Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has been severely polluting the atmosphere and deteriorating human beings' sustainable lives. Therefore, development of gas sensors for high-selectivity and high-sensitivity detection of NO2 has been attracting increasing attention. The state-of-the-art inorganic NO2 gas sensors require harsh fabrication conditions or toxic materials, making the devices intrinsically eco-unfriendly. Furthermore, in most cases the sensors work at high temperatures. These disadvantages severely impede their practical applications. Herein, we report a room-temperature and highly-integrated NO2 sensor composed of p-type self-assembled peptide fibrillar nanoforests (SPNFs) scaffolded with n-type SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions. The p-n conformations provide efficient access to target gases and allow reliable electron transformations, while the SPNFs afford a large specific surface area and multiporous structures for gas adsorption and SnO2 NPs dispersion, resulting in an ultrahigh selectivity for NO2 detection. Especially, the sensing performance can be optimized by modulating the thickness and density of the SPNFs, showing a high response, short response and recovery times, along with a low detection limitation. Our strategy demonstrates the development of a bioinspired platform by utilizing peptide selfassemblies to fabricate integrated sensors for polluting gas detections.

Abstract:Herein, a strategy is proposed for the self-assembly hybrid hierarchical structure of a WO3 nanosheets/W18O49 nanowires (HHW) composite via a one-step hydrothermal method. The method requires only H2O and surfactants to regulate the hydrolysis rate of tungsten ions to yield the desired morphology. The self-assembled growth of the hierarchical structures is principally governed by the competition and equilibrium between the surfactant concentration, precipitation coefficient, and hydrolysis rate of tungsten ions. The hybrid hierarchical HHW material exhibits an ultrahigh-sensitive response, up to 1678 upon exposure to 10 ppm of NO2, which demonstrates a significant enhancement over that of conventional hierarchical gas-sensitive nanosheet or nanowire materials. The ultrahigh-sensitive response and excellent selectivity toward NO2 by HHW is considered to derive from the synergistic effect of rapid electron separation and transport by the W18O49 nanowires and the abundance of adsorption sites offered by the WO3 nanosheets. This low-cost and rapid synthesis of self-assembled hybrid hierarchical materials provides an effective strategy for high-performance gas sensors or catalysts.

Abstract:The urgent need for real-time detection of toxic and harmful NO2 in the environment has attracted much attention, which requires to improve detection accuracy and portability at low temperature even room temperature. In this work, we reported a mesoporous ZnO:In grown on the side of two-dimensional g-C3N4 by conventional hydrothermal intercalation. At normal mode the sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity at 120 °C, with a response value of 200 for 15 ppm NO2 and a response/recovery time of 18/23 s. At UV assisted mode, the sensor shows improved response value to low concentration of NO2 at room temperature and can achieve instantaneous recovery effect. The reasons for improving the sensitivity, response value, response/recovery time, and cyclic stability of the gas sensor to NO2 are not only related to the abundant mesoporous, large specific surface area, and doping of sensitizer, but also affected by the heterojunction effect of improving the photogenic charge separation efficiency. The strategy of dual-mode operating conditions presented in this work provides an effective design idea for high-sensitivity and efficient NO2 detection devices.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate room temperature NO 2 sensors based on ZnO/rGO nanocomposites by a facile hydrothermal method. The ZnO nanoparticles (20 ~ 50 nm) were wrapped by film-like rGO with different contents (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 wt %). They all exhibit p-type sensing toward NO 2 at room temperature. The content of rGO shows an obvious effect on the sensing properties. The ZnO NPs-1% rGO has a high response of 5.21 to 10 ppm NO 2 with a response/recovery time of 198/144 s. The sensing mechanism is discussed. The gas-sensitive properties are derived from the strong synergistic effect between the smaller particles of ZnO and rGO.

