Abstract:Invasive alien species (IAS) are a major global challenge requiring urgent action, and the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity (2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016)(2017)(2018)(2019)(2020) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) includes a target on the issue.Meeting the target requires an understanding of invasion patterns.However, national or regional analyses of invasions are limited to developed countries.We identified 488 IAS in China's terrestrial habitats, inland waters and marine ecosystems based on available literature and field work, including 171 animals, 265 plants, 26 fungi, 3 protists, 11 procaryots, and 12 viruses.Terrestrial plants account for 51.6% of the total number of IAS, and terrestrial invertebrates (104 species) for 21.3%.Of the total numbers, 67.9% of plant IAS and 34.8% of animal IAS were introduced intentionally.All other taxa were introduced unintentionally despite very few animal and plant species that invaded naturally.In terms of habitats, 64.3% of IAS occur on farmlands, 13.9% in forests, 8.4% in marine ecosystems, 7.3% in inland waters, and 6.1% in residential areas.Half of all IAS (51.1%) originate from North and South America, 18.3% from Europe, 17.3% from Asia not including China, 7.2% from Africa, 1.8% from Oceania, and the origin of the remaining 4.3% IAS is unknown.The distribution of IAS can be divided into three zones.Most IAS are distributed in coastal

Abstract:Although invasive alien species have long been recognized as a major threat to nature and people, until now there has been no comprehensive global review of the status, trends, drivers, impacts, management and governance challenges of biological invasions. The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Thematic Assessment Report on Invasive Alien Species and Their Control (hereafter 'IPBES invasive alien species assessment') drew on more than 13,000 scientific publications and reports in 15 languages as well as Indigenous and local knowledge on all taxa, ecosystems and regions across the globe. Therefore, it provides unequivocal evidence of the major and growing threat of invasive alien species alongside ambitious but realistic approaches to manage biological invasions. The extent of the threat and impacts has been recognized by the 143 member states of IPBES who approved the summary for policymakers of this assessment. Here, the authors of the IPBES assessment outline the main findings of the IPBES invasive alien species assessment and highlight the urgency to act now.

Status Analysis of the Ecologic Risk Assessment of Invasive Alien Plants in China

Abstract:Biological invasion has become one of the hot spots of ecologic environment problems in the world. The study on the ecologic risk evaluation of invasive alien plants is aim to evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the probability of the alient plants invasion and the damage that it could bring to the ecosystem, and to reach the goal of ecological risk management so as to improve the eco-environment and economic coordinated development. Basded on the present situation of invasive alien plants ecological risk evaluation in China, this thesis mainly comprehensively analyzed the sources of invasive alien plants ecological risk and the damage which may cause, explored the assessment method and comprehensive evaluation model on the invasive alien plants ecological risk, established the indexes system and judging standard of alien plants invasive risk, and classified the alien plants risk levels in our country. In the end of thesis, some suggestions on the ecological risk management of invasive alien plants were put forward.

Abstract:With the rapid development of economic globalization, invasive species have become a far-reaching global issue. Impacts of invasive insects on agriculture, forestry, ecology, socio-economy and human health are becoming increasingly serious and cause for concern. In this paper, we introduce advances in theoretical and applied research on 14 invasive insects in China and summarize novel theory, methods and recent progress. Perspectives and directions for future research on invasive insects are discussed. The results provide new insights for the early warning, prevention, detection, monitoring, management, and control, of invasive insects.

Abstract:The impact of invasive alien species (IAS) on nature and society is increasing globally. It is crucial to utilize information systems for evidence-based management, enabling the assessment and supporting survey and control actions. However, the lack of accessible and comprehensive baseline IAS data often impedes the ability to prioritize and allocate resources efficiently. Despite the increased public awareness of biological invasions in China over the past decades, the critical importance of data requirements has not been fully recognized, leading to gaps in available data. Here, we outline the key data demands for the management of biological invasions and highlight the current lack of high-quality data for invasion management in China, and critically assess data gaps in IAS distribution, inventory, and impact. Additionally, we propose a conceptual framework to illustrate the data requirements throughout the invasion management process, along with indicators to assess data quality within three dimensions: relevance, resolution, and reliability.

