Abstract:Aeromagnetic gradients are often used to enhance details or add new insights for interpretation. The gradients may be measured or derived from the total field or from transformation between horizontal and vertical gradients. At present, vertical, horizontal, and triaxial aeromagnetic gradiometers are in operation throughout the world, while the first two are used more widely. Transformations between horizontal and vertical gradients are needed for acquiring three gradient components or for checking the validity of measured gradients. Transformation of potential field by fast Fourier transform technique in frequency domain is popularly used; however, when applied to transforming between gradients, there is a problem that needs resolving. Because those expressions of transform operators are undefined when u or v is equal to zero or u and v are simultaneously equal to zero ( u is the frequency in x -direction, and v is the frequency in y -direction), the operators cannot be sampled at these frequencies. Consequently, the transformation cannot be implemented by fast Fourier transform technique directly. In this article, shift sampling theory is employed for resolving this problem. Model test results show that the technique has good accuracy, and the real case of transformation indicates that the computed results agree better with the measured gradients; it demonstrates not only the effectiveness of method but also the reliability of the measured gradients.
Applicability of Small and Low-Cost Magnetic Sensors to Geophysical Exploration

Abstract:In the past few decades, there has been a notable technological advancement in geophysical sensors. In the case of magnetometry, several sensors were used, having the common feature of being miniaturized and lightweight, thus idoneous to be carried by UAVs in drone-borne magnetometric surveys. A common feature is that their sensitivity ranges from 0.1 to about 200 nT, thus not comparable to that of optically pumped, standard fluxgate or even proton magnetometers. However, their low cost, volume and weight remain very interesting features of these sensors. In fact, such sensors have the common feature of being very inexpensive, so new ways of making surveys using many of these sensors could be devised, in addition to the possibility, even with limited resources, of creating gradiometers by combining two or more of them. In this paper, we explore the range of applicability of small tri-axial magnetometers commonly used for attitude determination in several devices. We compare the results of surveys performed with standard professional geophysical instruments with those obtained using these sensors and find that in the presence of strongly magnetized sources, they succeeded in identifying the main anomalies.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a fast interpretation method for gravity gradiometry data, based on the magnetic dipole localization method. It could automatically and rapidly locate the horizontal and vertical positions of gravity targets without prior information. This method was successfully tested on synthetic data. Compared with gradient ratio method (tilt-depth) and Euler deconvolution, our method provided good performance in the gravity gradiometry data with high noise levels and superimposed fields. Point selection was processed among the inversion results to improve the resolution of our method. Statistical analysis and Gaussian fitting were also used to improve the stability and accuracy of the calculation. Finally, we applied this algorithm to gravity gradiometry data over Vinton Dome; the results are consistent with previous research in this area.
On the combined gravity gradient modeling for applied geophysics

Abstract:Gravity gradiometry research and development has intensified in recent years to the extent that technologies providing a resolution of about 1 Eotvos per 1 sec average shall likely soon be available for multiple critical applications such as natural resources exploration, oil reservoir monitoring and defence establishment. Much of the content of this paper was composed a decade ago, and only minor modifications were required for the conclusions to be just as applicable today. In this paper we demonstrate how gravity gradient data can be modeled, and show some examples of how gravity gradient data can be combined in order to extract valuable information. In particular, this study demonstrates the importance of two gravity gradient components, Txz and Tyz which, when processed together, can provide more information on subsurface density contrasts than that derived solely from the vertical gravity gradient (Tzz).

Abstract:Inspired by animals’ long-distance migration behaviors, we proposed a novel and reliable long-distance true navigation method based on the measurement of geomagnetic fields. By establishing a 2-D gradient approaching a coordinate plane with geomagnetic intensity and inclination, long-distance true navigation can be achieved from any starting spot in this area. Without other calibration and auxiliary information, this navigation method is highly independent, which can be used in electromagnetic shielding circumstances, such as a deep ocean. The geomagnetic intensity and inclination gradients are estimated with real-time measurement of the geomagnetic field along the navigation trajectory. With estimated local gradients, a 2-D gradient approaching algorithm can be applied to predict the heading direction, and the agent can press on toward the destination step by step. Theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo simulations verified the feasibility and practicality of this method, proving its robustness in the presence of interference and different measurement errors. It can be a promising candidate in the design of navigation systems used in autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) or platforms.
Drone-Borne Magnetic Gradiometry in Archaeological Applications

