Abstract:The spontaneous directional movement of water droplets on a wedge-shaped groove has gained extensive attention due to the advantage of not requiring energy input and its potential wide applications. However, manipulating the direction of movement of water droplets on a wedge-shaped groove has been not fully achieved, and the fundamental understanding of its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, molecular dynamics simulations and theoretical analyses are combined to reveal the mechanism of movement in opposite directions of a water droplet at the same position on the wedge-shaped groove interface. It is shown that the moving direction of the water droplet is related to its wetting state on the surface, i.e., the Wenzel and the Cassie states. A water droplet initially in the Wenzel and Cassie states will move toward the diverging and the converging ends, respectively. This phenomenon is attributed to the opposite roles played by the groove substrate and the upper layers in the two wetting states. Moreover, it is found that the water droplet is likely to move faster on a surface with a higher groove, larger opening angle and stronger hydrophobicity. These findings are expected to be of benefit for fully understanding droplet movement and shedding light on the regulation of the direction of movement of the droplets on the groove surface.

Abstract:Functional surfaces attract considerable research interest because of many practical applications. A wedge-shaped functional surface is a typical example, which can be designed to achieve self-cleaning, water collection, heat dissipation, or separation of mixed droplets, depending on the wettability of wedge-shaped areas inset in a hydrophobic substrate surface. In this work, a simple technology is proposed to achieve a wedge-shaped functional surface, which could realize directional transport of droplets. It is found that the transport behavior of droplets depends significantly on the wedge angle, the static contact angle of the wedge-shaped hydrophilic region, and the droplet volume. An approximate theoretical model is established, which can predict the most important parameter, that is, the transport displacement. The theoretical prediction can be verified experimentally. Furthermore, an interesting phenomenon of multistep acceleration is also observed in the transport process. With the aid of the present simple technology, several functional surfaces for the directional transport of droplets can be well-designed, including root-like patterned surfaces and nonlinear spiral- or curve-patterned surfaces. All the results should be helpful for the flexible design of functional surfaces for droplet transport in microfluidics or lab-on-a-chip applications.
No-Loss Transportation of Water Droplets by Patterning A Desired Hydrophobic Path on A Superhydrophobic Surface

Abstract:The directional transportation of droplets on solid surfaces is essential in a wide range of engineering applications. It is convenient to guide liquid droplets in a given direction by utilizing the gradient of wettability, by which the binding forces can be produced. In contrast to the mass-loss transportation of a droplet moving along hydrophilic paths on a horizontal superhydrophobic surface, we present no-loss transportation by fabricating a hydrophobic path on the same surface under tangential wind. In experimental exploration and theoretical analysis, the conditions of no-loss transportation of a droplet are mainly considered. We demonstrate that the lower (or upper) critical wind velocity, under which the droplet starts on the path (or is derailed from the path), is determined by the width of the path, the length of the contact area in the direction parallel to the path, the drift angle between the path and the wind direction, and the surface wettability of the pattern. Meanwhile, the no-loss transportation of water droplets along the desired path zigzagging on a superhydrophobic surface can be achieved steadily under appropriate conditions. We anticipate that such robust no-loss transportation will find an extensive range of applications.
Directional Movement of Droplets in Grooves: Suspended or Immersed?

Abstract:The behavior of droplets trapped in geometric structures is essential to droplet manipulation applications such as for droplet transport. Here we show that directional droplet movement can be realized by a V-shaped groove with the movement direction controlled by adjusting the surface wettability of the groove inner wall and the cross sectional angle of the groove. Experiments and analyses show that a droplet in a superhydrophobic groove translates from the immersed state to the suspended state as the cross sectional angle of the groove decreases and the suspended droplet departs from the groove bottom as the droplet volume increases. We also demonstrate that this simple grooved structure can be used to separate a water-oil mixture and generate droplets with the desired sizes. The structural effect actuated droplet movements provide a controllable droplet transport method which can be used in a wide range of droplet manipulation applications.
Directional sliding behavior of a water droplet on a wedge-shape patterned functional surface.

