Abstract:Robotic spacecraft enable exploration of our Solar System beyond our human presence. Although spacecraft have explored every planet in the Solar System, the frontiers of space robotics are at the cutting edge of landers, rovers, and now atmospheric explorers, where robotic spacecraft must interact intimately with their environment to explore beyond the reach of flyby and orbital remote sensing. Here, we describe the tremendous growth in space robotics missions in the past 7 years, with many new entities participating in missions to the surface of the Moon, Mars, and beyond. We also describe the recent development of aerial missions to planets and moons, as exemplified by the Ingenuity helicopter on Mars and the Dragonfly mission to Titan. We focus on suborbital robotics—landers, rovers, and aerial vehicles—with associated challenges in sensing, manipulation, mobility, and system-level autonomy.

Automated Design of CubeSats and Small Spacecrafts

Abstract:The miniaturization of electronics, sensors and actuators has enabled the growing use of CubeSats and sub-20 kg spacecraft. Their reduced mass and volume has the potential to translate into significant reductions in required propellant and launch mass for interplanetary missions, earth observation and for astrophysics applications. There is an important need to optimize the design of these spacecraft to better ascertain their maximal capabilities by finding optimized solution, where mass, volume and power is a premium. Current spacecraft design methods require a team of experts, who use their engineering experience and judgement to develop a spacecraft design. Such an approach can miss innovative designs not thought of by a human design team. In this work we present a compelling alternative approach that extends the capabilities of a spacecraft engineering design team to search for and identify near-optimal solutions using machine learning. The approach enables automated design of a spacecraft that requires specifying quantitative goals, requiring reaching a target location or operating at a predetermined orbit for a required time. Next a virtual warehouse of components is specified that be selected to produce a candidate design. Candidate designs are produced using an artificial Darwinian approach, where fittest design survives and reproduce, while unfit individuals are culled off. Our past work in space robotic has produced systems designs and controllers that are human competitive. Finding a near-optimal solution presents vast improvements over a solution obtained through engineering judgment and point design alone. The approach shows a credible pathway to identify and evaluate many more candidate designs than it would be otherwise possible with a human design team alone.

Abstract:CubeSats are small satellites built in standard sizes and form factors, which have been growing in popularity but have thus far been largely ignored within the field of astronomy. When deployed as space-based telescopes, they enable science experiments not possible with existing or planned large space missions, filling several key gaps in astronomical research. Unlike expensive and highly sought-after space telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), whose time must be shared among many instruments and science programs, CubeSats can monitor sources for weeks or months at time, and at wavelengths not accessible from the ground such as the ultraviolet (UV), far-infrared (far-IR) and low-frequency radio. Science cases for CubeSats being developed now include a wide variety of astrophysical experiments, including exoplanets, stars, black holes and radio transients. Achieving high-impact astronomical research with CubeSats is becoming increasingly feasible with advances in technologies such as precision pointing, compact sensitive detectors, and the miniaturisation of propulsion systems if needed. CubeSats may also pair with the large space- and ground-based telescopes to provide complementary data to better explain the physical processes observed.

Abstract:The Lunar Gateway is expected to be positioned on-orbit around the Moon or in a Halo orbit at the L2 Lagrange point. The proposed Lunar Gateway is a game-changer for enabling new, high-priority lunar science utilizing Cu-beSats and presents a refreshing new opportunity for utilization of these small spacecraft as explorers. In context, CubeSats are being stretched to their limits as interplanetary explorers. The main technological hurdles include high-bandwidth communications and reliable high delta-v propulsion. Advances in deep-space attitude determination and control has been made possible from the recent NASA JPL MarCO missions. Due to these limitations, CubeSats are primarily designed to be dropped-off from a larger mission. The limited mass and volume have required compromises of the onboard science instruments, longer wait times to send back science data to Earth, shorter mission durations or higher accepted risk. With the Lunar Gateway being planned to be closer to the Moon, it will provide significant savings for a propulsion system and provide a primary relay for communication apart from the DSN and enable tele-operated command/control. These three factors can simplify the mission enabling routine deployment of CubeSats into lunar orbit and enable surface missions. In this paper, we present preliminary designs of 2 CubeSat lunar landers that will explore the lunar pits, Mare Tranquilitatis and the remnant magnetic fields Reiner Gamma.