Abstract:The use of magnetometers arranged in a gradiometer configuration offers a practical and widely used solution, particularly in archaeological applications where the sources of interest are generally shallow. Since magnetic anomalies due to archaeological remains often have low amplitudes, highly sensitive magnetic sensors are kept very close to the ground to reveal buried structures. However, the deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is increasingly becoming a reliable and valuable tool for the acquisition of magnetic data, providing uniform coverage of large areas and access to even very steep terrain, saving time and reducing risks. However, the application of a vertical gradiometer for drone-borne measurements is still challenging due to the instability of the system drone magnetometer in flight and noise issues due to the magnetic interference of the mobile platform or related to the oscillation of the suspended sensors. We present the implementation of a magnetic vertical gradiometer UAV system and its use in an archaeological area of Southern Italy. To reduce the magnetic and electromagnetic noise caused by the aircraft, the magnetometer was suspended 3m below the drone using ropes. A Continuous Wavelet Transform analysis of data collected in controlled tests confirmed that several characteristic power spectrum peaks occur at frequencies compatible with the magnetometer oscillations. This noise was then eliminated with a properly designed low-pass filter. The resulting drone-borne vertical gradient data compare very well with ground-based magnetic measurements collected in the same area and taken as a control dataset.
Can Traditional Terrestrial Applications of Gravity Gradiometry Rely Upon Quantum Technologies ? A Side View

Abstract:The era of practical terrestrial applications of gravity gradiometry begun in 1890 when Baron Lorand von E\"otv\"os, a Hungarian nobleman and a talented physicist and engineer, invented his famous torsion balance - the first practical gravity gradients measuring device. It was credited for the major oil discoveries later in Texas (USA). A 100 years later Kasevich and Chu pioneered the use of quantum physics for gravity gradient measurements. Since then cold-atom gravity gradiometers, or matter-wave gravity gradiometers, had been under development at almost every physics department of top-rated universities around the globe. After another 30 years since the Kasevich and Chu publication in 1992, which had led to the first ever quantum gravity gradiometer, the corresponding research and development ceased from being profoundly active a few years back. This article is an attempt to understand and explain what may have happened to the Quantum Invasion into the area of applied physics and precision engineering that traditionally has been occupied by non-quantum technologies developed for about a 130 years of the history of gravity gradiometry.
MEMS surface microgravimetry for geotechnical surveying

Abstract:Microgravity measurements have enabled a variety of geophysical surveying and monitoring applications including advance warning of natural hazards, slope stability monitoring, discovery of buried tunnels, pipework, and other utilities, identification of sinkholes and other natural voids, buried aquifers and in monitoring groundwater hydrology. In the civil engineering context, microgravity measurements can provide valuable information for construction projects or intervention activities by locating buried utilities, hazards or other features of relevance.Disruptive MEMS gravity sensor technologies are poised to provide entirely new approaches for microgravity measurements in the form of portable sensors that could ultimately be mounted on remotely operated vehicles or drones, integrated into land-based distributed sensor networks, or deployed in shallow borehole configurations. Instruments based on these sensors could enable vector gravity measurements as well as full tensor gravity gradiometry.Trials are ongoing of a single-axis MEMS surface module with a noise floor of 50 &#181;Gal/rt-Hz and a resolution of < 10 &#181;Gal while allowing for measurement over the entire +/- 1g dynamic range. This paper discusses the background and context for gravity imaging in geotechnical applications, forward modelling of case studies of relevance, and ongoing developments in the construction of a unique portable surface gravimeter.
Field testing innovative differential geospatial and photogrammetric monitoring technologies in mountainous terrain near Ashcroft, British Columbia, Canada

