Abstract:We extend the theory of quantum time loops introduced by Greenberger and Szovil [1] from the scalar situation (where paths have just an associated complex amplitude) to the general situation where the time traveling system has multi-dimensional underlying Hilbert space. The main mathematical tool which emerges is the noncommutative M\{o}bius Transformation and this affords a formalism similar to the modular structure well known to feedback control problems. We argue that a sum-over-all-paths approach may be carried out in the scalar case, but quickly becomes unwieldy in the general case. It is natural to replace the beamsplitters of [1] with more general components having their own quantum structure, in which case the theory starts to resemble the quantum feedback networks theory for open quantum optical models and indeed we exploit this to look at more realistic physical models of time loops. Abstract:The quantum geometry arising in Loop Quantum Gravity has been known to semi-classically lead to generalizations of length-geometries. There have been several attempts to interpret these so called twisted geometries and understand their role and fate in the continuum limit of the spin foam approach to quantum gravity. In this paper we offer a new perspective on this issue by showing that the twisted geometry of a 4-simplex can be understood as arising from an area-metric (in contrast to the more particular length-metric). Such equivalence allows us to define notions like signature, generalized triangle inequalities and parallel transport for twisted geometries (now understood in a 4-dimensional setting), exemplifying how it provides a new handle to understand them. Furthermore, it offers a new microscopic understanding of spin foam geometries which is notably supported by recent studies of the continuum effective dynamics of spin foams.

Abstract:After a brief introduction to classical and quantum gravity we discuss applications of loop quantum gravity in the cosmological realm. This includes the basic formalism and recent results of loop quantum cosmology, and a computation of modified dispersion relations for quantum gravity phenomenology. The presentation is held at a level which does not require much background knowledge in general relativity or mathematical techniques such as functional analysis, so as to make the article accessible to graduate students and researchers from other fields.

Abstract:Loop Quantum Gravity is widely developed using canonical quantization in an effort to find the correct quantization for gravity. Affine quantization, which is like canonical quantization augmented bounded in one orientation, e.g., a strictly positive coordinate. We open discussion using canonical and affine quantizations for two simple problems so each procedure can be understood. That analysis opens a modest treatment of quantum gravity gleaned from some typical features that exhibit the profound differences between aspects of seeking the quantum treatment of Einstein's gravity.

Abstract:A brief overview of loop quantum cosmology of homogeneous isotropic models is presented with emphasis on the origin of and subtleties associated with the resolution of big bang and big crunch singularities. These results bear out the remarkable intuition that John Wheeler had. Discussion is organized at two levels. The the main text provides a bird's eye view of the subject that should be accessible to non-experts. Appendices address conceptual and technical issues that are often raised by experts in loop quantum gravity and string theory.

Sewing spacetime with Lorentzian threads: complexity and the emergence of time in quantum gravity

Abstract:Holographic entanglement entropy was recently recast in terms of Riemannian flows or 'bit threads'. We consider the Lorentzian analog to reformulate the 'complexity=volume' conjecture using Lorentzian flows -- timelike vector fields whose minimum flux through a boundary subregion is equal to the volume of the homologous maximal bulk Cauchy slice. By the nesting of Lorentzian flows, holographic complexity is shown to obey a number of properties. Particularly, the rate of complexity is bounded below by conditional complexity, describing a multi-step optimization with intermediate and final target states. We provide multiple explicit geometric realizations of Lorentzian flows in AdS backgrounds, including their time-dependence and behavior near the singularity in a black hole interior. Conceptually, discretized flows are interpreted as Lorentzian threads or 'gatelines'. Upon selecting a reference state, complexity thence counts the minimum number of gatelines needed to prepare a target state described by a tensor network discretizing the maximal volume slice, matching its quantum information theoretic definition. We point out that suboptimal tensor networks are important to fully characterize the state, leading us to propose a refined notion of complexity as an ensemble average. The bulk symplectic potential provides a specific 'canonical' thread configuration characterizing perturbations around arbitrary CFT states. Consistency of this solution requires the bulk satisfy the linearized Einstein's equations, which are shown to be equivalent to the holographic first law of complexity, thereby advocating for a principle of 'spacetime complexity'. Lastly, we argue Lorentzian threads provide a notion of emergent time. Abstract:We quantize spherically symmetric vacuum gravity without gauge fixing the diffeomorphism constraint. Through a rescaling, we make the algebra of Hamiltonian constraints Abelian, and therefore the constraint algebra is a true Lie algebra. This allows the completion of the Dirac quantization procedure using loop quantum gravity techniques. We can construct explicitly the exact solutions of the physical Hilbert space annihilated by all constraints. New observables living in the bulk appear at the quantum level (analogous to spin in quantum mechanics) that are not present at the classical level and are associated with the discrete nature of the spin network states of loop quantum gravity. The resulting quantum space-times resolve the singularity present in the classical theory inside black holes.

