Abstract:PurposeThe aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of ultrasound guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of cervical metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) from papillary thyroid carcinoma.Methods54 metastatic LNs confirmed by percutaneous biopsy in 33 patients with previous total thyroidectomy and radioiodine therapy were enrolled in this retrospective study. US and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) examinations were performed before ablation. Follow-up consisted of conventional US, CEUS, thyroglobulin (Tg) level at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months and every 6 months thereafter. In 3 months after ablation, US-guided core needle biopsy (CNB) was performed in the center, at the edge of the ablation area to exclude recurrence.ResultsTechnical success was obtained in all 54 lymph nodes (100%) without immediate or later major complications occurred. With a mean follow-up of 21 ± 4 months (range 12–24 months), there were no evidence of recurrence at ablated sites. After RFA, 33 metastatic LNs completely disappeared (33/54, 61.1%) and 21 metastatic lymph nodes remained as small scarlike lesions (21/54, 38.9%) at the last follow-up visit. The mean volume reduction ratio (VRR) was 32.7 ± 8.6% (range 21.2–59.3%), 46.8 ± 9.7% (range 33.6–68.1%), 62.5 ± 12.1% (range 42.5–95.4%), 77.1 ± 10.6% (range 54.3–100.0%), 89.2 ± 8.3% (range 68.7–100.0%) and 94.9 ± 5.3% (range 78.2–100.0%) at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months after RFA respectively. Significant differences in the VRR were found between every two follow-up visits (P < 0.001). At the last follow-up visit, the mean serum Tg level decreased from 10.2 ± 5.1 ng/ml (range 0.8–16.2 ng/ml) to 1.1 ± 0.8 ng/ml (range 0.2–3.1 ng/ml) (P < 0.001).ConclusionsUltrasound guided percutaneous RFA for cervical metastatic LNs from papillary thyroid carcinoma is a feasible, effective and safe therapy. This procedure shows a nonsurgical therapeutic option that can eradicate the lesions with a very low complication rate.

Abstract:Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) offers a minimally invasive solution for benign, autonomously functioning (AFTN), and malignant thyroid nodules. The technique utilizes high-frequency alternating current to induce coagulative necrosis, effectively destroying target tissue. RFA is performed in the outpatient setting with local anesthesia and sonographic guidance. RFA is effective in producing substantial volume reduction rates in benign nodules and is emerging as a favorable option in AFTN and papillary thyroid microcarcinoma. RFA's advantages include lower complication rates, minimal scarring, and improved quality-of-life outcomes compared to surgery. However, its efficacy in larger and recurrent malignancies requires further investigation.

Abstract:ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the longer-term efficacy of ultrasound (US)-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for treating locally recurrent papillary thyroid cancer (PTC).MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed 29 patients who underwent RFA for 46 recurrent PTC between September 2008 and April 2012 and were subsequently followed up for at least 5 years. Follow-up included size change on US and thyroglobulin (Tg) level at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months and every 6–12 months thereafter. Any complications were reported during follow-up.ResultsThe mean follow-up duration after RFA was 80 ± 17.3 months (range, 60–114 months). Tumor volume decreased significantly, from 0.25 ± 0.42 mL before ablation to 0.01 ± 0.08 mL at the final evaluation (p < 0.001), with a mean volume reduction of 99.5% ± 2.9%. Forty-two of the 46 treated tumors (91.3%) had completely disappeared by the final evaluation. The mean serum Tg level decreased from 2.55 ± 4.7 to 0.75 ± 1.83 ng/dL (p < 0.001). There were no delayed complications associated with RFA during the follow-up period.ConclusionsRFA seems to be an effective minimally invasive therapy for the treatment of locally recurrent PTC even in the longer-term period.Key Points• RFA is an effective local control treatment option for recurrent PTCs even in the longer-term period with mean tumor VRR of 99.5% and the complete disappearance of the treated tumors in 91.3%.• The mean serum Tg level decreased significantly after RFA and biochemical remission rate was 51.7%.• No delayed complication after RFA for local recurrent PTC.

