Abstract:This paper presents a highly sensitive and flexible tactile sensor based on 3D microstructure graphene sponges. The graphene sponges are fabricated in a dip-coating process that stacks the graphene layers onto the polyimide scaffolds in a homogeneous graphene solution with graphene oxide serving as the dispersant. The tactile sensor has 3 x 3 sensing units and is fabricated through photoetching, magnetron sputtering, and screen-printing processes. The graphene sponge has relatively low Young's modulus of 16 kPa and is capable of enduring large strains over 60%. Furthermore, the sensor unit with the graphene sponge has a high sensitivity of 0.046 kPa(-1) at 0.3 similar to 10 kPa, a lower sensitivity of 0.007 kPa(-1) at 10 similar to 40 kPa, and shows good reproducibility and dynamic response. The increase in the contact areas of the graphene cell walls inside the graphene sponge and the overlapping areas in the laminated graphene flakes synergistically contribute to the high piezoresistive sensitivity. Body wearing experiments to detect wrist bending and muscle vibration demonstrate that the tactile sensor has potential for monitoring body motion and other biomedical applications.

Abstract:The trade‐off between high flexibility and superelasticity of aerogels is broken by designing trans‐scale porous structure composed of hyperbolic micropores and porous nanofibers. Highly flexible and superelastic aerogels at large deformation have become urgent mechanical demands in practical uses, but both properties are usually exclusive. Here a trans‐scale porosity design is proposed in graphene nanofibrous aerogels (GNFAs) to break the trade‐off between high flexibility and superelasticity. The resulting GNFAs can completely recover after 1000 fatigue cycles at 60% folding strain, and notably maintain excellent structural integrity after 10000 cycles at 90% compressive strain, outperforming most of the reported aerogels. The mechanical robustness is demonstrated to be derived from the trans‐scale porous structure, which is composed of hyperbolic micropores and porous nanofibers to enable the large elastic deformation capability. It is further revealed that flexible and superelastic GNFAs exhibit high sensitivity and ultrastability as an electrical sensors to detect tension and flexion deformation. As proof, The GNFA sensor is implemented onto a human finger and achieves the intelligent recognition of sign language with high accuracy by multi‐layer artificial neural network. This study proposes a highly flexible and elastic graphene aerogel for wearable human‐machine interfaces in sensor technology.

Abstract:Graphene aerogels hold huge promise for the development of high-performance pressure sensors for future human-machine interfaces due to their ordered microstructure and conductive network. However, their application is hindered by the limited strain sensing range caused by the intrinsic stiffness of the porous microstructure. Herein, an anisotropic cross-linked chitosan and reduced graphene oxide (CCS-rGO) aerogel metamaterial is realized by reconfiguring the microstructure from a honeycomb to a buckling structure at the dedicated cross-section plane. The reconfigured CCS-rGO aerogel shows directional hyperelasticity with extraordinary durability (no obvious structural damage after 20 000 cycles at a directional compressive strain of ≤0.7). The CCS-rGO aerogel pressure sensor exhibits an ultrahigh sensitivity of 121.45 kPa-1, an unprecedented sensing range, and robust mechanical and electrical performance. The aerogel sensors are demonstrated to monitor human motions, control robotic hands, and even integrate into a flexible keyboard to play music, which opens a wide application potential in future human-machine interfaces.

Abstract:Many practical applications of graphene require the assembly of multiple graphene nanosheets into a macroscopic aerogel. It is essential that these graphene aerogels can retain their structural integrity when undergoing large deformations. However, it is still a great challenge to achieve large-scale, deformable, and fatigue-resistant bioinspired graphene aerogels under natural conditions. Here, we demonstrated that the combination of freeze-casting technique and natural drying led to the formation of superelastic graphene aerogels, thus overcoming the conventional lyophilization process from the requirement of special equipment. Mimicking the architecture of wood, the resultant graphene aerogel achieved rapid recovery and small energy dissipation after compression cycles, even under 90% compressive strain. In particular, this graphene aerogel can maintain structural integrity after more than 1000 cycles at 70% compressive strain, due to its unique bionic structure which processes a high energy absorption capacity. Furthermore, this graphene aerogel with exceptional mechanical performance, as well as its high conductivity and hydrophobicity, presents excellent piezoresistive sensing, stretch-release cyclic rGO/silicone composite sensing and oil-water separation properties. The successful synthesis of naturally dried superelastic graphene aerogels is expected to be applied in flexible sensors and clean-up of organic pollutions or oil spills.

