Abstract:A method for gram-scale synthesis of graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (g-C(3)N(4)QDs) was developed. The weight of the g-C(3)N(4)QDs was up to 1.32 g in each run with a yield of 66 wt%, and the purity was 99.96 wt%. The results showed that g-C(3)N(4)QDs exhibit a stable and strong ultraviolet photoluminescence at a wavelength of 365 nm. More interestingly, the g-C(3)N(4)QDs can be used as a high-efficiency, sensitive, and selective fluorescent probe to detect Fe3+ with a detection limit of 0.259 mu M.

Abstract:• A selective Fe 3+ detection method based on FRET between nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) and Rhodamine B (RhB) was constructed. • The occurrence of FRET was verified by Förster theory. Both the emission peaks of N-CQDs and RhB show selective detection ability for Fe 3+ ions. • This FRET-based sensing system shows high sensitivity at low Fe 3+ concentration with a limit of detection of 1.47 nM. In this work, a Fe 3+ detection method based on FRET system via nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) and Rhodamine B (RhB) was constructed. In this system, N-CQDs served as the donor whereas RhB served as the acceptor. The distance between the chosen D-A pair was determined to be 4.91 nm according to Förster theory. Only the presence of Fe 3+ hampered the FRET process and deactivated the electronic excitation energy of RhB. A dual-signal probe (RhB@N-CQDs) for selective detection of Fe 3+ was developed with a limit of detection of 1.47 nM to overcome the shortcomings of traditional detection methods at low concentrations.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are remarkable nanomaterials due to their promising excellent properties. Herein, a facile, economical and straight forward hydrothermal strategy has been developed to prepare fluorescent sulfur-doped carbon quantum dots from Vitamin B1. The as-prepared B1-CQDs have an average size of 3.2 nm and exhibit excitation-dependent PL behavior with a fluorescence quantum yield of 4.4%. Furthermore, the B1-CQDs could be applied as an efficient fluorescent probe for sensitively and selectively detection of Fe3+ with the detection limit as low as 177 nM.
Multicolor nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots and its application in the detection of Fe3+ ion

Abstract:In this paper, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) are synthesized by the hydrothermal method. N-CQDs exhibit strong fluorescence, and N-CQDs are well dispersed in water as well as in various organic solvents. N-CQDs emit multi-color fluorescence from blue to red, with wavelengths in the range of 450-650 nm without the need for purification. Furthermore, the fluorescence emission of N-CQDs was selectively quenched after adding Fe3+ ions. N-CQDs were used as a nanoprobe for the detection of Fe3+ ions, showing a good linear correlation between the fluorescence emission and the concentration of Fe3+ in the Fe3+ concentration range from 0 to 100 μM. The limit of detection (LOD) was 55.7 μM for Fe3+ in water and 40.2 μM in fetal bovine serum (FBS) samples. The study shows that the synthesized N-CQDs have low cost and great potential for application in biological analysis.

Abstract:The carbon quantum dots (CDs) based on carbonization of citric acid and tris(hydroxymethyl)aminome thane (Tris) in glycerinum as fluorescent probes for highly sensitive and selective detection of Fe3+ have been developed. The obtained CDs exhibit an excitation-dependent fluorescence behavior. The most intense fluorescence appears under 340 nm excitation and has a maximum emission peak at 414 nm. The CDs can keep good fluorescence intensity in a wide pH values from 2 to 11. The CDs can be used as highly sensitive and selective detection fluorescent probe of Fe3+, even in real sample analysis the CDs fluorescent probes can be used. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Highly luminescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are developed as fluorescent probes for selective detection of the heavy-ion Fe3+, where the CQDs exhibit excellent nontoxicity, functionalizability, sensitivity, and selectivity. Biomass-based CQDs and nitrogen-doped CQDs (N-CQDs) are synthesized for the selective detection of Fe3+ by using H2O2 as an oxidant and polyetherimide (PEI) as a nitrogen precursor by a green hydrothermal synthesis method. The prepared CQDs and N-CQDs exhibit an elliptical morphology and with an average particle size of 7 and 4 nm, respectively, and emit blue photoluminescence at 445 and 468 nm under excitation at 367 and 343 nm, respectively. The CQDs and N-CQDs exhibit good water solubility because of the abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl/carbonyl groups and graphic/pyrrolic/pyridinic nitrogen on the surfaces, giving rise to a quantum yield of about 24.2% and 30.7%, respectively. Notably, the Matrimony vine-PEI-based CQDs exhibit excellent Fe3+ selectivity and sensitivity relative to the Matrimony vine-based CQDs due to complexation of the numerous phenolic hydroxyl groups and nitrogen-containing groups with Fe3+, leading to increased fluorescence quenching, which greatly improves the sensitivity of detection. The minimum detection limit was 2.22 µmol L−1 with a complexation constant of 44.7.

