Biodiversity and Conservation
Abstract:A central goal of biogeography and community ecology is to understand the processes underlying biodiversity patterns of various organisms at different scales. Over the past few decades, an increasing number of studies have focused on biodiversity patterns in freshwater ecosystems. Despite their ecological importance, knowledge of the assembly processes of aquatic communities in saline-alkali wetlands remains limited. Here, we investigated the taxonomic richness, abundance, compositions, and assembly processes of macroinvertebrate assemblages in 12 permanent saline-alkali wetlands (PSAWs) and 11 temporary saline-alkali wetlands (TSAWs). We found that abundance of aquatic macroinvertebrates was higher in TSAWs. Six species were habitat specialists of PSAWs, and seven species were habitat specialists of TSAWs. The composition of aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages varied significantly between PSAWs and TSAWs, and this variation was predominantly driven by habitat variables. Salinity was the most influential variable for aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages in PSAWs, whereas total suspended solids was the predominant variable for TSAWs. The community assembly of PSAWs and TSAWs were simultaneously driven by stochastic processes, with greater dispersal limitation and environmental distance decay in TSAWs. Our research revealed that both PSAWs and TSAWs substantially contribute to regional aquatic macroinvertebrate biodiversity. Considering the scarcity of saline-alkali wetlands and their historical neglect, especially for temporary wetlands, it is imperative to implement a blend of conservation strategies aimed at safeguarding and revitalizing their biodiversity. Specifically, for temporary saline-alkali wetlands, conservation efforts should prioritize ensuring seasonal inundation to promote macroinvertebrate diversity.
