Abstract:Abstract The structural characterization of the [(CH 2 ] 3 (NH 3 ) 2 ] + cation in the perovskite [(CH 2 ) 3 (NH 3 ) 2 ]CuCl 4 crystal was performed by solid-state 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The 1 H NMR chemical shifts for NH 3 changed more significantly with temperature than those for CH 2 . This change in cationic motion is enhanced at the N-end of the organic cation, which is fixed to the inorganic layer by N–H···Cl hydrogen bonds. The 13 C chemical shifts for CH 2 -1 increase slowly without any anomalous change, while those for CH 2 -2 move abruptly compared to CH 2 -1 with increasing temperature. The four peaks of two groups in the 14 N NMR spectra, indicating the presence of a ferroelastic multidomain, were reduced to two peaks of one group near T C2 (= 333 K); the 14 N NMR data clearly indicated changes in atomic configuration at this temperature. In addition, 1 H and 13 C spin–lattice have shorter relaxation times (T 1ρ ), in the order of milliseconds because T 1ρ is inversely proportional to the square of the magnetic moment of paramagnetic ions. The T 1ρ values for CH 2 and NH 3 protons were almost independent of temperature, but the CH 2 moiety located in the middle of the N–C–C–C–N bond undergoes tumbling motion according to the Bloembergen–Purcell–Pound theory. Ferroelasticity is the main cause for the phase transition near T C2 .

Abstract:The structural, thermal, and physical properties of newly developed lead-free hybrid perovskite solar cells are discussed for [NH3(CH2)6NH3]CuBr4. The hybrid material undergoes a phase transition at 269 K (TC), and is thermodynamically stable until approximately 472 K. The crystal structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction is monoclinic and triclinic above and below TC, respectively. The 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, recorded as a function of the temperature, revealed considerable changes in the 1H chemical shifts of NH3 and the 13C chemical shifts of the carbon atoms close to N as a result of the structural phase transition. The large difference in the activation energy, obtained from the 13C spin-lattice relaxation time above and below TC, also appears to be related to energy transfer changes in 13C. The thermal stabilities of [NH3(CH2) n NH3]CuBr4 (n = 3, 4, and 6) were compared by varying the number of methylene units, and the temperature with 2 % weight loss was shown to decrease as the number of methylene units increases. This in-depth analysis of the physical properties is expected to promote the development and application of lead-free hybrid perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Abstract Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites can potentially be used in electrochemical devices, such as batteries and fuel cells. In this study, the structure and phase transition temperatures of the organic–inorganic material [NH 3 (CH 2 ) 5 NH 3 ]CdCl 4 crystal were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. From the nuclear magnetic resonance results, the crystallographic configurations of 1 H, 13 C, and 14 N in the cation changed at temperatures close to T C1 (336 K), whereas that of 113 Cd in the anion shows significant changes at temperatures close to T C1 and T C2 (417 K). The activation energy, E a , values for 1 H and 13 C obtained from the spin–lattice relaxation time, T 1ρ , below and above T C1 were evaluated, where the E a value for 13 C was more flexible at low temperatures than at high temperatures. In addition, the effect on molecular motion was effective at high temperatures. The phase transition at 336 K was associated with the change in the N–H···Cl bond due to the change in the coordination geometry of Cl around Cd in the CdCl 6 anion. On the other hand, the phase transition at 417 K was related to the ferroelastic phase transition attributed to the twin domains.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites are highly promising for application in various electrochemical devices, such as batteries and fuel cells. The physical properties of crystals of the organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite [NH3(CH2)6NH3]CdCl4 are important for their future application. Therefore, these crystals were grown and their phase transition temperatures TC1 = 337 K and TC2 = 472 K were determined using powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. We observed that the crystallographic surroundings of 1H and 13C in the cation near TC1 did not show significant changes, whereas those of 113Cd in the anion changed significantly. The change in the coordination geometry of C1 around Cd near TC1 changed the N–H···Cl bond by connecting with the 1H of NH3. The nuclear magnetic resonance spin-lattice relaxation time T1ρ suggested that the 1H energy transfer processes in phases III and II were easier, whereas the 13C energy transfer processes were easier in phase III than in phase II. The results of the current study for [NH3(CH2) n NH3]CdCl4 (n = 6) were compared with those for n = 2, 3, 4, and 5 obtained from previous studies. The features of the length of CH2 and even–odd number of carbons in the diammonium chain are expected to facilitate potential applications in the future.

