Abstract:Existing literature has primarily examined how to promote customer-oriented organizational citizenship behavior (CO-OCB) in the hospitality and tourism industries, the influencing factors that drive such behaviors in the gig economy remain unclear. This study investigates the impact of gamification on the CO-OCB of gig workers and takes into account the mediators of harmonious and obsessive passion, as well as the moderating role of perceived algorithmic control. Using a time-lagged questionnaire survey design to collect data from a sample of 419 gig workers from various platforms in China, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to test the proposed hypotheses. The results indicate that gamification affects CO-OCB positively through workers' harmonious passion but negatively through obsessive passion. Additionally, perceived algorithmic control negatively moderates the relationship between gamification and harmonious passion and positively moderates the relationship between gamification and obsessive passion. Our findings reveal the pros and cons of gamification and the importance of recognizing work passion and perceived algorithmic control in the relationship between gamification and CO-OCB.
