Abstract:The recent interest in microscopic autonomous systems, including microrobots, colloidal state machines, and smart dust, has created a need for microscale energy storage and harvesting. However, macroscopic materials for energy storage have noted incompatibilities with microfabrication techniques, creating substantial challenges to realizing microscale energy systems. Here, we photolithographically patterned a microscale zinc/platinum/SU-8 system to generate the highest energy density microbattery at the picoliter (10-12 liter) scale. The device scavenges ambient or solution-dissolved oxygen for a zinc oxidation reaction, achieving an energy density ranging from 760 to 1070 watt-hours per liter at scales below 100 micrometers lateral and 2 micrometers thickness in size. The parallel nature of photolithography processes allows 10,000 devices per wafer to be released into solution as colloids with energy stored on board. Within a volume of only 2 picoliters each, these primary microbatteries can deliver open circuit voltages of 1.05 ± 0.12 volts, with total energies ranging from 5.5 ± 0.3 to 7.7 ± 1.0 microjoules and a maximum power near 2.7 nanowatts. We demonstrated that such systems can reliably power a micrometer-sized memristor circuit, providing access to nonvolatile memory. We also cycled power to drive the reversible bending of microscale bimorph actuators at 0.05 hertz for mechanical functions of colloidal robots. Additional capabilities, such as powering two distinct nanosensor types and a clock circuit, were also demonstrated. The high energy density, low volume, and simple configuration promise the mass fabrication and adoption of such picoliter zinc-air batteries for micrometer-scale, colloidal robotics with autonomous functions.

Abstract:Advances in microelectronics have enabled the use of miniaturized computers for autonomous intelligence at the size of a dust particle less than one square millimeter across and a few hundred micrometers thick, creating an environment for ubiquitous computing. However, the size mismatch between microbatteries and microelectronics has emerged as a fundamental barrier against the take‐off of tiny intelligent systems requiring power anytime anywhere. Mainstream microbattery structures include stacked thin films on the chip or electrode pillars and on‐chip interdigitated microelectrodes. Nevertheless, available technologies cannot shrink the footprint area of batteries while maintaining adequate energy storage. Alternatively, the on‐chip self‐assembly process known as micro‐origami is capable of winding stacked thin films into Swiss‐roll structures to reduce the footprint area, which exactly mimics the manufacture of the most successful full‐sized batteries—cylinder batteries. In addition to discussing in detail the technical difficulties of reducing the size of on‐chip microbatteries with various structures and potential solutions, this Perspective highlights the following two basic requirements for eventual integration in microcomputers: minimum energy density of 100 microwatt‐hour per square centimeter and monolithic integration with other functional electric circuits on the chip. Dust‐sized computers need on‐chip batteries to enable operation at anytime and anywhere. This Perspective summarizes various technologies to construct microbatteries on the chip and technical difficulties in achieving high energy density at a minimal footprint area. More importantly, a new structure using a micro‐origami approach is reported to achieve high energy density and a minimal footprint.

Abstract:Miniaturized energy-storage components are important to self-powered microelectronics. Microbatteries based on 3D electrode architectures hold great potential to meet the demands of high-power and high energy densities. Despite the progress in microelectrode fabrication, reports of high-performance, fully integrated 3D microbatteries are still limited due to strict material requirements and more importantly, significant hierarchical processing complexities. Here, a 3D lithium-ion microbattery made from solvothermally synthesized sub-10 nm LiMn2O4/Li4Ti5O12 nanocrystals and a novel copolymer gel electrolyte is presented and is shown to possess superior capacity retention (40% at 300 C) and high-power density (855.5 mu Wcm(-2) mu m(-1)) comparable to some of the best microsupercapacitors. The customized microelectrodes are fabricated by solvent-assisted imprint lithography of well-dispersed nanoparticle ink and the battery cell is integrated vertically through layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly. The fabrication strategy proposed here can be applied to a variety of electroactive materials. This work provides a combinatorial approach and highlights the synergetic effects of material synthesis, processing and device design for achieving high-performance micropower sources.

The system-level performance relies on the interplay among these complementary elements and the fabrication technologies that enable them. While new materials, fabrication, and bioinspired designs are enabling advancements toward insect-scale untethered and autonomous robots, challenges remain in achieving high power efficiency fast actuation and heterogeneous integration. This article overviews the state of the art, opportunities, and challenges covered in this issue of MRS Bulletin.