Abstract:As part of obtaining excellent properties that can be used as lead-free hybrid solar cells, the crystal growth, crystal structure, phase transition temperature, and thermal properties for [NH3(CH2)2NH3]CuBr4 were discussed. The crystal structure at 300 K was determined to be monoclinic by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The phase transition temperatures were determined to be 447 and 473 K, and the results were consistent with the powder XRD patterns. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed thermal stability up to ~ 460 K. The continuous changes in the 1H and 13C chemical shifts and 14N static resonance frequency with increasing temperature are related to variations in the local environment and coordination geometry. The significant differences in activation energies obtained from the 1H and 13C spin-lattice relaxation times (t1ρ) at low and high temperatures were discussed. The activation energy results suggested that the energy barrier at low temperatures was related to the reorientation of the NH3 and CH2 groups around the three-fold symmetry axis, and the energy barrier at high temperatures was related to the reorientation of the [NH3(CH2)2NH3] cation. Abstract:Understanding the physical properties of the organic-inorganic hybrid NH(CH3)3CuCl3·2H2O is necessary for its potential applications. Initially, the monoclinic structure of this crystal was discussed via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Moreover, the previously unknown phase transition temperature was 350 K, as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry and powder X-ray diffraction. Attributed to ferroelasticity, domain walls were observed between the temperatures T c (Low) (223 K) and T c (High) (350 K). Furthermore, changes in chemical shifts for 1H and 13C indicated alterations in the molecular environment, whereas a notable decrease in line width was attributed to increased molecular motion freedom. Subsequently, spin-lattice relaxation times (T 1ρ values) for 1H and 13C (indicative of energy transfer) were influenced by tumbling motions. The high activation energy barrier for molecular reorientation was associated with the tumbling motion of methyl groups around the triple symmetry axis. These foundational properties guide the development of efficient organic-inorganic hybrids suitable for practical applications.

Abstract:The structural behavior of Mg3N2 has been investigated up to 40.7 GPa at room temperature by means of angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction. A reversible, first-order structural phase transition from the ambient cubic phase (la (3) over bar) to a high-pressure monoclinic phase (C2/m) is found to start at similar to 20.6 GPa and complete at similar to 32.5 GPa for the first time. The equation of state determined from our experiments yields bulk moduli of 110.7(2) and 171.5(1) GPa for the cubic and monoclinic phases, respectively, indicating higher incompressibility of the high-pressure phase Of Mg3N2. First-principles calculations reproduced the phase stability and transition pressure determined in our experiment, In addition, a second phase transition from the monoclinic phase to a hexagonal phase (P (3) over barm(1)) was predicted around 67 GPa for Mg3N2. The electronic band structures of three phases of Mg3N2 are also calculated and discussed.

Abstract:Synchrotron radiation angle resolved photoemission spectra (PES) were measured on the (111) surface of K3C60 single crystal film at three different temperatures, namely, 190, 220 and 300K. Dispersions for the subbands of the conduction band along the [111] direction could be observed clearly at 190K, and the band structure was nearly the same as that at 150K corresponding to the one-dimensional-disordered orientational structure (1DDS) of K3C60. Most subpeaks smeared and the dispersions could no longer be observed when the sample temperature was raised to 220K. The PES at room temperature differed remarkably from that at lower temperatures. The change of spectra with temperature is consistent with an orientational phase transition at 200K, and can be explained by the theory of the fcc antiferromagnetic Ising model, assuming that the 1DD structure at lower temperatures converts to be a mixture of bi-directional structure domains and disordered molecules at higher temperatures.

