual concerns. Healthcare providers can provide the necessary support and care for the women they serve by educating themselves to properly obtain sexual health history screening, physical exams, diagnoses, and treatment options. Online educational modules have enhanced healthcare providers' knowledge on various topics. The results of this study can be useful in creating education for healthcare providers in caring for FSD. Further studies are needed to determine the long-term effect of online education modules on the screening of female sexual dysfunction, attitudes and behaviors, effect on the self-efficacy of healthcare providers. Abstract:Introduction Sexual dysfunctions remain inadequately addressed in medical education, despite their prevalence and adverse impact on quality of life. In Brazil, there are scarce university-affiliated healthcare centers that focus on sexual health. These services play a critical role in diagnosing and managing sexual disorders and can be pivotal in the training of healthcare professionals, as well as in the advancement of research and outreach in sexual medicine. Objective To describe the experience of establishing two sexual health centers in university-affiliated hospitals in Northeastern Brazil. Method This is an experiential report detailing the establishment of two distinct sexual health services. Results Both sexual health services started in different general hospitals in 2021, founded by a male and a female psychiatrists, authors of this paper. The initiative was prompted by the lack of dedicated sexual health services and the awareness of substantial patient distress stemming from sexual issues. Activities include patient consultations, case discussions, sexology seminars, and research project development, involving medical students and resident physicians, integrated into the psychiatry residency curriculum Referrals come mainly from other hospital specialties, but external referrals are also accepted. Collaboration with other healthcare professionals occurs through the analysis of clinical cases. Conclusion The establishment of sexual health services within university-affiliated hospitals has a positive impact on patient care and contributes to the study of sexual medicine, an area often overlooked in medical education. Improvements are needed in patient recruitment, counter-referral procedures, and the systematic incorporation of medical student rotations. While these services hold promise, they require greater integration with other healthcare services and a closer collaboration with undergraduate medical education. Financing No conflict.

Incorporating LGBT Health in an Undergraduate Medical Education Curriculum Through the Construct of Social Determinants of Health

Abstract:Introduction: The AAMC has provided a resource to medical schools for implementing curricular change in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) health education. However, studies have identified that many health professionals who do not feel comfortable in their ability to provide quality care for LGBT patients do not perform complete sexual histories routinely and/or harbor bias towards these patients or their sexual practices. This situation underscores the continued need for further education on this topic. Methods: Based on a needs assessment survey of medical students and faculty, we developed a 1-hour didactic lecture to provide instruction on how social determinants of health impact the care of LGBT patients. Students were not required to have any prerequisite knowledge for the session. A content expert in LGBT health taught the lecture using Microsoft PowerPoint in a traditional medical school lecture hall. Results: The lecture was given to 180 third-year medical students. A total of 63 students (35%) responded to the retrospective pre- and postlecture survey. After the didactic lecture, students reported a statistically significant change in their knowledge of the lecture objectives. Discussion: The didactic lecture was able to increase students' knowledge of how social determinants impact the health of LGBT patients. The lecture can be incorporated into a longitudinal curriculum on LGBT health. Additional work and research are needed on increasing comfort in faculty teaching.

