Abstract:A rare disturbance of the stratospheric Antarctic polar vortex in September 2019 led to a significantly higher than usual polar total ozone column. We use assimilation of ozone, HCl, and N2O data from the Microwave Limb Sounder with the Global Earth Observing System (GEOS) Constituent Data Assimilation System driven by reanalysis meteorology to study the evolution of the 2019 Antarctic polar ozone. We find that the maximum 2019 ozone hole area was near 10 × 106 km2, and as little as 20% of that in 2018 in mid‐September. However, the magnitude of vortex‐averaged chemical ozone depletion was not significantly different between the 2 years despite earlier chlorine deactivation in 2019. The assimilation results show that most of the differences between 2018 and 2019 Antarctic ozone resulted from two factors: (1) the geometry of the 2019 vortex, with ozone‐rich middle‐stratospheric air masses overlying the lower portion of the vortex and leading to a significant reduction of the total column, and (2) significantly reduced vortex volume. The anomalously small ozone hole of 2019 was comparable in size to the record breaking 2002 case and the mechanisms responsible were similar in the two cases. While the 2019 sudden stratospheric warming is classified as minor, its impact on ozone was very significant.

Signs of Slowing Recovery of Antarctic Ozone Hole in Recent Late Winter–Early Spring Seasons (2020–2023)

Abstract:Every year since the early 1980s, the ozone hole has appeared in late winter/spring over Antarctica. The ozone hole is expected to disappear due to the observed decrease in the concentration of ozone-depleting substances in the stratosphere, which is enforced by the 1987 Montreal Protocol and its subsequent amendments. However, large ozone holes have appeared four years in a row (2020–2023), which may be a signal that Antarctic ozone repair has stopped. Statistical analyses of ozone hole metrics (hole area, minimum total column ozone, ozone mass deficit, and ozone mass deficit per unit area of the hole) are presented to determine how adding the data from these years changes the ozone recovery pattern. Statistically significant trends in the hole metrics were revealed for the short period (2000–2019) but not for the longer period (2000–2023). The modeled time series of metrics from multiple regressions with standard chemical and dynamic explanatory variables indicate that the recovery has slowed since around 2010. Moreover, a sequence of extreme events (wildfires in Australia in the summer of 2019/2020 and the eruption of the Hunga Tonga volcano in January 2022) may have caused additional ozone losses in Antarctica that masked the repair of polar ozone for a while.

Abstract:We use ground-based spectroscopic remote sensing measurements of the stratospheric trace gases O3, HCl, ClO, BrO, HNO3, NO2, OClO, ClONO2, N2O and HF, along with radiosonde profiles of temperature to track the springtime development of the 2019 ozone hole over Arrival Heights (77.8°S, 166.7°E, AHTS), Antarctica, during, and after, the 2019 stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) event. Both measurements and model simulations show that the 2019 SSW caused an extraordinarily warm stratosphere within the polar vortex, resulting in record low ozone depletion over AHTS. We also contrast the evolution of the 2019 ozone hole to that in 2002, which also had a major springtime SSW event.The SSW event started around 28th August. By ∼17th September, stratospheric temperatures inside the polar vortex over AHTS were ∼45 K higher than the climatological average. The SSW did not cause an en masse displacement of mid-latitude air over AHTS as in the 2002 SSW event. However, the increased temperatures did cause an unusually early reduction in polar stratospheric clouds, halting the denitrification early and leading to increased gas-phase HNO3 and record high levels of NO2 ('renoxification'). This caused the earliest observed deactivation of chlorine, returning all active chlorine into the chlorine reservoir species, HCl and ClONO2. The deactivation rate into HCl remained relatively unaffected by the SSW, whilst there was a dramatic increase in ClONO2 formation. This chlorine deactivation pathway via ClONO2 is typical of the Arctic and atypical for the Antarctic.At AHTS, record high levels of springtime ozone were observed. The measured ozone total column did not drop below 220 DU. Record high stratospheric temperatures persisted until 7th October over AHTS. By 22nd October, AHTS was not beneath the polar vortex. The polar vortex break-up date on 9th November was one of the earliest observed.

