Abstract:In this study, a body-centered cubic lattice structure is reinforced by horizontal and vertical struts. Various lattice structures with different porosity gradient spans made of Ti-6Al-4V alloy powder are created by selective laser melting. Graded lattice structures are compared with equivalent uniform structures by conducting quasi-static compression experiments. The effects of lattice structures and gradients on specimen compression performance are investigated by analyzing dimensional accuracy, surface morphology, deformation behavior, and energy absorption capacity. The results show that the strength of lattice structures reinforced by vertical struts is stronger than those of lattice structures reinforced by horizontal struts. Whatever the type of lattice structure, the plateau stress increases and the initial failure stress decreases as the gradient span increases. Unlike prior studies, the material is not strictly deformed by layer-by-layer fracture, but is dominantly deformed by layer-by-layer fracture, mixed with local diagonal shear failure. Furthermore, the optimal onset densification strain is determined using two different approaches, and the energy variations in different graded lattice structures are investigated by energy normalization. The energy absorption capacity increases as the gradient span increases, and the energy absorption rate varies most noticeably when the gradient span increases from 10 to 20%.