Abstract:Wedge-shape patterned functional surfaces have attracted considerable interests, due to the application of directional water droplet transport. It has been found that the directional sliding or rolling of water droplets rather than water film spreading on a functional surface is more popular in many applications due to its efficiency. In order to realize the directional sliding of water droplets, a patterned functional surface is well fabricated in the present study, which consists of a hydrophobic wedge-shaped region and a superhydrophobic region. The directional sliding behavior and its influencing factors of water droplet transport on the functional surface are studied experimentally and theoretically. It is found that the three-phase contact line of the water droplet presents three different shapes in the whole sliding process, which are mainly affected by the instant contact angle at the front and rear edges of the water droplet. The sliding velocity of the water droplet is significantly affected by the wedge angle, while the maximum transport displacement depends not only on the wedge angle but also on the static contact angle of the wedge-shape patterned surface and the volume of the water droplet itself. Further comparison shows that the transport displacement of a sliding water droplet is much larger than that of a spreading one. The results should be helpful for the design of functional surfaces with highly efficient water droplet transport, which are needed in the fields of heat transfer, water collection, and drug delivery.

Abstract:Abstract Directional droplet transport is of great importance to various processes including heat transfer, water harvesting and microfluidics. Here, a facile superhydrophobic opening triangular groove surface was proposed, and the directional transport behavior of droplets impacting on the surface was observed. The results show that the essence of the directional transport on the opening triangular groove surface can be attributed to the interaction between the impinging droplet and the groove sidewall, and the directional transport distance is regulated by the contact area during the interaction. Further, by controlling the depth of triangular groove, the triangular opening angle, the impacting point position and the Weber number, the contact area between the droplet and the groove sidewall during the interaction can be changed, leading to the variation of directional transport distance. This study provides a new method for directional droplet transport on superhydrophobic surfaces and offers more options for the manipulation of droplet behavior.

Abstract:Directional transportation of water droplets on solid surfaces has been extensively studied over the past century owing to its scientific and engineering significances. In contrast to the wettability/stiffness/structure gradient methods, we present a new approach using lubricated carbon fiber tracks. The transportation process with different widths of the fiber, the substrates and the sizes of the droplet is tested and analyzed. Two failure modes of the transportation are characterized, which allows the passage of the droplet with a certain range of sizes. These insights are possible to manipulate droplets directionally and selectively, without changing the substrate. We anticipate that this transportation technique will find an extensive range of applications.

Abstract:Liquids confined between two parallel plates can perform the function of transmission, support, or lubrication in many practical applications, due to which to maintain liquids stable within their working area is very important. However, instabilities may lead to the formation of leaking drops outside the bulk liquid, thus it is necessary to transport the detached drops back without overstepping the working area and causing destructive leakage to the system. In this study, we report a novel and facile method to solve this problem by introducing the wedgelike geometry into the parallel gap to form a parallel-nonparallel combinative construction. Transport performances of this structure were investigated. The criterion for self-propelled motion was established, which seemed more difficult to meet than that in the nonparallel gap. Then, we performed a more detailed investigation into the drop dynamics under squeezing and relaxing modes because the drops can surely return in hydrophilic combinative gaps, whereas uncertainties arose in gaps with a weak hydrophobic character. Therefore, through exploration of the transition mechanism of the drop motion state, a crucial factor named turning point was discovered and supposed to be directly related to the final state of the drops. On the basis of the theoretical model of turning point, the criterion to identify whether a liquid drop returns to the parallel part under squeezing and relaxing modes was achieved. These criteria can provide guidance on parameter selection and structural optimization for the combinative gap, so that the destructive leakage in practical productions can be avoided.
Directional Transportation of Impacting Droplets on Wettability-Controlled Surfaces

Abstract:Although a superhydrophobic surface could realize rapid rebounding (i.e., short contact time) of an orthogonal impacting droplet, the rebounding along the original impacting route may limit its engineering application; in contrast, the directional transportation seems to be more promising. Here, we achieve directional transportation of a droplet impacting a wettability-controlled surface. When the droplet eccentrically impacts on the boundary between the superhydrophobic part and the hydrophilic part, it undergoes spreading, retracting, departure, throwing, and breaking up stages, and finally bounces off directionally. The directional transportation distance could even reach more than ten times the droplet size, considered the adhesion length (i.e., covering length on the hydrophilic part by the droplet at the maximum spreading) is optimized. However, there is a critical adhesion length, above which the directional transportation does not occur. To be more generalized, the adhesion length is de-dimensionalized by the maximum spreading radius, and the results show that as the dimensionless adhesion length increases, the transportation distance first increases and then decreases to zero. Under the present impacting conditions, the optimal dimensionless adhesion length corresponding to the maximum transportation distance is near 0.4, and the critical dimensionless adhesion length is about 0.7. These results provide a fundamental understanding of droplet directional transportation and could be useful for related engineering applications.

