Abstract:In this expository article, we outline a basic theory of group (co)homology and prove a cohomological formulation of the Local Reciprocity Law: $${\rm Gal}(L/K)^{\rm ab} \cong H_T^{-2}({\rm Gal}(L/K),\mathbb{Z}) \cong H_T^{0}({\rm Gal}(L/K),L^\times) \cong \frac{K^\times}{{\rm Nm}_{L/K}(L^\times)}$$ We first recall basic facts about local fields and homological algebra. Then we define group (co)homology, Tate cohomology, and furnish a toolbox. The Local Reciprocity Law is proven in an abstract cohomological setting, then applied to the case of local fields.

Abstract:We draw concrete consequences from our arithmetic duality for two-dimensional local rings with perfect residue field. These consequences include class field theory, Hasse principles for coverings and $K_{2}$ and a duality between divisor class groups and Brauer groups. To obtain these, we analyze the ind-pro-algebraic group structures on arithmetic cohomology obtained earlier and prove some finiteness properties about them.

Cup products on curves over finite fields

Abstract:Suppose $k$ is a finite field, that $C$ is a smooth projective geometrically irreducible curve over $k$, and that $n$ is a positive integer not divisible by the characteristic of $k$. In this paper we compute cup products of elements of the étale cohomology groups $\mathrm{H}^1(C,\mathbb{Z}/n)$ and $\mathrm{H}^1(C,\mu_n)$. Over the algebraic closure $\overline{k}$ of $k$, such cup products are connected to values of the Weil pairing on the $n$-torsion of the Jacobian of $\overline{C} = \overline{k} \otimes_k C$ by using a fixed isomorphism between $\mathbb{Z}/n$ and $\mu_n$ over $\overline{C}$. Over $k$, such cup products are more subtle due to the fact that they take values in the group $\mathrm{H}^2(C,\mu_n)=\mathrm{Pic}(C)/n\cdot \mathrm{Pic}(C)$ rather than in the group $\mathrm{H}^2(\overline{C},\mu_n) = \mathbb{Z}/n$.

Character sheaves on tori over local fields

Abstract:Let $\breve{K}$ be a complete discrete valuation field with an algebraically closed residue field ${k}$ and ring of integers $\breve{O}$. Let $T$ be a torus defined over $\breve{K}$. Let $L^+T$ denote the connected commutative pro-algebraic group over ${k}$ obtained by applying the Greenberg functor to the connected Néron model of $T$ over $\breve{O}$. Following the work of Serre for the multiplicative group, we first compute the fundamental group $\pi_1(L^+T)$. We then study multiplicative local systems (or character sheaves) on $L^+T$ and establish a local Langlands correspondence for them. Namely, we construct a canonical isomorphism of abelian groups between the group of multiplicative local systems on $L^+T$ and inertial local Langlands parameters for $T$. Finally, we relate our results to the classical local Langlands correspondence for tori over local fields due to Langlands, via the sheaf-function correspondence.

On the direct product of fields with an application

Abstract:In this paper, the (infinite) direct product of fields is investigated. In particular, the finiteness of a given set is characterized in terms of some ring-theoretic observations. Next, a certain localization (whose multiplicative set formed by cofinite sets) of the direct product of fields is studied. Finally, it is shown that every set $X$ can be made into a separated scheme, and this scheme is an affine scheme if and only if $X$ is a finite set.

Abstract:The “local class field theory”, which can be defined as the description of the extensions of a given local field K in terms of the algebraic and analytic objects depending ony on the base K is one of the central problems of modern number theory. The theory developed for the abelian extensions, around the fundamental works of Artin and Hasse in the first quarter of the 20th century. It is natural to ask if one could construct this theory including the non-abelian extensions of the base field. There are two approches to this problem. One approach is based on the ideas of Langlands, and the other on Koch. Koch’s method was later generalized by Fesenko and Koch-de Shalit for some non-abelian extensions of the base field. On the other hand, Ikeda and Serbest extended Fesenko’s works to construct a non-abelian local class field theory. But there is a restriction for the base field K. In this study, we extended Ikeda-Serbest’s construction of the local reciprocity map for a certain local field to any local field. Also we have shown that the extended map satisfies the certain functoriality and ramification theoretic properties.

Abstract:Let be an inner form of a general linear group over a non-Archimedean local field. We fix an arbitrary irreducible representation of . Building on the work of Lapid-Mínguez on the irreducibility of parabolic inductions, we show how to define a full subcategory of the category of smooth representations of some , on which the parabolic induction functor is fully-faithful. A key ingredient of our proof for the fully-faithfulness is constructions of indecomposable representations of length 2. Such result for a special situation has been previously applied in proving the local non-tempered Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for non-Archimedean general linear groups. In this article, we apply the fully-faithful result to prove a certain big derivative arising from Jacquet functor satisfies the property that its socle is irreducible and has multiplicity one in the Jordan-Hölder sequence of the big derivative.

Torsion phenomena for zero-cycles on a product of curves over a number field

Abstract:For a smooth projective variety $X$ over a number field $k$ a conjecture of Bloch and Beilinson predicts that the kernel of the Albanese map of $X$ is a torsion group. In this article we consider a product $X=C_1\times\cdots\times C_d$ of smooth projective curves and show that if the conjecture is true for any subproduct of two curves, then it is true for $X$. Additionally, we produce many new examples of non-isogenous elliptic curves $E_1, E_2$ with positive rank over $\mathbb{Q}$ for which the image of the natural map $E_1(\mathbb{Q})\otimes E_2(\mathbb{Q})\xrightarrow{\varepsilon} \text{CH}_0(E_1\times E_2)$ is finite, including the first known examples of rank greater than $1$. Combining the two results, we obtain infinitely many nontrivial products $X=C_1\times\cdots\times C_d$ for which the analogous map $\varepsilon$ has finite image.