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach to continuously monitor very slow-moving translational landslides in mountainous terrain using conventional and experimental differential global navigation satellite system (d-GNSS) technologies. A key research question addressed is whether displacement trends captured by a radio-frequency "mobile" d-GNSS network compare with the spatial and temporal patterns in activity indicated by satellite interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry. Field testing undertaken at Ripley Landslide, near Ashcroft in south-central British Columbia, Canada, demonstrates the applicability of new geospatial technologies to monitoring ground control points (GCPs) and railway infrastructure on a landslide with small and slow annual displacements (<10 cm/yr). Each technique records increased landslide activity and ground displacement in late winter and early spring. During this interval, river and groundwater levels are at their lowest levels, while ground saturation rapidly increases in response to the thawing of surficial earth materials, and the infiltration of snowmelt and runoff occurs by way of deep-penetrating tension cracks at the head scarp and across the main slide body. Research over the last decade provides vital information for government agencies, national railway companies, and other stakeholders to understand geohazard risk, predict landslide movement, improve the safety, security, and resilience of Canada's transportation infrastructure; and reduce risks to the economy, environment, natural resources, and public safety.
Geophysical survey based on Hybrid Gravimetry using Relative Measurements and an Atomic Gravimeter as an Absolute Reference

Abstract:Gravimetry is a versatile metrological approach in geophysics to accurately map subterranean mass and density anomalies. There is a broad diversification regarding the working principle of gravimeters, wherein atomic gravimeters are one of the most technologically progressive class of gravimeters which can monitor gravity at an absolute scale with a high-repetition without exhibiting drift. Despite the apparent utility for geophysical surveys, atomic gravimeters are (currently) laboratory-bound devices due to the vexatious task of transportation. Here, we demonstrated the utility of an atomic gravimeter on-site during a gravity survey, where the issue of immobility was circumvented with a relative spring gravimeter. The atomic gravimeter served as a means to map the relative data from the spring gravimeter to an absolute measurement with an effective precision of 7.7$\mu$Gal. Absolute measurements provide a robust and feasible method to define and control gravity data taken at different sites, or a later date, which is critical to analyze underground geological units, in particular when it is combined with other geophysical approaches.

Long-Distance Geomagnetic Navigation: Imitations of Animal Migration Based on a New Assumption

Abstract:Plenty of evidence has implied that animals like pigeons and sea turtles utilize geomagnetic information for long-distance migration and homing. In this paper, we conduct an ab initio investigation to imitate a migratory animal's geomagnetic homing across a long distance over the surface of the Earth. Based on a simple assumption that such animals have a natural ability to sense and compare the included angle between the vector geomagnetic field (GF) and a specific geographic direction such as the due north, we show that a long-distance geomagnetic navigation (GN) can be accomplished without any assistance of prestored geomagnetic and geographic information, as long as the navigation is inside a vast area where such a spatial angle can uniquely determine a geographic location. Without any requirement of measuring the strength of the GF, this GN will not be visibly affected by the recurrent fluctuation of the GF that severely hampers traditional GN. By introducing the extended-Kalman-filter algorithm, it is able to find a shortcut in the geomagnetic space, overcoming interferences of strong Gaussian and local-area geomagnetic anomaly. We believe that the proposed approach will find a wide range of potential applications in global, local, and indoor navigations based on magnetic field in the future.
Gravimetric Radar: Gravity-Based Detection of a Point-Mass Moving in a Static Background

Abstract:This paper discusses a novel approach for detecting moving massive objects based on the time variation that these objects produce in the local gravitational field measured by several detectors. Such an approach may provide a viable method for detecting stealth aircraft, UAVs, cruise, and ballistic missiles. By inverting a set of nonlinear algebraic equations, it is possible to use the time variation in the gravitational fields to compute the mass, position, and velocity of one or more moving objects. The approach is essentially a gravity-based form of triangulation. Based on order-of-magnitude calculations, we estimate that under realistic scenarios, this approach will be feasible if it is possible to design gravimetric devices that are four to five order of magnitude more sensitive than current devices. To achieve such a level of sensitivity, we suggest designing detectors that exploit a quantum-mechanical effect known as gravity-induced quantum interference. Furthermore, even if we have a perfect detector, it will be necessary to determine the magnitude of various atmospheric disturbances and other sources of noise.

