Abstract:Hydrated nickel hydroxides with partial aluminum substitution were synthesized using the conventional coprecipitation and soft chemistry methods. The soft chemistry derived sample showed better reversibility owing to the low activity for oxygen evolution during charging. Operando X-ray diffraction indicated the increased interlayer distance and decreased crystallinity during discharging caused by water accommodation.
Superlattice Formation of Crystal Water in Layered Double Hydroxides for Long‐Term and Fast Operation of Aqueous Rechargeable Batteries

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable batteries (ARBs) are gaining increasing attention as alternatives to conventional nonaqueous lithium ion batteries. However, finding electrode materials with competitive electrochemical properties in various aspects is challenging. Moreover, the operation mechanism of some of high performance electrode materials is not fully understood. Here, an alpha-phase layered double hydroxide (alpha-LDH) working in alkaline electrolytes as an ARB cathode is reported. On charge, OH- carrier ions intercalate into the interlayer space and react with protons detached from the host structure to yield crystal water. This crystal water is then arranged in a superlattice during charging to accommodate carrier ions and stabilize the structure. The solid solution mixing of cobalt and nickel also stabilizes the structure during the wide range of redox swing of Ni from 2+ to 4+. In pairing with Fe3O4/Fe(OH)(2) mixture, the alpha-LDH exhibits 198.0 mA h g(-1) at 3 A g(-1), 68.3% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles, and 172.5 mA h g(-1) at 1 min charge, demonstrating the promise of hydrated compounds for ARB electrodes. The present study elucidates that the arrangement of crystal water within the host framework plays a critical role in determining the electrochemical performance of the corresponding hydrated active compound in aqueous media.

Abstract:Nickel hydroxide electrode materials have been improved for the use in Ni-based rechargeable batteries such as Ni-H 2 , NiMH, NiCd, NiFe, and NiZn batteries. A stabilized α-phase Ni 1-x Al x (OH) 2 , synthesized using wet chemical coprecipitation methods while controlling pH accurately followed by hydrothermal treatments at 165 °C, is reported. Variations in synthetic routes, dopants and morphology had strong influence on the electrochemical performance. Morphological control, crystallinity and surface modification by Co(OH) 2 were important for the better performance. Conventional battery grade β-Ni(OH) 2 is usually made of a spherical particles, but we find that circular shaped particles can be advantageous. Hydrothermal treatments increase sample crystallinity and discharge capacity. A hydrothermal treated Ni 0.8 Al 0.2 (OH) 2 -LDH sample reaches a discharge capacity of 368 mAh g −1 and a corresponding Ni 0.9 Al 0.1 (OH) 2 reaches 405 mAh g −1 . Both have a circular-like morphology and the later shows a tap density of 1.52 g cm −3 and volumetric energy density of 531 mAh cm −3 . Only a modest Co(OH) 2 surface coating is needed to reduce the polarization behavior, increase the redox reaction reversibility and electrode kinetics via formation of CoOOH species after electrochemical oxidation.

Abstract:Spherical Al-substituted α-Ni(OH)2 for alkaline rechargeable batteries was prepared by a complexation-coprecipitation method. The morphology and structure of the samples were characterized by SEM, XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Their electrochemical performance including charge–discharge behavior, diffusion coefficient of proton (DH+), stability in strong alkaline solution and cycle life was also investigated. The results showed that the Al-substituted α-Ni(OH)2 prepared by this method manifests perfect spherical shape and the specific discharge capacity of the sample with 18.3mol% Al reaches 477mAhg−1 when the pH value of synthesis solution is 11.75. The interlayer distance, the oxygen evolution potential and the half discharge potential of the sample increase greatly with the increase of Al content. Compared with β-Ni(OH)2 without Al substitution, there are large amounts of proton defects in Al-substituted α-Ni(OH)2 which increases the diffusion coefficient of proton (DH+) measured by current pulse relaxation (CPR). The Al-substituted α-Ni(OH)2 sample shows an excellent structural stability during ageing treatment in 6M KOH solution and the loss of Al can be neglected.
Electrochemical performance of Zn-substituted Ni(OH) 2 for alkaline rechargeable batteries