Abstract:Introduction Sexual health is an imperative area of study in medical school education. However, many medical schools do not offer a comprehensive curriculum nor is it standardized across the US. The history of sexual health as an academic area was introduced in the 1970s but minimal work has been done to assess the validity and accuracy of teachings. While previous work has evaluated the full, mandatory, sexual health course in year 1 medicine at a large state university, the relationship between curricula across different institutions has not been considered (Ross, Bayer, 2021). Objective The sexual medicine curriculum across U.S. medical schools has not been well documented or standardized. This study aims to assess the current guidelines and recommendations for sexual health curriculums in medical schools across the northeast region and compare the current teachings to suggested standards. Methods A compilation of academic resources including lecture material and syllabus will be systematically reviewed utilizing a standardized and validated rubric. The variables assessed include: biological and psychological aspects of human sexual development, anatomy and physiology of the human sexual response cycle, sexual health in relation to human reproduction, and contraceptive options. Results Statistical analyses will include a chi-squared to determine whether rubric ratings differ by region, type of school and degree awarded as well as a four-way ANOVA to explore whether geographic region, school control, degree awarded, and research activity levels influence the quantity and quality of sexual health curricula. Conclusions The goal of this study is to determine the areas of discrepancies between guidelines of sexual health curricula and the current teachings with the aim to improve sexual medicine education in U.S. medical schools. Aim This study aims to assess written curriculum materials from sexual health curricula in medical schools across the northeast region of the US and compare the current teachings to suggested standards. Methods A compilation of academic resources including lecture materials and syllabi were systematically reviewed utilizing a standardized and validated rubric with variables assessed including: biological and psychological aspects of human sexual development, anatomy and physiology of the human sexual response cycle, sexual health in relation to human reproduction, and contraceptive options. We analyzed our data from the document analysis to look at the frequency of inclusion and exclusion of the sexual health topics included in our rubric. Outcomes The outcomes of our data set were in line with our hypothesis that there is significant variance between sexual health curricula across institutions as well as an overall lack in material covering sexual health topics. Results The data show significant sex specific differences such that male-specific topics were covered more frequently than female-specific information. Additionally, only one of the 10 schools examined taught about vulvar conditions. There was also a paucity of information about sexuality in the post-partum period. Clinical Implications The clinical implications of this study aim to highlight the discrepancy between an ideal sexual health curriculum and what is actually being taught in medical schools and help to guide future work of creating a comprehensive and standardized sexual medicine education in US. medical schools. Strengths and Limitations The validity of this study was strengthened by analyzing direct curricula materials as opposed to previous use of subjective, self-reported questionnaires. However, the sample location being restricted to the Northeast was a limitation to generalize findings across the country. Future studies would aim to analyze medical school curricula across different regions in the US. Conclusion This study shows that there is a lack of comprehensive and standardized sexual health curriculum in medical schools in the Northeastern US and serves as initial evidence for further investigation of this topic across American medical schools.

Abstract:Introduction Sexual concerns are prevalent, but studies have demonstrated that patients often feel most comfortable if the clinician initiates the conversation. Many patients are hesitant to discuss sexual concerns with their providers for a variety of reasons including fear of judgment, lack of clinician knowledge, and concerns that these issues are abnormal or unusual. Clinician education plays an important role in helping to facilitate these difficult conversations. However, there has never been a broad assessment of education across medical training programs, while the most recent assessment of MD training programs occurred approximately a decade ago. Objective We set out to create and administer a survey to assess sexual medicine training across most major medical disciplines where sexual health matters may be discussed, including nurse practitioner, midwifery, physician, and physician assistant training. Methods A subcommittee of the ISSWSH Advocacy Committee was formed with members representing the medical disciplines to be surveyed. A survey was developed to gather data on sexual medicine education offered at nursing, midwifery, physician, and physician assistant training programs. The survey included a series of questions regarding content taught during these programs (checklists, open ended responses). The survey was approved by the Wake Forest IRB and distributed using RedCap to various institutions from the above disciplines throughout the United States. Results We received a total of 33 complete responses. 88.5% of respondents stated they used traditional lecture as their teaching method, whilst only 11.5% used simulation, and 7.7% used actual mechanical models. The majority of programs that responded spent 3-5 hours total dedicated to human sexuality and sexual function education. Interestingly, respondents noted that faculty involved in sexual medicine education were mostly OB/GYN in background (63%), followed by family medicine (18.5%) and urology (18.5%). While not all respondents indicated that their students were assessed on their knowledge after teaching, it was noted that the majority of programs that did respond indicated that examination was the most common mode of assessment. Only 33% of institutions noted having a regional or nationally recognized expert in the field. Conclusion It is essential that the accrediting bodies for medical programs incorporate the input of international societies such as ISSWSH (in collaboration with other sexual medicine organizations) to formulate an official statement and recommendations for a standardized curriculum for sexual medicine.