Abstract:The crystal structure of NaMgF3 perovskite is observed to transform directly from orthorhombic (Pbnm) to cubic (Pm3m) at a temperature of Tc = 765°C. Superlattice diffractions associated with in-phase and anti-phase octahedral tilts vanish simultaneously at the transition temperature. The intensities of the superlattice diffractions, the atomic displacements, and the octahedral tilts follow a Landau type of critical behavior as the temperature approaches Tc. The structural phase transition in NaMgF3 perovskite can be modelled as a tricritical ferroelastic phase transition. The octahedral tilts θ and φ represent the primary order parameters of the phase transition, and the coupling between these two order parameters are observed to be bi-quadratic. The spontaneous strain for the m3mFmmm ferroelastic species is derived in terms of lattice parameters and its relation to the ferroelastic species m3mF4/mmm and 4/mmmFmmm are discussed. It is demonstrated experimentally that the coupling between the spontaneous strain and the octahedral tilts of perovskites is in a linear-quadratic form. Excess physical properties (thermal expansion and heat capacity, etc.) are observed to have a λ-anomaly during the structural phase transition in NaMgF3 perovskite, and are considered to be directly associated with the excess Gibbs free energy.

Abstract:The pressure and temperature phase diagram of the halide-based perovskite, CsCaCl 3 is investigated using neutron diffraction. At ambient pressure, it undergoes a cubic to tetragonal phase transition at approximately 95 K. The structural evolution is characterised by changes in Cs and Ca coordination, bond lengths, and polyhedral volumes. Heat capacity measurements reveal a discontinuity at the phase transition, where we use a two-term Debye model to show the presence of two distinct contributions. Under pressure, CsCaCl 3 exhibits phase transitions from cubic to tetragonal to rhombohedral symmetry, which can be understood when comparing the relative compressibilites of the CaCl 6 and CsCl n (where n = 12 for the cubic and 8 for the tetragonal and rhombohedral phases). Overall, this study provides experimentally derived thermodynamic properties and a tentative phase diagram of CsCaCl 3 as a function of pressure and temperature.

Size-Dependent Phase Transition in Perovskite Nanocrystals

Abstract:The complex structure of halide and oxide perovskites strongly affects their physical properties. Here, the effect of dimensions reduced to the nanoscale has been investigated by a combination of single-dot optical experiments with a phase transition theory. Methylammonium lead bromide (CH3NH3PbBr3) nanocrystals with two average particle sizes of ∼2 and ∼4 nm with blue and green photoluminescence, respectively, were spectrally and temporally probed on a single-particle level from 5 to 295 K. The results show that the abrupt blue shift of the photoluminescence spectra and lifetimes at ∼150 K can be attributed to the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition in the large 4 nm nanocrystals, while this phase transition is completely absent for the small 2 nm particles in the investigated temperature range. Theoretical calculations based on Landau theory reveal a strong size-dependent effect on temperature-induced phase transitions in individual CH3NH3PbBr3 nanocrystals, corroborating experimental observations. This effect should be considered in structure-property analysis of ultrasmall perovskite crystals.
Structural phase transitions in perovskite BaCeO3 with data mining and first-principles theoretical calculations

Abstract:Several experiments conducted over decades have revealed that the perovskite-structured BaCeO3 goes through a series of temperature-induced structural phase transitions. However, it has been frequently observed that the number of phases and the sequence in which they appear as a function of temperature differ between experiments. Insofar as neutron diffraction and Raman spectroscopy experiments are concern, four structures are well characterized with three transitions: Pnma to Imma [563 K] to R-3c [673 K] to Pm-3m [1173 K]. In contrast, thermoanalytical methods showed multiple singularities corresponding to at-least three more structural transitions at around 830 K, 900 K, and 1030 K. In account of these conflicting experimental findings, we computed free energy phase diagram for BaCeO3 employing crystal structure data mining in conjunction with first principles electronic structure and phonon lattice dynamics. A total of 34 polymorphs have been predicted, the most stable of which follows the Glazer classification of the perovskite tilt system. It has been predicted that the Cmcm and P4/mbm phases surpass Pnma at 666 K and 1210 K, respectively. At any temperature, two alternate tetragonal phases (P42/nmc and I4/mcm) are also found to be 20 to 30 meV less favored than the Pnma. While the calculated stability order of the predicted polymorphs is in acceptable agreement with the results of neutron diffraction, the transitions observed in thermoanalytical studies could be ascribed to the development of four novel phases (Cmcm, P4/mbm, P42/nmc, and I4/mcm) at intermediate temperatures. However, we analyze that the R-3c phase predominantly stabilized over a broad temperature field, masking all subsequent phases up until the cubic Pm-3m. Consequently, the novel phases predicted to occur in thermoanalytical studies are only fleetingly metastable.

