Abstract:Major trauma is a significant risk factor for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). The incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) varies among patients with trauma. The estimated incidence of distal DVT is 58%, while the estimated incidence of proximal DVT ranges from 14.7% to 27.3% (depending on the test used for diagnosing lower extremity DVT [LE DVT] as well as the mechanism of injury). [ 1 , 2 ] The mortality rates among patients with DVT are 3% to 9%. [ 3–6 ]