Abstract:The invasion and expansion of alien species in China is rising sharply in recent decades, due to increased transport, trade, and travel. China has become one of the countries most seriously affected by invasive species. In response to the severe threat of invasive alien species in China, the national strategies for managing invasive species have been developed, which defined the roles and responsibilities of government. In the past decades, Chinese government has initiated a series of activities to build administrative capacity, strengthen research capacity, promote international cooperation and raise public awareness. In addition, Chinese government promoted the implementation of coordinated measures and cooperative efforts throughout China and development of new prevention and control technology to prevent or minimize adverse impacts of invasive alien species (IAS) on biodiversity, as well as their consequences for the economy and human health and well-beings. But to meet the challenge of IAS in the new era, continued support of both existing and new initiatives should be reinforced or established.

Abstract:Thirty-four alien invasive species (AIS) including 11 species of animals and 23 species of plants in Beijing were numerated in the present paper through field and literature investigations. Their distribution ranges and damages were briefly listed. Some severe damaging species should be controlled and deracinated at the early stage of their invasion. The environmental impact assessment and risk analyses of some species should be conducted before they are introduced or applied. And some AISs that are causing severe damages in the regions surrounding Beijing should be monitored, and measures should be taken to prevent them from entering Beijing. The control strategies to AIS were discussed.
Research and Management of Biological Invasions in China: Future Perspectives

Abstract:In the past decades, China has made great achievements in both fundamental research and applied management of biological invasions. Meanwhile, upon the increasing of international trade and global changes as well as the initiating of new opening-up strategy, China is facing an even more serious threat from effects of globalization. Here we propose future perspectives on both studying and managing biological invasions in China. Based on the current research progress and future trends of biological invasions, China should strengthen studies in the following areas: (i) carrying out extensive surveys on current status of invasive alien species (IAS); (ii) deeply investigating mechanisms of invasion success and species invasiveness; (iii) evaluating the invasibility of various ecosystems; (iv) developing methods for rapid detection and sustainable control; (v) strengthening governments' roles; and (vi) promoting international cooperation. We emphasize the necessity of directing more efforts towards research areas that were poorly studied before, such as ecosystem invasibility, and the invasions in nature reserves and grasslands. In addition, strengthening governments' roles would be also crucial to build an effective IAS managing framework in China.
Present status, future trends, and control strategies of invasive alien plants in China affected by human activities and climate change

Abstract:Invasive alien plants (IAPs) have serious environmental and economic impacts, especially in vulnerable areas of China. However, IAP richness distribution patterns, their driving factors, and the dynamic shifts in potential distribution areas remain elusive. We assessed IAP richness distribution patterns and drivers using 402 IAPs recorded in China at 88 926 occurrence points, and then predicted their potential distribution areas. The results show that IAP hotspots were mainly located in southeastern China, especially coastal areas of the South and East and large inland cities. Population density, gross domestic product (GDP), and four climate variables associated with precipitation and temperature jointly influenced the richness distribution pattern of all IAPs. Specifically, population density and GDP impacted the richness distribution pattern of narrow‐range IAPs, and population density, GDP, distance to the nearest national highway, and five climate variables affected the richness distribution pattern of widespread IAPs. Only GDP contributed significantly to the richness distribution pattern of the top 5% hotspot grid cells, whereas population density, GDP, and precipitation in the driest month (BIO14) significantly influenced the richness distribution patterns of hotspots for both the top 10% and top 20%. Prediction analysis demonstrated that southeastern China would have particularly high invasion risk under both current and future climate scenarios. Regions with increases in predicted species richness are more common (44.83–64.97%) than those with decreases, except under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 scenario. Climate change will contribute greatly to the expansion of potential IAP distribution areas under both optimistic (RCP 2.5) and pessimistic scenarios (RCP 8.5). The results of this study provide insights into the priority management of IAPs by developing promising strategies for the control and prevention of IAP invasion.

