Abstract:A survey of 538 students in 6 primary and secondary schools and colleges in Hangzhou, Ningbo and Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, China has found: (1) Chinese schools suspended offline teaching in February-May, 2020 due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. All students studied online at home and 93% of them studied 2-7 hours a day online on average. Among all of them, students in primary schools spent least time online and college students spent most time. The science courses in middle school accounted for 46% of total studied courses, English accounted for 17%, and university major courses accounted for 21%. Furthermore, students spent 1-7 hours per day on watching TV and playing video games, and 1-4 hours on homework to review lessons. (2) After the end of the epidemic in China, more than 51% of students are still studying online for 1-4 hours a day, the epidemic situation has made online teaching in China popularized 10-20 years in advance, and students' online learning has become normal. (3) 32% of students like to study online, and they think that online class has the following advantages: numerous high-quality courseware that can be learned at any time anywhere, easy to communicate, save the time to go and from school, high learning efficiency, and online tutoring class charges are cheaper than offline ones. (4) The proportion of students who feel neutral and dislike the online study account for 56% and 9% respectively; they think online learning has the following problems: the online courses provided by schools are boring but they were forced to learn, and also have to clock in, which cannot bring the advantages of online education; the price of online tutoring course is very high; communication is not as easy as offline; the submission and correction of homework is more complicated than offline, and the learning effect is not good; students’ eyesight is decreased rapidly; online examination is not allowed. (5) 21% of parents are very supportive of online teaching, 62% of parents think it is acceptable, 17% of parents do not support or oppose, the reason for opposition is that their children do not have enough self-control, online learning effect is more difficult to ensure, eyesight loss is faster and so on. Therefore, the following countermeasures are put forward: (1) students are ought to be guided to pay attention to online learning; (2) to strengthen the reform of teaching methods, improve courseware quality, control teaching time, and leave students time for notes to ensure recess; (3) reduce video and broadcast courses, advocate live courses, strengthen the communication and interaction between teachers and students; (4) reform to simplify the online homework submission method, explore a reasonable online examination model; (5) strengthens the home-school cooperation, encourages the supervision function of parents, and strengthens the online teaching results. Abstract:This study explores the online education action for defeating COVID-19 in China from the perspectives of the system, mechanism and mode. In particular, the policy development of online education in China during the epidemic includes the education informatization policy, the online education system, and the online education mechanism in China. The online education and teaching mode during the epidemic involve the synchronous live class-based teaching mode, asynchronous recording and broadcasting teaching mode, online flipped classroom teaching mode, and online tutoring-based teaching mode. Both characteristics and trends of online education in China during the epidemic have been explored in this study. In addition, the problems, discussions and remarks are also offered.

Abstract:Due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in China, a large number of Chinese students resorted to online learning resources. The increasingly widespread online education enables the investigation of public opinion about this large-scale untraditional mode of learning during this critical period. Sina Weibo Microblogs (the Chinese equivalent of Twitter) related to online education were collected in three distinctive phases: from July 01, 2019 to January 09, 2020 (pre-pandemic); from January 10, 2020 to April 30, 2020 (amid-pandemic); and from May 01, 2020 to Nov 30, 2020 (post-pandemic), respectively. The aim was to obtain broad insight into how online learning was viewed by the public in the Chinese educational landscape. The public opinion during these three periods were analysed and compared. The findings facilitated a better understanding of what the Chinese public perceived about this online learning mode in becoming the dominant channel for teaching and learning during critical periods.

Abstract:With the development of educational technology modernization, online education is booming in recent years. E-learning is a method of content dissemination and fast learning through the application of information technology and Internet technology. With the rapid development of information technology, especially from the Internet to the mobile Internet, it has created a way of life, work and learning across time and space, which has changed the way of knowledge acquisition. Teaching and learning can be independent of time, space and location, and access to knowledge has become flexible and diversified. The rapid global spread of COVID-19 at the beginning of 2020 has affected about 190 countries around the world by suspending offline classes and affecting the educational progress of more than 1.5 billion students. Most schools in China try to provide courses through online education, which has a great impact on the traditional education model. Abstract:During the COVID-19 pandemic, social education has shifted from face to face to online in order to avoid large gatherings and crowds for blocking the transmission of the virus. To analyze the impact of virus on user experience and deeply retrieve users’ requirements, this paper constructs a reasonable evaluation index system through obtaining user reviews about seven major online education platforms before and after the outbreak of COVID-19, and by combining the emotional analysis, hot mining technology, as well as relevant literature. At the same time, the variation coefficient method is chosen to weigh each index based on the difference of index values. Furthermore, this paper adopts the comprehensive evaluation method to analyze user experience before and after the outbreak of COVID-19, and finally finds out the change of users’ concerns regarding the online education platform. In terms of access speed, reliability, timely transmission technology of video information, course management, communication and interaction, and learning and technical support, this paper explores the supporting abilities and response levels of online education platforms during COVID-19, and puts forward corresponding measures to improve how these platforms function.