Abstract:Zn-substituted Ni(OH) 2 for alkaline rechargeable batteries was prepared by a chemical coprecipitation method. The structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, and the electrochemical performance, including charge–discharge behavior, the proton diffusion coefficient ( D H+ ), and the cycle life, was investigated in detail. The results showed that the charge–discharge potentials of Zn-substituted β -Ni(OH) 2 are much higher than those of Zn-substituted α -Ni(OH) 2 . For a single α (for 30.5–48.4% Zn content) or a single β (from 0 to 9.3% Zn content) phase in the sample, the discharge potentials increase with the increase of Zn content. However, when there is an α and β phase mixture in the sample, the discharge potential decreases with an increase of Zn content. The D H+ values of Zn 0% and Zn 38.1% samples measured by the current-pulse relaxation method are much lower than those of Zn 9.3% and Zn 19.6% samples. D H+ of all the samples decreases with an increase of the depth of discharge. The effects of different Zn contents on the charge–discharge potentials of the nickel electrodes can be attributed to the differences of the electrochemical and diffusion polarization.

Abstract:In this work we developed a hydrothermal method for synthesizing amorphous Ni-Co hydroxide (NC(OH)) and in the subsequent step crystalline NiCo2O4 (NCO) has been produced using water as the solvent. For nickel-zinc batteries, NC(OH) was found to have superior performance to its NCO prepared by two-step process. The XRD pattern showed mixed phases containing both Ni and Co hydroxides (during the initial step) and in the subsequent step (calcined) the formation of cubic spinel structure was noticed. For NC(OH), aggregated particles with irregular morphology were observed while clustered nanorod-like shapes were noticed for NCO samples. The nanorod morphology was obtained through a facile approach without employing any structure-directing agent. Both NC(OH) and NCO were employed as cathodes for Ni-Zn battery studies against Zn foil anode with a polyamide-based separator soaked in 6M KOH saturated with ZnO additive was used as electrolyte. The NC(OH) had a capacity of 268 mAhg-1 against 120 mAhg-1 for NCO at a current density of 1 Ag-1. The Ni-Zn battery presents energy and power densities of 428.8 WhKg-1 and 2.68 kWKg-1, respectively surpassing the normal values reported for aqueous rechargeable batteries. This work provides a facile approach for developing bimetallic hydroxides for optimal energy storage performance.

Abstract:In this work, we report interconnected nickel sulfide (NiS) monolayer hollow spheres arrays via a facile template-assisted electrodeposition+ion exchange method. The obtained NiS arrays show unique architecture composed of cross-linked monolayer hollow spheres with diameters of ∼500nm. The NiS monolayer hollow sphere (MHSA) is composed of nanoparticles of 5–10nm. The NiS MHSA electrode is investigated as cathode of high-rate alkaline batteries, and delivers a high capacity (68.5mAhg−1 at 2Ag−1) and good cycling life (65mAhg−1 at 2Ag−1 after 3000 cycles). The interconnected monolayer hollow spheres structure is responsible for the good electrochemical performances attributed to its fast transfer paths for ions/electrons, and large contact area between and electrolyte and active materials.

Abstract:Substitution of 20 aluminium for nickel in the lattice of nickel hydroxide, prepared by coprecipitation, leads to a hydrotalcite-like compound of formula Ni 0.8 Al 0.2 (OH) 2 (CO 3 ) 0.1 .0.66H 2 O. It has been found that the compound has prolonged stability in 6m KOH solution and can be used as the positive electrode material in rechargeable alkaline batteries. The structure, morphology and composition of the compound have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The electrode comprising the aluminium-substituted nickel hydroxide has greater discharge capacity and higher utilization of active material than the β-Ni(OH) 2 electrode. Cyclic voltammetry suggest that the aluminium-substituted nickel hydroxide has better reversibility of the Ni(OH) 2 /NiOOH redox couple and higher oxygen evolution overpotential than β-Ni(OH) 2 . The mechanism of the electrode reaction has also been discussed and the proton diffusion coefficient in the compound has been determined.
Core-Shell Structured Fe3o4@Nis Nanocomposite As High-Performance Anode Material for Alkaline Nickel-Iron Rechargeable Batteries

