Abstract:Gravitomagnetism--a motional coupling of matter analogous to the Lorentz force in electromagnetism--has observable consequences for any scenario involving differing mass currents. Examples include gyroscopes located near a rotating massive body, and the interaction of two orbiting bodies. In the former case, the resulting precession of the gyroscope is often called ``frame dragging,'' and is the principal measurement sought by the Gravity Probe-B experiment. The latter case is realized in the earth-moon system, and the effect has in fact been confirmed via lunar laser ranging (LLR) to approximately 0.1% accuracy--better than the anticipated accuracy of the Gravity-Probe-B result. This paper shows the connnection between these seemingly disparate phenomena by employing the same gravitomagnetic term in the equation of motion to obtain both gyroscopic precession and modification of the lunar orbit. Since lunar ranging currently provides a part in a thousand fit to the gravitomagnetic contributions to the lunar orbit, this feature of post-Newtonian gravity is not adjustable to fit any anomalous result beyond the 0.1% level from Gravity Probe-B without disturbing the existing fit of theory to the 36 years of LLR data.

Probing Gravity with Next Generation Lunar Laser Ranging

Abstract:Lunar and satellite laser ranging (LLR/SLR) are consolidated techniques which provide a precise, and at the same time, cost-effective method to determine the orbits of the Moon and of satellites equipped with laser retroreflectors with respect to the International Celestial Reference System. We describe the precision tests of general relativity and of new theories of gravity that can be performed with second-generation LLR payloads on the surface of the Moon (NASA/ASI MoonLIGHT project), and with SLR/LLR payloads deployed on spacecraft in the Earth–Moon system. A new wave of lunar exploration and lunar science started in 2007–2008 with the launch of three missions (Chang’e by China, Kaguya by Japan, Chandrayaan by India), missions in preparation (LCROSS, LRO, GRAIL/LADEE by NASA) and other proposed missions (like MAGIA in Italy). This research activity will be greatly enhanced by the future robotic deployment of a lunar geophysics network (LGN) on the surface of the Moon. A scientific concept of the latter is the International Lunar Network (ILN, see http://iln.arc.nasa.gov/). The LLR retroreflector payload developed by a US–Italy team described here and under space qualification at the National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF) is the optimum candidate for the LGN, which will be populated in the future by any lunar landing mission.

Abstract:We construct a set of reference frames for description of the orbital and rotational motion of the Moon. We use a scalar-tensor theory of gravity depending on two parameters of the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism and utilize the concepts of the relativistic resolutions on reference frames adopted by the International Astronomical Union in 2000. We assume that the solar system is isolated and space-time is asymptotically flat. The primary reference frame has the origin at the solar-system barycenter (SSB) and spatial axes are going to infinity. The SSB frame is not rotating with respect to distant quasars. The secondary reference frame has the origin at the Earth-Moon barycenter (EMB). The EMB frame is local with its spatial axes spreading out to the orbits of Venus and Mars and not rotating dynamically in the sense that both the Coriolis and centripetal forces acting on a free-falling test particle, moving with respect to the EMB frame, are excluded. Two other local frames, the geocentric (GRF) and the selenocentric (SRF) frames, have the origin at the center of mass of the Earth and Moon respectively. They are both introduced in order to connect the coordinate description of the lunar motion, observer on the Earth, and a retro-reflector on the Moon to the observable quantities which are the proper time and the laser-ranging distance. We solve the gravity field equations and find the metric tensor and the scalar field in all frames. We also derive the post-Newtonian coordinate transformations between the frames and analyze the residual gauge freedom of the solutions of the field equations. We discuss the gravitomagnetic effects in the barycentric equations of the motion of the Moon and argue that they are beyond the current accuracy of lunar laser ranging (LLR) observations.
Testing General Relativity with LAGEOS, LAGEOS II and Ajisai laser-ranged satellites

Abstract:The accuracy reached in the past few years by Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) allows for measuring even tiny features of the Earth's gravitational field predicted by Einstein's General Relativity by means of artificial satellites. The gravitomagnetic dragging of the orbit of a test body is currently under measurement by analyzing a suitable combination of the orbital residuals of LAGEOS and LAGEOS II. The lower bound of the error in this experiment amount to 12.92%. It is due to the mismodeling in the even zonal harmonics of the geopotential which are the most important sources of systematic error. A similar approach could be used in order to measure the relativistic gravitoelectric pericenter shift in the field of the Earth with a lower bound of the systematic relative error of 0.6% due to the even zonal harmonics as well. The inclusion of the ranging data to the Japanese passive geodetic satellite Ajisai would improve such limits to 10.78% and 0.08% respectively and would allow to improve the accuracy in the determination of the PPN parameters beta and gamma.