Open-Source CubeSat Solar Panels: Design, Assembly, Testing, and On-Orbit Demonstration

Abstract:Cube satellites, or CubeSats, are small satellites commonly used to perform Earth imaging and on-orbit scientific experiments. CubeSats are often powered using expensive, inflexible commercial-off-the-shelf solar panels, largely due to a lack of flight-qualified open-source alternatives. Here, we describe the design of customizable, deployable solar panels, offering an open-source, cost-effective alternative. Towards a fully open-source CubeSat, our designs have mission-tailored power generation capabilities and simple electrical and mechanical integration. The solar panel designs were demonstrated on-orbit on three satellites in the Northern SPIRIT constellation and will be on AlbertaSat's Ex-Alta~3 satellite, which will launch in 2025. The design files, assembly procedures, and best practices will be open-source-published online. This work lowers the barrier of entry into space, making satellite design easier and less expensive -- students helping students design better satellites.

Abstract:The development of space robots is vital to broadening human cognitive boundaries. Compared with rigid space robots with limited degrees of freedom, soft robots exhibit apparent advantages of dexterity, adaptability, and robustness. Successes such as inflatable antennas have attracted interest in soft space mechanisms. Soft robots are expected to have a role in future on‐orbit missions and planetary exploration. The development of space robots is vital to broadening human cognitive boundaries. Space robots have been deployed in space science experiments, extravehicular operations, and deep space exploration. The application of space robots undoubtedly reduces the risk and cost of space activities. Traditional space robots primarily utilize rigid structures, resulting in limited degrees of freedom, which restricts their operational capabilities. In contrast, soft robots with greater flexibility and robustness may be used for future space exploration. Soft robots applied in space environments must overcome significant challenges associated with ultrahigh vacuum, microgravity, extreme temperatures, and high‐energy radiation. Herein, a comprehensive analysis of the key advantages of soft robots is presented based on the special requirements of the space environments for soft robots. Furthermore, brief insights into how soft robots must be changed in terms of their design, modeling, fabrication, sensing, and control to adapt to space environments are discussed. Specifically, soft robot scenarios with potential space application value are introduced. Finally, opinions regarding the potential directions of soft space robots are provided.

Abstract:Recent breakthroughs in technology have led to a thriving "new space" culture in low-Earth orbit (LEO) in which performance and cost considerations dominate over resilience and reliability as mission goals. These advances create a manifold of opportunities for new research and business models but come with a number of striking new challenges. In particular, the size and weight limitations of low-Earth orbit small satellites make their successful operation rest on a fine balance between solar power infeed and the power demands of the mission payload and supporting platform technologies, buffered by on-board battery storage. At the same time, these satellites are being rolled out as part of ever-larger constellations and mega-constellations. Altogether, this induces a number of challenging computational problems related to the recurring need to make decisions about which task each satellite is to effectuate next. Against this background, GomSpace and Saarland University have joined forces to develop highly sophisticated software-based automated solutions rooted in optimal algorithmic and self-improving learning techniques, all this validated in modern nanosatellite networked missions operating in orbit.

Abstract:CubeSats have the potential to expand astrophysical discovery space, complementing ground-based electromagnetic and gravitational-wave observatories. The CubeSat design specifications help streamline delivery of instrument payloads to space. CubeSat planners have more options for tailoring orbits to fit observational needs and may have more flexibility in rapidly rescheduling observations to respond to transients. With over 1000 CubeSats launched, there has been a corresponding increase in the availability and performance of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components compatible with the CubeSat standards, from solar panels and power systems to reaction wheels for three axis stabilization and precision attitude control. Commercially available components can reduce cost CubeSat missions, allowing more resources to be directed toward scientific instrument payload development and technology demonstrations.

Abstract:Small satellites (smallsats) provide low-cost access to space and have historically been used for flight technology demonstrations and limited-function space science activities. Novel antenna technologies have enabled high-performance smallsat telecommunications, science in Earth orbit, and the first CubeSat mission to deep space. In the past five years, technologists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have designed, tested, and successfully flown these innovative and enabling smallsat antennas. This article describes these innovations and their impact on smallsat performance for recent and future NASA missions.