Benefit of enhanced electrostatic and optical accelerometry for future gravimetry missions

Abstract:Twenty years of gravity observations from various satellite missions have provided unique data about mass redistribution processes in the Earth system. This paper studies the benefit of enhanced electrostatic and novel optical accelerometers and gradiometers for the future gravimetry missions. One of the limiting factors in the current space gravimetry missions is the drift of the Electrostatic Accelerometers (EA). This study focuses on the modeling of enhanced EAs with laser-interferometric readout, so called 'optical accelerometers', and on evaluating their performance for gravity field recovery in future satellite missions. In this paper, we simulate gravimetry missions in multiple scopes, applying the various software modules for satellite dynamics integration, accelerometer (ACC) and gradiometer simulation and gravity field recovery. The total noise budget of the modeled enhanced Electrostatic and optical ACCs show a similar sensitivity as the ACC concepts from other research groups. Parametrization w.r.t. ACCs test mass (TM) weight and the gap between the test mass and surrounding electrode housing confirmed previously known results that an ACC with a heavier TM and larger gap will have better performance. Our results suggest that the anticipated gain of novel ACCs might at some point be potentially limited by noise from the inter-satellite laser ranging interferometry. In order to present the advantage of the novel sensors, time-variable background models and associated aliasing errors were not considered in our simulations. Utilization of enhanced EA and optical ACC show a significant improvement of accuracy w.r.t. current GRACE-like EA. Also, their benefit in double satellite pairs in a so called 'Bender' constellations as well as in the combination of low-low satellite-to-satellite tracking with cross-track gradiometry has been investigated.

Using a SPATIAL INS/GNSS MEMS Unit to Detect Local Gravity Variations in Static and Mobile Experiments: First Results

Abstract:In this study, we present the feasibility of using gravity measurements made with a small inertial navigation system (INS) during in situ experiments, and also mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), to recover local gravity field variations. The INS operated is the SPATIAL one developed by Advanced Navigation, which has three-axis accelerometers. When the temperature bias is corrected, these types of INS are powerful enough to present the periodic signal corresponding to the solid Earth tides. There is also a clear correlation with the data measured at different altitudes by a CG5 gravimeter. However, these data were recorded on static points, so we also studied the INS in a moving platform on a UAV. Because there are a lot of vibrations recorded by the INS (wind, motor, on-board computer), the GPS and accelerometric data need to be filtered extensively. Once the data are corrected so they do not show thermal bias and low-pass filtered, we take the second derivative of the altitude (GPS) data to find the radial accelerometry of the drone and compare it to the radial accelerometry measured directly by the INS, in order to isolate the accelerometric signal that is related to the area that is being studied and the altitude. With a high enough precision, this method could be used to obtain the gravity variations due to the topography and density variations in the ground.
Advances in Portable Atom Interferometry-Based Gravity Sensing

Abstract:Gravity sensing is a valuable technique used for several applications, including fundamental physics, civil engineering, metrology, geology, and resource exploration. While classical gravimeters have proven useful, they face limitations, such as mechanical wear on the test masses, resulting in drift, and limited measurement speeds, hindering their use for long-term monitoring, as well as the need to average out microseismic vibrations, limiting their speed of data acquisition. Emerging sensors based on atom interferometry for gravity measurements could offer promising solutions to these limitations, and are currently advancing towards portable devices for real-world applications. This article provides a brief state-of-the-art review of portable atom interferometry-based quantum sensors and provides a perspective on routes towards improved sensors.
Research on Rapid Surveying and Mapping of Outfield Absolute Gravity Based on Vehicle-Mounted Atomic Gravimeter

Abstract:The information about Earth’s gravity field is an important basic information necessarily for geodesy, geophysics, geodynamics and other disciplines. The mapping of gravity field is an effective mean to obtain the gravity field information. Compared with the surveying of gravity field based on satellite, ship, and airplane, vehicle-mounted gravity mapping has advantages of strong flexibility, high spatial resolution and high accuracy. A short baseline or a small-scale gravity field mapping can be realized based on the combination of relative gravimeters and the high-precision absolute gravity reference point. However, this method is not suitable for the situation of a long baseline or a large-scale gravity field surveying due to the drift of relative gravimeter. In this work, a vehicle-mounted system for rapid surveying of the absolute gravity field is built up based on a miniaturized atomic gravimeter. The inner precision of the instrument is evaluated to be 0.123 mGal, and the outer precision is 0.112 mGal in a field test which contains 12 points for 3 km distance. Furthermore, with this system, the absolute gravity data are obatined within 2 min for adjusting and 5 min for measuring in downtown for each measured point. A rapid surveying of absolute gravity field for 19 points is carried out and the route covers 24 km. The inner precision of the instrument is evaluated to be 0.162 mGal, and the outer precision is 0.169 mGal. Finally, the free-air gravity anomalies obtained from the measured data of atomic gravimeter and the fitting results of satellite gravity model are analyzed, and it is found that the trends of changing are basically consistent with each other. This paper provides a new proposal for the rapid surveying of the absolute gravity field.
Commercial operation of a SQUID-based airborne magnetic gradiometer