Abstract:This study reports the successful preparation of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with a quantum yield of 15 % utilizing the hydrothermal method. Citric acid was employed as the carbon source, while 1,3-Diamino-2-propanol was utilized as the dopant. It was discovered that the emission of synthesized N-CQDs was dependent on concentration and excitation. By altering the N-CQDs concentration, the fluorescence emission peak was shifted from 453 to 574 nm, causing the emission to transition from blue to orange. The presence of multiple fluorescence emission centers within N-CQDs was confirmed through two-dimensional fluorescence matrix scanning. As the concentration of N-CQDs increased, the distance between these centers decreased, ultimately leading to aggregation. The energy or electrons were transferred as a result of the surface functional groups' interaction, which ultimately causes the fluorescence emission peak to shift to the red. Furthermore, an increase in concentration results in the formation of larger aggregates and larger sp 2 carbon domains, ultimately resulting in longer wavelengths. Because of the convenience of use, high sensitivity, and rapid response of the fluorescent probe detection approach, multi-color N-CQDs with tunable concentration were used for the identification of Fe 3+ , with a 10–200 μM linear detection range and limits of detection (LOD) of 0.56 μM.

Abstract:We have synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) via one-step hydrothermal method by using citric acid and urea as carbon sources, In order to solve the agglomeration effect of carbon quantum dots and increase its recognition sites, and then combined the N-CQDs with 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) to synthesize an self-assembled carbon quantum dots-3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid (N-CQDs/PTCA) composite, which has strong fluorescent properties. The fluorescence spectrum showed that the prepared self-assembled composite (N-CQDs/PTCA) has strong yellow-green light emission near 510 nm. The characterizations such as ultraviolet–visible absorption, X-ray electron spectroscopy, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy have confirmed that the N-CQDs and PTCA were combined together successfully. And the prepared self-assembled N-CQDs/PTCA was independent of excitation. It has stable and strong fluorescence properties and can be used as a fluorescent probe. The study also found that in the presence of Fe3+ ions, the fluorescence of self-assembled carbon quantum dots N-CQDs/PTCA will be quenched, and the quenching efficiency had a good linear relationship with the concentration of Fe3+ ions. Therefore, we proposed to use the self-assembled carbon quantum dots N-CQDs/PTCA as a fluorescent probe to detect Fe3+ selectively. The results showed that the method was fast, reliable, obvious detection signal, selective, and not affected by incubation time. The detection limit is 0.041 μM, which provides a new idea for the detection of Fe3+ ions by using self-assembled method and has broad application prospects.

Abstract:Nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) were synthesized using L-glutamic acid as raw material through a facile, effective and green hydrothermal method in one pot. Without any chemical reagents and further surface modifications, the NCQDs emit bright blue fluorescence with a high quantum yield of 17.8% due to the fluorescence enhancement effect of N dopant atoms on a surface of carbon quantum dots. Moreover, the NCQDs present a sensitive response to Fe3+ ions with a detection limit of 4.67 mu M (S/N = 3) through the variation in fluorescence with respect to the target concentration and based on electron transfer from the NCQDs to Fe3+ ions.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots surface doped with nitrogen (N-CQDs) were synthesized with quantum yield (24.9–66.4%) via an easy hydrothermal route while using citric acid as a precursor for carbon and varying concentrations of DL-Alaninol as the dopant. The as-prepared N-CQDs with adjustable fluorescence emission transformed from weak excitation-dependent to excitation-dependent and then to excitation-independent. After a detailed characterization and investigation, the N-CQDs were found to have a uniform particle size (1.76–3.07 nm) and good monodispersion. They were bearing similar functional groups on their surfaces but with different contents. The N/C ratio of N-CQDs increased gradually with the increasing contents of dopant, while the O/C ratio gradually decreased. The photoluminescence (PL) of (N-CQDs) has been explained by a proposed PL mechanism that involved quantum size effect and the energy levels by the surface state. When further investigated as a fluorescent probe for Fe3+ ion detection, the synthesized N-CQDs were found to be selectively and sensitively detecting Fe3+ ions. The N-CQD-based fluorescent probe was capable of detecting in a wider linear detection range and lower limits of detection (LODs).