Limitations in Testing the Lense-Thirring Effect with LAGEOS and the Newly Launched Geodetic Satellite LARES 2

Abstract:The new geodetic satellite LARES 2, cousin of LAGEOS and sharing with it almost the same orbital parameters apart from the inclination, displaced by 180 deg, was launched last year. Its proponents suggest using the sum of the nodes of LAGEOS and of LARES 2 to measure the sum of the Lense-Thirring node precessions independently of the systematic bias caused by the even zonal harmonics of the geopotential, claiming a final $\simeq 0.2$ percent total accuracy. In fact, the actual orbital configurations of the two satellites do not allow one to attain the sought for mutual cancellation of their classical node precessions due to the Earth's quadrupole mass moment, as their sum is still $\simeq 5000$ times larger than the added general relativistic rates. This has important consequences. One is that the current uncertainties in the eccentricities and the inclinations of both satellites do not presently allow the stated accuracy goal to be met, needing improvements of 3-4 orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the imperfect knowledge of the Earth's angular momentum $S$ impacts the uncancelled sum of the node precessions, from 150 to 4900 percent of the relativistic signal depending on the uncertainty assumed in $S$. It is finally remarked that the real breakthrough in reliably testing the gravitomagnetic field of the Earth would consist in modeling it and simultaneously estimating one or more dedicated parameter(s) along with other ones characterising the geopotential, as is customarily performed for any other dynamical feature.

Gravitomagnetic Clock Effect: Using GALILEO to explore General Relativity

Abstract:All experiments to date are in remarkable agreement with the predictions of Einstein's theory of gravity, General Relativity. Besides the classical tests, involving light deflection, orbit precession, signal delay, and the gravitational redshift, modern technology has pushed the limits even further. Gravitational waves have been observed multiple times as have been black holes, arguably amongst the most fascinating objects populating our universe. Moreover, geodetic satellite missions have enabled the verification of yet another prediction: gravitomagnetism. This phenomenon arises due to the rotation of a central body, e.g., the Earth, which is dragging spacetime along. One resulting effect on satellite orbits is the observed Lense-Thirring effect. Another predicted, yet unverified, effect is the so-called gravitomagnetic clock effect, which was first described by Cohen and Mashhoon as the proper time difference of two counter-revolving clocks in an orbit around a rotating mass. A theoretical framework is introduced that describes a gravitomagnetic clock effect based on a stationary spacetime model. An incremental definition of a suitable observable follows, which can be accessed via orbit data obtained from the European satellite navigation system Galileo, and an implementation of the framework for use with real satellite and clock data is presented. The technical requirements on a satellite mission are studied to measure the gravitomagnetic clock effect at the state-of-the-art in satellite laser ranging and modelling of gravitational and non-gravitational perturbations. Based on the analysis within this work, a measurement of the gravitomagnetic clock effect is highly demanding, but might just be within reach in the very near future based on current and upcoming technology.

