Abstract:Neonicotinoids, as the fastest-growing class of insecticides, currently account for over 25% of the global pesticide market. Their effectiveness in controlling a wide range of pests that pose a threat to croplands, home yards/gardens, and golf course greens cannot be denied. However, the extensive use of neonicotinoids has resulted in significant declines in nontarget organisms such as pollinators, insects, and birds. Furthermore, the potential chronic, sublethal effects of these compounds on human health remain largely unknown. To address these pressing issues, it is crucial to explore and understand the capabilities of electrochemical sensors in detecting neonicotinoid residues. Surprisingly, despite the increasing importance of this topic, no comprehensive review article currently exists in the literature. Therefore, our proposed review aims to bridge this gap by providing a thorough analysis of the use of electrochemical methods for neonicotinoid determination. In this review article, we will delve into various aspects of electrochemical analysis, including the influence of electrode materials, employed techniques, and the different types of electrode mechanisms utilized. By synthesizing and analysing the existing research in this field, our review will offer valuable insights and guidance to researchers, scientists, and policymakers alike.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Pesticidal Activity of Emamectin Benzoate Nanoformulations Against Phenacoccus Solenopsis Tinsley (hemiptera: Pseudococcidae)

Abstract:Using nanotechnology to develop new formulations of pesticides is considered a possible option in enhancing the efficiency, safety, and photostability of pesticides under various climatic conditions. In the present study, two novel nanoformulations (NFs) were successfully prepared based on nano-delivery systems for emamectin benzoate (EMB) by loading it on cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SNPs) as carriers through a freeze-drying method. The synthesized nanoformulations were examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results showed that SNPs and CNCs had a loading efficiency of 43.31% and 15.04% (w/w) for EMB, respectively, and could effectively protect EMB from photolysis under UV radiation. The LC50 values for EMB + SNPs, EMB + CNCs, and EMB commercial formulation against Phenacoccus solenopsis were 0.01, 0.05, and 0.31 μg/mL, respectively, indicating that both NFs were more effective than the EMB commercial formulation. This work seeks to develop new nano-carriers for potential applications of pesticides in plant protection, which will reduce the recommended dose of pesticides and thereby decrease the amount of pesticide residue in food and the environment.

Abstract:Electrochemical sensors play a significant role in detecting chemical ions, molecules, and pathogens in water and other applications. These sensors are sensitive, portable, fast, inexpensive, and suitable for online and in-situ measurements compared to other methods. They can provide the detection for any compound that can undergo certain transformations within a potential window. It enables applications in multiple ion detection, mainly since these sensors are primarily non-specific. In this paper, we provide a survey of electrochemical sensors for the detection of water contaminants, i.e., pesticides, nitrate, nitrite, phosphorus, water hardeners, disinfectant, and other emergent contaminants (phenol, estrogen, gallic acid etc.). We focus on the influence of surface modification of the working electrodes by carbon nanomaterials, metallic nanostructures, imprinted polymers and evaluate the corresponding sensing performance. Especially for pesticides, which are challenging and need special care, we highlight biosensors, such as enzymatic sensors, immunobiosensor, aptasensors, and biomimetic sensors. We discuss the sensors’ overall performance, especially concerning real-sample performance and the capability for actual field application.

Abstract:The excessive residue of neonicotinoid pesticides in the environment and food poses a severe threat to human health, necessitating the urgent development of a sensitive and efficient method for detecting trace amounts of these pesticides. Electrochemical sensors, characterized by their simplicity of operation, rapid response, low cost, strong selectivity, and high feasibility, have garnered significant attention for their immense potential in swiftly detecting trace target molecules. The detection capability of electrochemical sensors primarily relies on the catalytic activity of electrode materials towards the target analyte, efficient loading of biomolecular functionalities, and the effective conversion of interactions between the target analyte and its receptor into electrical signals. Electrode materials with superior performance play a crucial role in enhancing the detection capability of electrochemical sensors. With the continuous advancement of nanotechnology, particularly the widespread application of novel functional materials, there is paramount significance in broadening the applicability and expanding the detection range of pesticide sensors. This comprehensive review encapsulates the electrochemical detection mechanisms of neonicotinoid pesticides, providing detailed insights into the outstanding roles, advantages, and limitations of functional materials such as carbon-based materials, metal-organic framework materials, supramolecular materials, metal-based nanomaterials, as well as molecular imprinted materials, antibodies/antigens, and aptamers as molecular recognition elements in the construction of electrochemical sensors for neonicotinoid pesticides. Furthermore, prospects and challenges facing various electrochemical sensors based on functional materials for neonicotinoid pesticides are discussed, providing valuable insights for the future development and application of biosensors for simplified on-site detection of agricultural residues.

