Abstract:Climate change affects ecosystems at several levels: by altering the spatial distribution of individual species, by locally rewiring interspecific interactions, and by reorganizing trophic networks at larger scales. The dynamics of marine food webs are becoming more and more sensitive to spatial processes and connections in the seascape. As a case study, we study the atlantification of the Barents Sea: we compare spatio-temporal subsystems at three levels: the identity of key organisms, critically important interactions and the entire food web. Network analysis offers quantitative measurements, including centrality indices, trophic similarity indices, a topological measure of interaction asymmetry and network-level measures. We found that atlantification alters the identity of key species (boreal demersals becoming hubs), results in strongly asymmetric interactions (dominated by haddock), changes the dominant regulation regime (from bottom-up to wasp-waist control) and makes the food web less modular. Since the results of food web analysis may be quite sensitive to network construction, the aggregation of food web data was explicitly studied to increase the robustness of food web analysis. We found that an alternative, mathematical aggregation algorithm better preserves some network properties (e.g. density) of the original, unaggregated network than the biologically inspired aggregation into functional groups. Abstract:These results showed that species richness and ecological uniqueness may be negatively correlated at large spatial extents, and that the form of the relationship is likely to depend on the species richness profile of the area. The significant influence of climate on the ecological uniqueness of macrophyte assemblages suggests that changes in climate and land use may shape unique macrophyte assemblages. Thus, conservation strategies should consider protection measures especially in the northern areas with unique macrophyte species assemblages, as they are expected to face many changes in the future. Identifying areas with high ecological uniqueness at different scales is important for efficient implementation of biodiversity conservation practices. Understanding spatial variation of species composition at different scales is essential for efficient conservation planning. Here, we investigate ecological uniqueness patterns of freshwater macrophyte assemblages at continental extents. We explored the similarities and differences in the patterns of ecological uniqueness between Europe and North America in relation to species richness and environmental variables using macrophyte presence–absence data in 50 × 50 km grid cells. To describe the ecological uniqueness of macrophyte assemblages, we used an index called 'local contribution to beta diversity' (LCBD). First, we used linear regression to evaluate the relationship between ecological uniqueness and species richness. Second, the variation of ecological uniqueness was modelled using environmental variables in generalized additive modelling (GAM). Third, boosted regression tree (BRT) analysis was performed with the same environmental variables to compare BRT results with the results from GAM. The results revealed relatively similar patterns of ecological uniqueness in both continents. The relationship between species richness and ecological uniqueness was overall negative but showed differences in the form and degree of the relationship between Europe and North America. The main driver of ecological uniqueness in both continents was mean annual temperature, with further effects associated with annual precipitation, elevation range, alkalinity and the proportion of freshwaters in a grid cell. Synthesis. Our results showed that species richness and ecological uniqueness may be negatively correlated at large spatial extents, and that the form of the relationship is likely to depend on the species richness profile of the area. Abstract:How food webs are structured has major implications for their stability and dynamics. While poorly studied to date, arctic food webs are commonly assumed to be simple in structure, with few links per species. If this is the case, then different parts of the web may be weakly connected to each other, with populations and species united by only a low number of links. We provide the first highly resolved description of trophic link structure for a large part of a high-arctic food web. For this purpose, we apply a combination of recent techniques to describing the links between three predator guilds (insectivorous birds, spiders, and lepidopteran parasitoids) and their two dominant prey orders (Diptera and Lepidoptera). The resultant web shows a dense link structure and no compartmentalization or modularity across the three predator guilds. Thus, both individual predators and predator guilds tap heavily into the prey community of each other, offering versatile scope for indirect interactions across different parts of the web. The current description of a first but single arctic web may serve as a benchmark toward which to gauge future webs resolved by similar techniques. Targeting an unusual breadth of predator guilds, and relying on techniques with a high resolution, it suggests that species in this web are closely connected. Thus, our findings call for similar explorations of link structure across multiple guilds in both arctic and other webs. From an applied perspective, our description of an arctic web suggests new avenues for understanding how arctic food webs are built and function and of how they respond to current climate change. It suggests that to comprehend the community-level consequences of rapid arctic warming, we should turn from analyses of populations, population pairs, and isolated predator-prey interactions to considering the full set of interacting species.