The Influence of Different ZnO Nanostructures on NO2 Sensing Performance

Abstract:Three different ZnO nanostructures (nanorods/flowers/spheres) were prepared through facile hydrothermal method or water bath, whose sensing properties to NO2 were investigated in detail at room temperature activated by UV light (365 nm LED). The sensing results showed that ZnO nanospheres exhibit the highest response of 29.4-5 ppm NO2, which can be attributed to their biggest specific surface area and the most amount of adsorbed oxygen species on the surface. In contrast, ZnO nanorods show the fastest response and recovery speed (9 and 18 s to 5 ppm NO2, respectively) due to their highest crystallinity, least surface defects and unidirectional electron transfer path, which is much faster than most reported literatures. With regard to the ZnO nanoflowers, both the gas-sensing response and the response and recovery speed are between ZnO nanorods and ZnO nanospheres. Furthermore, the stability, selectivity, and the moisture resistance of three different ZnO nanostructures were also researched.

Abstract:The MoS2/ZnO nanostructures with MoS2 thickness of ∼100 nm showed a maximum response of 31.2% to 50 ppm NO2 at the optimist temperature. The synthesized MoS2/ZnONWs nanostructures also exhibited excellent sensitivity, recovery, repeatability, selectivity and with relatively low working temperatures, with a low detection concentration of 200 ppb.

Abstract:The development of NO 2 gas sensors with lower operating temperature and good thermal stability is always a challenge to solve. In this work, 2D loose porous ZnO/GaN heterogeneous nanosheets were synthesized by ultrasonic mixing, in which ZnO nanosheets and GaN nanoparticles were prepared by hydrothermal method and solid-state pyrolysis, respectively. BET characterization result showed that the specific surface area of loose porous ZnO nanosheets was 57.24 m 2 /g, and XPS tests proved that the formation of heterogeneous interface between ZnO and GaN can effectively increase the number of negative oxygen ion species on the surface. Noticeably, 15 mol % ZnO/GaN composites (Ga:Zn) exhibited the highest response of 134.5–2 ppm of NO 2 at 125 °C and lower limit of detection of 20 ppb. Furthermore, it showed outstanding selectivity, repeatability and long-term stability. The excellent gas-sensing properties can be attributed to the loose porous structure of ZnO and the formation of n-n heterojunction between ZnO and GaN. The gas-sensing mechanism of ZnO/GaN composites to NO 2 was also discussed in detail.

Constructing 2D Porous ZnO Gas Sensors Based on Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Assisted Zn-MOF Nanosheets for NO2 Detection

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) ZnO nanomaterials are promising for gas sensing, because of their large surface area, abundant active sites, and rapid charge transfer. However, it is challenging to prepare 2D ZnO nanosheet gas sensors with high sensing performance, due to the tight interlayer stack and low adsorptive property of ZnO for NO2 molecules. Herein, we synthesized Zn-MOF nanosheets employing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the structure-directing agent, further through pyrolysis of the Zn-MOF to obtain 2D ZnO nanosheet gas sensors. As anticipated, the 2D ZnO gas sensors exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for NO2, and the optimal sample could achieve a response value of 162 at the working temperature of 160 °C, which is 10 times higher than that of pristine ZnO. Meanwhile, experimental and DFT results showed that PVP plays critical roles in the lateral lattice growth of 2D Zn-MOF nanosheets, while the existence of PVP makes the ZnO gas sensors with rich porous property and more oxygen vacancy after the pyrolysis process, which promoted the adsorption, activity, and surface reaction for NO2 molecules. It provides a new approach for the application of 2D ZnO nanosheets in the NO2 detection field.