Abstract:Sustainable‐macromolecule‐derived carbons are efficiently employed to cross‐link the graphene nanosheets for constructing ultralight, highly flexible, and biomimetic porous graphene aerogel sensors, which show superior compressibility and resilience, good mechanical strength and durability, and satisfactory fire‐resistance, as well as the outstanding low‐frequency strain/pressure to high‐frequency vibration electromechanical sensing performance. Ultralight and highly flexible aerogel sensors, composed of reduced graphene oxide cross‐linked by sustainable‐macromolecule‐derived carbon, are prepared via facile freeze‐drying and thermal annealing. The synergistic combination of cross‐linked graphene nanosheets and micrometer‐sized honeycomb pores gives rise to the exceptional properties of the aerogels, including superior compressibility and resilience, good mechanical strength and durability, satisfactory fire‐resistance, and outstanding electromechanical sensing performances. The corresponding aerogel sensors, operated at an ultralow voltage of 0.2 V, can efficiently respond to a wide range of strains (0.1–80%) and pressures (13−2750 Pa) even at temperatures beyond 300 °C. Moreover, the ultrahigh‐pressure sensitivity of 10 kPa−1 and excellent sensing stability and durability are accomplished. Strikingly, the aerogel sensors can also sense the vibration signals with ultrahigh frequencies of up to 4000 Hz for >1 000 000 cycles, significantly outperforming those of other sensors. These enable successful demonstration of the exceptional performance of the cross‐linked graphene‐based biomimetic aerogels for sensitive monitoring of mechanical signals, e.g., acting as wearable devices for monitoring human motions, and for nondestructive monitoring of cracks on engineering structures, showing the great potential of the aerogel sensors as next‐generation electronics.

Abstract:Elastic graphene aerogels have promising applications in flexible pressure sensors. However, it is still difficult to prepare graphene aerogels with high sensitivity and reliable mechanical stability due to the challenge in structural regulation. This study proposes an innovative method for preparing graphene aerogel by combining wet-electrospinning and freeze-drying. The resultant is a cotton-like 3D graphene fiber aerogel (GFA) with soft exterior but firm essence. The aerogel assembled of randomly stacked 1D graphene fiber, exhibiting softness and low compressive strength, thus ensuring the highly sensitive. Furthermore, this graphene fiber possessing strong mechanical properties after high-temperature thermal annealing, guarantees the fatigue resistance and elasticity of the aerogel. Therefore, the assembled GFA-based pressure sensor is ultrasensitive with a high sensitivity of 18.55 kPa−1 and a low detection limit of 2 Pa. Additionally, it has a rapid response time of 2 ms and maintains good stability even after 3000 cycles. The exceptional properties of GFA suggest its immense potential for application in human health monitoring and motion detection. In addition, the wet-electrospinning preparation of GFA provides a new strategy for the fabrication of graphene aerogels.

Abstract:Piezoresistive sensors are highly desired in a wide variety of fields in health monitoring, human–machine interaction, robot sensing, and so on. Developing engineering-architected piezoresistive sensors with biocompatibility, high sensitivity, and mechanical robustness is one of the hot research fields. Here, a high-performance hybrid carbon aerogel is constructed from bacterial cellulose, chitosan, graphene oxide, and graphene based on synergistic electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding through unidirectional freeze-casting and carbonization. The carbon aerogel, characterized by its unique lamellar and fibrous alternating structure, mirrors the stability of a well-constructed "bridge". In this analogy, the layer functions as a steady "girder", while the fiber emulates indispensable "stay cable". The ordered microstructure contributes to uniform stress transfer, yielding a carbon aerogel-based sensor that exhibits high piezoresistive linear sensitivity (150 kPa −1 ), outstanding mechanical stability (3000 compressing cycles), and a quick response/recovery time (120/90 ms). The piezoresistive sensor detects real-time human physiological signals and effectively distinguishes subtle and different acoustic signals, enabling sound visualization. Also, it can work well in extreme conditions (200 °C and −196 °C). The prepared piezoresistive sensor is expected to have versatile applications in next-generation spatial pressure monitoring, wearable electronics, and sound visualization.