Abstract:Abstract The factors responsible for the size of Antarctic ozone hole in November are analyzed. Comparing two samples of anomalously large and small November ozone hole with respect to 1980–2017 climatology in November, the results show that the anomalously large ozone hole in austral late winter is not a precondition for the anomalously large ozone hole in November. The size of Antarctic ozone hole in November is mainly influenced by dynamical processes from the end of October to mid-November. During large November ozone hole events, weaker dynamical ozone transport appears from the end of October to mid-November, which is closely related to planetary wave divergence in the stratosphere between 60°S and 90°S. Further analyses indicate that the wave divergence is partially attributed to less upward propagation of planetary waves from the troposphere, which is associated with weak baroclinic disturbances at the end of October. Subsequently, zonal wind speed in the upper stratosphere intensifies, and the distance between critical layer (U=0) and wave reflecting surfaces becomes larger. As a result, more planetary waves are reflected and then wave divergence enhances. The processes responsible for the anomalously small Antarctic ozone holes in November are almost opposite to those for the anomalously large Antarctic ozone holes.

Abstract:Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) measurements show that chemical processing was critical to the observed record‐low Arctic stratospheric ozone in spring 2020. The 16‐year MLS record indicates more polar denitrification and dehydration in 2019/2020 than in any Arctic winter except 2015/2016. Chlorine activation and ozone depletion began earlier than in any previously observed winter, with evidence of chemical ozone loss starting in November. Active chlorine then persisted as late into spring as it did in 2011. Empirical estimates suggest maximum chemical ozone losses near 2.8 ppmv by late March in both 2011 and 2020. However, peak chlorine activation, and thus peak ozone loss, occurred at lower altitudes in 2020 than in 2011, leading to the lowest Arctic ozone values ever observed at potential temperature levels from ~400—480 K, with similar ozone values to those in 2011 at higher levels.

Abstract:Abstract. Balloon-borne ozonesondes launched weekly from South Pole Station (1986–2021) measure high-vertical-resolution profiles of ozone and temperature from the surface to 30–35 km altitude. The launch frequency is increased in late winter before the onset of rapid stratospheric ozone loss in September. Ozone hole metrics show that the yearly total column ozone and 14–21 km partial column ozone minimum values and September loss rate trends have been improving (less severe) since 2001. The 36-year record also shows interannual variability, especially in recent years (2019–2021). Here we show additional details of these 3 years by comparing annual minimum profiles observed on the date when the lowest integrated total column ozone occurs. We also compare the July–December time series of the 14–21 km partial column ozone values to the 36-year median with percentile intervals. The 2019 anomalous vortex breakdown showed stratospheric temperatures began warming in early September followed by reduced ozone loss. The minimum total column ozone of 180 Dobson units (DU) was observed on 24 September. This was followed by two stable and cold polar vortex years during 2020 and 2021 with total column ozone minimums at 104 DU (1 October) and 102 DU (7 October), respectively. These years also showed broad near-zero-ozone (loss saturation) regions within the 14–21 km layer by the end of September which persisted into October. Validation of the ozonesonde observations is conducted through the ongoing comparison of total column ozone measurements with the South Pole ground-based Dobson spectrophotometer. The ozonesondes show a more positive bias of 2 ± 3 % (higher) than the Dobson following a thorough evaluation and homogenization of the long-term ozonesonde record completed in 2018.

Abstract:The annual formation of an ozone hole in the austral spring has regional and global climate implications. The Antarctic ozone hole has already changed the precipitation, temperature and atmospheric circulation patterns, and thus the surface climate of many regions in the Southern Hemisphere (SH). Therefore, the study of ozone loss variability is important to assess its consequential effects on the climate and public health. Our study uses satellite observations from the Microwave Limb Sounder on Aura and the passive-tracer method to quantify the ozone loss for the past 8 years (2013–2020) in the Antarctic. We observe the highest ozone loss (about 3.5 ppmv) in 2020, owing to the high chlorine activation (about 2.2 ppbv), steady polar vortex, and huge expanses of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) ( 12.6×10 6 km 2 ) in the winter. The spring of 2019 also showed a high ozone loss, although the year had a rare minor warming in mid-September. The chlorine activation in 2015 (1.9 ppbv) was the weakest, and the wave forcing from the lower latitudes was very high in 2017 (up to − 60 km s −1 ). The analysis shows significant interannual variability in the Antarctic ozone as compared to the immediate previous decade (2000–2010). The study helps to understand the role of dynamics and chemistry in the interannual variability of ozone depletion over the years.