Experimental determination of gravitomagnetic effects by means of ring lasers

Abstract:A new experiment aimed to the detection of the gravito-magnetic Lense-Thirring effect at the surface of the Earth will be presented; the name of the experiment is GINGER. The proposed technique is based on the behavior of light beams in ring lasers, also known as gyrolasers. A three-dimensional array of ringlasers will be attached to a rigid monument; each ring will have a different orientation in space. Within the space-time of a rotating mass the propagation of light is indeed anisotropic; part of the anisotropy is purely kinematical (Sagnac effect), part is due to the interaction between the gravito-electric field of the source and the kinematical motion of the observer (de Sitter effect), finally there is a contribution from the gravito-magnetic component of the Earth (gravito-magnetic frame dragging or Lense-Thirring effect). In a ring laser a light beam traveling counterclockwise is superposed to another beam traveling in the opposite sense. The anisotropy in the propagation leads to standing waves with slightly different frequencies in the two directions; the final effect is a beat frequency proportional to the size of the instrument and its effective rotation rate in space, including the gravito-magnetic drag. Current laser techniques and the performances of the best existing ring lasers allow at the moment a sensitivity within one order of magnitude of the required accuracy for the detection of gravito-magnetic effects, so that the objective of GINGER is in the range of feasibility and aims to improve the sensitivity of a couple of orders of magnitude with respect to present. The experiment will be underground, probably in the Gran Sasso National Laboratories in Italy, and is based on an international collaboration among four Italian groups, the Technische Universitaet Muenchen and the University of Canterbury in Christchurch (NZ).

Efficiency enhancement of organic based Light Emitting Diodes using a scattering layer

Abstract:This paper presents an investigation of organic LED extraction efficiency enhancement using a low refractive index scattering layer. A scattering model is developed based on rigorous electromagnetic modelling techniques. The model accounts for proportions of scattered guided and radiation modes as well as the efficiencies with which emitted and scattered light are extracted. Constrained optimisation techniques are implemeneted for a single operation wavelength to maximise the extraction efficiency of a generic OLED device. Calculations show that a 2 fold efficiency enhancement is achievable with a correctly engineered scattering layer. The detailed analysis of the enhancement mechanism highlights ways in which this scheme could be improved.

Measuring general relativistic dragging effects in the Earth's gravitational field with ELXIS: a proposal

Abstract:In a geocentric kinematically rotating ecliptical coordinate system in geodesic motion through the deformed spacetime of the Sun, both the longitude of the ascending node $\Omega$ and the inclination $I$ of an artificial satellite of the spinning Earth are affected by the post-Newtonian gravitoelectric De Sitter and gravitomagnetic Lense-Thirring effects. By choosing a circular orbit with $I = \Omega = 90°$ for a potential new spacecraft, which we propose to name ELXIS, it would be possible to measure each of the gravitomagnetic precessions separately at a percent level, or, perhaps, even better depending on the level of accuracy of the current and future global ocean tide models since the competing classical long-term perturbations on $I,~\Omega$ due to the even and odd zonal harmonics $J_\ell,~\ell=2,~3,~4,\ldots$ of the geopotential vanish. Moreover, a suitable linear combination of $I,~\Omega$ would be able to cancel out the solid and ocean tidal perturbations induced by the $K_1$ tide and, at the same time, enforce the geodetic precessions yielding a secular trend of $-8.3~\textrm{milliarcseconds~per~year}$, thus strengthening the goal of a $\simeq 10^{-5}$ test of the De Sitter effect recently proposed in the literature in the case of an equatorial coordinate system. Relatively mild departures $\Delta I = \Delta\Omega\simeq 0.01-0.1°$ from the ideal orbital configuration with $I = \Omega = 90°$ are allowed. [Abridged]

Abstract:In this paper we treat some aspects of the LARES 2 space experiment to test the general relativistic phenomenon of dragging of inertial frames, or frame-dragging, in particular we discuss some aspects of its relative accuracy which can approach one part in a thousand. We then, once again respond to the criticisms of the author of a recent paper about the accuracy in the measurement of frame-dragging with LARES 2. The claims of such a paper are not reproducible in any independent analyses. Indeed, it claims that the accuracy in the test of frame-dragging, which can be reached by the LARES 2 space experiment, is several orders of magnitude larger than previously estimated in a number of papers. Here we show that such a paper is based on a number of significant misunderstandings and conceptual mistakes. Furthermore, it is puzzling to observe that previous papers by the same author contained completely opposite statements about the accuracy which can be reached using two satellites with supplementary inclinations, such as in the LARES 2 space experiment, and in general with laser-ranged satellites.