Abstract:Most food samples are detected positive for neonicotinoid insecticides, posing a severe threat to human health. Electrochemical sensors have been proven effective for monitoring the residues to guarantee food safety, but there needs to be more review to conclude the development status comprehensively. On the other hand, various modified materials were emphasized to improve the performance of electrochemical sensors in relevant reviews, rather than the reasons why they were selected. Therefore, this paper reviewed the electrochemical sensors of neonicotinoid insecticides according to bases and strategies. The fundamental basis is the molecular structure of neonicotinoid insecticides, which was disassembled into four functional groups: nitro group, saturated nitrogen ring system, aromatic heterocycle and chlorine substituent. Their relationships were established with strategies including direct sensing, enzyme sensors, aptasensors, immunosensors, and sample pretreatment, respectively. It is hoped to provide a reference for the effective design of electrochemical sensors for small molecule compounds.

Abstract:In last few years, sensing of molecules has gained a huge attention of scientists and researchers. Small molecules (drugs, pesticides, and others) are being consumed directly or indirectly by us in our daily life. Often, these molecules enter the environment and interact with different non-target organisms. Consumption of drugs/pesticides emerged as a major concern for public health, environment, ground-water and agricultural soil. Pesticides can have odd impacts such as degradation of soil properties, environmental pollution, pollution of groundwater as well as the consumption of unwanted drugs can have serious health impacts. Therefore, the sensing of drugs/pesticides plays an important role in detecting and preventing the unwanted usage of drugs/pesticides. Quantitative and qualitative determination of pesticides and drugs can be achieved using electrochemical techniques. This review offers a concise examination of the literature about the electrochemical sensing of drugs and pesticides. The review provides a comprehensive summary of different electrochemical investigations and outlines the reported analytical performance metrics, including limits of detection and linearity ranges. Furthermore, it underscores the progress made in pesticide detection using electrochemical methods for the selected compounds, highlighting the challenges ahead and emphasizing the necessary efforts to develop sensors suitable for in-situ applications.

Abstract:Neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) have garnered global attention due to their selective toxicity to insects and minimal impact on mammals. However, growing concerns about their extensive use and potential adverse effects on the ecological environment and non-target organisms necessitate further investigation. This study utilized bibliometric tools to analyze Web of Science data from 2003 to 2024, elucidating the current research landscape, identifying key research areas, and forecasting future trends related to NEOs. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of NEO exposure in non-target organisms, including risk assessments for various samples and maximum residue limits established by different countries. Additionally, it examines the impacts and mechanisms of NEOs on non-target organisms. Finally, it reviews the current methods for NEO removal and degradation. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights for regulating NEO usage and addressing associated exposure challenges.

Abstract:Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are synthetic insecticides with broad-spectrum insecticidal activity and outstanding efficacy. However, their extensive use and persistence in the environment have resulted in the accumulation and biomagnification of NEOs, posing significant risks to non-target organisms and humans. This review provides a summary of research history, advancements, and highlighted topics in NEOs remediation technologies and mechanisms. Various remediation approaches have been developed, including physiochemical, microbial, and phytoremediation, with microbial and physicochemical remediation being the most extensively studied. Recent advances in physiochemical remediation have led to the development of innovative adsorbents, photocatalysts, and optimized treatment processes. High-efficiency degrading strains with well-characterized metabolic pathways have been successfully isolated and cultured for microbial remediation, while many plant species have shown great potential for phytoremediation. However, significant challenges and gaps remain in this field. Future research should prioritize isolating, domesticating or engineering high efficiency, broad-spectrum microbial strains for NEO degradation, as well as developing synergistic remediation techniques to enhance removal efficiency on multiple NEOs with varying concentrations in different environmental media. Furthermore, a shift from pipe-end treatment to pollution prevention strategies is needed, including the development of green and economically efficient alternatives such as biological insecticides. Integrated remediation technologies and case-specific strategies that can be applied to practical remediation projects need to be developed, along with clarifying NEO degradation mechanisms to improve remediation efficiency. The successful implementation of these strategies will help reduce the negative impact of NEOs on the environment and human health.

