Abstract:Catalytic combustion is now considered to be an effective measure in the mitigation of anthropogenic methane emission contributing to the greenhouse effect, which demands appropriate catalysts of high activity at low temperatures and with high stability at elevated temperatures. Herein, a series of Pd/H-ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared via a sol-gel method and treated by reduction and oxidation; the effect of Pd particle size and redox treatment on the catalytic activity of Pd/H-ZSM-5 in lean methane combustion was investigated. The results indicate that the catalytic activity of Pd/H-ZSM-5 varies according to a volcano-shape trend with an increase in the Pd particle size from 3.5 to 10.1 nm; the Pd/H-ZSM-5 catalyst with a Pd particle size of around 5.2 nm exhibits the highest activity in lean methane oxidation. Moreover, the catalytic activity of Pd/H-ZSM-5 can be greatly enhanced through the reduction-oxidation treatment, which may reconstruct the palladium particles on the H-ZSM-5 surface and strengthen the interaction between the Pd species and the acid sites on the H-ZSM-5 support. The Pd/H-ZSM-5 catalyst after the reduction and oxidation treatment (with a Pd particle size of 5.2 nm) exhibits excellent activity in lean methane combustion, giving complete methane oxidation to carbon dioxide at as low as 300 degrees C. This work should be of great benefit for clarifying the relationship between the structure and performance for the acid zeolite supported Pd catalysts and for designing efficient catalysts in the lean methane combustion at low temperature.

Abstract:Catalysts based on palladium are among the most effective in the complete oxidation of methane. Despite extensive studies and notable advances, the nature of their catalytically active species and conceivable structural dynamics remains only partially understood. Here, we combine operando transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the active state and catalytic function of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) under methane oxidation conditions. We show that the particle size, phase composition and dynamics respond appreciably to changes in the gas-phase chemical potential. In combination with mass spectrometry (MS) conducted simultaneously with in situ observations, we uncover that the catalytically active state exhibits phase coexistence and oscillatory phase transitions between Pd and PdO. Aided by DFT calculations, we provide a rationale for the observed redox dynamics and demonstrate that the emergence of catalytic activity is related to the dynamic interplay between coexisting phases, with the resulting strained PdO having more favorable energetics for methane oxidation.

Constructing of Mn4+-O-PdOx sites in SmMn2O5 Mullite: Novel and Highly-Active reactive centers for Low-Temperature methane combustion

Abstract:Pd-based catalysts have been widely investigated for CH4 combustion yet they still suffer from inefficiency at low temperatures. Herein, a novel strategy was implemented to create a new type of highly active and stable Mn4+-O-PdOx center by doping Pd into SmMn2O5 lattice and modifying it with acid etching. Compared with the impregnation-method, T50 of the catalyst (SMPO-OA) synthesized by this strategy was reduced by 210 °C, and TOF value increased more than 6 times at 260 °C. Importantly, it showed the superior thermal stability and water resistance. Various characterization results indicate that Pd successfully occupied the Mn3+ position in the pyramid unit and formed abundant Mn-O-Pd linkage. Acid treatment introduced the unsaturated-coordination Mn4+-O-PdOx center, which showed high-activity for the methane activation. In-situ DRIFTS and Quasi-in-situ XPS indicate that methane oxidation on the SMPO-OA surface followed MvK mechanism, and activation ability of CH bond at low temperature was markedly improved.

Abstract:Palladium (Pd)-based catalysts have received extensive attention for their outstanding performance in the complete oxidation of methane (CH 4 ). A fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanism, particularly the most active phase, is essential for the development of efficient catalysts and the optimization of reaction conditions. By employing time-resolved ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (tr-APXPS) and on-line mass spectrometer (MS), we investigated the complete oxidation of CH 4 on the Pd(111) surface within a 1 mbar O 2 + 0.25 mbar CH 4 atmosphere, ranging from 600 to 900 K. Utilizing tr-APXPS enabled us to observe the phase transition of PdO → PdO x → O/Pd on the Pd(111) surface during the linear heating process. On-line MS data revealed that the formation of PdO x correlates with a significant increase in catalytic activity. By integrating the insights from APXPS and on-line MS, we propose that the catalytic activity for methane oxidation follows the order of PdO x > PdO > O/Pd. Furthermore, we suggest that the PdO x formed at the initial decomposition of bulk PdO is most active for dissociating methane.

