Abstract:The analytical methods of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in different samples, e.g., vegetable oils, waters and soils, have been reviewed. The sample pretreatment steps play a key role during the analysis due to the very low PAHs contents. The pretreatment methods for water samples include liquid-liquid extraction, solid phase extraction, etc. The pretreatment methods for soil samples include Soxhlet extraction, ultrasonic extraction, microwave assisted extraction, accelerated solvent extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction, etc. The pretreatment methods for vegetable oils include saponification, liquid-liquid partitioning, caffeine complexation, solid phase extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction, etc. Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection are mainly used for separation and detection. The novel on-line determination method, e.g., the coupling of liquid chromatography with high performance liquid chromatography, or with gas chromatography may obtain ideal results. Fifty-two references are cited.

Abstract:In the process of pollutant analysis of environmental samples,pretreatment is essential,especially for trace contaminants which usually need concentration before analysis. Concentration can improve sensitivity of the method and lower the minimum detection limit,while concentrated environmental samples are much easier to be stored and transported compared with raw environmental samples. Pretreatment technologies for organic matter in environmental samples were reviewed,with traditional technologies including Soxhlet extraction,ultrasonic extraction,vacuum distillation method,gas chromatography and liquid chromatography as well as new technologies including supercritical fluid extraction technology, solid-phase microextraction,and blowing and sweeping collection method. The principles,advantages and disadvantages, scope of application of the technologies were reviewed and compared with each other. Extraction process of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by different technologies was analyzed,which provided a good reference for pretreatment process of other organic matters in environmental samples.

Abstract:BTEX are highly toxic environmental compounds that have carcinogenic and mutagenic effects in humans. These components are ubiquitous in environmental samples like water, air, and soil, which increase the risk of human exposure. Therefore, it is necessary to develop rapid, inexpensive, accurate, sensitive, and efficient sample-preparation and analytical methods to detect BTEX, thus reducing the harmful effect of BTEX on the environment and human health. This research reviewed the sources, fate, and distribution of BTEX in the general environment. In addition, a comprehensive and comparison of the current determination methods and different removal techniques in various environmental samples is discussed in detail. Also, the analytical and removal challenges and the futuristic development strategies established for BTEX are provided. In conclusion, the current review presents comprehensive evaluation on cutting-edge technologies in the field of BTEX determination and removal.

Abstract:The methods and their mechanisms to modify the adsorption capacity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to enhance the solidification strength, and improve the desorption rate to strengthen the self-purification capacity of soil were reviewed, respectively, through studying on adsorption/desorption behavior of PAHs, respective of remediating and treating PAHs contaminated soil. The efficacies of adding surfactants or adjusting water quality through several salts were proved, therefore, behaviors of PAHs adsorption/desorption toward soil with presence of both should be studied further.

Abstract:Soil pollution has become a global environmental issue in recent years,and the remediation for polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) has been more aware because of their potential carcinogenicity and teratogenicity.Bioremediation is a very promising new environmental technology in light of its economic and no secondary pollution characteristics.Based on up-date publications worldwide,this paper mainly review PAHs and PCBs pollution remediation by microbial procedures in soil by focusing on introduction of development on screening microbial species which can degrade and adsorption these two organic pollutants,as well as on the methods and mechanism of microbial remediation to proceed systematically integrated effect.At last,we sum the trend of this researching field in China.