Abstract:Very recently, metal–organic framework (MOF)-based derived oxides demonstrated excellent sensing performance to NO2. However, the study on the enhancement of gas-sensing characteristics by near-infrared (NIR) light for MOF-based derived oxides is still limited. In this work, we introduced the synthesis of MOF-derived SnO2 nanosheets by solvothermal and annealing processes. The structural composition and microstructure of SnO2 nanosheets were studied by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller. The derived SnO2 nanosheet-based gas sensor has an extremely low theoretical detection limit to NO2 (45 ppb), ultrahigh response (1500 to 100 ppm), outstanding stability, and ideal selectivity. Furthermore, NIR illumination shortens the SnO2 sensor’s NO2 adsorption/desorption process. Moreover, we also proposed that NIR-excited photoelectrons were instrumental in optimizing the NO2 gas-sensing performance of SnO2 sensors. Therefore, MOF-based SnO2 sensors are attractive for high response and rapid detection of NO2 at low operating temperatures and are expected to be widely used in the preparation of NIR-enhanced NO2 gas monitoring sensors.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks based heterostructures have gained wide attention recently for various applications. Specifically metal oxide and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocomposites have been synthesized for gas sensing with reasonable performance. In this work, large-area Au nanoparticle (NP) decorated ZnO@ZIF-8 core-shell heterostructure nanorods (NRs) are synthesized for ppb-level UV-activated NO2 sensing at room temperature. Large-area ZnO NRs are first grown and ZIF-8 shells are subsequently formed on ZnO with the result of various types of ZnO@ZIF-8 NRs. The ZnO@3ZIF-8 NRs have the highest response and Au NPs are finally decorated on the NR surfaces. The ZnO@3ZIF-8/Au sensor shows high responses of 260% and 34700% toward 0.05 and 3.75 ppm NO2 gas, respectively. An excellent linear sensitivity of 95.1 ppm-1 has been achieved and the estimated lowest detection limit is 0.3 ppb. It is noteworthy that the linear dynamic range is extended by at least 8 times after ZIF-8 addition and the sensitivity is enhanced by 12 times after Au NP decoration. The sensor is also highly NO2 selective against other gases including NO, NH3, SO2, CO, CH3OH, CH2O, C2H5OH, and C3H6O. The excellent performance of the ZnO@3ZIF-8/Au sensor shows good potential for environmental NO2 sensing.

Abstract:Abstract Ever-increasing concerns over air quality and the newly emerged internet of things (IoT) for future environmental monitoring are stimulating the development of ultrasensitive room-temperature gas sensors, especially for nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), one of the most harmful air pollution species released round-the-clock from power plants and vehicle exhausts. Herein, tin dioxide nanorods/ethylenediamine-modified reduced graphene oxide (SnO 2 /EDA-rGO) heterojunctions with selective adsorption and electronic structure modulation were engineered for highly sensitive and selective detection of NO 2 at room temperature. The modified EDA groups not only enable selective adsorption to significantly enrich NO 2 molecules around the interface but also realize a favorable modulation of SnO 2 /EDA-rGO electronic structure by increasing the Fermi level of rGO, through which the sensing performance of NO 2 is synergistically enhanced. The response of the SnO 2 /EDA-rGO sensor toward 1 ppm NO 2 reaches 282%, which exceeds the corresponding SnO 2 /rGO sensor by a factor of 2.8. It also exhibits a low detection limit down to 100 ppb, enhanced selectivity, and rapid response/recovery kinetics. This approach to designing a novel heterojunction with significantly enhanced chemical and electric effects may shed light on the future engineering of gas-sensing materials.

Abstract:The detection of air pollutant nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is of great importance arising from its great harm to the ecological environment and human health. However, the detection range of most NO2 sensors is ppm-level, and it is still challenging to achieve lower concentration (ppb-level) NO2 detection. Herein, 2D tin diselenide nanoflakes decorated with 1D zinc oxide nanowires (SnSe2/ZnO) heterojunctions were first reported by facile hydrothermal and ultra-sonication methods. The response of the fabricated SnSe2/ZnO sensor enhances 3.41 times on average compared with that of pure SnSe2 sensor to 50-150 ppb NO2 with a high detection sensitivity (22.57 ppm-1) at room temperature. In addition, the SnSe2/ZnO sensor has complete recovery, negligible cross-sensitivity, and small relative standard deviation (6.98%) during the 1 month sensing test, which can meet the requirements for NO2 detection in environmental monitoring. The enhanced NO2 sensing performance can be attributed to the n-n heterojunction constructed between SnSe2 and ZnO. The as-prepared sensor based on SnSe2/ZnO hybrid significantly promotes the development of the low detection limit of the NO2 sensor at room temperature.