Abstract:Abstract Accurate characterisation of ecological communities with respect to their biodiversity and food-web structure is essential for conservation. However, combined empirical study of biodiversity and multi-trophic food webs at a large spatial and temporal resolution has been prohibited by the lack of appropriate access to such data from natural systems. Here, we assessed biodiversity and food-web characteristics across a 700 km 2 riverine network over seasons using environmental DNA. We found contrasting biodiversity patterns between major taxonomic groups. Local richness showed statistically significant, season-dependent increases and decreases towards downstream location within the catchment for fish and bacteria, respectively. Meanwhile, invertebrate richness remained spatially unchanged but varied across seasons. The structure of local food webs, such as link density and nestedness, also varied across space and time. However, these patterns did not necessarily mirror those observed for biodiversity and functional feeding characteristics. Our results suggest that biodiversity patterns and food-web dynamics are not directly scalable to each other even at the same spatial and temporal scales. In order to conserve species diversity as well as the functional trophic integrity of communities, patterns of biodiversity and food-web characteristics must thus be jointly studied.

Assessing weak interaction and threshold effects of the trophic field overlap index on the relationship between species uniqueness and centrality in food webs

Abstract:In addition to considering the influence of a species on other species (centrality), the identification of keystone species should also consider whether it has a unique network position (uniqueness). Clarifying the correlation between species centrality and uniqueness, or whether central species exhibit positional redundancy in food webs, can enhance the understanding of mechanisms stabilizing food webs. However, the findings from analyses utilizing different measures of uniqueness are contentious. In this study, we constructed the food web of the eutrophic Zhangze Lake (northern China) using stable isotopes to estimate the contribution of food sources to consumers. We then calculated trophic field overlap index to assess the uniqueness of species using this quantified food web information. Additionally, we analyzed how the weak interaction and the threshold value under which interactions are considered as weak influence the relationship between species uniqueness and centrality. The findings revealed that, in contrast to the traditional trophic field overlap index, the improved index identified the basal species with the strongest trophic interactions with other species and the filter‐feeding fishes with the fewest interactors as the most unique species, while the basal species were considered the least unique under the traditional index. The ranking results of the traditional index and the centrality showed a significant negative correlation, whereas the improved index displayed a positive correlation, which was caused by the comprehensive consideration of threshold and weak interaction. In addition, based on the data analysis, the suggestion was given for the selection of indices used to identify unique species, and whether central species have positional redundancy was explored. The methodology used in study provides a practical solution for the identification of the most unique species, points out and solves the problems faced in the uniqueness analysis, and advances the understanding of the mechanisms underlying food web robustness.

Abstract:Antarctic biodiversity is affected by seasonal sea-ice dynamics driving basal resource availability. To (1) determine the role of intraspecific dietary variability in structuring benthic food webs sustaining Antarctic biodiversity, and (2) understand how food webs and the position of topologically central species vary with sea-ice cover, single benthic individuals' diets were studied by isotopic analysis before sea-ice breakup and afterwards. Isotopic trophospecies (or Isotopic Trophic Units) were investigated and food webs reconstructed using Bayesian Mixing Models. As nodes, these webs used either ITUs regardless of their taxonomic membership (ITU-webs) or ITUs assigned to species (population-webs). Both were compared to taxonomic-webs based on taxa and their mean isotopic values. Higher resource availability after sea-ice breakup led to simpler community structure, with lower connectance and linkage density. Intra-population diet variability and compartmentalisation were crucial in determining community structure, showing population-webs to be more complex, stable and robust to biodiversity loss than taxonomic-webs. The core web, representing the minimal community 'skeleton' that expands opportunistically while maintaining web stability with changing resource availability, was also identified. Central nodes included the sea-urchin Sterechinus neumayeri and the bivalve Adamussium colbecki , whose diet is described in unprecedented detail. The core web, compartmentalisation and topologically central nodes represent crucial factors underlying Antarctica's rich benthic food web persistence.