Abstract:A list of invasive alien species (IAS) is essential for initiating an analysis of the biological and ecological traits of such species and for improving our understanding of patterns of biological invasions. An inventory of IAS in Shanghai was prepared through a literature survey. A total of 212 IAS belonging to 63 orders and 87 families were recorded. Of these, 65% were plants, 29% were animals, and the rest were microorganisms. Dominant groups could be distinguished in both plant and animal groups. Species originating from the Americas made up 51% of the total, while 52% of plant species were introduced intentionally and 82% of animal species unintentionally. Of the invasive plants, 93% are distributed in highly disturbed habitats with rich resources, whereas 76% of invasive animals occur in storehouses and farmlands. The present information on diversity and ecological features of IAS is crucial for designing management strategies against the negative impacts of such species in Shanghai.

Abstract:Data of classification, origin, pathway and environmental impacts of invasive alien micro-organisms, invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles, fish, birds, mammals, weeds, trees, and marine organisms in terrestrial, aquatic and marine ecosystems of China, were analyzed, based on literature retrieval, field survey and consultation. Some 283 invasive alien species were recorded in China, including 19 invasive alien micro-organisms, 18 aquatic plants, 170 terrestrial plants, 25 aquatic invertebrates, 33 terrestrial invertebrates, 3 amphibians and reptiles, 10 fish, and 5 mammals. Of the invasive alien species, 55.1% originated from North and South America, 21.7% from Europe, 9.9% from Asia, 8.1% from Africa and 0.6% from Oceania. Many institutions and individuals in China lack adequate knowledge of ecological and environmental consequences caused by invasive alien species, with some ignorance of the dangerous invasion in the introduction of alien species. For instance, 50.0% of invasive alien plants were intentionally introduced as pasture, feedingstuff, ornamental plants, textile plants, medicinal plants, vegetables, or lawn plants, 25% of alien invasive animals were intentionally introduced for cultivation, ornament, or biological control, In addition, more efforts are being made in the introduction of alien species, and little attention is paid on the management of introduced alien species, which may cause their escape into natural environment and potential threats to the environment. There were also gaps in quarantine system in China. All microorganisms were unintentionally introduced, through timber, seedling, flowerpot, or soil; 76.3% of alien invasive animals invaded through commodity or transportation facility because of the failure of quarantine. Therefore, quarantine measures should be strictly implemented; and meanwhile the intentional introduction of alien species should be strictly managed and a system of risk assessment should be implemented.

Abstract:Invasive species cause serious environmental and economic harm and threaten global biodiversity. We set out to investigate how quickly invasive plant species are currently spreading in China and how their resulting distribution patterns are linked to socio-economic and environmental conditions. A comparison of the invasive plant species density (log species/log area) reported in 2008 with current data shows that invasive species were originally highly concentrated in the wealthy, southeastern coastal provinces of China, but they are currently rapidly spreading inland. Linear regression models based on the species density and turnover of invasive plants as dependent parameters and principal components representing key socio-economic and environmental parameters as predictors indicate strong positive links between invasive plant density and the overall phytodiversity and associated climatic parameters. Principal components representing socio-economic factors and endemic plant density also show significant positive links with invasive plant density. Urgent control and eradication measures are needed in China's coastal provinces to counteract the rapid inland spread of invasive plants. Strict controls of imports through seaports need to be accompanied by similarly strict controls of the developing horticultural trade and underpinned by awareness campaigns for China's increasingly affluent population to limit the arrival of new invaders. Furthermore, China needs to fully utilize its substantial native phytodiversity, rather than relying on exotics, in current large-scale afforestation projects and in the creation of urban green spaces.
Spatial Risk Assessment Of Alien Invasive Plants In China