Abstract:Semiconducting metal oxides can detect low concentrations of NO2 and other toxic gases, which have been widely investigated in the field of gas sensors. However, most studies on the gas sensing properties of these materials are carried out at high temperatures. In this work, Hollow SnO2 nanofibers were successfully synthesized by electrospinning and calcination, followed by surface modification using ZnO to improve the sensitivity of the SnO2 nanofibers sensor to NO2 gas. The gas sensing behavior of SnO2/ZnO sensors was then investigated at room temperature (~20 & DEG;C). The results showed that SnO2/ZnO nanocomposites exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity to 0.5 ppm of NO2 gas with a response value of 336%, which was much higher than that of pure SnO2 (13%). In addition to the increase in the specific surface area of SnO2/ZnO-3 compared with pure SnO2, it also had a positive impact on the detection sensitivity. This increase was attributed to the heterojunction effect and the selective NO2 physisorption sensing mechanism of SnO2/ZnO nanocomposites. In addition, patterned electrodes of silver paste were printed on different flexible substrates, such as paper, polyethylene terephthalate and polydimethylsiloxane using a facile screen-printing process. Silver electrodes were integrated with SnO2/ZnO into a flexible wearable sensor array, which could detect 0.1 ppm NO2 gas after 10,000 bending cycles. The findings of this study therefore open a general approach for the fabrication of flexible devices for gas detection applications.
Facile solvothermal synthesis of ZnO/Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposites for NO2 detection at low working temperature

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide sensors with high performance have been expected for practical applications in environmental monitoring. Herein, we demonstrate a NO2 gas sensor with enhanced performance based on ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites. The hawthorn shaped ZnO spheres/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites with regular morphology are successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. The NO2 sensing properties are greatly improved by introducing the Ti3C2Tx sheets which significantly reduce the operating temperature and improve the gas sensitivity. The response to 8 ppm NO2 improves to 3.4, and the response and recovery characteristic substantially speeds up to 191 s and 254 s at lower working temperature. The excellent NO2 sensing properties of ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites are attributed to the high surface area, the modulation of carrier density, the formation of ZnO/Ti3C2Tx heterojunction. Such excellent performance showed the promising application of hawthorn shaped ZnO spheres/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites for NO2 gas sensing.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) sensors experience the drawback of requiring high operating temperatures because of the low charge transfer ability of gas-sensing materials. Herein, an advanced NO 2 sensor resistant to interference is designed using the interfacial energy barriers of a hierarchical CuO/ZnO composite. With the benefits of abundant desirable defect features, and the amplification effect of heterojunctions, the sensor based on CuO/ZnO composite with 10% Cu(CH 3 COO) 2 ·H 2 O (S2) shows outstanding performance in terms of faster response and recovery time (1.8-fold/1.1-fold), higher response (3.1-fold), and lower power consumption (140°C decrease) compared to the pristine ZnO sensor. Furthermore, the composite sensor exhibits long-term stability and reproducibility, indicating the potential promise of CuO/ZnO heterojunctions in interference-resistant detection of low-concentration NO 2 in real applications. This study not only provides a rational solution to designing advanced gas sensors by tuning the interfacial energy barriers of heterojunctions, but also provides a fundamental understanding of CuO structures in the gas-sensing field.

Abstract:Au decorated TiO2 nanotubes array was successfully fabricated on a Ti-Au alloy via an electrochemical anodization process. The crystal phase and microstructure of the TiO2 nanotubes array were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. Au particles were well distributed among TiO2 nanotubes and acted as the catalyst. It was found that the sensor based on Ti-Au alloy anodization can be a promising sensor which was highly sensitive to low concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and response at room temperature. The sensitivity of Au-decorated TiO2 nanotubes sensor was 36.11 to 8 ppm NO2 at room temperature. Meanwhile, the resistance signal of Au-decorated TiO2 sensor changes quickly within 80 s upon exposure to 8 ppm NO2 at 35 degrees C, the undecorated TiO2 however takes much more time (> 110 s) to respond and the resistance signal remains unstable.
Flower-like Hydroxyfluoride-Sensing Platform toward NO 2 Detection

Abstract:We report for the first time using zinc hydroxyfluoride (ZnOHF) for efficient NO2 gas detection. The prepared ZnOHF had a unique flower-like architecture self-assembled by nanorods with a diameter of 150 nm and length of 2–3 μm. The sensing performance toward NO2 detection indicated that the prepared ZnOHF exhibited high response (82.71), short response/recovery time (13 s/35 s) to 10 ppm of NO2, and excellent selectivity at 200 °C, greatly outperforming the ZnO raw material. ZnOHF could work in a wide detection window ranging from 100 ppb to 50 ppm, implying its practical application prospects in both industry and daily life. The excellent sensing behavior of ZnOHF originated mainly from the negligible oxygen ions adsorbed on the material surface, which was caused by the higher work function of ZnOHF. Pd@Pt Core-Shell Nanocrystal-Decorated ZnO Nanosheets for ppt-Level NO2 Detection

