Abstract:Quantum gravitational effects become significant at a cutoff that can be much lower than the Planck scale whenever there is a large number of light fields. This is expected to occur at any perturbative limit of an effective field theory coupled to gravity, or equivalently, at infinite distance in the field space of the UV completion. In this note, we present a universal pattern that links the asymptotic variation in field space of the quantum gravity cutoff Λsp and the characteristic mass of the lightest tower of states m : (∇→m/m)·(∇→Λsp/Λsp)=[1/(d−2)] , with d the spacetime dimension. This restriction can be used to make more precise several Swampland criteria that constrain any effective field theory which can be consistently coupled to quantum gravity. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.181601 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the universal patterns of quantum gravity at infinity. The authors focus on the phenomenon where the energy scale at which quantum gravity effects become significant can be much lower than the Planck scale when there are a large number of light fields. Specifically, they propose a universal pattern in the paper that describes the relationship between the asymptotic rate of change of the quantum gravity cutoff scale \(\Lambda_{\text{sp}}\) in field space and the asymptotic rate of change of the mass \(m\) of the lightest tower of states. They find that there is an exact relationship between the rates of change of these two quantities: \[ \left( \vec{\nabla} \frac{m}{m} \right) \cdot \left( \vec{\nabla} \frac{\Lambda_{\text{sp}}}{\Lambda_{\text{sp}}} \right) = \frac{1}{d-2}/C138 \] where \(d\) is the spacetime dimension. This relationship can be used to more precisely constrain any effective field theory (EFT) that can consistently couple to quantum gravity. Additionally, the paper discusses how this pattern relates to the Swampland criteria and proposes several conditions to ensure the general applicability of this pattern. These conditions involve requirements on the exponential decay rates of different towers, the existence of bound states when multiple towers become light simultaneously, and the requirement that at least one direction corresponds to the appearance of a string theory limit or an internal periodic uniform solution. In summary, the main purpose of this paper is to propose a new, precise mathematical relationship to describe the connection between the energy scale at which quantum gravity effects start to become important and the mass of the lightest tower of states. It also explores the implications of this relationship for the applicability and limitations of effective field theories in the context of quantum gravity.
