Abstract:The risk from natural disasters is incessantly growing with the complex nature of advancing globalization. The escalating change in global climate is a driving factor in increasing floods and hence, flood damage assessment and controls is an utmost necessity. Synthetic aperture radar satellite images have a high spatial resolution acquired in all weather conditions that can be used for regular and timely flood monitoring by preparing flood maps. In this paper, the flood patterns have been obtained by using the processed multi-temporal Sentinel-1A images from Ayodhya and Basti cities of Uttar Pradesh State, India with a time-series analysis. The outcomes achieved from the time series-based temporal signature of various land cover pixels indicated that there is a significant variation of 25 and 20 decibels (dB) in the vegetation regions of these cities, and the water intensity variance has been detected higher during the July and August months in recent years. The deep learning (DL) models such as convolutional neural network (Conv1D) and naïve forecast (NF) have also been utilized to evaluate the efficacy of time series-based temporal signature from Sentinel-1A time-series images to forecast flood trends. It is observed that the Conv1D model is found to perform better and produces higher accuracy in comparison to the NF model, which could be a piece of tangible information to the authorities in decision-making regarding the situation on the ground. In the future, a coherent change detection method can be implemented to detect changes validating with the outcomes from time-series analysis.
