Abstract:Assembling two-dimensional (2D) materials by polyelectrolyte often suffers from inhomogeneous microstructures due to the conventional mixing-and-simultaneous-complexation procedure ("mix-and-complex") in aqueous solution. Herein a "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept via on-demand in situ cascade anionization and ionic complexation of 2D materials is raised that drastically improves structural order in 2D assemblies, as exemplified by classical graphene oxide (GO)-based ultrathin membranes. Specifically, in dimethyl sulfoxide, the carboxylic acid-functionalized GO sheets (COOH–GOs) were mixed evenly with a cationic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and upon filtration formed a well-ordered layered composite membrane with homogeneous distribution of PIL chains in it; next, whenever needed, it was alkali-treated to convert COOH–GO in situ into its anionized state COO––GO that immediately complexed ionically with the surrounding cationic PIL chains. This "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept separates the ionic complexation of GO and polyelectrolytes from their mixing step. By synergistically combining the PIL-induced hydrophobic confinement effect and supramolecular interactions, the as-fabricated nanofiltration membranes carry interface transport nanochannels between GO and PIL, reaching a high water permeability of 96.38 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 at a maintained excellent dye rejection 99.79% for 150 h, exceeding the state-of-the-art GO-based hybrid membranes. The molecular dynamics simulations support the experimental data, confirming the interface spacing between GO and PIL as the water transport channels.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Layered two-dimensional materials can potentially be utilized for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane fabrication owing to their precise molecular sieving by the interlayer structure and excellent stability in harsh conditions. Nevertheless, the extensive tortuosity of nanochannels and bulky solvent molecules impede rapid permeability. Herein, nanoporous graphene (NG) with a high density of sp 2 carbon domain was synthesized via sequential thermal pore activation of graphene oxide (GO) and microwave-assisted reduction. Due to the smooth sp 2 carbon domain surfaces and dense nanopores, the microwave-treated nanoporous graphene membrane exhibited ultrafast organic solvent permeance (e.g., IPA: 2278 LMH/bar) with excellent stability under practical cross-flow conditions. Furthermore, the membrane molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) is switchable from 500 Da size of molecule to sub-nanometer-size molecules depending on the solvent type, and this switching occurs spontaneously with solvent change. These properties indicate feasibility of multiple (both binary and ternary) organic mixture separation using a single membrane. The nanochannel structure effect on solvent transport is also investigated using computation calculations.

Abstract:Nanostructured graphene-oxide (GO) laminate membranes, exhibiting ultrahigh water flux, are excellent candidates for next generation nanofiltration and desalination membranes, provided the ionic rejection could be further increased without compromising the water flux. Using microscopic drift-diffusion experiments, we demonstrated the ultrahigh charge selectivity for GO membranes, with more than order of magnitude difference in the permeabilities of cationic and anionic species of equivalent hydration radii. Measuring diffusion of a wide range of ions of different size and charge, we were able to clearly disentangle different physical mechanisms contributing to the ionic sieving in GO membranes: electrostatic repulsion between ions and charged chemical groups; and the compression of the ionic hydration shell within the membrane's nanochannels, following the activated behavior. The charge-selectivity allows us to rationally design membranes with increased ionic rejection and opens up the field of ion exchange and electrodialysis to the GO membranes.

Abstract:The preparation of atom-thick porous lattice hosting Å-scale pores is attractive to achieve a large ion-ion selectivity in combination with a large ion flux. Graphene film is an ideal selective layer for this if high-precision pores can be incorporated, however, it is challenging to avoid larger non-selective pores at the tail-end of the pore size distribution which reduces ion-ion selectivity. Herein, we develop a strategy to overcome this challenge using an electrochemical repair strategy that successfully masks larger pores in large-area graphene. 10-nm-thick electropolymerized conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) layer is successfully deposited on graphene, thanks to a strong π-π interaction in these two materials. While the CMP layer itself is not selective, it effectively masks graphene pores, leading to a large Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity from zero-dimensional pores reaching 300 with a high Li + ion permeation rate surpassing the performance of reported materials for ion-ion separation. Overall, this scalable repair strategy enables the fabrication of monolayer graphene membranes with customizable pore sizes, limiting the contribution of nonselective pores, and offering graphene membranes a versatile platform for a broad spectrum of challenging separations.

Abstract:Ion sieving is significantly important in many fields such as life science, resource utilization, and environmental protection. However, unlike biological ion channels, realizing efficient ion sieving using two-dimensional (2D) membranes with artificial ion channels is severely restrained because of swelling. In this work, we demonstrated that graphene oxide membranes (GOMs) with the interlayer spacings controlled by K+ (K-GOMs) provide a remarkably enhanced ion sieving performance in mono-/multi-valent mixed ion systems, in which ion selectivity is more than 1 order of magnitude than that of untreated GOMs. The highest selectivity of Na+/Fe3+ for K-GOMs reached up to 159.1, which is superior to most of the state-of the art NF or 2D membranes, and the competitive permeation rate of Na+ ions still remained at 0.48 mol m–2 h–1. Additionally, the K-GOMs also showed an outstanding stability in the long-term test. Further, the K-GOMs also presented high selectivity for multi-valent/multi-valent mixed ion systems. Overall, this study gives a full picture of the excellent performance of K-GOMs based on the size effect for ion sieving and exhibits great value in real-world applications such as desalination, water treatment, battery, and even in life science.