Abstract:The graphene oxide aqueous dispersion ink suitable for high‐precision 3D printing is prepared from graphene oxide with lamellar structure regulation. The graphene aerogel prepared has high printing accuracy (70 μm) and fidelity. After reduction, it is deposited on the adhesive tape, which exhibits excellent sensing characteristics and high flexibility, achieving improved sensing performance and device miniaturization. 3D printed graphene aerogels hold promise for flexible sensing fields due to their flexibility, low density, conductivity, and piezo‐resistivity. However, low printing accuracy/fidelity and stochastic porous networks have hindered both sensing performance and device miniaturization. Here, printable graphene oxide (GO) inks are formulated through modulating oxygen functional groups, which allows printing of self‐standing 3D graphene oxide aerogel microlattice (GOAL) with an ultra‐high printing resolution of 70 μm. The reduced GOAL (RGOAL) is then stuck onto the adhesive tape as a facile and large‐scale strategy to adapt their functionalities into target applications. Benefiting from the printing resolution of 70 μm, RGOAL tape shows better performance and data readability when used as micro sensors and robot e‐skin. By adjusting the molecular structure of GO, the research realizes regulation of rheological properties of GO hydrogel and the 3D printing of lightweight and ultra‐precision RGOAL, improves the sensing accuracy of graphene aerogel electronic devices and realizes the device miniaturization, expanding the application of graphene aerogel devices to a broader field such as micro robots, which is beyond the reach of previous reports.

Abstract:A multifunctional composite composed of a spacer fabric and a porous graphene‐based aerogel is proposed for sensing and impact protection applications. The combination of the mechanical properties of the spacer fabric and the electrical properties of the graphene‐based aerogel provides a versatile composite material with a strain sensitivity of 1.48, a temperature sensitivity of −0.004 °C−1, and a protection factor of 45%. The material is also lightweight, hydrophobic, and thermally insulating. It is therefore suitable for both high‐temperature (nearly 180 °C) and low‐temperature applications. Consequently, the developed multifunctional composite has potential for use as a building material and as a smart cushion for healthcare. In this work, an aerogel/spacer fabric composite is fabricated by a simple method, which has a strain sensitivity of 1.48 and a temperature sensitivity of −0.004 °C−1 within the temperature range 32–114 °C. It is lightweight, hydrophobic, thermally insulating, and capable of providing impact protection. Therefore, it is a promising material for healthcare applications, smart cushions, and building material.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based polymer/graphene aerogels with excellent mechanical properties are crucial for broad applications. The creation of such polymer/graphene aerogels remains challenging because of the poor dispersion and compatibility of polymer within the graphene matrix. By using the freezing-directed assembly of graphene under the assistance of surfactant, 3D macroporous polystyrene/graphene aerogels (MPS-GAs) with lightweight, superelastivity (80% strain), high strength (80kPa), and good electrical properties have been achieved in this study. The as-prepared MPS-GAs shows excellent electromechanical performance with stable cyclic resilient properties and sensitive resistance responses, thus making the MPS-GAs promising candidates for applications in actuators, elastic conductors, strain/pressure sensors, and wearable devices.

Abstract:Recently, macroporous graphene monoliths (MGMs), with ultralow density and good electrical conductivity, have been considered as excellent pressure sensors due to their excellent elasticity with a rapid rate of recovery. However, MGMs can only exhibit good sensitivity when the strain is higher than 20%, which is undesirable for touch‐type pressure sensors, such as artificial skin. Here, an innovative method for the fabrication of freestanding flexible graphene film with bubbles decorated on honeycomb‐like network is demonstrated. Due to the switching effect depended on “point‐to‐point” and “point‐to‐face” contact modes, the graphene pressure sensor has an ultrahigh sensitivity of 161.6 kPa−1 at a strain less than 4%, several hundred times higher than most previously reported pressure sensors. Moreover, the graphene pressure sensor can monitor human motions such as finger bending and pulse with a very low operating voltage of 10 mV, which is sufficiently low to allow for powering by energy‐harvesting devices, such as triboelectric generators. Therefore, the high sensitivity, low operating voltage, long cycling life, and large‐scale fabrication of the pressure sensors make it a promising candidate for manufacturing low‐cost artificial skin.