Abstract:To celebrate its 150 anniversary, Nature collected 10 extraordinary papers published on Nature in November, 2019. One of the papers is on the discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole, which was published by three British scientists, Joe C. Farman, Brian G. Gardiner, and Jonathan D. Shanklin, in 1985. They first showed observational evidence that Antarctic stratospheric ozone experienced drastic decrease in the early 1980s, by contrasting to the relative steady state in the 1970s. They also suggested that the ozone hole is due to human-made chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Nature invited Susan Solomon, who made outstanding contributions to our understanding of the ozone hole, to comment on the paper. She pointed out that "The unexpected discovery of a hole in the atmospheric ozone layer over the Antarctic revolutionized science-and helped to establish one of the most successful global environmental policies of the twentieth century."The observational evidence by Farman et al. greatly confirmed earlier theoretical works by P. Cruzen, M. Molina, and F. Rowland who first emphasized in the 1970s that anthropogenic emissions of nitrogen oxides and CFCs would damage the ozone layer. Their observational confirmation led to the winning of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry by Cruzen, Molina, and Rowland in 1995.The discovery of the ozone hole also led to great international actions in reducing CFCs emissions and protecting the ozone layer, which is crucially important for screening solar ultraviolet radiation for surface life. A series of conventions has been organized by the United Nations, and the most successful one is the 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The Montreal Protocol and the succeeding amendments, adjustments, and decisions were subsequently negotiated to control the consumption and production of anthropogenic emissions of ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) and some hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Since then, ODSs emissions have been largely reduced and showed rapid decrease since the early 1990s. The global ozone layer and the ozone hole over Antarctic all have showed gradual increasing since the late 1990s. According to predictions of climate-chemistry models, the global total column ozone will return to its 1980 values by 2045 when ODSs decline to very low levels, and the Antarctic ozone hole will recover by 2060. The gradual recovery of the ozone hole, due to reducing anthropogenic emissions, from severe depletion also due to human emissions, is considered a successful story that human can protect their environment through self-efforts. It provides us with the confidence that we are able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to solve the problem of global greenhouse warming.In the present paper, we will first introduce the discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole by Farman et al. Then, we introduce the chemical mechanisms of the Chapman and the catalytic reactions that result in the formation of the ozone layer, and how anthropogenic perturbations caused the Antarctic ozone hole. We shall also introduce the actions that was taken by international communities to protect the ozone layer. In the final section, we point out the important implications of the discovery of the ozone hole.
Observation of large and all-season ozone losses over the tropics

Abstract:This paper reveals a large and all-season ozone hole in the lower stratosphere over the tropics (30degN-30degS) since the 1980s, where an O3 hole is defined as an area of O3 loss larger than 25% compared with the undisturbed atmosphere. The depth of this tropical O3 hole is comparable to that of the well-known springtime Antarctic O3 hole, whereas its area is about seven times that of the latter. Similar to the Antarctic O3 hole, approximately 80% of the normal O3 value is depleted at the center of the tropical O3 hole. The results strongly indicate that both Antarctic and tropical O3 holes must arise from an identical physical mechanism, for which the cosmic-ray-driven electron reaction (CRE) model shows good agreements with observations. The whole-year large tropical O3 hole could cause a serious global concern as it can lead to increases in ground-level ultraviolet radiation and affect 50% of Earth's surface area, home to approximately 50% of the world's population. Moreover, the presence of the tropical and polar O3 holes is equivalent to the formation of three 'temperature holes' observed in the stratosphere. These findings will have significances in understanding planetary physics, ozone depletion, climate change, and human health.

Abstract:NASA satellite measurements show that ozone reductions throughout the Northern Hemisphere (NH) free troposphere reported for spring-summer 2020 during the COronaVIrus Disease 2019 pandemic have occurred again in spring-summer 2021. The satellite measurements show that tropospheric column ozone (TCO) (mostly representative of the free troposphere) for 20°N-60°N during spring-summer for both 2020 and 2021 averaged ∼3 Dobson Units (DU) (or ∼7%-8%) below normal. These ozone reductions in 2020 and 2021 were the lowest in the 2005-2021 record. We also include satellite measurements of tropospheric NO2 that exhibit reductions of ∼10%-20% in the NH in early spring-to-summer 2020 and 2021, suggesting that reduced pollution was the main cause for the low anomalies in NH TCO in 2020 and 2021. Reductions of TCO ∼2 DU (7%) are also measured in the Southern Hemisphere in austral summer but are not associated with reduced NO2.