Abstract:During attempts to prevent and control the COVID-19 pandemic in China, higher education programs shifted their traditional educational models to online models. This paper aimed to explore how Chinese universities organized online teaching and learning during the pandemic. It investigated the factors affecting the implementation of online teaching and provided policy recommendations for improving the quality of education in the post-pandemic period. The primary data for this study came from in-depth interviews with nine students and five teaching and administrative staff at eight major universities in mainland China. Literature was obtained in both English and Chinese from January 2020 to September 2021. Peer-reviewed journals, policy reports, and university documents regarding online education in Chinese universities were reviewed, and their challenges and countermeasures were investigated. The paper found that the implementation of online education was affected by various sources, including technologies, teachers’ teaching skills, network information literacy, and students’ learning motivations and self-directed learning skills. Based on the insiders’ views, the paper suggested that to promote the quality of online education in the post-COVID-19 pandemic, higher education institutes and programs could develop their infrastructure construction, improve teachers’ quality of teaching, and focus on students’ learning motivations.

Abstract:The outbreak of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in various countries at the end of last year has transferred traditional face-to-face teaching to online education platforms, which directly affects the quality of education. Taking user satisfaction on online education platforms in China as the research object, this paper uses a questionnaire survey and web crawler to collect experience data of online and offline users, constructs a customer satisfaction index system by analyzing emotion and the existing literature for quantitative analysis, and builds aback propagation (BP) neural network model to forecast user satisfaction. The conclusion shows that users’ personal factors have no direct influence on user satisfaction, while platform availability has the greatest influence on user satisfaction. Finally, suggestions on improving the online education platform are given to escalate the level of online education during the COVID-19 pandemic, so as to promote the reform of information-based education.

The Interim Characteristics of Large-Scale Online Education at Chinese Institutions of Higher Education—An Empirical Study Based on a Questionnaire Survey of Students, Instructors, and Administrative Personnel

Abstract:In order to fully comprehend the state of online education at institutions of higher education in China during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the Online Education Task Group of the Center for Teaching and Learning Development at Xiamen University conducted a questionnaire survey of the state of online education, and a total of 334 institutions of higher education, 13,997 instructors, and 256,504 students participated in this survey. The results of the survey showed that large-scale online education in China met or even exceeded the expected goals for the first time, in a successful round of online educational practices, with important value as a reference for informatization construction at institutions of higher education in the post-pandemic era and the achievement of hybrid online-offline education. However, due to being "compelled" by the pandemic, this round of large-scale online education left behind many interim characteristics of this specific period of time in a number of areas, including the preparation of instructors and students for online education, support by education platforms, the technical services of education platforms, online services provided by schools, online education models and characteristics, outcomes in online education, the primary factors influencing outcomes in online education, existing problems in online education, the challenges faced by instructors and students in online education, and recommendations by instructors and students for improvements to online education. From a long-term perspective, these interim characteristics leave room for a series of reflections on subsequently continuing to deepen educational reforms. In the face of these interim characteristics having overtones of an "emergency response," from the perspective of informatization construction in education in the post-pandemic era, this article proposes five relationships that must be properly handled: the relationship between the resources allocated to online education by programs and by the market; the relationship between hard development and educational concepts; the relationship between equity and efficiency; the relationships between different agents' understandings and practices; and the relationship between domestic practices and international experiences.