Abstract:Gradient measurement of the magnetic field vector, especially full-tensor magnetic gradiometers (FTMGs), provides various advantages over gradient components derived from measurements of the total magnetic intensity (TMI). These advantages include higher spatial resolution, directional information, and thus more detailed anomaly delineation and a significantly better-constrained solution space for magnetic inversion and interpretation. However, the airborne application of FTMG instruments requires exceptionally high sensor resolution and low levels of motion noise to maximize these advantages and to achieve high exploration depth. Superconducting quantum interference detectors (SQUIDs) are an effective option for FTMG sensors, now available commercially in the system discussed herein. This SQUID sensor system comprises intrinsic planar-type gradiometers that produce data with sufficiently low noise for use on an airborne platform. The evolution and advancement of the system and its predecessor over the past two decades has produced a robust commercial system that produces high-quality full-tensor data sets from a helicopter-towed-bird implementation. Because the SQUID sensors measure directionally sensitive data, the processing of the acquired data is significantly more challenging than for TMI sensors. Noise induced by the motion of the bird during flight, especially rotational noise, must be monitored and compensated. The introduction of a more robust and aerodynamic bird has significantly reduced the noise of the system. This noise reduction translates into greater sensitivity and accuracy and, thus, heightened confidence in the use of the survey data sets. While much of the early use of the system has been in diamondiferous kimberlite exploration, the system has successfully flown surveys in mineral exploration for a variety of targets, including gold, nickel, and iron ore. These data sets provide greater confidence in the geologic interpretation across the survey areas. Other applications for FTMG surveying include infrastructure mapping, unexploded ordnance detection, and compensation of electromagnetic data sets in marine environments.
High-accuracy Gravity Measurement with Miniaturized Quantum Gravimeter

Abstract:Gravity field is a basic physical field of the Earth. It carries and reflects much information of the Earth, which is very important for fundamental research and practical application. Since the earth's gravity field changes with space and time, it needs to be measured by a mobile high-precision gravimeter. Quantum gravimeter is a new type of high-precision gravity measurement device developed in recent years and is based on atomic interference technology. Compared with traditional gravimeters, quantum gravimeters have better stability and accuracy, and can accurately survey the Earth's gravitational field distribution. In this paper, the basic principle, experiment and application of quantum gravimeter are summarized, including the latest research results in the development and application of miniaturized quantum gravimeter at home and abroad; the basic principle of miniaturized quantum gravimeter, the development of core unit of miniaturized quantum gravimeter (such as vacuum chamber, laser system, vibration isolation system and measurement supporting system) and its application in gravity comparison, earthquake monitoring and gravity field mapping are introduced. Finally, the accuracy limitations of quantum gravimeter (such as Raman phase noise, vibration noise and detection noise) and the other fundmetal applications (measurement of Newton's gravitational constant, weak equivalence principle) are presented. As a relatively mature technology in quantum sensors, quantum gravimeters show obvious advantages especially in dynamic measurement. Abstract:Vector magnetometry provides more information than scalar measurements for magnetic surveys utilized in space, defense, medical, geological, and industrial applications. These areas would benefit from a mobile vector magnetometer. Here we present a scanning fiber-coupled nitrogen-vacancy (N- V ) center vector magnetometer. Feedback control of the microwave excitation frequency is used to improve dynamic range and maintain sensitivity during movement of the sensor head. Tracking of the excitation frequency shifts for all four orientations of the N- V center allows us to image the vector magnetic field of a damaged steel plate. We calculate the magnetic tensor gradiometry images in real time, and they allow us to detect smaller damage than is possible with vector or scalar imaging. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.21.014003 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.