Abstract:Background:Thyroid nodules (TNs) usually appearing in the general population have the potential possibility of malignant transformation and common problems of jugular oppression such as dyspnea and hoarseness. We performed this meta-analysis to evaluate the efficiency of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of benign TNs in accord with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statements.Methods:Published literatures were retrieved from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus up to January 27, 2016. Pooled standard mean difference with 95% confidence interval was estimated by fixed- or random-effects model depending on heterogeneity, which was calculated using the Cochran Q, (2), and I-2 statistics. The quality of the articles was evaluated by the Newcastle-Ottawa scale.Results:Meta-analysis of data from 1090 patients with 1406 benign TNs in 20 articles showed that with the subgroup stratified by nodule volume, they were significantly decreased at 1, 3, 6, 12, and the last follow-up months, when comparing post-RFA with the initial nodule volume. In addition, the volume also notably declined by cold and hot nodules. By subgrouping into the largest diameter, symptom score, cosmetic score, thyrotropin, triiodothyronine, free thyroxine level, and vascularity, the pooled data indicated that there was a decrease in largest diameter, symptom score, cosmetic score, triiodothyronine level, and vascular scale, an unchanged free thyroxine, and an increased thyrotropin level after RFA. The publication bias for this particular study is presented in the following groups: nodule volume reduction at 6 months and last follow-up month after RFA and symptom score.Conclusion:In summary, by pooling of these studies we recommended that RFA indeed has the advantages in improving outcomes and providing better prognosis for patients with benign TNs.

Abstract:AIM: To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and long-term outcomes of ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of primary papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 37 patients with 38 PTMC nodules underwent RFA at a power of 20 W between September 2014 and December 2017. The clinical data of these patients were reviewed retrospectively and analysed. Imaging studies of the nodules were conducted, and the patients' thyroid function was assessed before RFA; 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after RFA; and every 6 months thereafter. The volumes and volume reduction rate (VRR) of the nodules were also calculated. RESULTS: RFA with a low power of 20 W was used in the treatment of 37 patients with 38 PTMC nodules. All nodules achieved complete ablation, no complications occurred, and thyroid function was not affected. During follow-up, the volume of the nodules gradually decreased. Twelve months after ablation, the mean volumes of the nodules significantly decreased to 0.01+/-0.03 ml with a VRR of 99.34+/-3.49%. At a median follow-up of 6 (range: 1-18) months, 37 of the 38 nodules were completely absorbed, and no recurrence was observed in all 37 patients. CONCLUSIONS: Low-power RFA showed good safety and promising efficacy outcomes for the treatment of PTMC. Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of percutaneous ultrasound-guided thermal ablation in the treatment of cervical metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) from papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 77 patients with 79 LNs ablated by microwave ablation (MWA) or radiofrequency ablation (RFA) between September 2018 and October 2022 were enrolled in this study. After treatment, patients were followed up with measurement of diameters of LNs and serum thyroglobulin (s-Tg) at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months and annually thereafter. The paired t-test was used to compare the changes of s-Tg level, diameters of LNs before and after ablation. RESULTS: There were no serious complications related to ablation while one case of incomplete ablation in MWA was found during follow-up. The mean longest and shortest diameter of the ablated LNs reduced from 11.6 ± 4.3 mm to 5.0 ± 4.1 mm (p < 0.001), and from 6.1 ± 1.9 mm to 3.0 ± 2.5 mm (p < 0.001) at the last follow-up visit. Besides, the final volume reduction rate (VRR) was 61.8 ± 56.4% (range, –67.0 –100%). The complete disappearance rate was 46.8%, but there were 4 (5.1%) LNs becoming bigger than before. The average s-Tg level was 9.2 ± 26.6 ng/mL, a data significantly decreased to 3.7 ± 7.0 ng/mL at the last follow-up, but no statistical difference was shown. CONCLUSION: Thermal ablation is an effective and safe modality for the treatment of metastatic LNs from PTC.