Planetary Exploration Using CubeSat Deployed Sailplanes

Abstract:Exploration of terrestrial planets such as Mars are conducted using orbiters, landers and rovers. Cameras and instruments onboard orbiters have enabled global mapping of Mars at low spatial resolution. Landers and rovers such as the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) carry state-of-the-art instruments to characterize small localized areas. This leaves a critical gap in exploration capabilities: mapping regions in the hundreds of kilometers range. In this paper, we extend our work on CubeSat-sized sailplanes with detailed design studies of different aircraft configurations and payloads, identifying generalized design principles for autonomous sailplane-based surface reconnaissance and science applications. We further analyze potential wing deployment technologies, including conventional inflatables with hardened membranes, use of composite inflatables, and quick-setting foam. We perform detailed modeling of the Martian atmosphere and possible flight patterns at Jerezo crater using the Mars Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (MRAMS) to provide realistic atmospheric conditions at the landing site for NASA's 2020 rover. We revisit the feasibility of the Mars Sailplane concept, comparing it to previously proposed solutions, and identifying pathways to build laboratory prototypes for high-altitude Earth based testing. Finally, our work will analyze the implications of this technology for exploring other planetary bodies with atmospheres, including Venus and Titan.

Soft Robotic Perspective and Concept for Planetary Small Body Exploration

Abstract:Tens of thousands of planetary small bodies (asteroids, comets, and small moons) are flying beside our Earth with little understanding. Explorers on the surfaces of these bodies, unlike the Lunar or Mars rovers, have only few attempts and no sophisticated solution. Current concerns mainly focus on landing uncertainties and mobility limitations, which soft robots may suitably aid utilizing their compliance and adaptivity. In this study, we present a perspective of designating soft robots for the surface exploration. Based on the lessons from recent space missions and an astronomy survey, we summarize the surface features of typical small bodies and the associated challenges for possible soft robotic design. Different kinds of soft mobile robots are reviewed, whose morphology and locomotion are analyzed for the microgravity, rugged environment. We also propose an alternative to current asteroid hoppers, as a case of applying progress in soft material. Specifically, the structure is a deployable cube whose outer shell is made of shape memory polymer, so that it can achieve morphing and variable stiffness between liftoff and landing phases. Dynamic simulations of the free-fall landing are carried out with a rigid counterpart for comparison. The results show that the soft deployed shell can effectively contribute to dissipating the kinetic energy and attenuating the excessive rebounds.

Abstract:There is a widely held view in the astronomical community that unmanned robotic space vehicles are, and will always be, more efficient explorers of planetary surfaces than astronauts (e.g. Coates, 2001; Clements 2009; Rees 2011). Partly this is due to a common assumption that robotic exploration is cheaper than human exploration (although, as we shall see, this isn't necessarily true if like is compared with like), and partly from the expectation that continued developments in technology will relentlessly increase the capability, and reduce the size and cost, of robotic missions to the point that human exploration will not be able to compete. I will argue below that the experience of human exploration during the Apollo missions, more recent field analogue studies, and trends in robotic space exploration actually all point to exactly the opposite conclusion.

Abstract:This paper explores the wide-ranging topography of micro-propulsion systems that have been flown in different small satellite missions. CubeSats, known for their compact size and affordability, have gained popularity in the realm of space exploration. However, their limited propulsion capabilities have often been a constraint in achieving certain mission objectives. In response to this challenge, space propulsion experts have developed a wide spectrum of miniaturized propulsion systems tailored to CubeSats, each offering distinct advantages. This literature review provides a comprehensive analysis of these micro-propulsion systems, categorizing them into distinct families based on their primary energy sources. The review provides informative graphs illustrating propulsion performance metrics, serving as beneficial resources for mission planners and satellite designers when selecting the most suitable propulsion system for a particular mission requirement.

Abstract:Several essential services, such as cellular phones, the Internet, television, navigation, weather prediction, and remote sensing, rely on satellites in low-Earth orbits, the technology for which is fairly mature by now. With the advent of the 21st century, space exploration has evolved to accomplish various complex and challenging missions, both within and beyond low-Earth orbits. Next-generation space missions will focus on more complex orbital operations, which include active debris removal; on-orbit servicing through rendezvous and docking; cooperative missions with multiple satellites, such as constellation and cluster formations; and so on. In addition, traversing uncharted territories, such as halo orbits around Lagrange points, probing multiple asteroids and comets across the solar system and beyond, and autonomous landing on planetary bodies, have become part of challenging missions that are increasingly common. Several space organizations of various countries (including capable private players) are showing great interest in such missions for a variety of reasons, such as basic curiosity to explore the universe and its origin and harnessing minerals and energy from other planetary bodies.

