Abstract:Conserving caves is a challenge even in protected areas. Caves are essential for bats, which are essential for caves and the Carajás region stands out for its high richness of chiropterofauna, the presence of large populations and endangered species in its caves. Considering the uniqueness of subterraneans habitats, we recommend the implementation of research plans that include long‐term monitoring and ecological studies, the regulation of tourist activities and a careful review of mining expansion that directly impacts caves and their associated fauna. The Carajás region is home to the largest number of iron caves in Brazil, but studies that integrate elements of biological diversity and landscape characteristics are scarce. We present the first study based on the bat cave vulnerability index (BCVI), which uses bats as a key species for prioritizing caves in South America, whose objective was to assess the biotic potential and vulnerability of caves in the Carajás region, determining priority sites and the most effective conservation actions. The study took place from August 2021 to March 2023, where an inventory of the chiropterofauna of 12 caves was carried out. We recorded 16 bat species, two of which are vulnerable to extinction – Furipterus horrens (Cuvier, 1828) and Natalus macrourus (Gervais, 1856) – and two endemics to the Amazon region – Hsunycteris aff. thomasi (Allen, 1904) and Phyllostomus latifolius (Thomas, 1901); as well as one species with insufficient data to delimit its endemicity or threat status (Lonchophyllinae sp.). Mining is the main anthropogenic activity in the region, but tourism is also present and acts as a potential source of disturbance to the caves. The BCVI revealed three high priority caves for conservation and four with medium priority, indicating that these habitats are vulnerable to species loss and population decline due to exposure to anthropogenic activities and habitat destruction, thus requiring more effective conservation strategies. Considering the uniqueness of the subterranean habitats, we recommend re‐evaluating the proposals for expanding mining activities, implementing controlled tourist visitation plans and conducting ecological studies and long‐term monitoring. Resumen La región de Carajás alberga el mayor número de cuevas de hierro de Brasil, pero los estudios que integran elementos de diversidad biológica y características del paisaje son escasos. Presentamos el primer estudio basado en el bat cave vulnerability index (BCVI), que utiliza murciélagos como especie clave para priorizar cuevas en Sudamérica, cuyo objetivo fue evaluar el potencial biótico y la vulnerabilidad de las cuevas de la región de Carajás, determinando los sitios prioritarios y las acciones de conservación más eficaces. El estudio se llevó a cabo entre agosto de 2021 y marzo de 2023, donde se realizó un inventario de la quiropterofauna de 12 cuevas. Se registraron 16 especies de murciélagos, dos de ellas vulnerables a la extinción – Furipterus horrens (Cuvier, 1828) y Natalus macrourus (Gervais, 1856) – y dos endémicas de la región amazónica – Hsunycteris aff. thomasi (Allen, 1904) y Phyllostomus latifolius (Thomas, 1901); así como una especie con datos insuficientes para delimitar su endemicidad o estado de amenaza (Lonchophyllinae sp.). La minería es la principal actividad antropogénica de la región, pero el turismo también está presente y actúa como posible fuente de perturbación de las cuevas. El BCVI reveló tres cuevas de alta prioridad para la conservación y cuatro de prioridad media, lo que indica que estos hábitats son vulnerables a la pérdida de especies y al declive de la población debido a la exposición a actividades antropogénicas y a la destrucción del hábitat, por lo que requieren estrategias de conservación más eficaces. Teniendo en cuenta la singularidad de los hábitats subterráneos, recomendamos reevaluar las propuestas de ampliación de las actividades mineras, aplicar planes de visitas turísticas controladas y realizar estudios ecológicos y seguimientos a largo plazo.