Abstract:In the new era of competitive smart electronics, the development of compressible multifunctional carbon aerogels is highly needed, but still faces enormous challenges. Here we demonstrate a robust strategy to fabricate multifunctional carbon aerogel via freeze-drying of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and graphene oxide (GO) co-stabilized Pickering emulsion gel followed by high-temperature annealing. The resulting carbon aerogel exhibits tunable mechanical, hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties due to varying the elemental composition and the pyrolysis of introduced polymers. The carbon aerogel is resilient against high compression strain up to 99 % and has ultralow density (1.82 mg/cm3). The CNF/GO/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene-derived carbon aerogel (CRA)-based sensor has shown desirable sensitivity (17.65 kPa−1), ultralow detection limit of pressure (60 Pa), and fast responsive time (130 ms), which is capable of detecting human activity, identifying spatial pressure distribution, and communicating with smartphones via Wi-Fi. Moreover, the carbon aerogel reveals effective thermal insulation and photothermal conversion performance. These results suggest the great potentials for developing lightweight and compressible carbon aerogels with multiple functions to meet various applications.

Abstract:Liquid metal (LM) with a low melting point is dispersed from a surface into nanodroplets by ultrasound and then blended with graphene oxide. By using a bubble template method, a new LM‐modified graphene aerogel (GA/LM) was formed. LM provides more conductive paths on the surface of the graphene nanosheets. The resulting GA/LM has low density, good elasticity, and mechanical stability. It was used as a high‐performance material to produce piezoresistive sensors: one example of the new avenues for applying porous materials and LM in a wide range of fields including wearable sensors, flexible electronics, and robotics. Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have gained considerable interest in their potential applications in fields such as soft robotics, electronic devices, and wearable technology. However, their widespread use has been limited due to the inherent brittleness of conventional hydrogels. In response to this challenge, we have engineered a multifunctional conductive hydrogel, characterized by dual physical cross-linking networks, using a simple, one-pot method. Our design incorporates acrylamide (AM), lauryl methacrylate (LMA), graphene (GN), silica amino spheres (SiO2-NH2), and 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazole chloride (ILs). Notably, the LMA, SiO2-NH2 spheres, and AM play key roles in energy dissipation through hydrophobic association and hydrogen bonding, serving as dynamic cross-linking points. This structural configuration endows our resultant PAM@SiO2-NH2/(ILs-GN) hydrogels with impressive tensile strains, peaking at an extraordinary 15,318%, along with super toughness measuring 51.4 MJ/m3 and self-healing capabilities. Moreover, the ILs facilitate effective dispersion of graphene, leading to superior conductivity and stable resistance changes in the hydrogel, with a conductivity measurement of 12 mS/cm. The hydrogel also demonstrates high sensitivity, with a gauge factor of 18.94 at a strain of 1200%. When implemented as a strain sensor, the hydrogel capably monitors a broad spectrum of human movements in real time, capturing both large-scale deformation and minute, nuanced motions. The culmination of these findings suggests the immense potential of our hydrogel sensors for use in flexible electronic skin applications, establishing them as promising candidates for multifunctional sensors and flexible electrodes.

This is a fundamental step towards providing natural and intuitive control over prosthetic devices, robotics, wearable and implantable devices etc., enabling users to interact with their environment in a more seamless and efficient manner, potentially paving the way for the realization of integrated detection platforms with flexible modulations and haptic sensing capabilities along with biocompatibility.