Abstract:This paper is aimed to present a general review on the enhanced measures to the bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contaminated soil.Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are well known as a group of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and more than 90% of PAHs present in the soil,which are toxic to the environment and pose as a hazard in food chain to human health. Bioremediation technology is the primary method to treat the PAHs contaminated soil and the enhanced measures of bioremediation treatment are essential to improve the degradation rate and adapt to the needs of field application.Referring to the reported literature at home and abroad in recent years,this paper comes out with a detail introduction and discussion on the principles and application of physicalchemical and biological based enhancement.The enhanced measures of physical-chemical included the application of surfactants,nutrient addition and co-metabolic substrate addition as well as the electron acceptors addition and utilization of chemical oxidants.The enhanced measures of bioremediation included the addition of highly efficient PAH-degrading bacteria and immobilization of bacteria,utilization of mycorrhizal fungi and application of bio-surfactants.The combined remediation of phytoremediation and microorganism on the PAHs contaminated soil is an important direction of development and field application technology.At the same time,safety evaluation in the process of enhanced bioremediation is necessary in order to avoid new pollution and other security risks to happen.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are typical kinds of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) which are toxic, mutagenic, teratogenic and carcinogenic. They persist for long period in soils due to their highly hydrophobic feature. They decrease the total soil microbial biomass, activity and the soil bioavailability, change the composition of the soil ecosystem, and pose potential risk to human and ecological health. This paper aims to provide a review particularly for the bioremediation technologies and influencing factors in the biodegradation process of the PAHs-contaminated soils. The technologies and influencing factors discussed here include microbial remediation, composting, phytoremediation, enzymes in the degradation process, inhibition and co-metabolism. Meanwhile, for each of the content, theories are discussed on the combination of current studies reported in the specialized literature.

Abstract:Aromatic hydrocarbons are unsaturated compounds containing carbon and hydrogen that form single aromatic ring, or double, triple, or multiple fused rings. This review focuses on the research progress of aromatic hydrocarbons represented by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (including halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), benzene and its derivatives including toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (o-, m- and p-), styrene, nitrobenzene, and aniline. Due to the toxicity, widespread coexistence, and persistence of aromatic hydrocarbons in the environment, accurate assessment of exposure to aromatic hydrocarbons is essential to protect human health. The effects of aromatic hydrocarbons on human health are mainly derived from three aspects: different routes of exposure, the duration and relative toxicity of aromatic hydrocarbons, and the concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons which should be below the biological exposure limit. Therefore, this review discusses the primary exposure routes, toxic effects on humans, and key populations, in particular. This review briefly summarizes the different biomarker indicators of main aromatic hydrocarbons in urine, since most aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites are excreted via urine, which is more feasible, convenient, and non-invasive. In this review, the pretreatment and analytical techniques are compiled systematically for the qualitative and quantitative assessments of aromatic hydrocarbons metabolites such as gas chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography with multiple detectors. This review aims to identify and monitor the co-exposure of aromatic hydrocarbons that provides a basis for the formulation of corresponding health risk control measures and guide the adjustment of the exposure dose of pollutants to the population.

Abstract:Major sources of aromatic amines in the environment include industry and non-industrial sources.The toxicological properities of aryl amines are mianly characterized by their ability to form DNA adducts and to cause damage to DNA.Currently,the International Agency for Research on Cancer(IARC) classified six aromatic amines as a human carcinogenic or probably carcinogenic to humans.The European Union(EU) included many amines in the list of priority pollutants which should be monitored in environmental waters.Aromatic amines,in low concentrations in environment and the matrices of environmental samples,were often complex.To achieve low detection limits and reliable determination results,pretreatment steps for sample extraction,enrichment,and concentration prior to analysis were very necessary.Several pretreatment sample techniques for the trace extraction,enrichment,and concentration of aromatic amines before their determinations,including ion-pair liquid-liquid extraction(IP-LLE),solid-phase extraction(SPE),and solid-phase microextraction(SPME) were reviewed.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are frequently detected in soil. Their biological toxicity and carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic effects pose a great threat to the ecological environment and human health. Firstly, the sources, physicochemical properties, and environmental hazards of PAHs are reviewed in this paper, and then their pollution status and different methods for their detection in soil are described in detail. The remediation technologies to treat pollution in the field and farmland are compared, and the technical status and factors influencing phytomicrobial remediation of PAHs in contaminated soil are evaluated in the most comprehensive way. The mechanisms of phytomicrobial remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil under different conditions are innovatively discussed. Additionally, the regulation mechanism of enzymes involved in plant and microbial degradation of PAHs in soils is studied. This is the first study on the regulation mechanism of degradation enzyme in a PAHs review. The aim of this paper is to review the pollution status, remediation technologies, mechanisms, and biodegradation actions of PAHs in soil. This review creatively provides reliable technical support for strengthening soil remediation and environmental management.