Abstract:Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (N,S-CQDs) with a high quantum yield (69%) and excellent photoluminescent properties were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method using citric acid and cysteine as precursors. The cytotoxicity of N,S-CQDs was evaluated through the MTT assays using HepG2 cells as the target. The cell viability is still >95% after a 24 h incubation with particles in a concentration of up to 300 μg·mL−1, thereby indicating low cytotoxicity and excellent biocompatibility of N,S-CQDs. The emission spectra of the N,S-CQDs are nearly independent of the excitation wavelengths in the range from 280 to 380 nm and have the strongest fluorescence emission centered at 415 nm. Co-doping with N and S promotes the electron-transfer rate and coordination interaction between N,S-CQDs and Fe(III) ions which acts as a quencher of fluorescence. Fluorescence can be recovered, however, by addition of L-Cys. Hence, the N,S-CQDs act as a highly sensitive and selective “turn-off-on” probe for the determination of Fe(III) or Cys. The limits of detection are 14 nM for Fe(III) and 0.54 μM for Cys. The interferences by 17 common metal ions and heavy metal ions, 12 other quenchers and 16 amino acids were investigated and found to be tolerable. The probe was successfully applied for cellular imaging of Fe(III) in HepG2 cells by using fluorescence microscopy.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) with strong blue fluorescence and a high quantum yield of 88.9% were synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal treatment with citric acid (CA) and ethylenediamine (EDA) as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The blue fluorescence emission is independent of the excitation wavelengths. These N-GQDs dispersed well in water and ethyl alcohol and showed a highly selective and sensitive detection of hazardous and toxic Fe3+ in the range of 1600μmol/L to 6000μmol/L through a fluorescence quenching process with a detection limit of 2.37μmol/L. Based on the excellent sensitivity and selectivity of N-GQDs to heavy metal ions, paper-based sensors can be fabricated by inkjet printing, which are rapid but low cost. So the visual instant on-site identification of heavy metal ion will be realized in the future.

Abstract:The nitrogen-sulfur co-doped fluorescent carbon quantum dots (N/S-CQDs) were synthesized from sulfanilic acid. The fluorescence emission was independent of the excitation wavelength. In this experiment, the carbonization degree of the precursors was adjusted by solvent-thermal method to affect the sp(2) conjugated dimension of CQDs, thus affecting the fluorescence performance of CQDs. They are well dispersed in water and ethanol, and have high selectivity for Fe3+. The detection range is 0.025 similar to 0.4 mmol/L, and the detection limit is about 2.549 mu mol/L. The CQDs prepared in this experiment emit light indirectly through the surface defect state. When CQDs is illuminated by light, the carriers generated by photons will emit light at a very fast speed due to the surface defect state, so the excited electrons in CQDs can be easily transferred to Fe3+, making the surface of CQDs more complete, thus leading to the quenching of CQDs fluorescence.

Abstract:Rapid and sensitive fluorescence nanomaterials sensor with satisfactory selectivity has gained numerous importance for detecting multiple metal ions. Graphene quantum dot (GQD) has attracted a great deal of attentions. Herein, yellow emissive GQDs with a high quantum yield of 0.34 were achieved by nitrogen-doping. The asprepared N-GQDs exhibited excitation-independent behavior and high optical stability. Furthermore, based on the complexation between Fe3+ and N-GQDs, the fluorescence intensity of the N-GQDs could be greatly quenched by the addition of a small amount of Fe3+ ions. The linearity range is 0-80 mu M with a detection limit of 63 nM. For this reason, the proposed method was demonstrated to be selective and suitable for Fe3+ analysis in natural water samples. And, N-GQDs with the biosafety have the potentials for intracellular Fe3+ detection.

Abstract:This paper reports the detection of ferric ions (Fe3+) based on nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots. These nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots were synthesized via a hydrothermal route using northern Shaanxi potatoes as carbon sources and ammonium sulfate as nitrogen and sulfur sources. The quantum yields of the carbon quantum dots were found to be 16.96% and 4.23% with and without doping, respectively. The structural details, morphology, and optical properties of carbon quantum dots were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis), and fluorescence spectroscopy. The as-prepared co-doped carbon quantum dots were utilized as a fluorescent probe for detecting Fe3+ ions, where the fluorescence intensity of carbon quantum dots was remarkably quenched in the presence of Fe3+ ions. A good linear relationship for Fe3+ ion detection was obtained from 0 to 500 μmol/L with a detection limit as low as 0.26 μmol/L. Furthermore, the proposed method also provided satisfactory results in the tap water.