Abstract:Pesticides are synthetic chemicals that destroy pests and insects, improving vegetation and damaging the ruling class. Pesticides gain the vegetation; However, the protective use of pesticides goes against the traditional ethics of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), leading to environmental concerns. It has been observed that neonicotinoid pesticides and their metabolites can continue and accumulate in soils. They are freely soluble in water and compulsive, draining into waterways, and more are found in environmental samples, eventually affecting human well-being. Therefore, regional instability, the traditional principles, and anthropogenic versus natural origin of conceivably dangerous title pesticide in soils and water assessment are precariously main to evaluate human impact. This review article mainly focuses on extensive information about the sample preparation methods, discovery methods, and the developed systems to samples from various fields of soils and water to detect the neonicotinoids.

Abstract:Neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) are a new class of neurotoxic pesticides primarily used for pest control on fruits and vegetables, cereals, and other crops after organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), carbamate pesticides (CBPs), and pyrethroid pesticides. However, chronic abuse and illegal use have led to the contamination of food and water sources as well as damage to ecological and environmental systems. Long-term exposure to NEOs may pose potential risks to animals (especially bees) and even human health. Consequently, it is necessary to develop effective, robust, and rapid methods for NEOs detection. Specific recognition-based chemical sensing has been regarded as one of the most promising detection tools for NEOs due to their excellent selectivity, sensitivity, and robust interference resistance. In this review, we introduce the novel recognition strategies-enabled chemical sensing in food neonicotinoids detection in the past years (2017-2023). The properties and advantages of molecular imprinting recognition (MIR), host-guest recognition (HGR), electron-catalyzed recognition (ECR), immune recognition (IR), aptamer recognition (AR), and enzyme inhibition recognition (EIR) in the development of NEOs sensing platforms are discussed in detail. Recent applications of chemical sensing platforms in various food products, including fruits and vegetables, cereals, teas, honey, aquatic products, and others are highlighted. In addition, the future trends of applying chemical sensing with specific recognition strategies for NEOs analysis are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we review the effects of large-scale neonicotinoid contaminations in the aquatic environment on non-target aquatic invertebrate and vertebrate species. These aquatic species are the fauna widely exposed to environmental changes and chemical accumulation in bodies of water. Neonicotinoids are insecticides that target the nicotinic type acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the central nervous systems (CNS) and are considered selective neurotoxins for insects. However, studies on their physiologic impacts and interactions with non-target species are limited. In researches dedicated to exploring physiologic and toxic outcomes of neonicotinoids, studies relating to the effects on vertebrate species represent a minority case compared to invertebrate species. For aquatic species, the known effects of neonicotinoids are described in the level of organismal, behavioral, genetic and physiologic toxicities. Toxicological studies were reported based on the environment of bodies of water, temperature, salinity and several other factors. There exists a knowledge gap on the relationship between toxicity outcomes to regulatory risk valuation. It has been a general observation among studies that neonicotinoid insecticides demonstrate significant toxicity to an extensive variety of invertebrates. Comprehensive analysis of data points to a generalization that field-realistic and laboratory exposures could result in different or non-comparable results in some cases. Aquatic invertebrates perform important roles in balancing a healthy ecosystem, thus rapid screening strategies are necessary to verify physiologic and toxicological impacts. So far, much of the studies describing field tests on non-target species are inadequate and in many cases, obsolete. Considering the current literature, this review addresses important information gaps relating to the impacts of neonicotinoids on the environment and spring forward policies, avoiding adverse biological and ecological effects on a range of non-target aquatic species which might further impair the whole of the aquatic ecological web.