Abstract:This paper aims to provide a review of the analytical extraction techniques for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils. The extraction technologies described here include Soxhlet extraction, ultrasonic and mechanical agitation, accelerated solvent extraction, supercritical and subcritical fluid extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, solid phase extraction and microextraction, thermal desorption and flash pyrolysis, as well as fluidised-bed extraction. The influencing factors in the extraction of PAHs from soil such as temperature, type of solvent, soil moisture, and other soil characteristics are also discussed. The paper concludes with a review of the models used to describe the kinetics of PAH desorption from soils during solvent extraction.

Abstract:There are various types of volatile organic compounds（VOCs） in environmental water.These compounds with lower threshold concentration usually exist in water at the level of ng/L~μg/L.In this paper,the progresses of pretreatment ment techniques for the analysis of VOCs from 2003 are reviewed.Eight sample preparation methods including： headspace-sigle drop microextraction（HS-SDME）,hollow fiber-liquid phase microextraction（HF-LPME）,dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction（DLLME）,head space-solid phase microextraction（HS-SPME）,stir bar sorptive extraction（SBSE）,static headspace（HS）,purge and trap（PT）,and inside needle capillary adsorption trap（INCAT） are in troduced.The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are presented,and the prospect for the development of analysis methods for VOCs is discussed.

Abstract:There are large areas of contaminated soils by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in China and all over the world, posing great threats to ecology health and human lives. A novel and prospective analysis method of PAHs for environmental samples such as soils and plants is urgently needed for risk assessment of agricultural products and soil remediation. By using the ultrosonication extraction and HPLC/UV analysis techniques, a simple, available and instructive analysis method of PAHs for soil and plant samples was experimented. The recoveries of six tested PAHs including phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene, fluoranthene, benzo[a]anthracene, and benzo[a]pyrene for ryegrass samples were 76.00%~103.1%, with relatively standard deviations (RSD) less than 4.1%. As to the soil samples including the dry soil (DS) and wet soil (WS, 50% of the field holding capacity), the recoveries of these PAHs were always larger than 85% with RSD smaller than 3.1%. In addition, the recoveries of PAHs for DS samples were generally higher than those for WS ones, while the RSD of the former was smaller than that of the latter. This potentially useful and prospective analysis method for environmental soil and plant samples would be of great importance for the soil restoration and risk assessment.

Abstract:Base on the comprehensive literature review,the transport and transformation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in groundwater are introduced in two aspects,adsorption and biodegradation. The summary of PAHs adsorption process researching methods is presented,including isothermal equilibrium adsorption,non-equilibrium adsorption and development and application of adsorption model. The discussion on PAHs biodegradation is analyzed,and the common pathway of PAHs degradation is given. The mathematical modeling and simulation of the transport and transformation of PAHs in the aquifer are also introduced. More research in adsorption mechanism and competitive sorption of PAHs with the aquifer solid phase,bioremediation of high molecular weight PAHs,transport,fate and remediation of PAHs in groundwater are recommended to help solving the problems of PAHs contamination.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, the research progress on the extraction and analysis methods of petroleum hydrocarbon in water and sediment were reviewed. The principle, application scope, advantages, disadvantages and applications of various extraction methods and determination methods are summarized systematically. At present, liquid-liquid extraction is the most commonly used method to extract petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) in water samples, while Soxhlet extraction and ultrasonic extraction are the most commonly used methods to extract PHCs in sediment samples. Gas chromatography is the main development direction to determine the concentration of specific components of PHCs.