Abstract:Stratospheric ozone is an important constituent of the atmosphere. Significant changes in its concentrations have great consequences for the environment in general and for ecosystems in particular. Here, we analyse ground-based, ozonesonde and satellite ozone measurements to examine the ozone depletion and the spatiotemporal trends in ozone in the tropics during the past 5 decades (1980–2020). The amount of column ozone in the tropics is relatively small (250–270 DU) compared to high and mid-latitudes (Northern Hemisphere (NH) 275–425 DU; Southern Hemisphere (SH) 275–350 DU). In addition, the tropical total ozone trend is very small ( ± 0–0.2 DU yr −1 ), as estimated for the period 1998–2022. No observational evidence is found regarding the indications or signatures of severe stratospheric ozone depletion in the tropics in contrast to a recent claim. Finally, current understanding and observational evidence do not provide any support for the possibility of an ozone hole occurring outside Antarctica today with respect to the present-day stratospheric halogen levels.

Extremely Cold and Persistent Stratospheric Arctic Vortex in the Winter of 2010–2011

Abstract:Record ozone loss was observed in the stratospheric Arctic in the spring of 2011. In the present work, we show observational evidence that the record loss of Arctic ozone is due to the extremely cold and persistent stratospheric polar vortex in the winter of 2010–2011. The polar vortex was as usual in early winter, but was intensified twice in middle January and middle February, respectively, and remained anomalously strong and stable until early April, 2011. Record low polar temperatures and record high subpolar zonal winds occurred in February and March. Stratospheric wave activity was anomalously weak because waves were refracted equatorward by the anomalously strong polar night jet. With such an extremely cold and isolated environment, Arctic stratospheric ozone was largely depleted in March and early April, 2011. Corresponding to Arctic ozone depletion, the stratospheric Northern-Hemisphere Annular Mode (NAM) displayed anomalously strong high-polarity, and the positive stratospheric NAM propagated downward and led to anomalously strong positive NAM in the troposphere and near the surface.

Abstract:Large reductions in O3 observed in recent years over Antarctica in spring are the consequence of catalytic reactions involving industrially related radicals of chlorine and bromine. About 75% of the loss observed in 1987 was due to the ClO dimer scheme proposed by Molina and Molina (1987, J. phys. Chem. 91, 433) with the balance associated with the ClO-BrO mechanism introduced by McElroy et al. (1986, Nature 321, 759). The magnitude of O3 loss is sensitive to the extent of denitrification, the efficiency with which HNO3 is removed from the stratosphere by precipitation in particulate form. It depends also, according to present understanding, on the relative abundances of ClNO3 and HCl in air trapped originally in the polar vortex in late fall or early winter. High concentrations of ClO and BrO were observed also in the Arctic stratosphere during January and early February of 1989. It is estimated that about 10% of O3 contained in the Arctic stratosphere between about 16 and 20 km was lost during the winter of 1989. The extent of denitrification and the persistence of the vortex are the key factors influencing the magnitude of O3 loss in the north. It is shown, based on analysis of data from the Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy experiment for early May 1985 at 47-degrees-S (Farmer et al., 1987, JPL Publication 87-32, JPL, Pasadena, CA), that heterogeneous chemistry (specifically the reaction of N2O5 with H2O on sulfuric acid droplets) can have an influence also on the composition of the mid-latitude stratosphere. Implications for midlatitude O3 of consequent changes in the concentrations of nitrogen, hydrogen and halogen radicals are discussed. It is suggested that changes in the abundance of O3 in the lower stratosphere in the tropics can have implications also for climate. The relatively warm climates of the Eocene and Cretaceous and the cold climates of recent glacial epochs may be associated with shallower and deeper stratospheres, respectively, with related expansion and contraction of the symmetric (Hadley) circulation. Changes in lower stratospheric O3 may be related to variations in stratospheric circulation corresponding to differing levels of CO2, with additional contributions for the contemporary environment due to elevated levels of industrial chlorine and bromine.
Australian wildfire smoke in the stratosphere: the decay phase in 2020/21 and impact on ozone depletion