Abstract:We introduce multi-gradients including Laplace pressure gradient, wettable gradient and wettable different gradient on a high adhesion surface via special wedge-pattern and improved anodic oxidation method. As a result of the cooperative effect mentioned above, controlled directional motion of a droplet on a high adhesion surface is realized, even when the surface is turned upside down. The droplet motion can be predicted and the movement distances can be controlled by simply adjusting the wedge angle and droplet volume. More interestingly, when Laplace pressure gradient is introduced on a V-shaped wettable gradient surface, two droplets can move toward one another as designed.

Abstract:Directional transportation of liquid droplets plays a significant role in various processes including anti‐fogging, anti‐icing, and materials transportation. Diverse strategies have been developed to achieve lateral bouncing of impacting droplets. However, due to the complexity of the interactions on the interface between a droplet and the solid, quantitatively manipulating the directional movement of the droplet still remains challenging. Here, it is proposed that the directional transportation of a droplet with precise controllability can be achieved by impacting it on a heterogenously wettable surface. It is found that the droplet lateral momentum correlates with the surface area of a geometric region that depends on the position‐coupling between the droplet maximum spreading and the wettability pattern. The well‐controlled droplet directional movement has generality for different Weber numbers and diverse superhydrophilic patterns. Based on this principle, functional materials are orientated to achieve precise positioning of regents for demand‐on chemical reactions, and micro‐floats are driven with different moving velocities. It offers a promising strategy for accurate droplet manipulation based on patterned wettability, which shows great potential in applications such as functional materials transportation, microfluidics, and energy collection and utilization.

Abstract:Directional transportation of a ball-like water droplet on a superhydrophobic (SH) surface has been experimentally demonstrated. A SH surface with a water contact angle of as high as 160 degrees and a sliding angle close to 0 degrees is prepared by a sol-gel method based on removable polymeric nanospheres. A designed path line is then created on the prepared SH surface. The contact angle possesses anisotropy on the patterned SH surface. When the tilted angle of the patterned SH surface and the volume of the water droplet are proper, the sliding of a ball-like water droplet follows the designed line precisely.

Abstract:The controllable spontaneous transport of water droplets on solid surfaces has a broad application background in daily life. Herein, a patterned surface with two different non-wetting characteristics was developed to control the droplet transport behavior. Consequently, the patterned surface exhibited great water-repellant properties in the superhydrophobic region, and the water contact angle reached 160° ± 0.2°. Meanwhile, the water contact angle on the wedge-shaped hydrophilic region dropped to 22° after UV irradiation treatment. On this basis, the maximum transport distance of water droplets could be observed on the sample surface with a small wedge angle of 5° (10.62 mm), and the maximum average transport velocity of droplets was obtained on the sample surface with a large wedge angle of 10° (218.01 mm/s). In terms of spontaneous droplet transport on an inclined surface (4°), both the 8 μL droplet and 50 μL droplet could move upward against gravity, which showed that the sample surface possessed an obvious driving force for droplet transport. Surface non-wetting gradient and the wedge-shaped pattern provided unbalanced surface tension to produce the driving forces in the process of droplet transport, and the Laplace pressure as well is produced inside the water droplet during this process. This work provides a new strategy to develop a patterned superhydrophobic surface for droplet transport.

Driving Droplet by Scale Effect on Microstructured Hydrophobic Surfaces

Abstract:A new type of water droplet transportation on microstructured hydrophobic surface is proposed and investigated experimentally and theoretically - water droplet could be driven by scale effect which is different from the traditional methods. Gradient microstructured hydrophobic surface is fabricated in which the area fraction is kept constant, but the scales of the micro-pillars are monotonic changed. When additional water or horizontal vibration is applied, the original water droplet could move unidirectionally to the direction from the small scale to the large scale to decrease its total surface energy. A new mechanism based on line tension model could be used to explain this phenomenon. It is also found that dynamic contact angle decreases with increasing the scale of the micro-pillars along the moving direction. These new findings will deepen our understanding of the relationship between topology and wetting properties, and could be very helpful to design liquid droplet transportation device in microfluidic systems.