Abstract:This article describes the design, implementation, and use of a new system to investigate the behavior of small batteries that power sensor and wireless systems that consume relatively high power during infrequent short activity periods. The system enables simple, low-cost, long-term (days to weeks) monitoring of batteries under such loads. Data collected by this system revealed a major cause of failures in wildlife tracking tags, an effect called concentration polarization, which causes a transient increase in the internal resistance of the battery. The article describes the goals and the design of the system, failures that it revealed, mechanisms to mitigate the limitations of miniature batteries, as well as a methodology to optimize and validate the design of tags powered by miniature batteries.

Abstract:A micro‐origami technology able to wind up a flat layer stack into a Swiss roll offers a novel design approach for building a bridge between bulk and microscale batteries. The on‐chip MnO2 Swiss‐roll electrode with a zincophilic interface attains milliampere‐hour‐level energy density, showing great potential for powering sub‐millimeter smart devices. As substantial progress has been made to miniaturize intelligent microsystems to the sub‐square‐millimeter scale, there is a desperate need to move beyond existing microbattery technologies to offer adequate energy at the same footprint. A micro‐origami technology able to wind up a flat layer stack into a Swiss roll presents a promising approach in this regard because it mimics the most successful way to make energy‐dense full‐sized batteries. Here, an on‐chip Swiss‐roll current collector made via the micro‐origami process is developed and it is infused with a MnO2 slurry comprising a zincophilic binder. The zincophilic binder layer enhances zinc ion transportability and suppresses MnO2 dissolution. The MnO2 Swiss‐roll microelectrode is used to create an on‐chip microbattery with a small electrode footprint area of 0.75 mm2, which shows a footprint capacity up to 3.3 mAh cm–2. The microbattery demonstrates a reversible capacity of more than 1 mAh cm–2 for 150 cycles. The battery stability can be improved to over 600 cycles at a 50% depth of discharge. An on‐chip integration of a microsystem with the microbattery is demonstrated. The microbatteries set foot in the untrodden sub‐square‐millimeter area providing adequate energy for ever more miniaturized intelligent microsystems.

Abstract:Purpose – This paper aims to provide an insight into recent miniaturised robot developments and applications. Design/methodology/approach – Following an introduction, this article discusses the technology and applications of miniature robots and considers swarm robotics, assembly robots, flying robots and their uses in healthcare. It concludes with a brief consideration of the emerging field of nanorobotics. Findings – This shows that all manners of miniaturised terrestrial, airborne and aquatic robots are being developed, but size and weight restraints pose considerable technological challenges, such as power sources, navigation, actuation and control. Prototypes have been developed for military, assembly, medical, environmental and other applications, as well as for furthering the understanding of swarm behaviour. In the longer term, microrobots and nanorobots offer prospects to revolutionise many aspects of healthcare, such as cancer treatment. Originality/value – This study provides details of a wide-ranging selection of miniaturised robot developments.

Abstract:Li-ion microbatteries find wide applications in microdevices. It is important to develop electrode materials with high areal capacity, excellent rate capability and superior safety for microbatteries. TiO2 nanowire arrays satisfy the requirements of high areal capacity, short transport lengths and superior safety for microbatteries, but their areal/volumetric capacity is hindered by the insufficient surface area. TiO2 nanotrees can effectively eliminate these disadvantages of TiO2 nanowires; however, the electrochemical performances of TiO2 nanotrees for Li-ion microbatteries remain unexplored. It is highly desired yet challenging to construct two-dimensional TiO2 nanobranches with an ultrathin thickness and large length on nanoarrays, to maximize the surface area and structural hierarchy of electrodes. Herein, we developed a novel synthetic strategy to fabricate TiO2 nanotrees by depositing anatase/TiO2(B) mixed phase ultrathin nanobelts onto single-crystalline anatase nanowire arrays. The nanobelt branches were several nanometers in thickness and 200-260 nm in length. The growth process and the electrochemical mechanism were investigated. The unique nanoarchitecture and optimal phase structure endow the electrode with high areal capacity and rate capability, which is the best performance for TiO2 nanowire arrays ever documented. The 2nd discharge capacity of the TiO2 nanotrees at 0.1 mA cm(-2) is ca. 267 mA h cm(-2), corresponding to a volumetric capacity of 330 mA h cm(-3). The TiO2 nanotrees have an areal capacity of 205, 141, 97 and 69 mA h cm(-2) at a current density of 0.5, 2.0, 5.0 and 10.0 mA cm(-2), respectively. The capacity can remain stable for 400 charge-discharge cycles at 1.0 mA cm(-2). The present strategy may give hints to elegant electrode designs for energy applications.
Chemical Power for Swarms of Microscopic Robots in Blood Vessels