The Lense-Thirring effect on the Galilean moons of Jupiter

Abstract:The perspectives of detecting the general relativistic gravitomagnetic Lense-Thirring effect on the orbits of the Galilean moons of Jupiter induced by the angular momentum ${\boldsymbol{S}}$ of the latter are preliminarily investigated. Numerical integrations over one century show that the expected gravitomagnetic signatures of the directly observable right ascension $\alpha$ and declination $\delta$ of the satellites are as large as tens of arcseconds for Io, while for Callisto they drop to the $\simeq 0.2\,\mathrm{arcseconds}$ level. Major competing effects due to the mismodeling in the zonal multipoles $J_\ell,\,\ell=2,\,3,\,4,\,\ldots$ of the Jovian non-spherically symmetric gravity field and in the Jupiter's spin axis ${\boldsymbol{\hat{k}}}$ should have a limited impact, especially in view of the future improvements in determining such parameters expected after the completion of the ongoing Juno mission in the next few years. On the other hand, the masses of the satellites, responsible of their mutual $N-$body perturbations, should be known better than now. Such a task should be accomplished with the future JUICE and Clipper missions to the Jovian system. Present-day accuracy in knowing the orbits of the Jovian Galilean satellites is of the order of 10 milliarcseconds, to be likely further improved thanks to the ongoing re-reduction of old photographic plates. This suggests that, in the next future, the Lense-Thirring effect in the main Jovian system of moons might be detectable with dedicated data reductions in which the gravitomagnetic field is explicitly modeled and solved-for.

The impact of tidal errors on the determination of the Lense-Thirring effect from satellite laser ranging

Abstract:The general relativistic Lense-Thirring effect can be detected by means of a suitable combination of orbital residuals of the laser-ranged LAGEOS and LAGEOS II satellites. While this observable is not affected by the orbital perturbation induced by the zonal Earth solid and ocean tides, it is sensitive to those generated by the tesseral and sectorial tides. The assessment of their influence on the measurement of the parameter mu, with which the gravitomagnetic effect is accounted for, is the goal of this paper. After simulating the combined residual curve by calculating accurately the mismodeling of the more effective tidal perturbations, it has been found that, while the solid tides affect the recovery of mu at a level always well below 1%, for the ocean tides and the other long-period signals Delta mu depends strongly on the observational period and the noise level: Delta mu(tides) amounts to almost 2% after 7 years. The aliasing effect of K1 l=3 p=1 tide and SRP(4241) solar radiation pressure harmonic, with periods longer than 4 years, on the perigee of LAGEOS II yield to a maximum systematic uncertainty on $\m_{LT}$ of less than 4% over different observational periods. The zonal 18.6-year tide does not affect the combined residuals.

Abstract:The effects of Horava-Lifshitz corrections to the gravito-magnetic field are analyzed. Solutions in the weak field, slow motion limit, referring to the motion of a satellite around the Earth are considered. The post-newtonian paradigm is used to evaluate constraints on the Horava-Lifshitz parameter space from current satellite and terrestrial experiments data. In particular, we focus on GRAVITY PROBE B, LAGEOS and the more recent LARES mission, as well as a forthcoming terrestrial project, GINGER.

Abstract:In the context of the currently ongoing efforts to improve the accuracy and reliability of the measurement of the Lense-Thirring effect in the gravitational field of the Earth it has recently been proposed to use the data from the existing spacecraft endowed with some active mechanisms of compensation of the non-gravitational accelerations like GRACE. In this paper we critically discuss this interesting possibility. Unfortunately, it turns out to be unpracticable because of the impact of the uncancelled even zonal harmonic coefficients of the multipolar expansion of the terrestrial gravitational potential and of some time-dependent tidal perturbations which would resemble as superimposed linear trends over the necessarily limited observational time span of the analysis.

Abstract:Only a few sites on Earth are technically equipped to carry out Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) to retroreflector arrays on the surface of the Moon. Despite the weak signal, they have successfully provided LLR range data for about 49 years, generating about 26,000 normal points. Recent system upgrades and new observatories have made millimeter-level range accuracy achievable. Based on appropriate modeling and sophisticated data analysis, LLR is able to determine many parameters associated with Earth–Moon dynamics, involving the lunar ephemeris, lunar physics, the Moon's interior, reference frames and Earth orientation parameters. LLR has also become one of the strongest tools for testing Einstein's theory of general relativity in the solar system. By extending the standard solution, it is possible to solve for parameters related to gravitational physics, like the temporal variation of the gravitational constant, metric parameters as well as the strong equivalence principle, preferred-frame effects and standard-model extensions. This paper provides a review about LLR measurement and analysis. After a short historical overview, we describe the key findings of LLR, the apparatus and technologies involved, the requisite modeling techniques, some recent results and future prospects on all fronts. We expect continued improvements in LLR, maintaining its lead in contributing to science.