Abstract:Abstract. Record-breaking wildfires raged in southeastern Australia in late December 2019 and early January 2020. Rather strong pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) convection developed over the fire areas and lifted enormous amounts of biomass-burning smoke into the tropopause region and caused the strongest wildfire-related stratospheric aerosol perturbation ever observed around the globe. We discuss the geometrical, optical, and microphyscial properties of the stratospheric smoke layers and the decay of this major stratospheric perturbation. A multiwavelength polarization Raman lidar at Punta Arenas (53.2° S, 70.9° W), southern Chile, and an elastic-backscatter Raman lidar at Río Grande (53.8° S, 67.7° W) in southern Argentina were operated to monitor the major record-breaking event until the end of 2021. These lidar measurements can be regarded as representative for mid to high latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere. A unique dynamical feature, an anticyclonic, smoke-filled vortex with 1000 km horizontal width and 5 km vertical extent, which ascended by about 500 m per day, was observed over the full last week of January 2020. The key results of the long-term study are as follows: The smoke layers extended, on average, from 9 to 24 km in height. The smoke partly ascended to more than 30 km height as a result of self-lifting processes. Clear signs of a smoke impact on the record-breaking ozone hole over Antarctica in September–November 2020 were found. A slow decay of the stratospheric perturbation detected by means of the 532 nm aerosol optical thickness (AOT) yielded an e-folding decay time of 19–20 months. The maximum smoke AOT was around 1.0 over Punta Arenas in January 2020 and thus two to three orders of magnitude above the stratospheric aerosol background of 0.005. After two months with strongly varying smoke conditions, the 532 nm AOT decreased to 0.03–0.06 from March–December 2020 and to 0.015–0.03 throughout 2021. The particle extinction coefficients were in the range of 10–75 Mm−1 in January 2020, and later on mostly between 1 and 5 Mm−1. Combined lidar-photometer retrievals revealed typical smoke extinction-to-backscatter ratios of 69 ±19 sr (at 355 nm), 91 ± 17 sr (at 532 nm), and 120 ± 22 sr (at 1064 nm). An ozone reduction of 20–25 % in the 15–22 km height range was observed over Antarctic and New Zealand ozonesonde stations in the smoke-polluted air with particle surface area concentrations of 1–5 μm2 cm−3.

Abstract:Abstract We use height‐resolved and total column satellite observations and 3‐D chemical transport model simulations to study stratospheric ozone variations during 1998–2017 as ozone‐depleting substances decline. In 2017 extrapolar lower stratospheric ozone displayed a strong positive anomaly following much lower values in 2016. This points to large interannual variability rather than an ongoing downward trend, as reported recently by Ball et al. (2018, https://doi.org/10.5194/acp‐18‐1379‐2018 ). The observed ozone variations are well captured by the chemical transport model throughout the stratosphere and are largely driven by meteorology. Model sensitivity experiments show that the contribution of past trends in short‐lived chlorine species to the ozone changes is small. Similarly, the potential impact of modest trends in natural brominated short‐lived species is small. These results confirm the important role that atmospheric dynamics plays in controlling ozone in the extrapolar lower stratosphere on multiannual time scales and the continued importance of monitoring ozone profiles as the stratosphere changes.

Abstract:Record ozone loss was observed in the Arctic stratosphere in spring 2020. This study aims to determine what caused the extreme Arctic ozone loss. Observations and simulation results are examined in order to show that the extreme Arctic ozone loss was likely caused by record-high sea surface temperatures(SSTs) in the North Pacific. It is found that the record Arctic ozone loss was associated with the extremely cold and persistent stratospheric polar vortex over February–April, and the extremely cold vortex was a result of anomalously weak planetary wave activity. Further analysis reveals that the weak wave activity can be traced to anomalously warm SSTs in the North Pacific. Both observations and simulations show that warm SST anomalies in the North Pacific could have caused the weakening of wavenumber-1 wave activity, colder Arctic vortex, and lower Arctic ozone. These results suggest that for the present-day level of ozone-depleting substances, severe Arctic ozone loss could form again, as long as certain dynamic conditions are satisfied.

Abstract:The characteristic features and mechanisms of the formation of a deep ozone mini-hole (OMH) in winter 2015/2016 over Siberia were carried out using AIRS and CALIOP satellite data. The depletion in the total column ozone was caused mainly by a strong decrease in ozone mixing ratio in the lower stratosphere, reaching 50% near the pressure level of 70 hPa. The formation of OMH was closely related to the dynamic factors including an increase in the tropopause height and advection in the troposphere of ozone-depleted subtropical air, which were associated with atmospheric blocking. Also, an important factor of OMH formation was ozone decrease in the stratosphere due to increased outflow of ozone from the area of the OMH. The contribution of chemical destruction of stratospheric ozone, due to catalytic reactions with halogen-containing compounds on the surface of polar stratospheric clouds to the OMH formation, was evaluated.