Abstract:<p>Developing a generalized route to effectively fabricate periodic mechanically flexible graphene aerogels across several size orders and whole structural integrity on a large scale for flexible electronics is still a challenge. Herein, inspired by bamboo's natural hierarchical structure, a general method is developed to effectively fabricate biomimetic cellular graphene fibers using hydrogen bubbles and ice simultaneously as templates, whose whole size ranges from micro to several centimeters. Owing to its superior mechanical flexibility demonstrated by the in situ scanning electron microscope test and intrinsically good electrical conductivity, its potential in flexible electronics such as sensors, supercapacitors, and Ni–Zn batteries is carefully investigated. It not only shows superior sensitivity in the monitoring of the pulse pressure in sensor devices but also directly serves as a promising binder, flexible scaffold, and conductive additive, as well as extra active material in the energy storage device without any extra additives. This strategy can also be extended to fabricate other configurations of graphene aerogels such as spring‐like type and bulk film, able to serve as the next generation of intelligent infrastructure for achieving multifunctional structural and functional tasks.</p>

Piezoresistive Effect of Superelastic Graphene Aerogel Spheres

Abstract:Graphene aerogels have recently become one of the most attractive carbon metamaterials due to their unique properties such as ultralight weight, large specific surface area, high electrical conductivity and excellent compressibility. However, there still remain some challenges to efficiently fabricate superelastic graphene aerogels through the facile and cost-effective processes and assemble them into a well-designed unity for wider applications. Here we show superelastic grouped graphene/carbon nanotube (CNT) aerogel spheres (GCSs) for intelligent piezoresistive sensors by wet-spinning technique. With the synergistic effect of graphene and CNTs, such grouped GCSs with core-shell structure annealed at 1000 degrees C show excellent elasticity and fatigue resistance, which are comparable to those of graphene spheres annealed at 2500 degrees C. The grouped GCSs can fully recover after compression at 95% strain, and still retain 70% of maximum stress with negligible plastic deformation and structural damage even after 1000 cycles at 70% strain. Significantly, the robust, superelastic and conductive GCSs are suitable for pressure sensors, exhibiting extraordinary cycling stability and long working life. Due to intact and tough shells, the small-scale GCSs with high sensitivity can be easily assembled into stretchable piezoresistive sensors with pixel arrays for spatial pressure distribution measurement and object shape recognition. An elastic and lamellar piezoresistive graphene/MXene aerogel

Abstract:Recently, wearable electronic devices and human–computer interaction are developing prosperously, which expands the requirement of flexible sensing materials. Graphene and its derivatives with extraordinary advantages are highly attractive precursors. However, it is difficult to assemble graphene into macroscopic cubes with good fatigue resistance performance. Here, we propose an efficient way to manufacture a lamellar-structural rGO aerogel with enhanced stiffness and deflection of lamellae, by using MXene as a rigidity additive. The addition of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) improves the mechanical and fatigue resistance properties of the aerogel, making it super compressible and elastic. The highly stable structure of the aerogel can withstand extremely high compressive strain of 90% and long-term compression at 50% strain for at least 10,000 cycles. The lamellar structure makes a great contribution to achieve good sensing performance including high linear sensitivity, low testing limit, wide testing strain range and quick response. These features make the MXene/rGO aerogel a promising sensing material for flexible wearable devices to monitor the subtle and obvious biosignals of the human body movement.

Abstract:The preparation of ultralight, superelastic and multifunctional graphene aerogels still remains a challenge. Herein we develop a silane-crosslinked and modified graphene aerogel (SGA) using a novel and simple method of chemical vapor deposition of methyltriethoxysilane into graphene oxide aerogels. The SGA is mechanically robust and shows fantastic properties satisfying multiple applications. Firstly, the SGA exhibits hitherto the highest compression recoverability (99.5%), as well as a high energy loss coefficient and cycle stability. Secondly, the compressible and ultralight (minimum density of 0.35 mg cm(-3)) SGA could serve as a fast and recyclable superadsorbent being able to adsorb various organic liquids with ultrahigh capacity (>1000 g g(-1)), which is almost the highest value among known adsorbents. Moreover, the electrical resistance of SGA is highly sensitive to compressive strain and applied pressure due to the enhanced connection between adjacent graphene sheets, which makes the SGA a great pressure sensor with high sensitivity (-67.1 kPa(-1)) and a low detection limit (<30 Pa); the SGA demonstrates great potential in real-time monitoring of subtle actions like the beat of water droplets. Therefore, the flyweight and mechanically robust SGA holds fantastic properties and great potential in multiple applications.