Abstract:Ba2CaMoO6 was synthesized by solid state method. The crystal structure adopts cubic Fm-3m space group at room temperature with lattice parameters of 8.378231(5) {angstroms}. Upon cooling, Ba2CaMoO6 was determined to have a structural phase transition to tetragonal I4/m (a=5.905763(6) {angstroms} and c=8.38817(1) {angstroms}) around 200 K. The phase transition was probed structurally by synchrotron and neutron diffraction and thermodynamically by specific heat and differential scanning calorimetry measurement. This structural phase transition will deepens our understanding of the perovskite family especially the formation of perovskites that break corner sharing networks.

Abstract:Various aspects of the new development of organic-inorganic hybrid [N(CH 3 ) 4 ] 2 MnCl 4 single crystals have been discussed. The phase transition temperatures were determined to be 268 K (T C2 ) and 291 K (T C1 ), and the thermodynamic stability was maintained at temperatures up to 669 K. The crystal structures at 250 K (phase III), 275 K (phase II), and 300 K (phase I) are monoclinic, orthorhombic, and orthorhombic, respectively. Notably, while the 1 H and 13 C chemical shifts gradually changed near T C1 and T C2 , the 14 N resonance frequency exhibited a split in the number of signals near T C1 . Furthermore, the shorter spin-lattice relaxation time T 1ρ of 1 H than that of 13 C suggests facile energy transfer for 1 H. Additionally, analysing the temperature dependencies of T 1ρ for 13 C revealed that the activation energy E a in phase I is approximately five times greater than those in phases III and II. The high E a observed in phase I primarily stems from the collective motion of the N(CH 3 ) 4 group, which contrasts with the considerable freedom observed for the CH 3 group in phases III and II. These distinctive physical properties suggest potential applications for [N(CH 3 ) 4 ] 2 MnCl 4 as an organic‒inorganic hybrid material.

Abstract:By combining temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) with temperature-dependent Raman scattering, we have characterized the structural transitions and lattice dynamics of the hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite CH3NH3PbI3. The XRD measurements cover distinct phases between 15 K and 370 K and demonstrate a general positive thermal expansion. Clear anomalies are found around the transition temperatures. The temperature evolution of the lattice constants reveals that the transition at 160 K/330 K is of the first-/second-order type. Raman measurements uncover three strong low-frequency modes, which can be ascribed to the vibration of the Pb/I atoms. The temperature evolution of the modes clearly catches these transitions at 160 K and 330 K, and confirms the transition types, which are exactly consistent with the XRD results. The present study may set an experimental basis to understand the high conversion efficiency in methylammonium lead iodide.

Abstract:The paraelectric-ferroelectric transition in CdTiO3 has been monitored using high-resolution neutron diffraction data. This necessitated preparing a sample enriched in Cd-114. A subtle, but significant, anisotropy in the thermal expansion of the lattice parameters for CdTiO3 associated with the transition to the polar structure was observed. Growth, structure, phase transition, thermal properties, and structural dynamics of organic–inorganic hybrid [NH3(CH2)5NH3]ZnCl4 crystal

Abstract:In this study, the physicochemical properties of [NH 3 (CH 2 ) 5 NH 3 ]ZnCl 4 crystals were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The crystals at 300 K had a monoclinic structure with C2/c space group and lattice constants are a = 21.4175 Å, b = 7.3574 Å, c = 19.1079 Å, β = 120.5190°, and Z = 8. Three endothermic peaks at 256, 390, and 481 K were observed in the DSC curve. From the single-crystal XRD patterns, powder XRD patterns, and optical microscopy results based on the temperature change, the phase transition and melting temperatures were determined to be 390 and 481 K, respectively. NMR studies indicated no change in 1 H chemical shifts, but a change in the chemical shifts for C2, located between C1 and C3 of the cation at 340 K. Increase in molecular motion caused an increase in the spin–lattice relaxation time, T 1ρ , at low spinning rates, under magic-angle spinning rate conditions. This crystal showed a minor change in the N−H···Cl hydrogen bond, related to the coordination geometry of the ZnCl 4 anion.