Abstract:Microscopic robots in the bloodstream could obtain power from fuel cells using glucose and oxygen. Previous studies of small numbers of such robots operating near each other showed how robots compete with their neighbors for oxygen. However, proposed applications involve billions of such robots operating throughout the body. With such large numbers, the robots can have systemic effects on oxygen concentration. This paper evaluates these effects and their consequences for robot power generation, oxygen available to tissue and heating as such robots move with the blood. When robots consume oxygen as fast as it diffuses to their surfaces, available power decreases significantly as robots move from the lungs, through arteries to capillaries and veins. Tens of billions of robots can obtain hundreds of picowatts throughout the circuit, while a trillion robots significantly deplete oxygen in the veins. Robots can mitigate this depletion by limiting their oxygen consumption, either overall or in specific locations or situations.

Abstract:We designed microrobots in the form of autonomous and remotely guided microtubes. One of the challenges at small scales is the effective conversion of energy into mechanical force to overcome the high viscosity of the fluid at low Reynolds numbers. This can be achieved by integration of catalytic nano-materials and processes to decompose chemical fuels. However, up to now, mostly hydrogen peroxide has been employed as a fuel which renders the potential applications in biomedicine and in vivo experiments. Therefore, other sources of energy to achieve motion at the micro- nanoscale are highly sought-after. Here, we present different types of tubular micro- and nanorobots, alternative approaches to toxic fuels and also, steps towards the use of tubular microrobots as micro- and nanotools.

Abstract:The advent of the Internet of Things and smart applications such as smart cities, smart health care, and smart electronics will require the use of a vast array of sensors. Sensors are a key part of the revolution in interconnected devices. The growing need for sensing, monitoring, and collecting data at scales from small to large will help, for example, prevent future pandemics, elucidate climate change, optimize industrial processes, and train machine learning models. Recent progress in materials science, micro/nano technologies, and integrated circuits has made it possible to reduce the size and cost of sensors while integrating them into more complex machines, ranging from wearable/implantable devices to onboard laboratories for planetary exploration rovers. However, the small dimensions of miniature sensors present some challenges, including power supply, active sensing materials, and material flexibility. In this article, we review microbatteries to power miniature sensors. We discuss materials and architectures for microbatteries and their fabrication methods. We also discuss energy harvesting materials for self-powered miniature sensors. We review in detail advanced materials for active sensing, including organic, inorganic, and composite materials with emphasis on wearable/implantable sensors targeted at humans and animals. In addition, flexible electronics as well as substrates and encapsulation materials and their integration are reviewed. Finally, future perspectives and challenges of these functional materials for next-generation miniature sensors are highlighted.

Acoustic Power Management by Swarms of Microscopic Robots

Abstract:Microscopic robots in the body could harvest energy from ultrasound to provide on-board control of autonomous behaviors such as measuring and communicating diagnostic information and precisely delivering drugs. This paper evaluates the acoustic power available to micron-size robots that collect energy using pistons. Acoustic attenuation and viscous drag on the pistons are the major limitations on the available power. Frequencies around 100kHz can deliver hundreds of picowatts to a robot in low-attenuation tissue within about 10cm of transducers on the skin, but much less in high-attenuation tissue such as a lung. However, applications of microscopic robots could involve such large numbers that the robots significantly increase attenuation, thereby reducing power for robots deep in the body. This paper describes how robots can collectively manage where and when they harvest energy to mitigate this attenuation so that a swarm of a few hundred billion robots can provide tens of picowatts to each robot, on average.