While total moth abundance has declined, species richness has simultaneously increased over the study period, but with rates accelerating with latitude. In addition, we revealed a latitudinal pattern in temporal variability—the northernmost locations exhibited higher variability over time, as quantified by both metrics of richness and aggregated species population trends.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Main conclusions</h3><p>When combined, our findings likely reflect an influx of species expanding their ranges poleward in response to warming. The overall decline in abundance and the latitudinal effect on temporal variability highlight potentially severe consequences of global change for community structure and integrity across high‐latitude regions. Importantly, our results underscore that increases in species richness may be paralleled by a loss of individuals, which in turn might affect higher trophic levels. Our findings suggest that the ongoing global species redistribution is affecting both community structure and stability over time, leading to compounded and partly opposing effects of global change depending on which biodiversity dimension we focus on.</p></section>

Abstract:While direct threats to species are well studied, indirect threats arising from species interactions are less documented, especially on a macroecological scale. In this study, we show the importance of considering interactions to understand threats to biodiversity. By analyzing the vulnerability of European vertebrate food webs to six major anthropogenic threats, we highlight the far‐reaching impact of pressures such as direct exploitation and agricultural intensification, shedding light on the broader consequences of human activities on biodiversity. Vertebrate species worldwide are currently facing significant declines in many populations. Although we have gained substantial knowledge about the direct threats that affect individual species, these threats only represent a fraction of the broader vertebrate threat profile, which is also shaped by species interactions. For example, threats faced by prey species can jeopardize the survival of their predators due to food resource scarcity. Yet, indirect threats arising from species interactions have received limited investigation thus far. In this study, we investigate the indirect consequences of anthropogenic threats on biodiversity in the context of European vertebrate food webs. We integrated data on trophic interactions among over 800 terrestrial vertebrates, along with their associated human‐induced threats. We quantified and mapped the vulnerability of various components of the food web, including species, interactions, and trophic groups to six major threats: pollution, agricultural intensification, climate change, direct exploitation, urbanization, and invasive alien species and diseases. Direct exploitation and agricultural intensification were two major threats for terrestrial vertebrate food webs: affecting 34% and 31% of species, respectively, they threaten 85% and 69% of interactions in Europe. By integrating network ecology with threat impact assessments, our study contributes to a better understanding of the magnitude of anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity.

Abstract:Quantification of the physical and biological factors that influence the spatial structuring of food webs is central to inform effective resource management. We used baseline‐corrected stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) of 63 invertebrate and fish to investigate food web structure across a continental shelf gradient—the Celtic Sea Shelf in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. Hierarchical clustering on δ13C and δ15N showed that the shelf food web is characterized by four trophic levels with trophic groups spread across pelagic and benthic trophic pathways. Four biomass‐weighted isotopic diversity metrics provided indicators on the status of the system, showing a relatively complex food web with high trophic redundancy at intermediate trophic levels suggesting resilience to disturbances. Two sets of statistical models, at the community scale and for each trophic group, identified five distinct trophic assemblages associated with different chlorophyll a concentrations, water depth, and bottom temperature. A cold, vertically mixed‐water assemblage over the outer shelf comprised the largest habitat and most diverse assemblage, highlighting the importance of cold productive conditions in the Celtic Sea. Trophic group model results were used to generate spatial area predictions to compare functioning of groups using isotopic overlap (similarity and nestedness) metrics. Isotopic niche area was larger (spanning two trophic levels) in shallow habitats, but not in habitats underlying high primary production or nutrient‐rich water masses, suggesting stronger benthic‐pelagic trophic coupling in inner shelf habitats. Results suggest that depth and intensity of pelagic production are major drivers of trophic structure and functioning of Celtic Sea communities.

