Abstract:π‐Electronic molecules with a BN‐heterocyclic and carbon‐based aromatic hybrid ring system (h‐CBN) are interesting in that they potentially exhibit synergistic properties arising from the two different π‐systems. Here we report the synthesis and properties of a h‐CBN‐type molecule (1) having a bicyclic B4N4‐heteropentalene core fused with extended aromatic rings. This molecule exhibits excellent chemical stability despite the absence of bulky substituents for kinetic protection, which in turn provides effective stacking of the π‐system upon crystallization. Depending on the crystallization solvent, 1 forms two polymorphs, i.e., the α‐ and β‐phases. While both phases have one‐dimensional columnar structures, the π‐stacking geometries associated with the transfer integrals of the frontier orbitals are different, resulting in a twofold difference in the electrical conducting properties. We also found that upon thermal vacuum deposition, 1 gives an amorphous film, which serves as a host material for a red phosphorescent OLED device (maximum external quantum efficiency: 15.5 and 13.3% at 0.1 and 2.5 mA, respectively).

Abstract:Biphenyl, as the elementary unit of organic functional materials, has been widely used in electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, over decades little has been fundamentally understood regarding how the intramolecular conformation of biphenyl dynamically affects its transport properties at the single-molecule level. Here, we establish the stereoelectronic effect of biphenyl on its electrical conductance based on the platform of graphene-molecule single-molecule junctions, where a specifically designed hexaphenyl aromatic chain molecule is covalently sandwiched between nanogapped graphene point contacts to create stable single-molecule junctions. Both theoretical and temperature-dependent experimental results consistently demonstrate that phenyl twisting in the aromatic chain molecule produces different microstates with different degrees of conjugation, thus leading to stochastic switching between high- and low-conductance states. These investigations offer new molecular design insights into building functional single-molecule electrical devices.

Abstract:Boron/nitrogen-doped fluoranthenes, a new class of BN-doped cyclopenta-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, were synthesized via pyrrolic-type nitrogen directed C-H borylation. Regioselective bromination of BN-fluoranthene (3a) gave mono- and dibrominated BN-fluoranthenes. The halogenated BN-fluoranthene (3b) can undergo various of further cross-coupling reactions to deliver a series of BN-fluoranthenes. Moreover, incorporating BN unit in to fluoranthene resulted in a wider HOMO-LUMO energy gaps. The aromaticities of the BN-fluoranthene (3a) were quantified by experimental and computational studies.

Single-Molecule Conductance Through an Isoelectronic B-N Substituted Phenanthrene Junction.

Abstract:Single-molecule conductance of a B-N substituted phenanthrene derivative and its isoelectronic C═C counterpart was investigated by the scanning tunneling microscopy break junction (STM-BJ) technique. The incorporation of the B-N motif results in a better single-molecule conductivity than the C═C analogue. Furthermore, the Lewis acid-base reaction between F- and the B atom of the B-N motif leads to a decrease of the conductance of the BN derivative, which can be understood due to the shifting of the energy positions of the LUMO, as revealed by quantum transport calculations, even though the HOMO-LUMO gap decreases in the B-F Lewis acid-base. These findings provide insights for modulating electron transport properties by isoelectronic structure design. The B-N isoelectronic substituted structure could be a feasible way to design single-molecule devices such as switches and chemical sensors.

Abstract:New BN-embedded, thiophene-fused, polycyclic aromatic compounds with planar geometry were designed and synthesized. The molecules showed excellent stability and chemical robustness. Postfunctionalization on this skeleton was demonstrated with a series of electrophilic bromination, palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling, and Knoevenagel condensation reactions. The π skeleton remained intact during these late-stage transformations. The optical and electronic properties have been well tuned through incorporation of electron-rich and -deficient groups on the backbone. This work shows the great advantage of the postfunctionalization strategy on BN-containing polycyclic aromatic compounds for fast diversification and materials screening.

Abstract:1,5-diaminonaphthalene (DAN) and bipyridinium (BIPY2+) were copolymerized into NP1 and NP2 linked by acylhydrazone bonds. The formed intramolecular charge-transfer (CT) complex drove the linear foldamers to adopt pleated folding conformation. Upon protonation of the DAN units by triflic acid (TFSA), the pleated folding conformation unfolded to linear structure because of electron repulsion. And this linear structure can be refolded to pleated structure by titrating with triethylamine (TEA). 1,5-dinaphtho[38]crown-10 (DN38C10) can encapsulate bipyridinium group on the polymers after protonation. These processes were supported by UV–vis and fluorescence spectroscopy studies.

Abstract:Three zigzag BNBNB-embedded anthracene-fused fluoranthenes are synthesized from 1,3,2-benzodiazaboroles through an indole-type N-directed C-H borylation reaction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses confirm the double bond character of all four alternating B-N bonds and reveal the five-center four-π-electron nature of the BNBNB group. Experimental spectra and density functional theory calculations indicate that borylation remarkably enhances the planarity, extends π-conjugation, and leads to a bathochromic shift in the absorption and emission bands, with remarkable fluorescence quantum yields in solution (92%).