On products of K-moduli spaces

Abstract:We study the K-moduli space of products of Fano varieties in relation to the product of K-moduli spaces of the product components. We show that there exists a well-defined morphism from the product of K-moduli stacks of Fano varieties to the K-moduli stack of their product. Furthermore, we show that this morphism is an isomorphism if any two varieties with different irreducible components are non-isomorphic, and a torsor if they are. Our results rely on the theory of stacks and previous work by Zhuang.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified. We prove that, if a cuspidal overconvergent Hilbert cuspidal form has small slopes under $U_p$-operators, then it is classical. Our method follows the original cohomological approach of Coleman. The key ingredient of the proof is giving an explicit description of the Goren-Oort stratification of the special fiber of the Hilbert modular variety. A byproduct of the proof is to show that, at least when $p$ is inert, of the rigid cohomology of the ordinary locus has the same image as the classical forms in the Grothendieck group of Hecke modules.

Abstract:Suppose $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $\Q$. At the 1983 ICM the first author formulated some conjectures that propose a close relationship between the explicit class field theory construction of certain abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields and an explicit construction that (conjecturally) produces almost all of the rational points on $E$ over those fields. Those conjectures are to a large extent settled by recent work of Vatsal and of Cornut, building on work of Kolyvagin and others. In this paper we describe a collection of interrelated conjectures still open regarding the variation of Mordell-Weil groups of $E$ over abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields, and suggest a possible algebraic framework to organize them.

Abstract:We develop Kummer theory for algebraic function fields in finitely many transcendental variables. We consider any finitely generated Kummer extension (possibly, over a cyclotomic extension) of an algebraic function field, and describe the structure of its Galois group. Our results show in a precise sense how the questions of computing the degrees of these extensions and of computing the group structures of their Galois groups reduce to the corresponding questions for the Kummer extensions of their constant fields.

Abstract:Suppose $C$ is a smooth projective curve of genus 1 over a perfect field $F$, and $E$ is its Jacobian. In the case that $C$ has no $F$-rational points, so that $C$ and $E$ are not isomorphic, $C$ is an $E$-torsor with a class $\delta(C)\in H^1(\text{Gal}(\bar F/F), E(\bar F))$. Then $\delta(C)$ determines a class $\beta \in \text{Br}(E)/\text{Br}(F)$ and there is a Fourier-Mukai equivalence of derived categories of (twisted) coherent sheaves $\mathcal D(C) \xrightarrow{\cong} \mathcal D(E, \beta^{-1})$. We generalize this result to higher dimensions; namely, we prove it also for torsors over abelian varieties.

Abstract:Pour $K$ un corps global (corps de nombres ou corps de fonctions d'une variable sur un corps fini $F$), on dispose de théorèmes de dualité classiques (Tate, Poitou, Nakayama) pour la cohomologie galoisienne à valeurs dans des tores et des modules abéliens finis. Nous établissons de tels théorèmes pour $K$ le corps des fonctions d'une courbe projective et lisse sur le corps $F={\bf C}((t))$ des séries formelles en une variable sur le corps des complexes. Cela permet de contrôler le défaut du principe de Hasse et l'approximation faible pour les espaces homogènes sous un tore. Il y a ici des différences avec le cas classique ($K$ corps global), et aussi avec le cas récemment étudié où $K$ est un corps de fonctions d'une variable sur un corps $p$-adique. Par exemple, la $K$-rationalité d'un tore n'implique pas ici la validité du principe de Hasse pour ses espaces principaux homogènes. ---------------- Over a global field $K$ (number field, or function field of a curve over a finite field $F$), arithmetic duality theorems for the Galois cohomology of tori and finite Galois modules have long been known. More recent work investigates the case where $K$ is the function fields of of a curve over a $p$-adic field. For $K$ the function field of a curve over the formal series field $F={\bf C}((t))$, we establish analogous duality theorems. We thus control the obstruction to the local-global principle and to weak approximation for homogeneous spaces of tori. There are differences with the afore described cases. For example the Hasse principle need not hold for principal homogeneous spaces of a $K$-rational torus.

The relative class number one problem for function fields, II

Abstract:We establish that any finite extension of function fields of genus greater than 1 whose relative class group is trivial is Galois and cyclic. This depends on a result from a preceding paper which establishes a finite list of possible Weil polynomials for both fields. Given this list, we analyze most cases by computing options for the splittings of low-degree places in the extension, then consider the effect of these options on the Weil polynomials of certain isogeny factors of the Jacobian of the Galois closure. In one case, we use instead an analysis based on principal polarizations, modeled on an argument of Howe.

Secular dynamics of the three body problem: application to the upsilon Andromedae planetary system

Abstract:(abbreviated) We use a semi-numerical approach to study the secular behavior of a system composed of a central star and two massive planets in eccentric co-planar orbits. We show that the secular dynamics of this system can be described using only two parameters, the ratios of the semimajor axes and the planetary masses. The main dynamical features of the system are presented in geometrical pictures that allows us to investigate a large domain of the secular phase space of this three-body problem without time-expensive numerical integrations of the equations of motion, and without any restriction on the magnitude of the planetary eccentricities. We show that three different regimes of secular motion with respect to the secular angle $\Delta\varpi$ are possible: they are circulation, oscillation (around 0 and $180^\circ$), and high eccentricity libration in a nonlinear secular resonance. The first two regimes are a continuous extension of the classical linear secular perturbation theory; the last is a new feature, hitherto unknown, in the secular dynamics of the three-body problem.