Abstract:We review Holst formalism and we discuss dynamical equivalence with standard GR (in dimension 4). Holst formalism is written for a spin coframe field $e^I_\mu$ and a $Spin(3,1)$-connection $\omega^{IJ}_\mu$ on spacetime $M$ and it depends on the Holst parameter $\gamma\in \mathbb{R}-\{0\}$.

Abstract:Let a physical event constitute a simple loop in spacetime. This in turn calls for a generalized loop line element ( =distance2 between two neighboring loops) capable of restoring, at the shrinking loop limit, the special relativistic line element ( =distance2 between the two neighboring centers-of-mass, respectively). Sticking at first stage to a flat Euclidean/Minkowski background, one is led to such a preliminary loop line element, where the role of coordinates is played by the oriented cross sections projected by the loop event. Such cross sections are generically center-of-mass independent, unless (owing to a topological term) the loop events are intrinsically wrapped around a Kaluza-Klein–like compact fifth dimension. Serendipitously, it is the Kaluza-Klein ingredient which, on top of its traditional assignments, is shown to govern the extension of the Pythagoras theorem to loop space. Associated with M4⊗S1 is then a ten-dimensional loop spacetime metric, whose four-dimensional center-of-mass core term is supplemented by a six-dimensional Maxwell-style fine structure. The imperative inclusion of a positive (say Nambu-Goto) string tension within the framework of loop special relativity is fingerprinted by a low periodicity breathing mode. Quantum-reduced loop gravity: New perspectives on the kinematics and dynamics

Abstract:We present a systematic approach to the kinematics of quantum-reduced loop gravity, a model originally proposed by Alesci and Cianfrani as an attempt to probe the physical implications of loop quantum gravity. We implement the quantum gauge-fixing procedure underlying quantum-reduced loop gravity by introducing a master constraint operator on the kinematical Hilbert space of loop quantum gravity, representing a set of gauge conditions which classically constrain the densitized triad to be diagonal. The standard Hilbert space of quantum-reduced loop gravity can be recovered as a space of solutions of the master constraint operator, while on the other hand the master constraint approach provides a useful starting point for considering possible generalizations of the standard construction. We also examine the quantum dynamics of states consisting of a single six-valent node in the quantum-reduced framework. We find that the Hamiltonian which governs the dynamics of such states bears a close formal resemblance to the Hamiltonian constraint of Bianchi I models in loop quantum cosmology.

Abstract:We relate physical time with the topology of magnetic field vortices. We base ourselves on a formulation of unimodular gravity where the cosmological constant $\Lambda$ appears as the canonical dual to a variable which on-shell becomes four-volume time. If the theory is restricted to a topological axionic form (viz. a parity-odd product of an electric and a magnetic field), such a time variable becomes the spatial integral of the Chern-Simons density. The latter equates to helicity, so that unimodular time is transmuted into the linking number of the vortices of the topological magnetic field, times their flux. With the added {\it postulate} that this flux is a universal constant, the flow of time can thus be interpreted as the progressive weaving of further links between magnetic field vortices, each link providing a quantum of time with value related to the fixed flux. Non-abelian extensions, and targetting parameters other than $\Lambda$ are briefly examined, exposing different types of vortices and a possible role for inter-linking leading to new phenomenology.

Loop Quantum Cosmology: Physics of Singularity Resolution and its Implications

Abstract:The occurrence of singularities where spacetime curvature becomes infinite and geodesic evolution breaks down are inevitable events in classical general relativity (GR) unless one chooses an exotic matter violating weak energy condition. These singularities show up in various physical processes, such as the gravitational collapse, the birth of the universe in the standard cosmology as well as the classical solutions of the black hole spacetimes. In the last two decades, a rigorous understanding of the dynamics of quantum spacetime and the way it resolves singularities has been achieved in loop quantum cosmology (LQC) which applies the concepts and techniques of loop quantum gravity to the symmetry reduced cosmological spacetimes. Due to the fundamental discreteness of quantum geometry derived from the quantum theory, the big bang singularity has been robustly shown to be replaced by a big bounce. Strong curvature singularities intrinsic in the classical cosmology are generically resolved for a variety of cosmological spacetimes including anisotropic models and polarized Gowdy models. Using effective spacetime description the LQC universe also provides an ultra-violet complete description of the classical inflationary scenario as well as its alternatives such as the ekpyrotic and matter bounce scenarios. In this chapter we provide a summary of singularity resolution and its physical implications for various isotropic and anisotropic cosmological spacetimes in LQC and analyze robustness of results through variant models originating from different quantization prescriptions.