Abstract:ObjectiveMinimally invasive therapies are gaining interest because of the indolence and excellent prognosis of low-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for low-risk PTC and to determine the effects of ablation on subsequent surgical management.MethodsA medical record review was conducted including patients with low-risk PTC who underwent surgery after RFA from July 2015 to July 2021. Demographic characteristics, tumor characteristics, ablation procedures, surgical findings, and pathological changes were reviewed for all patients. The primary outcomes were surgical and pathological changes in post-ablation patients.ResultsOf the 10 patients with 11 PTCs, 9 (90%) were women; the median (SD) patient age was 41.5 (8.2) years. The maximum diameter range of PTCs was 3.0−12.0 mm. All 10 patients underwent rigorous RFA procedure involving a four-step approach, and had received surgical management. Intraoperatively, no patients had muscle and nerve injuries, and mild adhesion of the post-ablation lesions with the anterior cervical muscle was observed in two cases. Histopathologically, no residual PTCs were observed in the ablated areas in all patients. Central lymph node metastasis (LNM) was found in three (30.0%, pN1a). Occult PTCs were observed in three cases (30.0%).ConclusionsOur findings suggest that low-risk small PTCs can be completely treated with rigorous RFA, which does not affect subsequent surgical management, if necessary. RFA may be a treatment option, but occult PTCs and clinically negative LNMs may be overlooked. Abstract:To evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for treating locally recurrent papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). This retrospective study involved 32 patients with pathologically confirmed locally recurrent PTC. The ablation zone was assessed by contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) after RFA. At baseline, 6 and 12 months and every 6 months or 12 months thereafter, the following results were recorded: recurrence rate, largest diameter, volume, volume reduction rate (VRR) of recurrent lesions, serum thyroglobulin (Tg) level and complications. 58 recurrent lesions in 32 patients were successfully ablated with RFA. The mean follow-up time was 73.19 ± 12.68 months (range, 60 to 98 months). At the last follow-up, almost all ablated lesions disappeared completely, and only one lesion showed scar-like changes. Nine (28.13%) patients developed new locally recurrent tumors; they were successfully treated with repeat RFA sessions. No new recurrent lesions were found during the follow-up. The largest diameter and volume of recurrent lesions decreased from 13.71 ± 6.48 mm and 520.43 ± 627.85 mm 3 to 0 each at the end of observation period ( p < .001). The average VRRs at 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 months and last follow-up after RFA were 54.17%, 72.90%, 82.28%, 89.30%, 92.57%, 96.60%, 96.88%, 98.14% and 100% respectively. The median of serum Tg level was decreased from 1.48 ng/mL to 0.00 ng/mL ( p < .05). No complications were reported during the follow-up. US-guided RFA is an effective and safe option for treating locally recurrent PTC in selected patients, with favorable long-term outcomes.

Efficacy of Radiofrequency Ablation in Autonomous Functioning Thyroid Nodules: A Comprehensive Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that has recently emerged as a treatment option for autonomous functioning thyroid nodules (AFTNs), offering a less invasive alternative to surgery. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the efficacy of RFA for AFTNs. Method: Global databases of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched from 1990 until January 5, 2024, for studies on AFTNs undergoing RFA that presented volume reduction ratio (VRR) for at least one of 1, 3, 6 or 12 months post-operative follow-up with the results presented as means. The primary outcomes were VRR and TSH normalization rate, and the secondary outcomes were the cosmetic score, symptom score, and post-procedure complications. Heterogeneity was assessed by Cochrane and I2 statistics, and a random-effects model was used for meta-analysis. The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42024499932). Results: A total of 10 eligible studies with a total sample size of 254 were included. The pooled VRR after 1, 3, 6, and 12 months of follow-up post-treatment with RFA was 46.6% (95% CI: 40.3-52.9%), 62% (95% CI: 57.6-66.4%), 67.4% (95% CI:62.3-72.6%), and 77.2% (95% CI: 79.2-81.5%), respectively. The overall rate of TSH normalization was 76.4% (95% CI: 58.1-88.4%). Based on included studies the overall rate of subclinical hypothyroidism as one of the most important side effects of this method was 4% (95% CI: 1.9%-8.1%). Conclusion: RFA emerges as a promising non-surgical treatment for AFTNs, showing high rates of TSH normalization, tumor size reduction, and improved cosmetic and symptom scores. However, further research is needed to compare RFA with surgical methods and assess long-term outcomes.