Abstract:Ca2+/Na+ separation is a common problem in industrial applications, biological and medical fields. However, Ca2+ and Na+ have similar ionic radii and hydration radii, thus Ca2+/Na+ separation is challenging. Inspired by biological channels, group modification is one of the effective methods to improve the separation performance. In this work, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the effects of different functional groups (COO−, NH3 +) on the separation performance of Ca2+ and Na+ through graphene nanopores under an electric field. The pristine graphene nanopore was used for comparison. Results showed that three types of nanopores preferred Ca2+ to Na+, and Ca2+/Na+ selectivity followed the order of GE-COO− (4.06) > GE (1.85) > GE-NH3 + (1.63). Detailed analysis of ionic hydration microstructure shows that different nanopores result in different hydration factors for the second hydration layer of Ca2+ and the first layer of Na+. Such different hydration factors corresponding to the dehydration ability can effectively evaluate the separation performance. In addition, the breaking of hydrogen bonds between water molecules due to electrostatic effects can directly affect the dehydration ability. Therefore, the electrostatic effect generated by group modification will affect the ionic hydration microstructure, thus reflecting the differences in dehydration ability. This in turn affects the permeable and separation performance of cations. The results of this work provide perceptive guidelines for the application of graphene-based membranes in ion separation.

Abstract:Recently, graphene oxide (GO) membranes have been reported with the ability to separate different solutes in aqueous suspensions by a molecular sieving effect. On the other hand, we propose that the chemical interactions between ions and GO membranes might also take effect in selective ion transmembrane transportation. In this paper, on the basis of the permeation of Cu2+ and Mg2+ sources through hydroxyl-, carboxyl-, and amino-functionalized graphene membranes, the delicate ion graphene interactions which might be responsible for the selective ion permeation are investigated. We demonstrate experimentally that the coordination between transition-metal cations and carboxyl fiinctionalities and the cation-pi interactions between main-group cations and sp(2) regions are responsible for the selective transport of small ions through graphene-based membranes, which is beyond the scope of molecular sieving effect proposed previously. Notably, by grafting amino groups onto the graphene basal planes, the permeations of Cu2+ and Mg2+ cations are both weakened. These results not only throw light upon the mechanism for the selective ion permeation through graphene-based membranes but also lay a foundation for the separation of target ions by grafting specific functionalities.

Abstract:<p>Graphene oxide (GO) membranes with unique sieving channels composing of galleries in stacked GO nanosheets, are promising for advanced separations towards environmental and energy remediation. Although GO membranes can be bridged by molecules to enhance the stability as well as separation capacity, the subtle alterations of GO stacking and the resulting changes of sieving channel structures induced by molecular intercalation failed to be delicately revealed. Herein, molecular intercalations are employed to generate spatial confinement on GO assembling and thus the structures of sieving channels are regulated. Moreover, different-sized intercalants are demonstrated display significant effects on GO stacking. Small-sized molecules facilitate in-plane orientation while large-sized molecules are inclined to inhibit the overlap, leading to a lower degree of alignment and a shorter transmembrane pathway and eventually a higher permeability. On this basis, the deliberately nanostructured GO membrane with both the superior robustness even under ultrasonication and an ultrafast water permeance surpassing 5 times than pristine GO membrane, is built by intercalation with optimal-sized molecules. This study provides the practical insights on realizing 2D GO material for cutting-edge separations.</p>

Abstract:Two-dimensional graphene oxide (GO) membranes are gaining popularity as a promising means to address global water scarcity. However, current GO membranes fail to sufficiently exclude angstrom-sized ions from solution. Herein, a de novo "posterior" interfacial polymerization (p-IP) strategy is reported to construct a tailor-made polyamide (PA) network in situ in an ultrathin GO membrane to strengthen size exclusion while imparting a positively charged membrane surface to repel metal ions. The electrostatic repulsion toward metal ions, coupled with the reinforced size exclusion, synergistically drives the high-efficiency metal ion separation through the synthesized positively charged GO framework (PC-GOF) membrane. This dual-mechanism-driven PC-GOF membrane exhibits superior metal ion rejection, anti-fouling ability, good operational stability, and ultra-high permeance (five times that of pristine GO membranes), enabling a sound step towards a sustainable water-energy-food nexus.

Abstract:Since the discovery of single-layer graphene in 2004, the family of 2D inorganic nanosheets is considered as ideal membrane materials due to their ultrathin atomic thickness and fascinating physicochemical properties. However, the intrinsically nonporous feature of 2D inorganic nanosheets hinders their potential to achieve a higher flux to some extent. Recently, 2D polymer nanosheets, originated from the regular and periodic covalent connection of the building units in 2D plane, have emerged as promising candidates for preparing ultrafast and highly selective membranes owing to their inherently tunable and ordered pore structure, light weight, and high specific surface. In this review, the synthetic methodologies (including top-down and bottom-up methods) of 2D polymer nanosheets are first introduced, followed by the summary of 2D polymer nanosheets-based membrane fabrication as well as membrane applications in the fields of gas separation, water purification, organic solvent separation, and ion exchange/transport in fuel cells and lithium-sulfur batteries. Finally, based on their current achievements, the authors' personal insights are put forward into the existing challenges and future research directions of 2D polymer nanosheets for membrane separation. The authors believe this comprehensive review on 2D polymer nanosheets-based membrane separation will definitely inspire more studies in this field.
