Abstract:Controlling the release rate of the antifouling agent in antifouling coatings is a vital strategy to enhance the longevity of these coatings. Herein, the hollow titanium dioxide (TiO2) microspheres were prepared using surface-layer-absorption (SLA) template technology, and the preparation of single-shell TiO2 (1s-TiO2) and double-shell TiO2 (2s-TiO2) was controlled by a programmable heating process. The 1s-TiO2 and 2s-TiO2 hollow microspheres were used as a carrier to load the internationally recognized broad-spectrum antibacterial drug, 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT), in which the 2s-TiO2 hollow microspheres showed good BIT slow-release performance. In addition, the bacteriostatic activity of BIT generated by BIT@2s-TiO2 against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was evaluated by the bacteriostatic zone method and plate colony counting method. The BIT bactericidal effect of 2s-TiO2 was close to 100% after 3 h in seawater. Therefore, this study provides a direction for the development of new and long-lasting antifouling agents.Graphical AbstractThe construction and adsorption mechanism of the hollow titania microspheres were described with a detailed example of loading 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one.