Abstract:Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive modality performed as an alternative to surgery in patients with benign thyroid nodules and recurrent thyroid cancers. As far we know there is scant data regarding the safety of radiofrequency ablation for metastatic lymph nodes. In this report, our aim was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of radiofrequency ablation for metastatic lymph nodes in patients with recurrent papillary thyroid cancer metastasis. A 63-year old man, who underwent bilateral total thyroidectomy procedure in a different hospital with the diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer one year ago, was diagnosed to have papillary thyroid cancer metastasis in single lymph nodes bilaterally in his follow-up. He underwent percutaneous radiofrequency ablation under ultrasound guidance. He was discharged home on post-operative day one uneventfully and his first control ultrasonography revealed a decrease in nodule size larger than 50% in right side of the neck and also the nodule in the left side disappeared. In conclusion, radiofrequency ablation is a safe and feasible technique for the treatment of metastatic lymph nodes in patients requiring secondary surgery due to papillary thyroid cancer metastasis.

Abstract:To evaluate the feasibility of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) on follicular neoplasm with low standard uptake value (SUV) in a Positron emission tomography (PET/CT) study.From January 2018 to July 2019, 86 consecutive patients were diagnosed with follicular neoplasm. Of the patients, 28 with PET/CT scans were enrolled in this study. All patients received ultrasound, fine/core needle aspiration, and PET/CT scan prior to treatment. In accordance with previous studies, we recommended 6 patients who had follicular neoplasm with SUVmax ≥5 undergo surgical resection due to an elevated suspicion of malignancy. For 22 patients SUVmax <5, RFA was performed using the moving shot technique. Ultrasound was performed 6 to 12 months after each procedure.Statistically significant volume reductions during follow-up between values prior to RFA and 12 months post RFA were demonstrated (12.6 ± 20.9 vs. 2.4 ± 3.0 cm3, p < 0.001). Volume reduction ratios at 6–12 months (mean: 10.1 months) after RFA were 73.3% ± 17.7%. One patient presented with vocal cord palsy and recovered within 3 months after RFA. No postprocedural hypothyroidism occurred in the RFA patients.By using PET/CT, we can select patients with low SUV follicular neoplasm. RFA offers a safe and feasible alternative treatment option for patients unsuitable or unwilling to undergo surgery.By using positron emission tomography-computed tomography, we can distinguish low SUV follicular neoplasm for radiofrequency ablation.For low SUV follicular neoplasm, RF ablation offers a safe and effective alternative treatment option for patients unsuitable or unwilling to undergo surgery.

Preliminary Results of Utrasound-Guided Percutaneous Radiofrequency Ablation in the Treatment of Refractory Non-nodular Hyperthyroidism

