Abstract:Meticulous figure painting is a traditional Chinese art form in which objects are depicted with fine details. Coloring objects in meticulous figure painting by hand is however tedious and time consuming. This paper presents a rendering algorithm to speed up this coloring process and the resulting renders still retain the style of Chinese meticulous figure paintings. We first extract the contour line and obtain regions for the face, hair, limbs and clothes of painted figures interactively. For the face region, we add simple auxiliary lines interactively to specify the light and dark areas, and then use a simple iterative dampened-spring dif-fuser to generate the gray scale shading of the whole area. For the regions of limbs and clothes, an automatic method is proposed to render their shadings. For the hair region, we take the hand drawn hair lines as the high frequency components, and then smooth it with a Gaussian filter to obtain the low frequency compo-nents, and blend them to get the final rendered hair. For other small parts such as headwear, we process them with simple interactions. Compared with hand painted art works, our rendering results look satisfactory.

It can not only help the painter to depict the image characteristics of the object, but also vividly convey the painter's emotional attitude, spiritual pursuit and aesthetic realm. Therefore, the "line" in Chinese painting often has unique aesthetic requirements, which is also the decision It can well show the important conditions of object modeling, level, texture and sense of space. Looking at the lines of Chinese paintings in the past dynasties, their forms are diverse and varied. Lines of different shapes can show their unique emotional thoughts and aesthetic interests. In order to better understand the emotional thoughts of Chinese painting lines, it is necessary to deeply analyze and explore their aesthetic expressions and aesthetic interests. Lines,the two-dimensional space,cross two-dimensional limitations in Chinese land-scape painting and indicate the true landscape. To understand the lines in Chinese landscape,needs to ex-plore the surpass restriction of lines on cultural and psychological values from the perspective of Chinese tra-ditional philosophical view and space shown by Chinese landscape paintings. Abstract:In this paper, the authors describe the principles of Straight Line Strokes illustration, present the mathematical model of the principles, and show how a great number of lines can be implemented as main part of an automated drawing system named Line-Art . Different from traditional drawing art, Line-Art generates pictures without curves, colors, ink marks, brushes, and oil paint, but only with Straight Line Strokes. Generated pictures are composed, clipped, and plotted. The paper also introduces how to use the initial value problem of the ordinary differential equation to describe a drawing art, e.g. Line-Art.

Abstract:The foundation of modeling by means of lines was laid during the period from pre-Qin to the Han Dynasty.During the period from Wei and Jin Dynasties to the Northern and Southern Dynasties,it developed from sketchy modeling to meticulous modeling,laying stress on the vividness and the psychological description of the figure,and on the pursuit of artistic conception.Techniques tended to mature.Styles were various.The modeling of figures during the Sui Dynasty,the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties was full of the characteristics of the times,presenting a style of figure portraying.Techniques attained a high degree of perfection.In the Northern Song and Southern Song Dynasties,the traditional ink and brush line-drawing became the unique style.But during the Yuan,Ming and Qing Dynasties,because of the appearance of paintings by scholars and officials,such a style of painting was discriminated against and deliberately underestimated and as a result was falling into decay.Not until the middle of the 20th century,the meticulous drawing of figures began to develop and became prosperous.

Abstract:As a traditional Chinese art, the tools of Chinese ink painting are mainly brushes, ink, and rice paper and ink stone. As an important form of ink painting, ink landscape painting consists of ink lines that first outline the overall trend of the mountain and then complete the basic process of painting with rich chapping techniques. The article proposes a process to draw water animation based on Chinese painting style; this method first perceives the position of water form in Chinese painting and enhances it by morphological structural elements used to automatically draw the line feature analysis of ink painting; next, the image rendering technique is used to render the water form, firstly using BF for noise removal processing and then gradienting by Canny edge detection operator to get the gradient amplitude. Next, morphological optimization is applied, and finally the image is visualized. In the process of morphological optimization, the optimal parameters of the structural elements are found through the threshold segmentation number, and the rendering algorithm for ink-based landscape painting is explored in depth, starting from the ink lines. The results reveal that the method is more accurate than typical marker-watershed algorithm segmentation, and that changing different structural elements and their parameters has a bigger impact on the ink painting drawing effect.