(075) The Use Of Online Educational Modules To Reduce Female Sexual Dysfunction

Abstract:Introduction Sex is fundamental to overall health, well-being, and quality of life yet, the prevalence of female sexual dysfunction is alarmingly high. This could be attributed to multiple factors such as an overall dearth of evidence-based information detailing female anatomy, arousal, orgasm, and sexual disorders. In addition, many women face numerous obstacles that limit their access to a comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education. The unavailability and inaccessibility of knowledge regarding the female sexual experience can prevent many women from truly appreciating and understanding their bodies. This can lead to a variety of negative outcomes, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and decreased well-being. Objective Several of these outcomes are most prevalent in young women; thus, it is critical that we educate this age group using delivery methods best suited for a young demographic. Methods In this study, we created a brief online educational module for women between the ages of 18 and 29 years old, which explained various aspects of the female sexual experience including female anatomy, orgasm responses, and masturbation. The module also shared resources women may use if they are experiencing issues regarding sex or pleasure. We expected to see greater female sexual literacy among women who completed the module (intervention) compared to those who did not (control). 13 women between the ages of 18 and 29 years old who were attending their annual gynecologic well-visit were recruited and randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. Results Although all participants from both groups rated sex education as important (N=13), less than half (N=5) reported having received formal sex education including female sexual functioning. Furthermore, only half (N=6) correctly disagreed when asked if the outer part of the female reproductive system was called "vagina." However, post-test surveys showed no significant difference in knowledge between those who watched the module and those who did not. We attribute this to the sample size being too small, to the age range being too wide, and to the information presented in the module being too basic for this age group. Conclusions It is imperative that we not only continue to explore the female sexual experience, but that we also continue to improve ways to deliver that information. Further research on the use of online modules for sex education should consider its population's degree of knowledge, limit their sample's age range, and focus on issues its population commonly inquires about. Female sexual medicine: an assessment of medical school curricula in a major United States city

Abstract:Background: Although approximately 41% of women experience sexual dysfunction, limited education on female sexual medicine (FSM) in medical school results in underpreparedness among physicians when addressing these bothersome conditions. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the extent to which FSM is represented in medical education by examining current preclinical and clinical curricula. Methods: Preclinical curriculum materials on female sexual anatomy, physiology, and pathology, as well as obstetrics and gynecology clinical materials (syllabi, lecture materials, and supplemental resources), were collected from medical schools in the Chicago area. We utilized previous literature to identify specific components of medical school content to evaluate. Outcomes: Upon reviewing each institution's curricula, we evaluated materials for topic saturation and assessed goals of each syllabus in terms of required content. Results: Curriculum materials were collected from 7 medical schools. In the preclinical assessment, 1 institution identified all anatomic components of the clitoris in our review, 4 discussed the physiology of the female orgasm, 3 highlighted the prevalence and epidemiology of female sexual dysfunction (FSD), 3 addressed treatments for FSD, and 1 instructed a genitourinary physical exam specific to assessing FSD. When assessing obstetrics and gynecology clinical materials, 5 institutions included topics related to FSM. Of these, only 1 institution had corresponding required synchronous clerkship time dedicated to these topics as a 1-hour lecture, in addition to an optional online training to third-year clinical students in comprehensive sexual history-taking practices, including screening for FSD. One other institution offered supplemental case-based gynecology modules including vulvovaginal diseases and chronic pelvic pain, though sexual pleasure, arousal, and libido were not included. Clinical implications: The results of this study highlight the need for the inclusion of standardized curricula related to FSM in medical education to equip future physicians to treat patients with sexual dysfunction. Strengths and limitations: The strengths of this study include that it is the first of its kind to complete a comprehensive review of FSM curricula at a cohort of undergraduate medical institutions. Its limitations include a small sample size of 7 medical schools limited to 1 geographical area. Conclusion: Our focused needs assessment of medical schools in the Chicago area reveals inconsistencies in outlined institution-specific course goals related to FSM and thus highlights the need for restructuring the curricula to prepare future physicians to recognize and treat patients with sexual dysfunction.
Classroom Voices: Youth Perspectives to Direct School-based Sexual Health Education