Abstract:The large-scale distribution patterns of alien invasive plants (AIP) can provide key information and a theoretical basis for management strategies, including the prevention of invasions, the control and eradication of established AIPs, and the identification of areas at high risk of invasion. This study aims to quantify distribution patterns of AIP in China, to develop approaches that measure the social, economic, and ecological impacts, and to identify areas that are at higher risk of plant invasion. Based on published literature, there were 384 AIPs in China, representing 233 genera from 66 families. Climatic factors were among the primary factors determining AIPs overall distribution patterns. The majority of AIPs were tropically distributed in China, meaning that they were mainly restricted to southern China. Temperate-distributed AIPs, those distributed only or predominantly in northern China, were fewer but had higher average rates of spread than tropically distributed AIPs. Average ecological and economic impact per AIP was negatively correlated with AIP richness, meaning that areas with relatively few AIPs nevertheless have some of the most detrimental ones. Our comparative evaluation showed that the risk of invasion differed among regions of China, with high-risk areas in southern China (Yunnan, Guangxi, and Guangdong) and central coastal areas of eastern China (Shandong, Hebei, and Jiangsu). In the context of climate change, areas around latitudes of 33 degrees N, including Hebei, Shandong, Henan, and Jiangsu, should be given more attention for the control and prevention of plant invasions. Predictions of high-risk areas for future invasions differed depending on the scale of aggregation and the evaluation index, indicating that invasive risk assessments should be based on multiple factors.
Plant Invasions in China: an Emerging Hot Topic in Invasion Science

Abstract:China has shown a rapid economic development in recent decades, and several drivers of this change are known to enhance biological invasions, a major cause of biodiversity loss. Here we review the current state of research on plant invasions in China by analyzing papers referenced in the ISI Web of Knowledge. Since 2001, the number of papers has increased exponentially, indicating that plant invasions in China are an emerging hot topic in invasion science. The analyzed papers cover a broad range of methodological approaches and research topics. While more that 250 invasive plant species with negative impacts have been reported from China, only a few species have been considered in more than a handful of papers (in order of decreasing number of references: Spartina alterniflora, Ageratina adenophora, Mikania micrantha, Alternanthera philoxeroides, Solidago canadensis, Eichhornia crassipes). Yet this selection might rather reflect the location of research teams than the most invasive plant species in China. Considering the previous achievements in China found in our analysis research in plant invasions could be expanded by (1) compiling comprehensive lists of non-native plant species at the provincial and national scales and to include species that are native to one part of China but non-native to others in these lists; (2) strengthening pathways studies (primary introduction to the country, secondary releases within the country) to enhance prevention and management; and (3) assessing impacts of invasive species at different spatial scales (habitats, regions) and in relation to conservation resources.
Invasive Alien Plants in China: Diversity and Ecological Insights

Abstract:China’s current invasive alien plant species were analyzed with regard to their floristic status, biological attributes and invasion status elsewhere. Most of the 270 species identified were annuals, followed by perennial herbs. Woody perennials made only about 10% of the species. The invasives were comprised of 59 families, the largest being Asteraceae, Poaceae, and Brassicaceae. The genera with most invasive species were Amaranthus, Ipomoea, and Solanum. Most of the species originated from the New World, notably from South America. About one-third of the species were serious invaders of natural habitats in countries other than China. The proportion of invasive alien plants in province floras ranged from 0.5 to 3.8%, absolute numbers from nine to 117 species per province. Density of invasive species was correlated positively with native species density at provincial scale. The results demonstrate that in China invasive plants are present throughout the country, with a particularly high species richness in the Southeast. The ecological diversity of invasive plants suggests wide ranging impacts which need to be assessed.