Abstract:Incorporating heteroatoms can effectively modulate the molecular optoelectronic properties. However, the fundamental understanding of BN doping effects in BN‐embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is underexplored, lacking rational guidelines to modulate the electronic structures through BN units for advanced materials. Herein, a concise synthesis of novel B2N2‐perylenes with BN doped at the bay area is achieved to systematically explore the doping effect of BN position on the photophysical properties of PAHs. The shift of BN position in B2N2‐perylenes alters the π electron conjugation, aromaticity and molecular rigidness significantly, achieving substantially higher electron transition abilities than those with BN doped in the nodal plane. It is further clarified that BN position dominates the photophysical properties over BN orientation. The revealed guideline here may apply generally to novel BN‐PAHs, and aid the advancement of BN‐PAHs with highly‐emissive performance.

Abstract:Three novel BN-embedded V-shaped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with different π-conjugation lengths were designed and successfully synthesized. Their single-crystal structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis, and it is found that the molecular stacking structure can be effectively tuned by extending the length of π conjugation. Meanwhile, owing to the unique V-shaped molecular geometry, they exhibit moderate host-guest supramolecular interactions with both fullerenes C60 and C70.

Abstract:A biphenylene network, the first synthesized non-graphene planar carbon allotrope composed entirely of sp(2)-hybridized carbon atoms, has attracted widespread interest due to its unique structure, and electronic and mechanical properties. A pristine biphenylene network is metallic, and the effective regulation of its electronic properties will greatly expand its application in the fields of optoelectronics, nanoelectronic devices and photocatalysis. In this paper, the hydrogenation and halogenation of biphenylene networks were investigated using density functional theory, and their electronic properties were tuned by varying the functionalization concentration. Calculation results show that the maximum functionalization degree is CH1.00, CF1.00, CCl0.67 and CBr0.33, respectively. The band gap could be modulated in the range of 0.00-4.86 eV by hydrogenation, 0.012-4.82 eV by fluorination, 0.090-3.44 eV by chlorination, and 0.017-1.73 eV by bromination. It is also found that CHx (x = 0.92, 1.00), CFx (x = 0.75, 1.00), and CClx (x = 0.42-0.67) have the potential to photolyse water. Our research indicates that hydrogenation and halogenation can effectively regulate the electronic properties of the biphenylene network by controlling the concentration of functionalization, thus expanding its potential applications in the field of electronic devices and photocatalysis.

Abstract:AbstractActiniae‐like carbon nitride (ACN) bundles were synthesized by the pyrolysis of an asymmetric supramolecular precursor prepared from L‐arginine (L‐Arg) and melamine. ACN has adjustable band gaps (2.25 eV–2.75 eV) and hollow microtubes with ultrathin pore walls, which enrich reaction sites, improve visible‐light absorption and enhance charge separation. In the presence of phenylcarbinol, ACN exhibited excellent water‐splitting ability (95.3 μmol h−1) and in the meanwhile phenylcarbinol was selectively oxidized to benzaldehyde (conversion of 90.9 %, selectivity of 99.7 %) under solar irradiation. For the concurrent reactions, 2D isotope labeling, separation, and detection were conducted to confirm that the proton source of released hydrogen is water. The mechanism of water splitting and phenylcarbinol oxidation was also investigated.
B2n2-Embedded Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons With Furan And Thiophene Derivatives Functionalized In Crossed Directions

Abstract:A series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), consisting of two pairs of BN units, have been designed and their synthesis has been achieved by electrophilic C-H borylation. Two conjugation extension directions can be found in these B2N2-embedded PAHs. The B2N2-containing backbone with shorter effective conjugation length is isoelectronic with diaryl-fused anthracene, whereas the second derivative, with longer effective conjugation length, is isoelectronic with bis(trans-arylvinyl)benzene. By incorporating different aryl groups, i.e., furyl, thienyl, benzo[b]furyl, and benzo[b]thienyl groups, into the two crossed directions of the B2N2-embedded PAHs, their electronic and optical properties have been comparatively investigated by photophysical, electrochemical, and theoretical approaches. It is found that both the substituents and their conjugation extension directions have significant effects on the aromatic and photophysical properties of the B2N2-embedded PAHs. The conjugation extension in the shorter backbone is more pronounced on the effective conjugation length than the longer backbone. Moreover, all the B2N2-embedded PAHs behave as both Lewis acids and Lewis bases, and reversible photoluminescence switching can be observed by simply neutralizing the added Lewis acid or Lewis base.
BN‐Embedded Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Oligomers: Synthesis, Aromaticity, and Reactivity

Abstract:BN-embedded oligomers with different pairs of BN units were synthesized by electrophilic borylation. Up to four pairs of BN units were incorporated in the large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Their geometric, photophysical, electrochemical, and Lewis acidic properties were investigated by X-ray crystallography, optical spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The B-N bonds show delocalized double-bond characteristics and the conjugation can be extended through the trans-orientated aromatic azaborine units. Calculations reveal the relatively lower aromaticity for the inner azaborine rings in the BN-embedded PAH oligomers. The frontier orbitals of the longer oligomers are delocalized over the inner aromatic rings. Consequently, the inner moieties of the BN-embedded PAH oligomers are more active than the outer parts. This is confirmed by a simple oxidation reaction, which has significant effects on the aromaticity and the intramolecular charge-transfer interactions.