Abstract:The supported Pd catalyst has been a benchmark for methane elimination. However, the active structures have been long under debate. Here, by the aberration-corrected high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy, operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy and quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we revealed the two-dimensional metallic Pd bumps on the PdO surface (litchi-like structure) generated by the redox atmosphere under the lean condition as a highly active structure of the Pd/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. The substantially increased Pd/PdO interfaces boost the methane combustion activity higher than the similar catalysts reported previously, and remarkably enhance the reaction rate by 15.5 and 10.7 times that of pure PdO or metallic Pd counterpart under lean condition at 300 °C, respectively. Density-functional theory calculations confirm the synergistic C–C bond activation of methane on the Pd/PdO interfaces. Our work provides new insight into the traditional understanding of the chemical state and particle size effects of the industrial Pd catalysts for methane oxidation. Abstract:Catalytic combustion is promising in removing trace amounts of CH(4)to address serious environmental concerns. Supported Pd-based catalysts are most effective but often suffer from low stability in applications owing to the water-vapor-induced sintering. Herein, we develop a universal strategy to prepare irreducible-oxide-modified Pd/MgAl(2)O(4)catalysts which show high activity and excellent stability against both hydrothemal aging at elevated temperatures and deactivation in long-term reaction under wet conditions. The addition of irreducible oxides inhibited the deep oxidation of Pd in the oxygen-rich conditions, which preserved not only the epitaxial structure but also a suitable active phase of Pd-PdO(x)on MgAl2O4, thus promoting both activity and stability. This work provides new insights into the effect of metal-oxide interaction on CH(4)combustion and offers an avenue to design hydrothermally stable and active combustion catalysts for industrial applications.

Abstract:In this work, metal oxides with different phase structures (stannic oxide, zirconia and tin-zirconium binary oxide) were designed to construct palladium-based catalysts. The factors affecting methane combustion over catalysts were revealed by exploring the reasons for the enhancement and depression of catalytic performance under various reaction conditions. The formation of Sn x Zr 1−x O 2 solid solutions not only generated abundant oxygen vacancies to improve the reducibility of PdO and the redox of Pd↔PdO, but also induced the formation of active PdO x , conjointly leading to the excellent catalytic activity and hydrothermal stability. Under SO 2 -containing atmosphere, the thermodynamically favorable formation of stable Zr(SO 4 ) 2 caused the significant diminish of oxygen vacancies and active Pd step sites in catalysts. Consequently, the sulfur-resistance and regeneration performance of Zr-containing catalysts were inferior to those of Pd/SnO 2 . The above contrast manifested that both oxygen vacancies and active palladium species were responsible for the efficient and stable methane combustion.

Pentacoordinated Al 3+ -Stabilized Active Pd Structures on Al 2 O 3 -Coated Palladium Catalysts for Methane Combustion.

Abstract:Supported Pd catalysts are active in catalyzing the highly exothermic methane combustion reaction but tend to be deactivated owing to local hyperthermal environments. Herein we report an effective approach to stabilize Pd/SiO2 catalysts with porous Al2O3 overlayers coated by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Al-27 magic angle spinning NMR analysis showed that Al2O3 overlayers on Pd particles coated by the ALD method are rich in pentacoordinated Al3+ sites capable of strongly interacting with adjacent surface PdOx phases on supported Pd particles. Consequently, Al2O3-decorated Pd/SiO2 catalysts exhibit active and stable PdOx and Pd-PdOx structures to efficiently catalyze methane combustion between 200 and 850 degrees C. These results reveal the unique structural characteristics of Al2O3 overlayers on metal surfaces coated by the ALD method and provide a practical strategy to explore stable and efficient supported Pd catalysts for methane combustion.