Abstract:At present, the contamination of water resources by heavy metal ions has posed a significant threat to human survival. Therefore, it is particularly critical to develop low-cost, easy-to-use, and highly efficient heavy metal detection technologies. In this work, a fast and cost-effective fluorescent probe for nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) was prepared using one-step hydrothermal method with citric acid (CA) as carbon source, and melamine as nitrogen source. The structural and optical characterizations of the resulting N-CDs were investigated in details. The results showed that the quantum yield of the prepared fluorescent probe was as high as 45 %, and an average fluorescence lifetime was about 7.80 ns. N-CDs have excellent water solubility and dispersibility, with an average size of 2.58 nm. N-CDs exhibited excellent specific responsiveness to Fe3+ and can be used as an effective method for detecting Fe3+ at low-concentrations (the concentrations of N-CDs as low as 0.24 μg/mL) using fluorescent probes. The linear response of the fluorescent probe N-CDs to Fe3+ was formed in the concentration range of 20-80 μM, and the detection limit was 3.18 μM. In addition, in the actual water samples analysis, the recovery rate reached 97.05-100.58 %. The prepared of N-CDs provide available Fe3+ fluorescent probes in the environment.

Abstract:The fluorescent boron, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (BNSCDs) were prepared by simple hydrothermal reaction of 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid and 2,5-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid at 200 degrees C for 8 h. The fluorescence of the BNSCDs could be quenched by Fe3+ based on the electron transfer between Fe3+ and BNSCDs, so a label-free, good selectivity and high sensitivity method for Fe3+ determination was established with linear range and LOD of 1.5-692 mu mol/L and 87 nmol/L, respectively. And then the fluorescent probe was employed for detection of Fe3+ in tap water, coal gangue, fly ash and food samples successfully. Moreover, the as-prepared BNSCDs could serve as a novel pH fluorescent probe in the range of pH 1.60-7.00, which could be attributed to the proton transfer of carboxyl groups on the surface of BNSCDs. More importantly, the pH fluorescent probe possesses fast, real-time and low toxicity, applying for intracellular pH fluorescence imaging in HIC, HIEC, LO2 and SMMC7721 cells. In view of its simplicity, timely response and outstanding compatibility, the as-fabricated BNSCDs show the potential applications in water quality and solid waste monitoring, food detection, real-time measuring of intracellular pH change in vitro.

Abstract:Carbon nanodots (C-dots) were synthesized by femtosecond laser ablation of graphite powders in polyethylene glycol (PEG(200N)) solutions with different graphite concentrations. The photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) of the C-dots was effectively enhanced by decreasing the graphite concentration, and its value could reach 21%. Detailed work showed that the C-dots prepared with a low raw material concentration possessed high PLQY because they contained fewer trap defects in the carbogenic core and a larger quantity of surface functional groups on the surface. Taking advantage of their high photoluminescence properties, the C-dots were used as effective fluorescent nanosensor probes for sensitive and selective detection of Fe3+ ions. Abstract:A novel dual-emitting fluorescence probe is developed for rapid and ultrasensitive detection of Fe3+. The nanoprobe is prepared by coating CdSe semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs) onto the surface of carbon nanodot (CND) doped TiO2 microspheres. The as-prepared nanoprobe exhibits the corresponding dual emissions at 436 and 596 nm for CNDs and CdSe, respectively, under a single excitation wavelength. The blue fluorescence of the CNDs is insensitive to Fe3+, whereas the orange emission of the CdSe SQDs is functionalized to be selectively quenched by Fe3+. The intensity ratio of /(436)//(596) shows a good linear relationship with the concentration of Fe3+ in the range of 10-9 to 10-5 M. The nanoprobe provides an effective platform for the reliable detection of Fe3+ with a detection limit as low as 10 nM. Besides, this ratiometric nanosensor exhibits good selectivity for Fe3+ over other metal ions. The results reveal that the nanoprobe could provide a sensitive sensor for rapid detection of Fe3+ with high selectivity and sensitivity. Moreover, 293T cells are used as models to achieve a potential application as a probe for monitoring Fe3+ in cells. Thus, these dual-emitting nanoprobes could work as an alternative to conventional fluorescence probes for biolabeling, sensing and other applications.