Abstract:Purpose: To assess the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of refractory non-nodular hyperthyroidism. Methods: This was a single-center retrospective study in 9 patients with refractory non-nodular hyperthyroidism (2 males, 7 females; median age, range, 36 years, 14-55 years) who underwent RFA between August 2018 and September 2020. The incidence of post-procedural complications, changes in thyroid volume, thyroid function and the use and dosages of anti-thyroid drugs, were compared pre- and post-RFA. Results: All patients completed the procedure successfully, and no serious complications occurred. Three months after ablation, thyroid volumes were significantly decreased with the mean volumes of the right and left lobes reduced to 45.6% (10.9 ± 2.2 ml/23.9 ± 7.2 ml, p < 0.001) and 50.2% (10.8 ± 7.4 ml/21.5 ± 11.4 ml, p = 0.001) of the volumes within 1 week after ablation. The thyroid function was gradually improved in all patients. At 3 months post-ablation, the levels of FT3 and FT4 were returned to the normal range (FT3, 4.9 ± 1.6 pmol/L vs. 8.7 ± 4.2 pmol/L, p = 0.009; FT4, 13.1 ± 7.2 pmol/L vs. 25.9 ± 12.6 pmol/L, p = 0.038), the TR-Ab level was significantly lower (4.8 ± 3.9 vs. 16.5 ± 16.4 IU/L, p = 0.027), and the TSH level was significantly higher (0.76 ± 0.88 vs. 0.03 ± 0.06, p = 0.031) than that before-ablation. Additionally, three months after RFA, the anti-thyroid medication dosages were reduced to 31.25% compared to baseline (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided RFA in the treatment of refractory non-nodular hyperthyroidism was safe and effective in this small group of patients with limited follow-up. Further studies with larger cohorts and longer follow-up are needed to validate this potential new application of thyroid thermal ablation.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been studied in solitary and reoccurring/ persistent papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) with favorable results. This case describes a patient with reoccurring PTC who underwent radiofrequency ablation. Clinical Case This is a case of a 68 year old male who was underwent an elective thyroid surgery for compressive multinodular goiter and left inferior parathyroid adenoma. Prior to his surgery he had fine needle aspiration cytologies of multiple nodules that were negative for thyroid cancer. A total thyroidectomy with excision of central cervical lymph nodes, excision of a suspicious right perithyroidal mass and a left inferior parathyroidectomy were performed. The pathology diagnosis was multifocal bilateral papillary thyroid cancer – classical type – with infiltration into perithyroidal adipose tissue and lymph node metastasis (pathological stage: mpT1b pN1a). Serum thyroglobulin was 4.9 ng/mL (reference range 1.6–59.9 ng/mL). Postoperatively, he was given adjuvant radioactive iodine (I-131 120mCi) treatment and suppressive levothyroxine at 250 μg daily, with pretreatment TSH at 14.730 μU/mL and TSH after 4 months of treatment 0.140 μU/mL. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) whole body imaging done seven days post radioactive iodine therapy showed no evidence of distant metastases. Four months after I-131 therapy, a diagnostic ultrasound for a palpable node revealed this to be a right level IIb cystic cervical lymph node (18×16×18 mm) with no overt vascularity. Serum thyroglobulin was <0.2 ng/mL and thyroglobulin antibodies were <14.4 IU/mL. FNA biopsy, with cytology showing papillary thyroid cancer. Needle washout thyroglobulin was elevated (1015.3 ng/mL, reference range < 10ng/mL). This metastatic lymph node was concluded to be recurrent papillary cancer. Surgical dissection and percutaneous alternatives were discussed with the patient. Shared decision making between surgery, intervention radiology and the patient concluded that a less invasive procedure was preferred and the solitary node was a candidate for percutaneous ablation. Post ablation surveillance ultrasonography showed an 80% volume reduction (11×8×12 mm) in node size six weeks post intervention and a 95% volume reduction at six months (8×5×7 mm), with decreased cystic appearance and no vascularity. No complications were reported after the procedure. Conclusion Current guidelines recommend that the mainstay of recurrent thyroid cancer is surgery, followed by radioactive iodine therapy and suppressive thyroid hormone replacement treatment, external beam radiotherapy and/ or chemotherapy. However within recent years, image guided ablation techniques such as radiofrequency ablation has been explored and has become an alternative in selective who wish to avoid extensive lymph node dissection. Multiple studies unanimously report a node volume reduction rate (VRR) of greater than 50%, with some studies reporting almost 99% VRR within 12-24 months; suggesting a role for RFA to replace 'berry picking surgery' in selected patients. Abstract:BACKGROUND: In thyroid gland, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been applied to both recurrent cancers and benign nodules, although, according to the American Thyroid Association (ATA) and the Korean Society of Thyroid Radiology (KSThR) guidelines, surgery is the first-line treatment for follicular neoplasm. However, it has been argued that follicular neoplasm with lower risk of malignancy can be managed by close follow-up. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of RFA of small follicular neoplasms, examining reductions in volume and related clinical problems, and making observations over long-term follow-up.METHODS: We evaluated 10 follicular neoplasms in 10 patients who were treated with RF ablation between 2009 and 2011. A RF generator and an 18-gauge internally cooled electrode were used to perform complete ablation of the whole nodules. Changes in nodules or ablated zones on follow-up ultrasound, and complications during and after RF ablation were evaluated.RESULTS: The mean follow-up period was 66.4 ± 5.1 months (range: 60-76 months). In eight patients, single session of RF ablation was sufficient, while two patients required two sessions. There was a significant reduction in the mean volume (99.5 ± 1.0%) of lesions, with eight ablated lesions (8/10, 80%) disappearing completely on follow-up. No recurrences were found in any ablated zones at last follow-up. Transient mild neck pain (n = 6) occurred during the procedure without requiring any medication.CONCLUSION: In addition to active surveillance, RF ablation may be an effective and safe alternative for the management of patients with small (<2 cm) follicular neoplasm suspected on thyroid biopsy and who strongly refuse surgery.