Abstract:We examine the zonal wavenumber spectrum of planetary (Rossby) waves in the atmosphere above Antarctica in each of two contrasting years: in 2019, when there was a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW), and in 2020 when the Antarctic stratospheric vortex was unusually strong and long-lived. The ozone hole (OH) is developed over Antarctica in spring, and its state depends on disturbances of the stratospheric polar vortex by planetary waves (PW). Our analysis uses data on the distribution of the total ozone column from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument on the Aura satellite and ground-based measurements from the Dobson spectrophotometer at the Ukrainian Antarctic Akademik Vernadsky station in Antarctica. The 2019 SSW strongly displaced the Antarctic vortex off-pole and aided the breakdown of the ozone hole. The SSW occurred during the peak activity of quasi-stationary planetary wave-1, which was enhanced at the time of the warming by the large amplitude of traveling wave-2. In the spring of 2020, the stratospheric polar vortex was relatively undisturbed, allowing the OH area to attain a size close to its historical maximum. A factor in 2020 that aided the stability of the vortex was the relatively small amplitude of wave-1. The stability was maintained despite regular periods when the amplitude of traveling wave-2 attained or even exceeded values around the time of the SSW in 2019. We find that a factor contributing to the differences between the wave effects in the two years is the dynamics of the quasi-stationary wave-1. Anticorrelation of the wave-1 and wave-2 amplitudes near the edge of the vortex was clearly observed in 2020, which can be caused by the transfer of planetary wave energy between different spectral wave components, unlike the situation in 2019.

Abstract:Observations of March 2024 Arctic (63°N–90°N) total column ozone set a record high of 477 Dobson Units (DU) against the 1979–2023 satellite era time series. It was about 60 DU higher than average and 6 DU higher than the previous March 1979 471 DU record. Daily Arctic ozone was above average for every day in March 2024, and set record highs from 11–26 March 2024. Microwave Limb Sounder data show this record ozone anomaly was concentrated in the lower stratosphere (10–30 km). These record values developed over the 2023–2024 winter and can be associated with vertically propagating planetary‐scale wave events that caused significant stratospheric warmings. These wave events forced poleward and downward ozone advection into the lower stratosphere, leading to record column ozone levels. The above average levels persisted through August 2024 and across the northern hemisphere.

Abstract:Abstract. A record-breaking stratospheric ozone loss was observed over the Arctic and Antarctica in 2020. Strong ozone depletion occurred over Antarctica in 2021 as well. The ozone holes developed in smoke-polluted air. In this article, the impact of Siberian and Australian wildfire smoke (dominated by organic aerosol) on the extraordinarily strong ozone reduction is discussed. The study is based on aerosol lidar observations in the North Pole region (October 2019–May 2020) and over Punta Arenas in southern Chile at 53.2∘ S (January 2020–November 2021) as well as on respective NDACC (Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change) ozone profile observations in the Arctic (Ny-Ålesund) and Antarctica (Neumayer and South Pole stations) in 2020 and 2021. We present a conceptual approach on how the smoke may have influenced the formation of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs), which are of key importance in the ozone-depleting processes. The main results are as follows: (a) the direct impact of wildfire smoke below the PSC height range (at 10–12 km) on ozone reduction seems to be similar to well-known volcanic sulfate aerosol effects. At heights of 10–12 km, smoke particle surface area (SA) concentrations of 5–7 μm2 cm−3 (Antarctica, spring 2021) and 6–10 μm2 cm−3 (Arctic, spring 2020) were correlated with an ozone reduction in terms of ozone partial pressure of 0.4–1.2 mPa (about 30 % further ozone reduction over Antarctica) and of 2–3.5 mPa (Arctic, 20 %–30 % reduction with respect to the long-term springtime mean). (b) Within the PSC height range, we found indications that smoke was able to slightly increase the PSC particle number and surface area concentration. In particular, a smoke-related additional ozone loss of 1–2 mPa (10 %–20 % contribution to the total ozone loss over Antarctica) was observed in the 14–23 km PSC height range in September–October 2020 and 2021. Smoke particle number concentrations ranged from 10 to 100 cm−3 and were about a factor of 10 (in 2020) and 5 (in 2021) above the stratospheric aerosol background level. Satellite observations indicated an additional mean column ozone loss (deviation from the long-term mean) of 26–30 Dobson units (9 %–10 %, September 2020, 2021) and 52–57 Dobson units (17 %–20 %, October 2020, 2021) in the smoke-polluted latitudinal Antarctic belt from 70–80∘ S.
