Abstract:
The consumption of rechargeable batteries has been increasing rapidly. High demand on specific metals for battery manufacturing and environmental impacts from battery disposal make it essential to recycle and retrieve materials from the spent batteries. There have been some review articles on battery recycling, mostly on the technologies for the materials recovery and some on life cycle assessment (LCA). To develop a truly sustainable battery industry, however, battery recycling must be commercially viable. Yet, very limited information on the economics of battery recycling is available. This paper examines technologies and research efforts in battery recycling from the perspective of economic viability and life cycle inventory. With the support of up-to-date statistics, the paper also comments on the challenges facing battery recycling, and the role of battery design and circular economy in the sustainable development of battery industry where governments, manufacturers and consumers all play a part.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Papers Try to Solve #### 1. **Bio.B - Gen: An Initial System Generator for Biological Molecular Simulations** - **Problem**: Currently, there is a lack of convenient and general - purpose initial system generation tools for biomolecular simulations. This may lead researchers to choose the simulation type based on the available initial systems rather than the system that is most suitable for a specific problem. - **Solution**: A general - purpose software tool named `bio.b - gen` has been developed to create initial systems for biomolecular simulations. This tool supports atomic force fields and the coarse - grained MARTINI force field and generates initial systems suitable for the GROMACS simulation package. #### 2. **Validation and Development of the Force Field Parameters for Drug and Drug - Like Molecules** - **Problem**: The force field parameters of most drug and drug - like ligand molecules have not been fully validated, which may affect the success rate of drug design. - **Solution**: An automated force field topology generator (ATB) has been developed. It combines quantum mechanics calculations and knowledge - base methods to generate force field parameters that are compatible with biomolecular force fields. In addition, a fully automated force field parameter validation has been carried out, and participation in the SAMPL4 community challenge to predict the hydration free energy of drug - like molecules has also been involved. #### 3. **A Novel Method for Force - Field Calibration Based on Maximum - Likelihood Approach and Thermal Unfolding Data** - **Problem**: Existing protein force field calibration methods usually only use the structures of folded proteins, resulting in poor performance of the force fields in distinguishing between folded and misfolded structures. - **Solution**: A new method based on the maximum - likelihood principle has been proposed. Force field calibration is carried out using sets of structures determined by NMR at different temperatures. This method iteratively optimizes the force field parameters to make the simulation results closer to the experimental data. #### 4. **Quantum Mechanical Molecular Mechanical Calculations using AMOEBA Force Fields** - **Problem**: In QM/MM calculations, the influence of the MM polarization effect of water molecules (MM - induced dipoles caused by QM electron density) on the calculation results needs further study. - **Solution**: QM/MM calculations using the AMOEBA force field have been implemented, and the performance of three AMOEBA parameter sets (AMOEBA03, iAMOEBA, and AMOEBA14) has been compared with that of TIP3P and other water models in QM/MM calculations. #### 5. **The Do’s and Do Not’s of a 100 Million Atom Molecular Dynamics Simulation** - **Problem**: Large - scale molecular dynamics simulations (such as 100 - million - atom systems) require substantial modifications to existing computational tools to adapt to such large - scale systems. - **Solution**: Using innovative techniques based on VMD, NAMD, MDFF and Python, new semi - automated, high - throughput large - scale atomic model construction methods have been developed, including solvation, ionization and equilibration processes in disordered membrane environments. In addition, tools for characterizing the physical properties of 100 - million - atom systems, such as long - range electrostatic interactions, have also been discussed. #### 6. **Minimally - Biased Metadynamics Method to Sample Conformational Ensembles Compatible with Experimental Measurements**