Abstract:Up to now, methane combustion catalysts generally suffer from issues such as poor reaction stability and susceptibility to sulfur poisoning, which have become the key factors restricting their application, so it is necessary to construct catalysts with excellent chemical stability of the active center and strong sulfur resistance. Here, we showed the crystal phase-modulated state of PtO x nanoparticles (PtO x NPs) on TiO 2 and investigated their effects on the reactivity of methane catalytic combustion and anti-SO 2 poisoning properties. It was found that Pt/r-TiO 2 showed superior activity, stability, and resistance to SO 2 poisoning. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images showed that the PtO x NPs on the surface of r-TiO 2 were much more stable than a-TiO 2 for the reason that the Ostwald ripening of PtO x NPs on a-TiO 2 was facilitated due to the strong metal-support interaction (MSI) between PtO x NPs and TiO 2 and the low migration energy of the PtO x NPs on TiO 2 , while they were moderate of Pt/r-TiO 2 , and then the active sites were stabilized during methane combustion. The activity was controlled by the size and electronic structure of PtO x NPs, which were stable on the surface of r-TiO 2 with a higher Pt 4+ content, and the density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed the role of r-TiO 2 in increasing the quantities of surface oxygen vacancies. Moreover, the SO 2 tolerance of Pt/r-TiO 2 was also the best among all kinds of Pt-based catalysts prepared, which was attributed to the minimal adsorption energy ( E ad ) of SO 2 on r-TiO 2 , and the absence of sulfate and sulfite deposition on the Pt/r-TiO 2 catalyst confirmed by TGA and in-situ DRIFTS studies on SO 2 adsorption. In this research, the anti-SO 2 poisoning and reaction stability were realized by adjusting the interaction between SO 2 , active components, and supports, which provided a new insight for the design of stable Pt-based SO 2 -resistant catalysts.

Abstract:Three types of nanoplatelet-like Co3O4-supported Pd catalysts were prepared to investigate the effect of existence states of Pd species on catalytic combustion of methane. The Pd-Co3O4 catalysts performed the best performance for CH4 combustion than Pd/Co3O4 and Pd@Co3O4, with much higher catalytic activity (T90:337 °C vs. 361 °C and 372 °C) and lower apparent activation energy (Ea: 66.9 kJ mol−1 vs. 89.7 kJ mol−1 and 90.5 kJ mol−1). Besides, the Pd-Co3O4 catalysts exhibited excellent resistance ability of co-existence with H2O and CO2 poisoning. Experimental observations suggested that the Pd-Co3O4 possessed the highest Pd dispersion, thus exposing the largest amount of surface active PdO species among these catalysts. Furthermore, embedded Pd-Co3O4 architecture endowed more active adsorbed oxygen species and abundant oxygen vacancies, and better reducibility. More importantly, combined with O2-TPD, H2-TPR, CH4-TPSR, and quasi in situ XPS observations, it was also evidenced that the surface adsorbed oxygen species were defined as primary active oxygen species. These reactive oxygen species were consumed by methane oxidation and regenerated via adsorption and activation of gaseous oxygen on surface oxygen vacancies and transformation from lattice oxygen. Our work here paves the pathway for rational design of high-performance Pd-based catalysts in hydrocarbon oxidation.