Abstract:Sexual health education is a well-known, evidence-based intervention that can improve adolescent health outcomes, increase protective health behaviours, and decrease risky health behaviours. Providing sexual health education in school settings offers opportunities for discussion of critical health topics and can improve the school environment for all students. However, not all sexual health education is taught equitably across classroom environments. As part of a mixed-methods study to describe school-based sexual health education, we conducted focus groups and interviews with recently graduated high school students in New Mexico, a geographically and ethnically diverse state in the US Southwest. Thirty-one young people shared their experiences, explored the sexual health education content they had been taught, and offered recommendations to improve sexual health education. Three key themes were developed: young people wanted and needed sexual health education taught in school settings; the sexual health education currently taught in school is not helpful and sometimes harmful; and the individuals who teach sexual health education are critically important. These findings can inform and support school staff and administrators addressing barriers to school-based sexual health education delivery, particularly in schools within marginalised communities with limited resources. The results support including youth as stakeholders in the planning, delivery and evaluation of school-based sexual health education; and the development of sexual health education training for teachers, with the goal of improving health outcomes for all youth populations.

Abstract:Sexual health is an integral aspect of overall health and well-being and is fundamental to the sustainable development of societies worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines sexual health as 'a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being in relation to sexuality'. However, addressing sexual health has been afforded low priority in primary healthcare systems. Primary care practitioners (PCPs), who play a crucial role in providing comprehensive care to communities, receive little training on screening and managing individuals with sexual health problems. The scope of services ranges from education, prevention and screening, to management of sexual health matters. Patients with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as stroke, cancer, heart disease and diabetes, are at increased risk for sexual dysfunction, possibly because of common pathogenetic mechanisms, such as inflammation. This is of considerable importance in the sub-Saharan African context where there is a rapidly increasing prevalence of NCDs, as well as a high burden of HIV. Strategies to improve the quality of sexual health services in primary care include creating a safe and non-judgemental practice environment for history-taking among gender-diverse populations, utilising effective screening tools aligned with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria for sexual dysfunctions. In particular, the International Consultation on Sexual Medicine (ICSM -5) diagnostic and treatment algorithm can empower primary care providers to effectively address sexual dysfunctions among patients and improve the quality of care provided to communities regarding sexual and reproductive health.
Creation of a Medical Student Training to Improve Comfort Providing Trauma-Informed Care to Sexual Assault Survivors

Abstract:Introduction: Sexual violence is a significant public health concern in the United States, affecting as many as one in two women and one in four men. However, few medical schools offer education on trauma-informed communication with patients who disclose sexual assault (SA). The goal of this training was to provide medical students with an understanding of how to empathically respond to SA disclosures, collect pertinent medical information while avoiding retraumatization, and empower patients to feel in control of their care. Methods: One hundred forty-nine second-year medical students at Rush Medical College attended a 1-hour didactic lecture discussing the needs of SA survivors followed by small-group sessions during which they practiced trauma-informed communication skills. Students completed anonymous pre- and postsession surveys featuring nine Likert-scale questions that assessed comfort level providing trauma-informed care. Results: Of the 149 attendees, 88 (59%) completed matched pre- and posttraining surveys that demonstrated significant improvement in all assessed metrics of trauma-informed care, including comfort collecting information, empowering survivors, and responding to and normalizing patients' concerns. Two weeks after completing the training, all 149 students also correctly answered a free-response question testing retention of key training takeaways on their Sexuality and Reproduction final exam. Discussion: The training significantly improved medical student comfort in providing trauma-informed care across all collected metrics. The training can be feasibly reproduced at other institutions so that future physicians across specialties can provide trauma-informed care, ideally improving the acute and chronic health outcomes that disproportionately affect SA survivors.