Abstract:Spatial and trophic processes profoundly influence biodiversity, yet ecological theories often treat them independently. The theory of island biogeography and related theories on metacommunities predict higher species richness with increasing area across islands or habitat patches. In contrast, food-web theory explores the effects of traits and network structure on coexistence within local communities. Exploring the mechanisms by which landscape configurations interact with food-web dynamics in shaping metacommunities is important for our understanding of biodiversity. Here, we use a meta-food-web model to explore the role of landscape configuration in determining species richness and show that when habitat patches are interconnected by dispersal, more species can persist on smaller islands than predicted by classical theory. When patch sizes are spatially aggregated, this effect flattens the slope of the species–area relationship. Surprisingly, when landscapes have random patch-size distributions, the slope of the species–area relationships can even flip and become negative. This could be explained by higher biomass densities of lower trophic levels that then support species occupying higher trophic levels, which only persist on small and well-connected patches. This highlights the importance of simultaneously considering landscape configuration and local food-web dynamics to understand drivers of species–area relationships in metacommunities. Abstract:Abstract Habitat fragmentation and eutrophication have strong impacts on biodiversity. Metacommunity research demonstrated that reduction in landscape connectivity may cause biodiversity loss in fragmented landscapes. Food-web research addressed how eutrophication can cause local biodiversity declines. However, there is very limited understanding of their cumulative impacts as they could amplify or cancel each other. Our simulations of meta-food-webs show that dispersal and trophic processes interact through two complementary mechanisms. First, the ‘rescue effect’ maintains local biodiversity by rapid recolonization after a local crash in population densities. Second, the ‘drainage effect’ stabilizes biodiversity by preventing overshooting of population densities on eutrophic patches. In complex food webs on large spatial networks of habitat patches, these effects yield systematically higher biodiversity in heterogeneous than in homogeneous landscapes. Our meta-food-web approach reveals a strong interaction between habitat fragmentation and eutrophication and provides a mechanistic explanation of how landscape heterogeneity promotes biodiversity.

Small world patterns in food webs

Abstract:The analysis of some species-rich, well-defined food webs shows that they display the so called Small World behavior shared by a number of disparate complex systems. The three systems analysed (Ythan estuary web, Silwood web and the Little Rock lake web) have different levels of taxonomic resolution, but all of them involve high clustering and short path lengths between species. Additionally, the distribution of connections with fat-tail power law behavior. These features suggest that communities might be self-organized in such a way that high homeostasis to perturbations (with short transient times to recovery) would be at work. The consequences for ecological theory are outlined.

Abstract:The trophic relationships interconnecting marine organisms together into a dynamic trophic network drive the structure and the functioning of the entire ecosystem. Since the flow of carbon within trophic networks is controlled by a variety of functional traits related to food acquisition and individual survival, it is crucial to understand how functional diversity relates to marine ecosystems properties such as the resistance and resilience against perturbations. In the Arctic, marine ecosystems are facing stronger and faster environmental changes than anywhere on Earth, leading to profound perturbations in the planktonic assemblages at the base of the trophic networks. While it is known that mesozooplankton plays a crucial role of matter and energy hub within marine Arctic food web, the precise role of the diverse mesozooplankton functional groups in carbon circulation and in marine ecosystems functioning remains poorly known. We coupled a trait‐based approach of mesozooplankton diversity to an ecological network analysis approach to test whether similar mesozooplankton functional groups played similar ecological roles in three Arctic ecosystems during the summer period. We formed nine mesozooplankton functional groups by gathering different species according to their feeding strategies. Then we implemented those into inverse food web models (LIM) describing three contrasted Arctic ecosystems. In each ecosystem, we performed sensitivity analysis experiments where each mesozooplankton functional group was removed one at a time. Our results showed that, although the same main functional groups composed the three ecosystems, the few outstanding changes observed in the carbon circulation within the food web were strongly controlled by both the initial whole‐network properties and productivity of the ecosystem. The various roles played by a given mesozooplankton functional group in the ecosystem depend on its impact on carbon flows through the food web it belongs to. As a result, identifying which functional groups could be threatened, and which carbon flows could be altered by climate change is critical information to predict future ecosystems functioning.