Abstract:In this work, novel core-shell structured Fe3O4@NiS nanocomposites with different NiS:Fe3O4 mass ratios, namely x wt.% Fe3O4@NiS, have been successfully synthesized by a modified sedimentation-oxygenation method, in which the NiS outer layer (similar to 4 nm) in-situ grown on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (similar to 30 nm). For comparison propose, pure Fe3O4 as well as NiS ex-situ modified Fe3O4 composites (x wt.% Fe3O4/NiS) are also prepared and studied. When evaluated the electrochemical properties as anode material, all of the Fe3O4@NiS nanocomposites exhibit much better performance than pristine Fe3O4 material, due to the inhibition effect of NiS layer for retarding the generation of Fe (OH)(2) passivation layer, which inevitably generates in the discharge process of the electrode and will hinder the OH- getting deeper into the active particles for further electrochemical reactions. Contrast to Fe3O4/NiS, Fe3O4@NiS nanocomposites also display better electrochemical properties owing to their relatively completer and more uniform NiS coating layer. In view of the advantages of the designed in-situ nano core-shell structure as the facile controlled synthesis process and low cost of the raw materials, it is believed the environment-friendly and high-performance Fe3O4@NiS nanocomposite is a promising type of anode candidate material for iron-based alkaline rechargeable batteries. Abstract:Nickel-rich layered oxide LiNi1-x-yCoxAlyO2 (x + y < 0.4) cathodes are regarded as the most promising candidate cathodes for lithium ion batteries due to their high energy density, high work voltage and low cost. These cathodes are extensively used in electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. Generally, coprecipitation methods are frequently employed for preparing nickel-rich cathodes, but the coprecipitation of Ni2+, Co2+ and Al3+ is very complicated and uncontrollable because the solubility product constants of Ni(OH)(2), Co(OH)(2) and Al(OH)(3) are entirely different. This paper reports a modified coprecipitation method for the preparation of LiNi0.75Co0.15Al0.10O2, in which nano Al2O3 particles are employed as precipitate nucleus for the first time. Additionally, to magnify the difference between the different synthesis methods, a fluctuating pH environment is intentionally employed for the solution during the coprecipitation. Unlike the conventional method, the modified method successfully avoids the stringent demands for pH value during the synthesis, and the as-obtained LiNi0.75Co0.15Al0.10O2 cathode exhibits an excellent rate capability of 172.2 mAh g(-1) at a rate of 10 C. Even more remarkably, the LiNi0.75Co0.15Al0.10O2 cathode presents significantly improved thermal/structural stability and electrochemical performance at high temperature, indicating its great potential for use as a commercial lithium ion battery cathode in electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles.

Abstract:This paper presents a nontoxic, environmentally and friendly anode material for aqueous rechargeable battery. Two kinds of anode materials, alpha-Fe2O3 nano-needle and nano-platelet particles for aqueous rechargeable battery, are synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. The crystal structure of Fe2O3 particles is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, the obtained alpha-Fe2O3 particles are used as the anode materials of Ni-MH batteries, and their electrochemical performance is investigated. Compared with nano-platelet particles, nano-needle alpha-Fe2O3 particles show a higher specific capacity of 468 mAh g(-1) and a shorter activation time. This can be ascribed to the small particle size and large specific surface of nano-needle alpha-Fe2O3 particles. Both of these two samples possess stable and high capacity of about 140 similar to 150 mAh g(-1). Furthermore, the reaction corresponding to the stable capacity, 3Fe(OH)(2) + 2OH(-) -> Fe3O4 + 4H(2)O + 2e(-), is found in the discharge process. It is believed that the reduction of discharge capacity is mainly due to the fact that the reaction of Fe(OH)(2) to FeOOH is repressed. (C) 2014 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.
Spinel LiNixMn2-xO4 as cathode material for aqueous rechargeable lithium batteries