Abstract:The construction of heterogeneous frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) with performance comparable to or surpassing the homogeneous counterparts in H2 activation is a long-standing challenge. Herein, sterically hindered Lewis acid ("B" center) and Lewis base ("N" center) sites were anchored within the rigid lattice of highly crystalline hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) scaffolds. The active sites were created via precision defect regulation during the molten-salt-involved (NaNH2 and NaBH4) h-BN construction procedure. The as-afforded h-BN scaffolds achieved highly efficient H2/D2 activation and dissociation under ambient pressure via FLP-like behavior, and attractive catalytic efficiency in hydrogenation reactions surpassing the current heterogeneous analogues.

Abstract:Hybrid molecules of π-conjugated carbon rings and BN-heterocyclic rings (h-CBNs) fused with each other have been a rare class of compounds due to the limited availability of their synthetic methods. Here we report the synthesis of new h-CBNs featuring a B4 N4 -heteropentalene core and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon wings. Using 1,2-azaborinine derivatives as a building block, we developed a rational synthetic protocol that allows the formation of a B4 N4 ring in a stepwise manner, resulting in the fully fused ABA-type triblock molecules. Thus, three derivatives of 1 bearing naphthalene (1Naph ), anthracene (1Anth ), or phenanthrene (1Phen ) wings fused with the B4 N4 core were synthesized and characterized. Among them, 1Phen , which displays the highest triplet-state energy, was found to serve a host material for phosphorescent OLED devices, for which a maximum external quantum efficiency of 13.7 % was recorded. These findings may promote the synthesis of various types of h-CBNs aiming at new properties arising from the synergy of two different π-electronic systems.
Structural and electronic properties of c-BN (111) surface with hydrogen/fluorine functionalization and nitrogen-based small-molecule adsorption

Abstract:Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we systematically investigate the structural and electrical properties of pure, hydrogen (H) and fluorine (F) functionalized polar (111) cubic boron nitride (c-BN) surface. In the absence of surface functionalization, the reconstructed B-terminated surface is energetically preferable. The hydrogenation is favorable for stabilizing N- and B-terminated surfaces, while the fluorination leads to the stable unreconstructed B-terminated structure due to strong site preference of F atoms. The reconstructed c-BN surface has magnetic characteristic, and the spin density distributions are mainly localized around the interlayer weak B-B bonds. The unreconstructed structures are nonmagnetic. Meantime, the adsorption behavior of nitric oxide (NO) and ammonia (NH3) molecules are investigated on the reconstructed c-BN surface. It is found that the adsorption of NO has a considerable effect on the energy levels near the Fermi level, while the energy levels of NH3 are located at the deep energy level below the Fermi level. Our theoretical results are helpful for understanding experimental phenomenon in practical applications and designing novel c-BN based molecule sensors.
Graphene-analogue H-Bn Coupled Bi-rich Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 Layered Microspheres for Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activity and Mechanism Insight

Abstract:The novel boron nitride coupled Bi-rich Bi4O5Br2 layered microspheres (h-BN/Bi4O5Br2-LMs) were successfully synthesized via a facile ionic liquid-in-water (IL/W) microemulsion-mediated route. The physical, chemical and optical properties of these heterojunction photocatalysts were thoroughly characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS). Their photocatalytic activities were primarily evaluated by degradation of 4-tert-butylphenol (PTBP), which found 1.0 wt% h-BN/Bi4O5Br2-LMs to be the best one. The photocurrent experiments showed that the photocurrent density of 1.0 wt% h-BN/Bi4O5Br2-LMs was four times higher than that of pure Bi4O5Br2-LMs due to enhanced charge transfer ability of the former. It revealed that the addition of h-BN was in favor of suppressing the photoinduced electron-hole pair recombination of Bi4O5Br2-LMs, so as to improve the photocatalytic activity of the composite. center dot O-2- and were proved to be the main reactive species in the photocatalytic process by scavenger experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra. In addition, the photocatalytic mechanism of h-BN/Bi4O5Br2-LMs was further elaborated in this work. The probable degradation products were identified by GC-MS. The proposed conjugated addition and oxidation reactions were described to be the main pathways by combining the frontier electron density calculation and GC-MS results. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V.