Gravitomagnetic corrections on gravitational waves

Abstract:Gravitational waveforms and production could be considerably affected by gravitomagnetic corrections considered in relativistic theory of orbits. Beside the standard periastron effect of General Relativity, new nutation effects come out when c^{-3} corrections are taken into account. Such corrections emerge as soon as matter-current densities and vector gravitational potentials cannot be discarded into dynamics. We study the gravitational waves emitted through the capture, in the gravitational field of massive binary systems (e.g. a very massive black hole on which a stellar object is inspiralling) via the quadrupole approximation, considering precession and nutation effects. We present a numerical study to obtain the gravitational wave luminosity, the total energy output and the gravitational radiation amplitude. From a crude estimate of the expected number of events towards peculiar targets (e.g. globular clusters) and in particular, the rate of events per year for dense stellar clusters at the Galactic Center (SgrA*), we conclude that this type of capture could give signatures to be revealed by interferometric GW antennas, in particular by the forthcoming laser interferometer space antenna LISA.

Abstract:Ring lasers are inertial sensors for angular velocity based on the Sagnac effect. In recent years they have reached a very high sensitivity and accuracy; the best performing one, the ring Laser G in Wettzell (Germany), a square ring with 16 m perimeter, has reached a sensitivity of 12prad/s very close to the shot noise limit inferred from ring-down time measurements. On this basis it is expected that an array of six square ring lasers of 36 m perimeter, can perform a 1% accuracy test for the measurement of the Lense-Thirring frame dragging after 2 years of integration time. Essential for this measurement is the comparison between the Earth angular velocity and orientation in space measured with the ring array and compared to the measurement series maintained by the International Earth Rotation and Reference System Service (IERS), which measures Earth Rotation and pole position with respect to remote quasars. It has been shown that the accuracy of G in Wettzell is limited by the low frequency motion of the near surface laboratory, which is of the order of several prad/s, roughly 100 times larger than the Lense-Thirring contribution. For this reason the entire experiment should be placed in a quite underground laboratory, where these perturbations are reduced. The feasibility to properly place such a device inside the GranSasso INFN National Laboratory has been investigated.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to create a new type of gravimeter that can function effectively in the challenging conditions of space, specifically on the surfaces of planets and moons. The proposed device, called a diamagnetically stabilized magnetically levitated gravimeter (DSMLG), uses magnetic forces to balance a test mass against the force of gravity, allowing for accurate measurements. A diamagnetically stabilized levitation structure comprises a floating magnet, diamagnetic material, and a lifting magnet. The floating magnet levitates between two diamagnetic plates without the need for external energy input due to the interaction between the magnetic forces of the floating magnet and the stabilizing force of the diamagnetic material. This structure allows for stable levitation of the floating magnet without requiring additional energy. The goal is to design a gravimeter that is lightweight, requires minimal power, can withstand extreme temperatures and shocks, and has a low data rate. The authors envision this gravimeter being used on various robotic spacecraft, such as landers and rovers, to study the interiors of rocky and icy celestial bodies. This paper reports on the results of a finite element model analysis of the DSMLG and the strength of the resulting diamagnetic spring. The findings contribute to the understanding of the levitation characteristics of diamagnetically stabilized structures and provide valuable insights for their practical applications, including in the development of the proposed DSMLG.

Abstract:Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) measurements are crucial for advanced exploration of the evolutionary history of the lunar orbit, the laws of fundamental gravitational physics, selenophysics and geophysics as well as for future human missions to the Moon. Current LLR technique measures distance to the Moon with a precision approaching one millimeter that strongly demands further significant improvement of the theoretical model of the orbital and rotational dynamics of the Earth-Moon system. This model should inevitably be based on the theory of general relativity, fully incorporate the relevant geophysical/selenophysical processes and rely upon the most recent IAU standards in order to give us the opportunity to perform the most precise fundamental test of general relativity in the solar system in robust and physically-adequate way. The talk discusses new methods and approaches in developing such a mathematical model.