Abstract:Ni-doped spinel LiNixMn2−xO4 (x=0, 0.05, 0.10) samples were prepared by a sol–gel method. Structure and morphology of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Brunnauer–Emmet–Teller method and inductively coupled plasma atomic absorption spectrometry. The electrochemical behavior as a cathode material (positive mass) for aqueous rechargeable lithium batteries (ARLBs) was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, capacity measurements and cycling tests. The results show that the LiNi0.1Mn1.9O4 electrode presents the best rate and cycling performance but low reversible capacity. In contrast, the LiNi0.05Mn1.95O4 electrode shows a higher reversible capacity and relatively good cycling behavior. At a current density of 150mAg−1, LiNi0.05Mn1.95O4 delivers a reversible capacity of 102mAhg−1. At the relative high current densities of 1500 and 3000mAg−1, the LiNi0.05Mn1.95O4 electrode still delivers reversible capacities of 95.0 and 88.7mAhg−1, respectively. The Ni-doped samples show excellent cycling life in 0.5molL−1 Li2SO4 aqueous solution. The capacity retention ratios for LiNi0.05Mn1.95O4 and LiNi0.10Mn1.90O4 after 800 cycles at a current density of 1500mAg−1 are 79.4% and 91.1%, respectively, much higher than that for the undoped LiMn2O4 at only 37.8%.

Abstract:In this study, the Li[Li0.20Ni0.13Co0.13-yMn0.54-x]AlyInxO2 was synthesized via sol-gel method. electrochemical and structural attributes of nanopowders determined by the thermal analysis (TGA)/(DTA), structural analysis (XRD), (FESEM), chemical analysis (EDS) and (FTIR), BET analysis and their results appraised. X-ray diffraction analysis were performed to study the formation of nanopowders, illustrating the α- NaFeO2 structure with R ̄3m space group. FESEM Figures showed that the nanopowders have a group of the cubic and the hexagonal particles. Chemical test of the EDS proved the existence of Aluminum and Indium. TGA/DTA tests for the displayed weight loss in the nanopowders. Infrared spectroscopy studied connectivity bonds and chemical elements that are utilized in the cathode. The powders with Al (y = 0.02) and In (x = 0. 01) represented the high cycling efficiency and have better discharge capacity. Li[Li0.20Ni0.13Co0.13-0.02Mn0.54-0.01]Al0.02In0.01O2 displayed the higher cycling consistency and the better capacity in collation with those of the nonreplacement powders. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed that adding the Indium-Aluminum impurities improved the electrochemical efficiency of the Li[Li0.20Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54]O2.

Abstract:NaTi2(PO4)(3)/carbon and NaTi2(PO4)(3)/graphite composites as anode materials for aqueous rechargeable Na-ion batteries were synthesized by modified Pechini method and pyrolysis treatment in the inert atmosphere. The structures and carbon contents of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and carbon-sulfur analyzer respectively. Electrochemical properties were evaluated by galvanostatic discharge/charge test and cyclic voltammetry using a three-electrode system. The first discharge specific capacity of NaTi2(PO4)(3)/carbon composites was 128.6 mAh g(-1) and maintained 117.4 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles at a discharge rate of 2C. The reversible capacity of the composites remained 66.2 mAh g(-1) even at 20C. NaTi2(PO4)(3)/carbon composites exhibited better electrochemical performance than NaTi2(PO4)(3) and NaTi2(PO4)(3)/graphite samples. (C) The Electrochemical Society of Japan, All rights reserved.
The Compensation Effect Mechanism of Fe-Ni Mixed Prussian Blue Analogues in Aqueous Rechargeable Aluminum-Ion Batteries

Abstract:An aluminum-ion battery was assembled with potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate (KNHCF) as a cathode and Al foil as an anode in aqueous electrolyte for the first time, based on Al3+ intercalation and deintercalation. A combination of ex situ XRD, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT), and differential capacity analysis was used to unveil the crystal structure changes and the insertion/extraction mechanism of Al3+. Al3+ could reversibly insert/extract into/from KNHCF nanoparticles through a single-phase reaction with reduction/oxidation of Fe and Ni. Over long-term cycling, it was Fe rather than Ni that contributed to more capacity owing to the dissolution of Ni from the KNHCF structure, which could be expressed as a compensation effect of mixed redox centers in KNHCF. KNHCF delivered an initial discharge capacity of 46.5 mAh g(-1). The capacity decay could be attributed to the unstable interface between Al foil and the aqueous electrolyte owing to the catalytic activity of the Ni transferring from Ni dissolution of KNHCF to the Al foil anode, rather than KNHCF structure collapse; KNHCF maintained its 3 D framework structure for 500 cycles. This work is expected to inspire more exhaustive investigations of the mechanisms that occur in aluminum-ion batteries.