Abstract:Introduction/objectives Sexual dysfunction, present in 43% of women and 31% of men, is the result of several pathological conditions and must be properly investigated and treated. About 50 to 72% of physicians experience difficulty and do not regularly investigate their patients' sexual health. The study investigates the teaching and approach to sexual health in the medical graduation at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the State University of Campinas, in order to detect gaps that justify the difficulty in discussing this aspect. Materials and Methods Descriptive and transversal study is in progress, including medical students that are above 18 years old and are in the fifth or sixth year of their graduation. Anonymously and after reading the Informed Consent Form, the online questionnaire, composed of questions related to the theoretical and practical approaches in sexuality and the knowledge that they have been receiving in medical school, can be answered. Results The online questionnaire was answered by 64 students in the fifth and sixth year of graduation (1.6% and 98.4%, respectively). 43.5% denied being effectively prepared and confident, 35.5% are uncertain and only 21% feel prepared to discuss the subject with their patients. The main theme approached involves mostly the female sexuality, being the reproductive focus (85.2%), abortion (85.2%) and sexual violence (83.6%) the most discussed subjects. Only 4 students indicate that they understand male dysfunctions. A minority of participants (21.9%) felt safe to address sexual issues with their patients. Conclusions Most of the students do not feel comfortable or confident and lack specific knowledge and skills to deal with questions related to sexuality. More time should be dedicated to education, theoretical and practical classes, concerning human sexuality and its cultural, societal, and health aspects in the graduation during medical school. Abstract:Introduction Sexual and reproductive history taking is a fundamental yet often overlooked aspect of medical education. Most medical schools in North America do not provide adequate sexual health training to students, with 44% of schools lacking a sexual and reproductive health curriculum (1). Moreover, there are currently no national standards across medical schools for training students to take a sexual health history (2). Existing programs vary widely and often consist of limited hours or electives, leaving many medical graduates feeling unprepared (3). Objective To develop a multimodal course and standardized curriculum for first-year medical students. Methods Through a combination of video presentations, live demonstration, interactive lecture, and Group Observed Structured Clinical Experience (GOSCE) sessions with standardized patients, students were guided in learning and practicing sexual history taking skills. Post-course surveys were sent to all 52 students after completion of the course, with 46 students completing the survey (response rate 88%). Students were asked to rank their knowledge of the course topic on a scale from 1 (not at all knowledgeable) to 5 (extremely knowledgeable) both before and after participating. Results On average, there was a significant change in knowledge, regarding navigating sexual health biases and effectively obtaining a sexual history from patients, by 1.2 points after students partook in the course (p < 0.0001). The majority (80%) reported that there was the right amount of lecture and patient interactive learning. Ninety-six percent of students agreed that the course met the learning objectives and indicated they would use what they learned in the course in the future. Conclusions After participating in this multimodal sexual health course, students demonstrated an improvement in knowledge and indicated that the course met the learning objectives. Abstract:Background: Research has shown the role of identity on future health professionals' confidence and competence in addressing the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs of their patients. While there has been some work in increasing the sexual health literacy of future providers via various curricular approaches and comprehensive clinical-based training, there are research gaps on how social differences around identity impact future healthcare professionals' knowledge and practices around SRH. Objectives: This article presents research findings on the experiences of US undergraduate students attending a campus that provides training in the health sciences and health professions. Our study aims to understand the perspectives of these students as they pertain to their future career choices in healthcare, with a focus on how their past experiences learning about sex, sexuality, and reproduction impact their current and future professional trajectories. Methods: We present a qualitative analysis from 40 in-depth interviews with U.S. undergraduates. The interview questions were designed in collaboration with undergraduate researchers interested in sexual health education. These student researchers collected all the interview data and worked with senior researchers to analyze some of these data. Results: The themes that emerged from the interviews were around experiences with what students perceived as "fractured" sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge they received as children and adolescents. This knowledge shaped essential aspects of their identity as young adults and future healers. Data indicated unique processes implicated in how past as well as present socialization experiences learning about sex, sexuality, and reproduction positions undergraduates in health professions to see young adulthood as a journey of "catching up" on sexual knowledge but also as an ongoing experience of anticipation and planning influencing their career-building journey. Conclusions: The importance of sexual health literacy among healthcare professionals cannot be overstated, as it is vital in providing patient-centered and non-judgmental sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care and services. To date, there is a shortage of studies looking at the impact of sexual health knowledge on healthcare professionals. More research is needed on educational strategies that could be implemented at the intra-personal level to assist college-aged young adults in healthcare career tracks to "catch up" or "fill in the gaps" in their sexual education journey.