Palladium Promoted SmMn 2O 5 Catalyst with Highly Efficient Oxygen Species for Methane Combustion

Abstract:Mn-based mullite-type and perovskite-type catalysts were prepared and applied to methane combustion. The Pd/SmMn2O5 catalyst showed the best catalytic performance which could convert 50% of CH4 to CO2 at 328 °C and 90% at 394 °C. It was even better than both Pd/perovskites and 1% Pd/Al2O3 catalyst. Compared to perovskite-type catalysts, the Pd/SmMn2O5 catalyst had more active surface lattice oxygen and exhibited excellent reducibility. Moreover, the metal-support interaction between palladium and mullite was stronger and resulted in the well dispersion of Pd, which further determined its crucial effects for activating the lattice oxygen and promoting the catalytic activity of the catalyst. These superiorities provided the potential to make it as the candidate for methane combustion.

Abstract:Reversibly adjusting the active structures of supported metal catalysts in response to dynamic working conditions has long been pursued. Here we report the reaction-environment-modulated transformations of subnanometre-sized Pd on CeO 2 for efficient methane removal, leveraging the reaction environments at different stages of automotive exhaust aftertreatment. During the cold start of vehicles, inactive Pd 1 single atoms are readily transformed into PdO x subnanometre clusters by CO even at room temperature with excess O 2 , resulting in boosted low-temperature CH 4 oxidation. At elevated temperatures, dispersion of PdO x cluster into Pd 1 against metal sintering renders outstanding hydrothermal stability to the catalyst, to be activated during the next vehicle start. Combined experimental and computational studies elucidate the dynamically evolved Pd speciation on CeO 2 at an atomic level. Modulating the reversible nature of supported metals helps overcome the long-existing trade-off between low-temperature activity and high-temperature stability, also providing a new paradigm for designing intelligent catalysts that brings single-atom/cluster catalysts closer to real applications.

Catalytic Behavior of Flame-Made Pd/TiO2 Nanoparticles in Methane Oxidation at Low Temperatures

Abstract:A controlled one-step synthesis of titania-supported palladium (Pd/TiO2) nanoparticles is demonstrated by using a premixed stagnation swirl flame with an ultrafine spray feeding system. The new method produces well-dispersed palladium dusters on the surface of TiO2 particle. The low-temperature methane catalytic oxidation indicates that the flame-made Pd/TiO2 possesses activity apparently higher than that of the impregnated one under the same Pd loading. For the first time, we observe a special pinched hysteresis loop of catalytic activity of Pd/TiO2 a nanopartides from the curves of CH4 conversion versus temperature during heating-cooling cycles. Thermal stability analysis confirms the complex coexistence and transformation of metallic Pd and PdO in Pcl/TiO2 particles. Further morphological characterization reveals the oxidation rate is controlled by the metallic Pd content on the particle surface, whereas the deactivation of the catalysts is mainly due to the Pd dispersion decrement. The competition between the Pd dispersion decrement and the PdO reduction at the surface may result in the pinched hysteresis loop of Pd/TiO2 catalysts during low-temperature methane combustion.

Abstract:Industrial low-temperature methane combustion catalyst Pd/Al2O3 suffers from H2O-induced deactivation. It is imperative to design Pd catalysts free from this deactivation and with high atomic efficiency. Using a small-pore zeolite SSZ-13 as support, herein we report well-defined Pd catalysts with dominant active species as finely dispersed Pd cations, uniform PdO particles embedded inside the zeolite framework, or PdO particles decorating the zeolite external surface. Through detailed reaction kinetics and spectroscopic and microscopic studies, we show that finely dispersed sites are much less active than PdO nanoparticles. We further demonstrate that H2O-induced deactivation can be readily circumvented by using zeolite supports with high Si/Al ratios. Finally, we provide a few rational catalyst design suggestions for methane oxidation based on the new knowledge learned in this study.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
Methane combustion over palladium catalysts with manipulated aggregation on zirconia support

Abstract:Zirconia supported palladium catalysts were synthesized in the inert solvent by an in-situ reduction route. The preparative parameters, such as the reducing agents and the way of pre-nucleation, were regulated for the purpose of tuning the interaction between the support and the active metal (SMI). When a high dispersion of palladium is obtained by reducing agent of 1,2-hexadecanediol, a strong SMI between the active metal and zirconia is built up. This depresses the catalytic performance of the Pd/PdOx composite active phase for methane combustion. Conversely, the ratio of palladium species (Pd/PdOx) is apt to be optimized in the case of sample reduced by 2,5-di-tert-butyl-p-diphenol (DTBHQ). Furthermore, the catalysts involved a pre-nucleation step will result in a much weaker SMI, which leads to a decrease of catalytic activity for methane combustion. It is proved that an appropriate SMI is a key factor for the oxidation activity of supported palladium catalysts.