Abstract:Published by the IEEE Computer Society 0018-9162/11/$26.00 © 2011 IEEE TRADITIONAL LINE DRAWING Archaeologists use several approaches to manually render line drawings of objects and scenes, including the grid method, as Figure 1b shows.2 The draftsman determines a coordinate system, measures the positions of convex and concave feature points using rulers, and records these measurements on millimeter paper at a specific scale. The final step is to connect the recorded feature points to form a smooth line drawing. Measuring and drafting is time consuming and, because archaeological reports often require multiple drawings for a given site, can necessitate much fieldwork. Low accuracy is another drawback of manual line drawing: the limitations of human vision can cause significant measurement errors, especially for large-scale scenes. The draftsman’s experience and qualifications also greatly influence the quality of drawings. In addition, due to erosion or weathering, many carved objects have a mottled texture that obscures their original appearance.
From Art to Cure: The Three Stages of Theoretical Development of Ancient Chinese Painting from Pre-Qin to Qing Dynasty

Abstract:Ancient Chinese paintings, compared with traditional Western oil paintings that featured realistic depiction, seem mysterious enough to go beyond comprehension to Westerners. It could be traced back to one of the fundamental divergences in history when ancient Chinese painters and critics took a path not taken by their Western counterparts at the theoretical development crossroad over a thousand years ago: the former started to strive not for realistic drawing skills improvement but for the spiritual connection between the object and the painting. In the theoretical development of ancient Chinese painting, it marks the critical turning point from the first imitation stage of pursuing xingsi (formal likeness) to the intermediate second stage of seeking shensi (spiritual resemblance); and eventually in its third stage, painting became a constitutional part of Chinese ancients' lifestyle when it switched for a breakthrough from figure painting to landscape painting that laid more emphasis on subjective xieyi (intent-expression) which, by taking on a form of catharsis, played an extremely important role in the life of ancient painters and painting-lovers. That is when painting was endowed with a new function of more realistic importance: it was viewed by ancient Chinese as something more than art but therapeutic as a cure to relieve their miseries and pains by way of self-expression or aesthetic resonances. Imbibing the Taoist philosophy renowned for its profound effect on health preserving, specifically its aesthetic and contemplative attitude towards life advocated by Zhuangzi, these ancient Chinese painters and their audience sought xieyi and all-pervading oneness by blending themselves with the universe to find their own spiritual healing power.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese painting (TCP) is an invaluable cultural heritage resource and a unique visual art style. In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on the digitalization of TCP for cultural preservation and revitalization. The resulting digital copies have enabled the advancement of computational methods for a structured and systematic understanding of TCP. To explore this topic, we conduct an in-depth analysis of 94 pieces of literature. We examine the current use of computer technologies on TCP from three perspectives, based on numerous conversations with specialists. First, in light of the "Six Principles of Painting" theory, we categorize the articles according to their research focus on artistic elements. Second, we create a four-stage framework to illustrate the purposes of TCP applications. Third, we summarize the popular computational techniques applied to TCP. This work also provides insights into potential applications and prospects, with professional opinion.

Abstract:This article introduces the aesthetic significance of Chinese calligraphy, one of the highest art forms in China. It focuses on three major aesthetic concerns manifested in classical texts on this art. First, Chinese art theory stresses that the forms (xing) of successful calligraphic works are never static; rather, they should be filled with internal force (shi). Second, calligraphic creation can be understood as a psychosomatic process, that is, involving coordination between the mind and the hand. Third, appreciation of Chinese calligraphy is identified with the process of reconstructing the calligrapher's creation of the work, which is analogous to Richard Wollheim's identifying criticism as retrieval. The last section examines the concept of qi and discusses what kind of aesthetic considerations encourage us to make a connection between Chinese calligraphy and abstract art.