Abstract:With a wide range of habitats and exploding development of international trade, China is facing escalating risk of the plant invasion. Research on the risk assessment of alien invasive plants may help us manage the invasive with priority, and is imperatively needed in China. However, until now, few studies have been conducted for the risk of alien invasive plants and its spatial patterns in China, especially with a regard to ecosystem conservation and biodiversity protection. In this paper, we assessed the risk of invasive plants and its spatial patterns. We focused on the following basic questions: Which alien invasive plants are the most noxious, and which of them are mild? How are the spatial patterns of alien invasive plants at different risk ranks? In the present study, the risk of 100 major alien invasive plants in China was assessed based on a revised risk assessment system and an extensive consult with literatures. The results indicated that there were 18 species of rank 1st, 29 of rank 2nd, 33 of rank 3rd and 20 of rank 4th. Although, there was high richness of alien invasive plants in South China, most of them were of low risk. By contrast, low richness of alien invasive plants was observed in North China and the regions in high altitude, but most of the invasive were of high risk. Compared with previous studies, our study appears to have delivered credible results and may play an early warning function, and also further our understanding of the risk of invasive plants and its spatial patterns in China, though we acknowledged that the risk assessment may have some potential weakness, and appealed timely and further investigations in future.

Abstract:Biological invasion pose a severe threat to global biodiversity, and studies of bioinvasion patterns and the underlying mechanisms provide critical tests to ecological theories. China is a global hotspot of biodiversity and also biological invasions. The understanding of mechanisms for bioinvasion patterns has been limited by inadequacy of data spatial resolution, and lack of a historical perspective. This study compiled the first nation-scale distribution data with a sub-provincial spatial unit (prefecture) for 463 invasive alien plants species (IAPS) recorded in China, as well as their introduction times. The spatiotemporal patterns of species richness of invasive alien plants, including three life forms (annual-biennial, perennial, and woody) were explored, then related the species richness patterns with environmental, social-economic and historical factors. Statistical analyses included quantile regression, generalized linear model (GLM), and hierarchical variation partitioning. The results indicated that: (1) herbaceous species comprised 84% of the 463 IAPS in China; (2) plant introductions into China accelerated since 1800, reaching the maximum rate during 1900–1940. IAPS richness had a closer correlation with the time of newest introduction (R2 = 0.155) than with that of the oldest introduction (R2 = 0.472); (3) IAPS richness decreases with increasing latitude (r = −0.32, P < 0.001) and decreases from the coastal and southern terrestrial borders to inland regions, but doesn’t increase with prefecture size. The three life forms of IAPS showed similar latitudinal patterns of species richness and divergent latitudinal patterns of species percentage. (4) IAPS richness showed significantly positive correlations with thermal climate and a negative relationship with climate seasonality. GLM explained up to 65% of the variation in spatial patterns of IAPS and three life forms; with much less variation explained in the species percentage patterns. The year of the most recent IAPS introduction and the low temperature limit jointly dominated spatial patterns of IAPS richness in China, whereas road density showed little effect. Therefore, global warming and economic globalization play a prominent role in promoting biological invasion in the last few decades, and will continue to drive the trend of plant invasion in China and probably elsewhere.

Abstract:Alien invasive species are becoming more and more pervasive throughout the world,which have caused severe social,economic and ecological problems.These species are devastating structure and function of ecosystems, destroying integrity of natural ecosystems,accelerating extinction of species, and increasing the loss of biodiversity.China also faces the urging problems of the alien species invasions;for the time being,there are 283 alien invasive species in total,which have caused great economic problems.By a rough estimation,the economic losses amount to 144.8 hundred million US dollars per year in China.Considering the current conditions of alien invasive species problems and their research development in the Scientific Communities of China and the world, the following phenomena and problems were put forward as priority research and development fields of invasive biology in this paper.They are the further studies on the theory of invasion mechanism,process and ecological effects;the development of alien species database and establishment of earlywarning system;the effects of alien species invasion on the food web structure,the species biodiversity and the functions of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem.
