Developing Junior High School Students' English Writing Skills Through Reading and Creating English Picture Books: An Experimental Study

Abstract:Good English writing skills play a very important role in students' academic and future career development, but this has been the shortcoming of Chinese junior high school students. To improve this situation, we conducted a 10-week comparative experiment of creating English picture book in two classes of Year 7 students in Hangzhou L Middle School. The experiment found that the English picture book reading and creating practice was well accepted by students in the experimental classes, especially the peer assessment and selection of the outstanding picture books created, which stimulated students' interest and sense of achievement in English writing, promoted the development of the sense of creative thinking (i.e., composing story ability) and teamwork, and improved their English writing scores by 72%; whereas the control class, which maintained the original learning model, improved by only 1.4%. The experiment provides a reference and a model for English teaching reform in Chinese secondary schools.