Abstract:The fields of single atom engineering represent cutting-edge areas in nanotechnology and materials science, pushing the boundaries of how small we can go in engineering functional devices and materials. Nanorobots, or nanobots, are robotic systems scaled down to the nanometer level and designed to perform tasks at similarly small scales. Single atom engineering, on the other hand, involves manipulating individual atoms to create precise materials and devices with controlled properties and functionalities. By integrating single atom engineering into nanorobotics, we unlock the potential to enable the precise incorporation of multiple functionalities onto these minuscule machines with nanometer-level precision. In this perspective, we describe the nascent field of single atom engineering in nanorobotics.
Enzyme-Enabled Droplet Biobattery for Powering Synthetic Tissues

Abstract:Enzyme-enabled biobatteries are promising green options to power the next-generation of bioelectronics and implantable medical devices. However, existing power sources based on enzymatic biofuel chemistry exhibit limited scale-down feasibility due to the solid and bulky battery structures. Therefore, miniature and soft alternatives are needed for integration with implants and tissues. Here, a biobattery built from nanolitre droplets, fuelled by the enzyme-enabled oxidation of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, generates electrical outputs and powers ion fluxes in droplet networks. Optimization of the droplet biobattery components ensures a stable output current of ~13,000 pA for over 24 h, representing a more than 600-fold increase in output over previous approaches, including light-driven processes. The enzyme-enabled droplet biobattery opens new avenues in bioelectronics and bioiontronics, exemplified by tasks such as the ability to drive chemical signal transmission in integrated synthetic tissues.

Abstract:<p>The rapid development of miniaturized electronic systems stimulates the demand for microscale power sources. Microscale rechargeable batteries (μRBs) are one promising candidate for the microscale energy storage due to high energy density, long cycling stability, and excellent compatibility with electronic devices. The progress in microscale rechargeable batteries from two-dimensional to three-dimensional configurations are first summarized. The advantage of three-dimensional configurations is extensively discussed. The growing demand for high-energy-density microdevices requires significant improvement of current μRBs, thus making it urgent to obtain an in-depth understanding of electrochemical behaviors in microbatteries. In this perspective, the in-situ/in-operando analytical platforms for efficient investigation of microelectrodes are comprehensively reviewed. Moreover, the design principle of the on-site investigation of microscale batteries is highlighted. Finally, we discuss essential challenges in both device configuration and materials optimization strategies.</p>

Abstract:As intelligent microsystems develop, many revolutionary applications, such as the swallowing surgeon proposed by Richard Feynman, are about to evolve. Nonetheless, integrable energy storage satisfying the demand for autonomous operations has emerged as a major obstacle to the deployment of intelligent microsystems. A reason for the lagging development of integrable batteries is the challenge of miniaturization through microfabrication procedures. Lithium batteries, generated by the most successful battery chemistry, are not stable in the air, thus creating major manufacturing challenges. Other cations (Na+ , Mg2+ , Al3+ , K+ ) are still in the early stages of development. In contrast, the superior stability of zinc batteries in the air brings high compatibility to microfabrication protocols and has already demonstrated excellent practicability in full-sized devices. To obtain energy-dense and high-power zinc microbatteries within square-millimeter or smaller footprints, sandwich, pillar, and Swiss-roll configurations are developed. Thin interdigital and fiber microbatteries find their applications being integrated into wearable devices and electronic skin. It is foreseeable that zinc microbatteries will find their way into highly integrated microsystems unlocking their full potential for autonomous operation. This review summarizes the material development, configuration innovation, and application-oriented integration of zinc microbatteries.

Abstract:Advances in microelectronics have led to the development of on-chip intelligent microsystems that can digitalize the physical world, offering functions of sensing, data communication, and intelligent response to stimuli. Either mismatched form factors or limited energy density of available batteries compromises their integration. We report a microimprint fabrication for on-chip Zn–air microbatteries, which bypasses the complication of the catalyst incorporation on the chip at a target position. The on-chip integration of a bifunctional catalystcovalent organic framework with cobalt catalytic unitsenables the on-chip Zn–air microbattery to outperform the Zn–air primary cell, showing 3 times more volumetric energy density. It is wirelessly chargeable, and its lifetime capacity is around twice longer than that for commercially available on-chip lithium ion microbatteries. The on-chip Zn–air microbattery can drive various electronic systems. Our approach bridges a long-standing gulf between advanced materials synthesis and their on-chip integration and paves the way toward high-performance on-chip Zn–air batteries.