Abstract:Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a relatively new procedure for treating benign thyroid nodules. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of RFA for treating benign thyroid nodules so as to serve as a reference for future clinical practice. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of patients receiving percutaneous RFA for treating thyroid nodules from November 2014 to July 2015 in our medical center. One hundred and eight patients with a total of 380 nodules received ultrasound-guided RFA for treating thyroid nodules. Comparisons of the volume change of thyroid nodules before and after RFA treatment, post-treatment complication, and change of thyroid function, were carried out afterwards. Results: Before treatments, all patients received fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) which supported the diagnosis of benign tumor. There were 13 males and 95 females included in the study. Twenty-six cases (24.07%) had single nodule, and 82 cases (75.93%) had multiple nodules. Before treatments, the thyroid functions (FT3, FT4, and TSH) were normal originally or adjusted to normal range by endocrinology treatment. The preoperative nodules had minimum volume of 0.01mL, maximum volume of 70.89 mL, and mean volume of 1.02 +/- 4.24mL. The volume of nodules one month and three months after RFA were 0.29 +/- 0.72mL and 0.15 +/- 0.87mL, respectively. In addition, volume reduction ratio (VRR) of nodules one month and three months after RFA were 64.12% and 85.54%, respectively. Both volume of nodules and VRR had statistically significant differences for pre-operative and post-operative comparison (P<0.05). Thyroid functions were in normal range after treatments, and there was no serious complications. Conclusions: Ultrasound-guided RFA treating benign thyroid nodules had the advantages of definite efficacy, safety, strong in control ability, no incision, less damage to surrounding normal tissues and no effect on thyroid function. It can be used as one of the main treatment methods for treating benign thyroid nodules.

Abstract:Objectives Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for localized recurrent thyroid cancers. Methods We did a systematic review and meta-analysis of the scientific literature by searching the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science,Scopus and the Cochrane Library up to November 26, 2015. We assessed the pooled standard mean difference (SMD) of nodule volume, largest diameter and serum thyroglobulin ( T g) level by comparing pre-RFA with post-RFA using fixed or random-effects model. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the included studies, risk of bias in the selective populations, comparability of groups and exposure. Results We finally identified nine articles including 189 patients (male: 54 and female: 135) with 255 tumor lesions, who underwent ultrasound (US)-guided RFA beyond the mean 6 months of follow-up. The results showed that tumor volume (SWD: 0.77, 95 % CI: 0.57–0.97, I 2 = 25.9 %, p = 0.231), largest diameter (SWD: 1.56, 95 % CI: 0.94–2.17, I 2 = 82.6 %, p < 0.001) and T g level (SWD: 0.52, 95 % CI: 0.30–0.73, I 2 = 0 %, p = 0.493) were decreased and no significant publication bias was detectable. Conclusions The pooled data indicated that the prognosis improved for patients with localized recurrent thyroid cancers and RFA is a promising treatment for these patients with infeasible surgery.