Abstract:As a class of natural clay minerals, the special surface characteristic of the negatively charged outer surface and the positively charged inner lumen enables halloysite to be of potential interest for catalytic applications. In this work, thermal treatment and modification with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide made the outer surface of halloysite hydrophobic, which resulted in the selective loading of palladium on the hydrophilic inner surface of halloysite. The designed site-oriented loading endowed catalysts with the desired structure and favorable properties for methane combustion. Because of the uniformly dispersed palladium particles (ca. 2 nm), a suitable ratio of Pd2+/Pd4+, better reducibility, and appropriate surface acidity, the tailored catalyst exhibited a remarkably higher activity with the T99 decreasing from 620 °C (unmodified catalysts) to 425 °C. More importantly, the stabilized palladium species could resist sintering and the diminishing of hydroxyl groups on the surface weakened the interaction with water, invoking an excellent long-term/cyclic stability and water resistance for methane combustion.

Durable PdNi/Al2O3 Catalysts with PdO-NiO and PdO-NiAl2O4 Dual Interfaces for Methane Combustion

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation is a valuable residual methane removal method, and Pd-based catalysts are the most robust and widely applied system. Yet, they suffer from poor stability in practical applications due to sintering and water poisoning. In this work, we prepared a high-performance PdNi/Al2O3 catalyst with PdO-NiO and PdO-NiAl2O4 dual interfaces. PdNi/Al2O3 showed excellent hydrothermal stability after aging at 750 degrees C, 10% H2O for 72 h, with the T50 remaining below 315 degrees C. In addition, compared to bare Pd/Al2O3, PdNi/Al2O3 exhibited a better low-temperature activity with a T50 of 287 degrees C, rivaling state-of-the-art Pd-based catalysts. Combining structural characterizations and DFT calculations, it was shown that dual interfaces promoted the activation of methane C-H bonds and suppressed the adsorption of surface water/hydroxyl groups and agglomeration of PdO particles. This study has provided new perceptions for exploring the influence of interfacial interactions and offered a route to synthesize high-stability palladium catalysts.

Abstract:A series of Pd/xP-CZA catalysts were prepared to investigate the impacts of phosphorus on the structures and catalytic activity. It was found that increasing the amount of phosphorus incorporation leads to the transformation of CexZr1-xO2 phase into ZrO2 and CePO4 at high temperature by the reaction of P species with CexZr1-xO2 composites, which induces the declined reducibility. The addition of phosphorus effectively adjusts the surface Pd2+/(Pd2++Pd0) ratios and generates larger Pd particle sizes, synergistically promoting catalytic oxidation of methane.

Abstract:A new two-step method of combining colloid synthesis and incipient wetness impregnation routes was followed for the synthesis of a Pt-PdO bimetallic catalyst for methane combustion. The catalyst was characterized by powder XRD, XPS, TPO and in-situ DRIFTS. The results have demonstrated that there is almost no PtPd alloy formed over the bimetallic catalyst. Compared with the bimetallic catalyst of same nominal composition prepared by the traditional incipient wetness impregnation method, the redox properties of the catalyst were significantly improved. The catalyst showed an exceptional low-temperature activity for methane oxidation. It was found that the concentration of hydroxyl groups over the catalyst was greatly reduced during methane combustion. The present study may provide a general method for the preparation of bimetallic nanoparticles with high activity towards other heterogeneous catalytic reactions.