Abstract:Abstract: The use of organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) in agricultural practices improves crop yield and controls pests, but their indiscriminate use and persistence in the environment pose significant health risks. Therefore, it has become increasingly important to develop reliable and efficient detection methods for OPPs to ensure food safety and monitor their presence. In recent years, OPP detection methods have undergone significant advancements. Sensors such as colorimetric, fluorescence, electrochemical, and impedometric offer several advantages over traditional methods, such as high sensitivity, selectivity, and portability. The purpose of this review paper is to provide an overview of recent developments in OPP detection methods. The paper discusses the different types of sensors that are available for the detection of OPPs, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Many electrochemical methods have been employed to investigate OPP detection, including voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, and amperometry. The integration of nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, and metal nanoparticles, has significantly enhanced the performance of electrochemical sensors by providing high surface area, enhanced electron transfer, and specific analyte interactions. Furthermore, the review discusses the utilization of biomolecules, such as enzymes and aptamers, as recognition elements in sensor platforms for selective and sensitive OPP detection. The incorporation of these biomolecules offers high specificity and enables real-time monitoring of OPP residues in food samples and environmental matrices. It emphasizes the importance of continued research and development to optimize detection methods, improve sensor performance, and make these technologies more widely accessible for effective monitoring and control of OPP contamination in various domains.

Abstract:Overview of the rapid analysis of pesticides using nanomaterials. The extensive use of chemical pesticides has significantly boosted agricultural food crop yields. Nevertheless, their excessive and unregulated application has resulted in food contamination and pollution in environmental, aquatic, and agricultural ecosystems. Consequently, the on‐site monitoring of pesticide residues in agricultural practices is paramount to safeguard global food and conservational safety. Traditional pesticide detection methods are cumbersome and ill‐suited for on‐site pesticide finding. The systematic review provides an in‐depth analysis of the current status and perspectives of nanobiosensors (NBS) for pesticide detection in the agricultural arena. Furthermore, the study encompasses the fundamental principles of NBS, the various transduction mechanisms employed, and their incorporation into on‐site detection platforms. Conversely, the assortment of transduction mechanisms, including optical, electrochemical, and piezoelectric tactics, is deliberated in detail, emphasizing its advantages and limitations in pesticide perception. Incorporating NBS into on‐site detection platforms confirms a vital feature of their pertinence. The evaluation reflects the integration of NBS into lab‐on‐a‐chip systems, handheld devices, and wireless sensor networks, permitting real‐time monitoring and data‐driven decision‐making in agronomic settings. The potential for robotics and automation in pesticide detection is also scrutinized, highlighting their role in improving competence and accuracy. Finally, this systematic review provides a complete understanding of the current landscape of NBS for on‐site pesticide sensing. Consequently, we anticipate that this review offers valuable insights that could form the foundation for creating innovative NBS applicable in various fields such as materials science, nanoscience, food technology and environmental science.

This review systematically investigates and provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments in smart electrochemical devices for detecting pesticides in agricultural food and runoff contaminants. The focus encompasses recent progress in lab-scale and portable electrochemical sensors, highlighting their significance in agricultural pesticide monitoring. This review compares these sensors comprehensively and provides a scientific guide for future sensor development for infield agricultural pesticide monitoring and food safety. Smart devices address challenges related to power consumption, low cost, wearability, and portability, contributing to the advancement of agricultural sustainability. Abstract:Neonicotinoid pesticides were initially designed in order to achieve species selectivity on insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). However, concerns arose when agonistic effects were also detected in human cells expressing nAChRs. In the context of next-generation risk assessments (NGRAs), new approach methods (NAMs) should replace animal testing where appropriate. Herein, we present a combination of in silico and in vitro methodologies that are used to investigate the potentially toxic effects of neonicotinoids and nicotinoid metabolites on human neurons. First, an ensemble docking study was conducted on the nAChR isoforms α7 and α3β4 to assess potential crucial molecular initiating event (MIE) interactions. Representative docking poses were further refined using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and binding energy calculations using implicit solvent models. Finally, calcium imaging on LUHMES neurons confirmed a key event (KE) downstream of the MIE. This method was also used to confirm the predicted agonistic effect of the metabolite descyano-thiacloprid (DCNT).