Abstract:Using streams spanning a local temperature gradient in both Iceland and Russia, we found that warming led to simpler food webs. We also found more herbivorous invertebrates with a diet of algae in warmer streams. These findings provide new insights into how warming can alter energy flow in freshwater ecosystems. The physical effects of climate warming have been well documented, but the biological responses are far less well known, especially at the ecosystem level and at large (intercontinental) scales. Global warming over the next century is generally predicted to reduce food web complexity, but this is rarely tested empirically due to the dearth of studies isolating the effects of temperature on complex natural food webs. To overcome this obstacle, we used 'natural experiments' across 14 streams in Iceland and Russia, with natural warming of up to 20°C above the coldest stream in each high‐latitude region, where anthropogenic warming is predicted to be especially rapid. Using biomass‐weighted stable isotope data, we found that community isotopic divergence (a universal, taxon‐free measure of trophic diversity) was consistently lower in warmer streams. We also found a clear shift towards greater assimilation of autochthonous carbon, which was driven by increasing dominance of herbivores but without a concomitant increase in algal stocks. Overall, our results support the prediction that higher temperatures will simplify high‐latitude freshwater ecosystems and provide the first mechanistic glimpses of how warming alters energy transfer through food webs at intercontinental scales.

Abstract:Introduction: Increasing temperature of the global ocean alters the spatial behavior of a number of species. From the northern Atlantic Ocean, species may shift their area towards the poles. This results in the atlantification of the Barents Sea, raising questions about possible changes in species composition, community structure and community control. Methods: We address the question whether possible changes in community control can be detected and quantified based on simple network analytical measures applied to the food web. Based on unweighted (binary) and undirected (symmetric) data, we quantify the strength of direct and indirect interactions in the network, represent the most asymmetric effects in the asymmetry graph composed of directed and weighted links and study the overlap among trophic niches of organisms. Results and discussion: We support earlier findings suggesting that the ecosystem can possibly be characterized by wasp-waist control. This would mean that focusing management efforts on intermediate trophic levels is of high importance, providing indirect benefit for organisms also at lower and higher trophic levels.

Abstract:Predation is an important ecological process, particularly in arctic environments, which undergo rapid environmental change. Vertebrate trophic networks from a fragmented terrestrial ecosystem on northern Ellesmere Island and north Greenland were less complex, had more specialized interactions, and were more nested and more modular than random expectations. Networks also varied among several isolated peninsulas, which highlights the often‐complex ecological responses to environmental characteristics. Predation is an important ecological process that can significantly impact the maintenance of ecosystem services. In arctic environments, the relative ecological importance of predation is thought to be increasing due to climate change, partly because of increased productivity with rising temperatures. Therefore, understanding predator–prey interactions in arctic ecosystems is vital for the sustainable management of these northern regions. Network theory provides a framework for quantifying the structures of ecological interactions. In this study, we use dietary observations on mammalian and avian predators in a high arctic region, including isolated peninsulas on Ellesmere Island and north Greenland, to construct bipartite trophic networks. We quantify the complexity, specialization, and nested as well as modular structures of these networks and also determine if these properties varied among the peninsulas. Mammal prey remains were the dominant diet item for all predators, but there was spatial variation in diet composition among peninsulas. The predator–prey networks were less complex, had more specialized interactions, and were more nested and more modular than random expectations. However, the networks displayed only moderate levels of modularity. Predator species had less specialized interactions with prey than prey had with predators. All network properties differed among the peninsulas, which highlights that ecosystems often show complex responses to environmental characteristics. We suggest that gaining knowledge about spatial variation in the characteristics of predator–prey interactions can enhance our ability to manage ecosystems exposed to environmental perturbations, particularly in high arctic environments subject to rapid environmental change.