Abstract:In the present work we review the twisted field construction of quantum field theory on noncommutative spacetimes based on twisted Poincaré invariance. We present the latest development in the field, in particular the notion of equivalence of such quantum field theories on a noncommutative spacetime, in this regard we work out explicitly the inequivalence between twisted quantum field theories on Moyal and Wick-Voros planes; the duality between deformations of the multiplication map on the algebra of functions on spacetime $\mathscr{F}(\mathbb{R}^4)$ and coproduct deformations of the Poincaré-Hopf algebra $H\mathscr{P}$ acting on~$\mathscr{F}(\mathbb{R}^4)$; the appearance of a nonassociative product on $\mathscr{F}(\mathbb{R}^4)$ when gauge fields are also included in the picture. The last part of the manuscript is dedicated to the phenomenology of noncommutative quantum field theories in the particular approach adopted in this review. CPT violating processes, modification of two-point temperature correlation function in CMB spectrum analysis and Pauli-forbidden transition in ${\rm Be}^4$ are all effects which show up in such a noncommutative setting. We review how they appear and in particular the constraint we can infer from comparison between theoretical computations and experimental bounds on such effects. The best bound we can get, coming from Borexino experiment, is $\gtrsim 10^{24}$ TeV for the energy scale of noncommutativity, which corresponds to a length scale $\lesssim 10^{-43}$ m. This bound comes from a different model of spacetime deformation more adapted to applications in atomic physics. It is thus model dependent even though similar bounds are expected for the Moyal spacetime as well as argued elsewhere.

Abstract:We review the classical formulation of general relativity as an SL(2,C) gauge theory in terms of Ashtekar's selfdual variables and reality conditions for the spatial metric (RCI) and its evolution (RCII), and we add some new observations and results. We first explain in detail how a connection taking values in the Lie algebra of the complex Lorentz group yields two Spin(3,1) connections, one selfdual and one anti-selfdual, without the need for a spin structure. We then demonstrate that the selfdual part of the complexified Palatini action in Ashtekar variables requires a holomorphic phase space description in order to obtain a non-degenerate symplectic structure. The holomorphic phase space does not allow for the implementation of the reality conditions as additional constraints, so they have to be taken care of during the quantisation. We also observe that, due to the action being complex, there is an overall complex phase that can be chosen at will. We then review the canonical formulation and the consequences of the implementation of the reality conditions. We pay close attention to the transformation behaviour of the various fields under (complex) basis changes, as well as to complex analytic properties of the relevant functions on phase space.

Abstract:Loop quantum gravity in its Hamiltonian form relies on a connection formulation of the gravitational phase space with three key properties: 1.) a compact gauge group, 2.) real variables, and 3.) canonical Poisson brackets. In conjunction, these properties allow to construct a well defined kinematical quantization of the holonomy flux-algebra on top of which the remaining constraints can be implemented. While this idea has traditionally been mainly used for Einstein gravity, any gravitational theory with the above properties can be accommodated. In this paper, we are going to review three strands of work building on this observation, namely the study of higher-dimensional loop quantum gravity, supersymmetric extensions of loop quantum gravity, as well as the quantization of modified gravitational theories.

Abstract:All our observations that characterise space and time are expressed in terms of non-local, bi-tensorial objects such as geodesic intervals between events and two-point (Green) functions. In this contribution, I highlight the importance of characterising spacetime geometry in terms of such non-local objects, focusing particularly on two important bi-tensors that play a particular fundamental role -- Synge's World function and the van Vleck determinant. I will first discuss how these bi-tensors help capture information about spacetime geometry, and then describe their role in characterising quantum spacetime endowed with a lower bound, say $\ell_0$, on spacetime intervals. Incorporating such a length scale in a Lorentz covariant manner necessitates a description of spacetime geometry in terms of above bi-tensors, and naturally replaces the conventional description based on the metric tensor $g_{ab}(x)$ with a description in terms of a non-local bi-tensor $q_{ab}(x, y)$. The non-analytic structure of $q_{ab}(x, y)$ which renders a perturbative expansion in $\ell_0$ meaningless, also generically leaves a non-trivial ``relic" in the limit $\ell_0 \to 0$. I present some results where such a relic term is manifest; specifically, I will discuss how this: (i) suggests a description of gravitational dynamics different from the one based on Einstein-Hilbert lagrangian, (ii) implies dimensional reduction to $2$ at small scales, (iii) connects with the notion of cosmological constant itself being a non-local vestige of the small scale structure of spacetime, (iv) helps address the issues of spacetime singularities. I will conclude by discussing the ramifications of these ideas for quantum gravity.