Abstract:Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are fourth generation pesticides, which emerged after organophosphates, pyrethroids, and carbamates and they are widely used in vegetables, fruits, cotton, rice, and other industrial crops to control insect pests. NEOs are considered ideal substitutes for highly toxic pesticides. Multiple studies have reported NEOs have harmful impacts on non-target biological targets, such as bees, aquatic animals, birds, and mammals. Thus, the remediation of neonicotinoid-sullied environments has gradually become a concern. Microbial degradation is a key natural method for eliminating neonicotinoid insecticides, as biodegradation is an effective, practical, and environmentally friendly strategy for the removal of pesticide residues. To date, several neonicotinoid-degrading strains have been isolated from the environment, including Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Bacillus thuringiensis, Ensifer meliloti, Pseudomonas stutzeri, Variovorax boronicumulans, and Fusarium sp., and their degradation properties have been investigated. Furthermore, the metabolism and degradation pathways of neonicotinoids have been broadly detailed. Imidacloprid can form 6-chloronicotinic acid via the oxidative cleavage of guanidine residues, and it is then finally converted to non-toxic carbon dioxide. Acetamiprid can also be demethylated to remove cyanoimine (=N-CN) to form a less toxic intermediate metabolite. A few studies have discussed the neonicotinoid toxicity and microbial degradation in contaminated environments. This review is focused on providing an in-depth understanding of neonicotinoid toxicity, microbial degradation, catabolic pathways, and information related to the remediation process of NEOs. Future research directions are also proposed to provide a scientific basis for the risk assessment and removal of these pesticides.

Abstract:An overview of the actual state-of-the-art sample treatment procedures for trace and ultra-trace determination of neonicotinoids (NQs) in environmental, food and biological samples is presented. Analytical procedures for NQs, sometimes together with their metabolites/by-products, and NQ-related new generation pesticides have been considered, focusing on sample preparation, which is essential in most cases due to both the complexity of the matrices and low concentrations of residual analytes. Different strategies have been practised for analytes extraction/preconcentration/cleanup, entailing various techniques as solid-liquid extraction (SLE), liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), offline and online solid-phase extraction (SPE), dispersive SPE (d-SPE), magnetic SPE (MSPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) approach. New solid phases, including inorganic and carbon-based materials, have been prepared, also starting from “green” precursors, and successfully employed in the sample treatment step before hyphenated liquid chromatography or direct electrochemical detection. As well, new environmentally friendly solvents have been evaluated for LLE. The most recent studies (2022-present), around 50 papers, have been reviewed by matrix type, briefly described and commented concerning extraction efficiency, matrix effect, sensitivity, ease of application and sample throughput. Advantages and drawbacks were highlighted, as well as new achievements paving the way for further improvements.

Abstract:Increasing global population demands modernization in agricultural production to achieve sustainable food security. The frequent pest infestation causes a significant economic loss and deleterious impact on agriculture production. While, the traditional application of conventional pesticides leads to loss of soil biodiversity, decline in pollinator population, and negative impacts on non-target organisms. In recent years, nanotechnology has gained much interest in agricultural application. Various studies have demonstrated the beneficial effect of engineered nanomaterials as an active ingredients or the nanoformulations in insect pest control and plant protection. Nanopesticides have shown more advantages over conventional pesticides in terms of high adsorption, reduced volatilization, improved tissue permeation, controlled release, etc. However, studies are also highlighting the potential toxicity of nanopesticides in non-target organism and their environmental risk. The goal of this review is to provide a comprehensive information on recent developments in nanopesticides and its consequences in the environment. This review highlights various aspects of nanopesticides including, preparation methods, types, characterization techniques, importance in pest control, toxicity in plant and animal models, environmental risk, and current approaches in risk assessment and regulatory strategies.

Abstract:India has achieved its food security through the green revolution and technological revolution, although food safety is still not realized. Subsequently, agricultural runoffs, industrial wastes and domestic sewages continuously contaminate the water and the associated livelihood through several contaminants. Pesticides and their residues, which function as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), influence the food web through water resources, among other things. The gold standard conventional procedures are used to identify these pesticide residues. However, the introduction of the technology revolution necessitates the use of screening instruments to conduct a pre-inspection of drinkable commodities in order to achieve a better health economy. In the recent decade, microelectronics-based highly sensitive instruments enabled with real-time measurement of pesticide residues is now possible. In addition, the introduction of novel nanosensors and biosensors into revolutionary microelectronics-based devices has improved the performance of these portable instruments in terms of detecting trace-level pesticide residues. Comprehensive assessments of microelectronics-based sensors with comparative benefits, on the other hand, are rare. Herein we review the critical advanced sensory techniques. The significant points are as follows: (1) the state-of-the-art focuses on rapid, portable, and cost-effective optical and electrochemical biosensory tools for pesticide detection in water; (2) a quick overview of commercially available portable devices has been summarized as potential to become next-generation screening tools.
