Abstract:Silicon based anode materials have gained great deal of attention in Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and have been implemented in multiple commercialized batteries in recent years. This paper presents synthesis of high-performance binder free anode electrode from Carbon coated Silicon nanowires in a yolk shell structure, with superior specific capacity, cycle life, rate capability and coulombic efficiency. The Silicon nanowires have been grown on stainless-steel current collector via LPCVD process. A consequent silica sacrificial layer has been conformally coated on the nanowires, followed by a DC-PECVD Carbon nano layer deposition. The removal of the silica layer resulted in the formation of yolk shell nanowires which have been implemented in a half cell configuration LIB coin cell, to investigate the electrochemical performance. At current rate of 0.2 C, an initial specific capacity of 2882 mAh/g has been achieved in the first cycle, which reaches 1681 mAh/g at the end of 543 cycle. The fabricated anode electrode is the first report on Silicon @ Void @ Carbon nanowires grown on conductive substrate as a LIB anode electrode, and offers excellent specific capacity which is in its lowest state around 4.5 times that of the theoretical specific capacity of the traditional graphite electrodes. This binder free Silicon based electrode has been realized through a controllable and scalable process, and can be implemented in high performance LIBs.