Abstract:The next frontier in solar system exploration will be missions targeting extreme and rugged environments such as caves, canyons, cliffs and crater rims of the Moon, Mars and icy moons. These environments are time capsules into early formation of the solar system and will provide vital clues of how our early solar system gave way to the current planets and moons. These sites will also provide vital clues to the past and present habitability of these environments. Current landers and rovers are unable to access these areas of high interest due to limitations in precision landing techniques, need for large and sophisticated science instruments and a mission assurance and operations culture where risks are minimized at all costs. Our past work has shown the advantages of using multiple spherical hopping robots called SphereX for exploring these extreme environments. Our previous work was based on performing exploration with a human-designed baseline design of a SphereX robot. However, the design of SphereX is a complex task that involves a large number of design variables and multiple engineering disciplines. In this work we propose to use Automated Multidisciplinary Design and Control Optimization (AMDCO) techniques to find near optimal design solutions in terms of mass, volume, power, and control for SphereX for different mission scenarios.

Abstract:The rapid cost growth of flagship space missions has created a crisis for astronomy and planetary science. We have hit the funding wall. For the past 3 decades scientists have not had to think much about how space technology would change within their planning horizon. However, this time around enormous improvements in space infrastructure capabilities and, especially, costs are likely on the 20-year gestation periods for large space telescopes. Commercial space will lower launch and spacecraft costs substantially, enable cost-effective on-orbit servicing, cheap lunar landers and interplanetary cubesats by the early 2020s. A doubling of flagship launch rates is not implausible. On a longer timescale it will enable large structures to be assembled and constructed in space. These developments will change how we plan and design missions.

A Novel Methodology for Autonomous Planetary Exploration Using Multi-Robot Teams

Abstract:One of the fundamental limiting factors in planetary exploration is the autonomous capabilities of planetary exploration rovers. This study proposes a novel methodology for trustworthy autonomous multi-robot teams which incorporates data from multiple sources (HiRISE orbiter imaging, probability distribution maps, and on-board rover sensors) to find efficient exploration routes in Jezero crater. A map is generated, consisting of a 3D terrain model, traversability analysis, and probability distribution map of points of scientific interest. A three-stage mission planner generates an efficient route, which maximises the accumulated probability of identifying points of interest. A 4D RRT* algorithm is used to determine smooth, flat paths, and prioritised planning is used to coordinate a safe set of paths. The above methodology is shown to coordinate safe and efficient rover paths, which ensure the rovers remain within their nominal pitch and roll limits throughout operation.

Abstract:Modular self-assembling on-orbit robots have the potential to reduce mission costs, increase reliability, and permit on-orbit repair and refueling. Modules with a variety of specialized capabilities would self-assemble from orbiting inventories. The assembled modules would then share resources such as power and sensors. As each free-flying module carries its own attitude control actuators, the assembled system has substantial sensor and actuator redundancy. Sensor redundancy enables sensor fusion that reduces measurement error. Actuator redundancy gives a system greater flexibility in managing its fuel usage. In this paper, the control of self-assembling space robots is explored in simulations and experiments. Control and sensor algorithms are presented that exploit the sensor and actuator redundancy. The algorithms address the control challenges introduced by the dynamic interactions between modules, the distribution of fuel resources among modules, and plume impingement.
GNC of the SphereX Robot for Extreme Environment Exploration on Mars

Abstract:Wheeled ground robots are limited from exploring extreme environments such as caves, lava tubes and skylights. Small robots that can utilize unconventional mobility through hopping, flying or rolling can overcome these limitations. Mul-tiple robots operating as a team offer significant benefits over a single large ro-bot, as they are not prone to single-point failure, enable distributed command and control and enable execution of tasks in parallel. These robots can complement large rovers and landers, helping to explore inaccessible sites, obtaining samples and for planning future exploration missions. Our robots, the SphereX, are 3-kg in mass, spherical and contain computers equivalent to current smartphones. They contain an array of guidance, navigation and control sensors and electronics. SphereX contains room for a 1-kg science payload, including for sample return. Our work in this field has recognized the need for miniaturized chemical mobility systems that provide power and propulsion. Our research explored the use of miniature rockets, including solid rockets, bi-propellants including RP1/hydrogen-peroxide and polyurethane/ammonium-perchlorate. These propulsion options provide maximum flight times of 10 minutes on Mars. Flying, especially hovering consumes significant fuel; hence, we have been developing our robots to perform ballistic hops that enable the robots to travel efficiently over long distances. Techniques are being developed to enable mid-course correction during a ballistic hop. Using multiple cameras, it is possible to reconstitute an image scene from motion blur. Hence our approach is to enable photo mapping as the robots travel on a ballistic hop. The same images would also be used for navigation and path planning. Using our proposed design approach, we are developing low-cost methods for surface exploration of planetary bodies using a network of small robots.