Abstract:Different nickel hydroxides were prepared by directly neutralizing nickel ions under various conditions including the choice of nickel salts and the use of surfactant. The influence of particle size the distribution and the crystallinity of nickel hydroxide powder on the electrochemical activity of nickel electrode were studied. The results show that nickel hydroxide with higher degree of crystallization may actually possess greater discharge capacity and better redox reversibility if the hydroxide is prepared under a longer reaction time.

Abstract:Seeking cathode materials with high areal capacity and excellent cycling tolerance is a key step to develop aqueous rechargeable zinc-based alkaline batteries with high energy density, power density and excellent stability. Here, the bilayered cathode composite (MCN-LDH@CP) of molybdate intercalated cobalt–nickel layered hydroxide nanosheets (MCN-LDH) grown on cobalt phosphate octahydrate microsheet (CP) was prepared by a two-step hydrothermal process. Molybdate intercalation significantly reduces the thickness of cobalt–nickel layered hydroxide, greatly increases its specific surface area, regulates its pore distribution, increases the crystal plane spacing, promotes the diffusion rate of hydroxide in it, and increases its specific capacity. Meanwhile, the bilayered MCN-LDH@CP electrode significantly improved the areal energy density (2.89 mWh/cm 2 ) and peak power density (111.22 mW/cm 2 ) and cycle stability (97.8 % after 7000 cycles) of the CoNi//Zn battery. The excellent stability is mainly due to the fact that the MCN-LDH overlay inhibits the loss of P element of CP and improves the structural stability of the sample. The quasi-solid-state MCN-LDH@CP//Zn battery can still charge a mobile phone even when hammered and pierced, showing excellent safety and reliability. This work opens a new avenue to develop CoNi//Zn batteries with high energy density, power density and excellent tolerance.

Abstract:Al-substituted alpha-Ni(OH)(2) which is stable in strong alkali solution was synthesized by homogeneous precipitation method and was studied by XRD, FTIR, SEM and galvanostat charge-discharge method. The results show that the crystallinity in the specimen is full. The powder morphology is an aggregate which consist of small particles. The specific discharge capacity of this material is great (290 mAh/g) and polarization is small.

Abstract:Spherical nickel hydroxide microencapsulated by cobalt has been used as the electrochemically active material in pasted-type nickel electrodes of rechargeable alkaline batteries. Cobalt coating on the surface of nickel hydroxide particles can be converted to CoOOH during charge. Well distributed CoOOH forms the conductive network on the surface of nickel hydroxide particles, thereby leading to higher utilization of active material. Cyclic voltammetric studies suggest that nickel hydroxide microencapsulated by cobalt has better reversibility of the Ni(OH)2/NiOOH redox couple, greater discharge capacity and higher oxygen evolution overpotential than nickel hydroxide with added cobalt metal powder as a conductor. The mechanism of the electrode reaction is still found to be controlled by proton diffusion, and the proton diffusion coefficient is 1. 2×10−9cm2s−1.
In Operando Synchrotron Studies of NH4+ Preintercalated V2O5·nH2O Nanobelts As the Cathode Material for Aqueous Rechargeable Zinc Batteries

Abstract:NH4+ preintercalated V2O5 center dot nH(2)O nanobelts with a large interlayer distance of 10.9 angstrom were prepared by the hydrothermal method. The material showed a large specific capacity of 391 mA.h.g(-1) at the 500 mA.g(-1) current density in aqueous rechargeable zinc batteries. In operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction demonstrated that the material experienced reversible solid-solution reaction and two-phase transition during charge-discharge cycling, accompanied by the reversible formation/decomposition of a ZnSO4Zn3(OH)(6)center dot 5H(2)O byproduct. In operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirmed the reversible reduction/oxidation of V, together with small changes in the VO6 local structure. The formation of byproduct was attributed to the dehydration of [Zn(H2O)(6)](2+), which concurrently improved the desolvation of [Zn(H2O)(6)](2+) into Zn2+. Bond valence sum map analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrated that the byproduct improved the charge transfer kinetics of the electrode. Cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique showed that the electrode reaction was dominated by ionic intercalation where the discharge capacity in the voltage window of 1.4-0.85 V was attributed to the intercalation of [Zn(H2O)(6)](2+), followed by the intercalation of Zn2+ at 0.85-0.4 V.