Abstract:The directional and long-range droplet transportation is of great importance in microfluidic systems. However, it usually requires external energy input. Here we designed a wettability gradient surface that can drive droplet motion by structural topography. The surface has a wettability gradient range of over 150° from superhydrophobic to hydrophilic, which was achieved by etching silicon nanopillars and adjusting the area of hydrophilic silicon dioxide plane. We conducted force analysis to further reveal the mechanism for droplet self-propulsion, and found that the nanostructures are critical to providing a large driving force and small resistance force. Theoretical calculation has been used to analyze the maximal self-propulsion displacement on different gradient surfaces with different volumes of droplets. On this basis, we designed several surfaces with arbitrary paths, which achieved directional and long-range transportation of droplet. These results clarify a driving mechanism for droplet self-propulsion on wettability gradient surfaces, and open up new opportunities for long-range and directional droplet transportation in microfluidic system.

Abstract:The phenomenon of spontaneous droplet transport has a wide range of implications in water collection, microfluidic manipulation, oil-water separation, and various other fields. Achieving efficient and controllable spontaneous droplet transport is therefore of paramount importance. This study investigates the potential of surface charge manipulation to enhance spontaneous droplet transport through comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations. Our findings reveal that the surface charge of the substrate significantly influences its wettability, reducing the contact angle of the droplet and increasing both the contact area and interaction energy. Moreover, we introduce a novel approach to enhance droplet mobility by creating a surface charge gradient on the substrate. By introducing bands with varying charges along a specific direction of the substrate, the droplet experiences a force directed toward regions of increasing charge, thereby facilitating its movement. Importantly, the driving mechanism of droplet motion is well explained by combining classical electrowetting theory with the analysis of the droplet's advancing and receding contact angles, which demonstrates that a more pronounced surface charge gradient generates greater force and enhances droplet mobility. These findings offer valuable insights into the design of microfluidic systems and related applications based on electrowetting.
Directional Droplet Transport Mediated by Circular Groove Arrays. Part I: Experimental Findings

Abstract:Directional transport of liquid droplets is crucial for various applications including water harvesting, anti-icing, and condensation heat transfer. Here, bouncing of water droplets with patterned superhydrophobic surfaces composed of circular equidistant grooves was studied. The directional transport of droplets toward the pole of the grooves was observed. The impact of the Weber number, initial polar distance r, and geometrical parameters of the surface on the directional droplet bouncing was experimentally explored. The nature of bouncing was switched when the Weber numbers exceeded We ≅ 20–25. The rebouncing height was slightly dependent on the initial polar coordinate of the impact point for a fixed We, whereas it grew for We > 20. The weak dependence of the droplet spreading time on the Weber number was close to the dependence predicted by the Hertz bouncing, thus evidencing the negligible influence of viscosity in the process. Change in the scaling exponent describing the dependence of the normalized spreading time on the Weber number was registered for We ≅ 25. The universal dependence of the offset distance ΔL of the droplets on the Weber number ΔL/D0 ∼ We1.5 was established. The normalized offset distance decreased with the normalized initial polar distance as ΔL/D0 ∼ (r/S)−1, where D0 and S are the droplet diameter and groove width, respectively. Abstract:The self-propelled movement of droplets is essential for numerous applications. To obtain a microscopic insight on the self-propelling dynamics of droplets, droplet movement under different surface wettability gradients needs to be studied. In this study, a method is proposed to control the droplet motion using a continuous surface wettability gradient via molecular dynamics simulation. The effects of single gradient, continuous gradient, and nonlinear complex wetting gradient on the self-propelling dynamics of droplets are investigated. The results show that the droplet motion can be driven in a directional way by carefully designing the wetting gradient surface. On a single wetting gradient surface, the droplet speed increases with the wettability gradient. On a linear continuous wetting gradient surface, the droplet trajectory is consistent with the gradient direction. On a complex wetting gradient surface, the droplet trajectory can be a circle, a sine function curve, or a U-shaped curve. By ingeniously designing the wetting gradient surface, the proposed method for the self-propelled movement of droplets can be extended to more interesting paths. This study presents a microscopic perspective on the directional self-propelled movement of droplets on surfaces with wettability gradient and provides guidance for the application of droplet directional transport.

Abstract:We demonstrate a facile method to induce water droplet motion on an wedge-shaped superhydrophobic copper surface combining with a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) oil layer on it. The unbalanced interfacial tension from the shape gradient offers the actuating force. The superhydrophobicity critically eliminates the droplet contact line pinning and the slippery PDMS oil layer lubricates the droplet motion, which makes the droplet move easily. The maximum velocity and furthest position of droplet motion were recorded and found to be influenced by the gradient angle. The mechanism of droplet motion on the shape gradient surface is systematically discussed, and the theoretical model analysis is well matched with the experimental results.