Abstract:Bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs) have obtained significant attention due to their unique advantages of the intrinsic properties of individual metals and synergistic enhancements resulting from the electronic coupling between two constituent metals. In this work, Pd@Pt core-shell NCs were prepared through a facile one-pot solution-phase method, which had excellent dispersion and uniform size. Concurrently, ZnO nanosheets were prepared via a hydrothermal method. To explore their potential in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensing applications, sensitive materials based on ZnO nanosheets with varying mass percentages of Pd@Pt NCs were generated through an impregnation process. The sensor based on 0.3 wt % Pd@Pt-ZnO exhibited remarkable performance, demonstrating a substantial response (Rg/Ra = 60.3) to 50 ppb of NO2 at a low operating temperature of 80 °C. Notably, this sensor reached an outstanding low detection limit of 300 ppt. The enhancement in gas sensing capabilities can be attributed to the sensitization and synergistic effects imparted by the exceptional catalytic activity of Pd@Pt NCs, which significantly promoted the reaction. This research introduces a novel approach for the utilization of core-shell structured bimetallic nanocrystals as modifiers in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) materials for NO2 detection.
Interface Engineered WS2/ZnS Heterostructures for Sensitive and Reversible NO2 Room Temperature Sensing

Abstract:The inherent high surface areas and unique semiconducting properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) make them attractive for the sensing applications. However, the challenges of sensitivity, recoverability and stability still need to be overcome for the rapidly developing fields of TMD based gas sensors. With the general advantages of 2D nanomaterials, construction of 2D TMD based heterostructure is an effective approach for improving their sensing performance by the synergistic effects of hybridization. Herein, we design a novel tungsten disulfide (WS2)/zinc sulfide (ZnS) based TMD heterostructure to realize quick and reversible nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection at room temperature (25 degrees C). Specifically, the engineered 2D/0D WS2/ZnS p-n heterostructure gives a desired response of 32.5 to 5 ppm NO2 with a fast response speed of 4 s, which is dramatically enhanced compared with that of pure WS2 nanosheets. More importantly, WS2/ZnS heterostructure based gas sensor can achieve full recovery state after each sensing cycle without using external energies, showing an excellent recyclability at room temperature. The optimal sensor also exhibits low detection concentration of 10 ppb, high selectivity as well as outstanding long-term stability. Such impressive features originating from the synergistic effects of WS2/ZnS heterostructure have been discussed in detail from the geometrical, electronic and chemical effects. These outstanding sensing properties of WS2/ZnS heterostructure sensor imply the possibility of using this novel nanostructure in highly efficient NO2 room temperature sensing applications.

Abstract:Development of low-temperature NO 2 sensors has recently gained extensive interests. However, how to realize their over-all sensing abilities of high response and rapid detection is still challenging. Herein, adhering to the concept of sustainable development, waste willow catkins have been selected as template and soaked in Zn/In nitrates solution with two types of molar ratios. Then, the obtained precursors were placed in a furnace to undergo calcination at 500 °C, generating two biomorphic In 2 O 3 /ZnO heterogeneous microtubes. All the tubes were assembled by well-crystallized small-size nanoparticles. Thereinto, 16.4 wt% In 2 O 3 /ZnO sensor exhibits well comprehensive gas-sensing performances towards trace NO 2 at low 92 °C. That is, its response value ( S = 883) and recovery time (10 s) to 10 ppm NO 2 are higher and faster than those of most one-dimensional ZnO-based NO 2 sensors reported so far. Meanwhile, it also has good selectivity and low detection limit (10 ppb), as well as satisfactory long-term stability and humidity resistance. Therefore, the mesoporous 16.4 wt% In 2 O 3 /ZnO heterogeneous microtubes rich in oxygen vacancy defects are available as a candidate for detecting trace NO 2 at low temperature.