Abstract:We know little about how ecosystems of different complexity will respond to global warming1,2,3,4,5. Microcosms permit experimental control over species composition and rates of environmental change. Here we show using microcosm experiments that extinction risk in warming environments depends on trophic position but remains unaffected by biodiversity. Warmed communities disproportionately lose top predators and herbivores, and become increasingly dominated by autotrophs and bacterivores. Changes in the relative distribution of organisms among trophically defined functional groups lead to differences in ecosystem function beyond those expected from temperature-dependent physiological rates. Diverse communities retain more species than depauperate ones, as predicted by the insurance hypothesis, which suggests that high biodiversity buffers against the effects of environmental variation because tolerant species are more likely to be found6,7. Studies of single trophic levels clearly show that warming can affect the distribution and abundance of species2,4,5, but complex responses generated in entire food webs greatly complicate inferences based on single functional groups.

Robust Patterns in Food Web Structure

Abstract:We analyze the properties of seven community food webs from a variety of environments--including freshwater, marine-freshwater interfaces and terrestrial environments. We uncover quantitative unifying patterns that describe the properties of the diverse trophic webs considered and suggest that statistical physics concepts such as scaling and universality may be useful in the description of ecosystems. Specifically, we find that several quantities characterizing these diverse food webs obey functional forms that are universal across the different environments considered. The empirical results are in remarkable agreement with the analytical solution of a recently proposed model for food webs.

Abstract:The consequences of climate change and anthropogenic stressors, such as habitat loss and overexploitation, are threatening the subsistence of species and communities across the planet. Therefore, it is crucial that we analyze the impact of environmental perturbations on the diversity, structure and function of ecosystems. In this study, in silico simulations of biodiversity loss were carried out on the marine food web of Caleta Potter (25 de Mayo/King George Island, Antarctica), where global warming has caused critical changes in the abundance and distribution of benthic and pelagic communities over the last 30 years. We performed species removal, considering their degree and trophic level, and including four different thresholds on the occurrence of secondary extinctions. We examined the impact of extinctions on connectance, modularity and stability of the food web. We found different responses for these properties depending on the extinction criteria used, e.g., large increase in modularity and rapid decrease in stability when the most connected and relatively high-trophic-level species were removed. Additionally, we studied the complexity–stability relationship of the food web, and found two regimes: (1) high sensitivity to small perturbations, suggesting that Potter Cove would be locally unstable, and (2) high persistence to long-range perturbations, suggesting global stability of this ecosystem.

Abstract:Patterns of species rarity have long fascinated ecologists, yet most of what we know about the natural world stems from studies of common species. A large proportion of freshwater plant species has small range sizes and are therefore considered rare. However, little is known about the mechanisms and geographical distribution of rarity in the aquatic realm and to what extent diversity of rare species in freshwater plants follows their terrestrial counterparts. Here, we present the first in-depth analysis of geographical patterns, potential deterministic ecogeographical factors and projected scenarios of freshwater vascular plant rarity using 50 × 50 km grid cells across Europe (41°N-71°N) and North America (25°N-78°N). Our results suggest that diversity of rare species shows different patterns in relation to latitude on the two continents, and that hotspots of rarity concentrate in a relatively small proportion of the European and North American land surface, especially in mountainous as well as in climatically rare and stable areas. Interestingly, we found no differences among alternative rarity definitions and measures when delineating areas with notably high diversity of rare species. Our findings also indicate that few variables, namely a combination of current climate, Late Quaternary climate-change velocity and human footprint, are able to accurately predict the location of continental centers of rare species diversity. However, these relationships are not geographically homogeneous, and the underlying factors likely act synergistically. Perhaps more importantly, we provide empirical evidence that current centers of rare species diversity are characterized by higher anthropogenic impacts and might shrink disproportionately within this century as the climate changes. Our reported distributional patterns of species rarity align with the known trends in species richness of other freshwater organisms and may help conservation planners make informed decisions mitigating the effects of climate change and other anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity.