Abstract:COVID-19 has challenged education systems globally. Traditional teaching and learning activities of more than 1,300 vocational colleges and nearly 11,000 vocational high schools in China have had to be paused and transformed into an online mode. A study had been conducted to trace the unprecedented change which would provide reflections on policies and practical experience worthy of reference for the follow-up development of online vocational education in China and other countries in the world. The study used two methods to collect data: (1) delivering questionnaires to 767 schools, 17009 teachers, 270,732 students, and (2) gathering 110 institute cases from 21 provinces and 170 curriculum cases from 14 provinces. The result showed that vocational institutions coped with the pandemic’s outbreak through online learning and achieved the overall goal of “Not Going to School but Classes still Ongoing.” Further, vocational institutions have faced problems and challenges of online learning in practice training and internship, organization, and technical environment. The development of vocational education in the information era requires thinking about the system-driven reform path and online learning strategy and putting it into action.

Abstract:The new crown pneumonia (COVID-19) epidemic in 2020 has spread globally, causing schools around the world to stop routine teaching. Educational institutions in various countries have adopted online teaching methods in response to this crisis. This research, carried out in Human Institute of Information Technology with a number of teachers and students as its subjects, sets out to give statistical analysis upon the students' selections of online teaching platforms as well as their evaluations of online teaching. At the same time, based on the online teaching practice of “Building Structure”, a certain quantity of research upon the online teaching practice is completed among the students who began their college studies in engineering cost in the year of 2018. According to all these studies, it is evident that multiple factors such as teachers' ages, professions, and the features of various online teaching platforms, can determine which one is used by different individuals. The evaluation results suggest that online teaching is necessary under the impact of the epidemic despite the fact that students may face a series of problems for lack of self-control and other possible reasons. Through practice, an innovative teaching and evaluation method can partially solve the problems found in online teaching and provide useful ideas for creating higher quality teaching on the Internet.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the implementation and challenges of China's national online education strategy – “Suspending Classes Without Stopping Learning” (SCWSL) – during the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of children and their parents. Altogether 28,334 children (aged 6-8 years) and their parents were randomly sampled from nine cities in five provinces of China, and a mixed-method design involving a questionnaire and interviews was used. The results indicated that: (1) most children had participated in online education characterized by wide-ranging content, teacher-led interaction, and rich learning platforms; (2) online education had an effect on children's physical and mental health; (3) parent pressure was at a medium to high level due to online education; and (4) parents perceived that offline education was more effective than online education, and this perception varied significantly between geographical regions, living areas, and school types. These findings reveal that the sudden implementation of nationwide online education created many challenges, and also provided practical implications for countries carrying out online education in the post-pandemic era.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: COVID-19 broke out in China at the end of 2019 and spread rapidly around the world. The World Health Organization designated COVID-19 as a global pandemic on March 11, 2020. China has adopted its own country-specific comprehensive prevention and control measures, and, as a result, the domestic COVID-19 epidemic became effectively controlled in China in mid-March 2020. During the COVID-19 epidemic, remarkable changes have taken place in China's domestic learning, living, and working methods, primarily in terms of the synergy between the Internet Plus (Internet+) strategy and the leadership of the Chinese government.

Abstract:Highlights We examined the results of a large-scale national survey of online secondary education in China. The online survey of 33,194 high school students and 5,667 teachers has provided comprehensive and representative data regarding the quality of online education and its implementation during the pandemic. Questionnaire surveys administered to students and teachers in different grades and comparative analysis of different cohorts revealed group heterogeneity of the online learning effect. The findings have elucidated the emergency teaching situation in China during the pandemic, yielding targeted suggestions for school education following the resumption of classes.

Abstract:Faced with the sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese K-12 schools pivoted to online teaching to "suspend classes without stopping learning" and to ensure continued learning in the first half of 2020. As an emergency measure to combat the pandemic, the implementation of online teaching met a range of challenges. This study randomly distributed approximately 420,000 questionnaires to primary and secondary students, teachers, and administrators across all provinces in China, with the aim of investigating online teaching during the pandemic from the perspectives of teaching organization, policy implementation, and learning experience, as well as comparing the ways urban and rural schools responded to COVID-19 from the perspective of balanced education development. Results show that schools across different regions in the country are equipped with essential facilities for online teaching, guaranteeing the successful rollout of online teaching. It is also found that schools need to enhance their capacity for contextualized decision making and innovation in teaching practice and that additional support should be given to rural schools to improve their access to resources and their online teaching experience. Significant differences between urban and rural schools are found to exist in such areas as students' learning interest and effectiveness, information technology literacy, and psychological well-being. Moreover, there also exists considerable discrepancy in teachers' digital teaching competence between urban and rural schools. We discuss the implications from the findings of this large-scale study and make suggestions for future directions of online teaching development in the digital age.
