Abstract:This study focuses on applying Qupeiyin, a mobile phone app, to pronunciation teaching among English major students. Through a 16‐week teaching experiment implemented in control and experimental classes among English major freshmen, with the help of pre‐test, post‐test, questionnaire and assisting tools like EXCEL and SPSS, this study concluded that Qupeiyin app‐assisted pronunciation teaching is effective in improving students' pronunciation proficiency in both segmental and suprasegmental features. Students' error rate in pronunciation decreased significantly. The reason for the positive effects in pronunciation teaching are as follows: (1) multimedia learning materials such as colourful pictures and text, interesting music and songs, authentic readings and dialogues in the app attract students and arouse their interest in learning pronunciation through dubbing; (2) the targeted pronunciation knowledge is transformed into an interesting dubbing activity with explicit teaching aims, which renders the pronunciation teaching more intuitive and easier to understand; (3) Qupeiyin divides a short video into multiple utterances of several seconds, and each utterance of the video can be played and repeated over and over again, giving students enough chance to practice each sound and making them more engaged in the practice so that students may not think too much of Chinese pronunciation; and (4) students feel learning while being entertained the dubbing activity is an entertaining activity in itself, they achieve a sense of accomplishment through dubbing without less pressure.

Abstract:In order to facilitate the language rehabilitation of the hearing impaired person,an automatic speech recognition-based computer-aided language learning(CALL)system is designed.Firstly,an utterance database produced by a standard spoken teacher is established and the key pronunciation mouth shape frames are recorded.Secondly,the static and dynamic features are extracted from the utterance database and we apply the continuous density hidden markov model(CDHMM) to imitate Chinese initial,which is trained with embedded training algorithm and performs recognition task with token passing algorithm and recognition network.The outside test recognition rate of the teacher pronunciation is 96.65%,which means that the system can reasonably work as the benchmark system of the Chinese initial pronunciation learning.Finally,the performance comparison experiment based on visual feedback proves that the system can aid the deaf-dumb to recover language ability effectively.

Abstract:A method for automatic pronunciation evaluation is proposed, applying to the learners with Mandarin as a second language learning Chinese. Bilingual language speech database is introduced and the evaluation is divided into two parts, which are the manner of articulation and pronunciation. This paper extracts the parameters of each part and makes use of the improved method based on comparison of speech similarity, an algorithm named Bilingual Dynamic Time Warping. It gets the final result by means of score mechanism. Experiments verificate the validity of the system.

Abstract:Second language (L2) English learners often find it difficult to improve their pronunciations due to the lack of expressive and personalized corrective feedback. In this paper, we present Pronunciation Teacher (PTeacher), a Computer-Aided Pronunciation Training (CAPT) system that provides personalized exaggerated audio-visual corrective feedback for mispronunciations. Though the effectiveness of exaggerated feedback has been demonstrated, it is still unclear how to define the appropriate degrees of exaggeration when interacting with individual learners. To fill in this gap, we interview 100 L2 English learners and 22 professional native teachers to understand their needs and experiences. Three critical metrics are proposed for both learners and teachers to identify the best exaggeration levels in both audio and visual modalities. Additionally, we incorporate the personalized dynamic feedback mechanism given the English proficiency of learners. Based on the obtained insights, a comprehensive interactive pronunciation training course is designed to help L2 learners rectify mispronunciations in a more perceptible, understandable, and discriminative manner. Extensive user studies demonstrate that our system significantly promotes the learners' learning efficiency.

Abstract:The development of electronic teaching tools in the information age has brought about a profound change in the field of education. Especially in middle school English teaching, traditional teaching methods are facing new challenges and opportunities. In recent years, human-computer interaction learning software has gradually become an effective auxiliary teaching tool, which can significantly improve students' English listening and oral speaking abilities through diversified learning resources and personalized learning paths. This study quantitatively analyzed the English listening and oral speaking abilities by purposive sampling, investigated students' learning interests, confidence, and classroom participation of middle school students before and after using the software. The results showed that using human-computer interaction learning software can significantly improve students' listening abilities, oral speaking abilities and learning interests. Regression analysis further indicated that the improvement of oral speaking and listening abilities, as well as the increase in learning interest, had a significant positive impact on students' final grades. This study provided theoretical basis and practical guidance for educators in applying human-computer inte raction learning software to analyze students’ learning situation, evaluate the effectiveness of the software in middle school English teaching.

Abstract:This paper presents an in-depth study and evaluation analysis of the effects of the computer-assisted language teaching method on foreign language learning through its application. Using an empirical research approach, a practical study of computer-assisted English language teaching was conducted to verify the effects of CALL on oral language learning. In exploring the effects of CALL on students’ oral learning, including the effects on fluency, accuracy, and complexity of oral expressions, as well as the effects on learning attitudes, CALL is conducive to improving the fluency of oral expressions, reducing the number of pauses and repetitions in oral expressions, and enabling students to consciously use articulation words to facilitate smooth expressions. CALL is good for improving the accuracy of students’ speech, but it does not play a significant role in grammatical accuracy, and the grammatical errors are mainly in the third person singular of verbs, singular and plural of nouns, and passive voice. The use of CALL in teaching oral expressions does not improve the variety of sentences. However, the application of CALL in oral teaching stimulates students’ enthusiasm for learning, improves their interest in learning spoken English, and increases their confidence in oral expression.

Abstract:The computer multimedia technology has changed the traditional teaching form, especially providing the special form to the Chinese language and literature teaching. By using multimedia technology, Chinese language and literature can make characters more vivid and three-dimensional, which promotes the improvement of teaching efficiency and effect. With the application of multimedia technology in modern teaching, its disadvantages are increasingly exposed, such as distracting students’ attention and weakening the teaching pattern. The Effects of Employing My ET on College Students’ Pronunciation Skills Training in Taiwan

Abstract:The purpose of conducting this research is to realize how EFL college students reinforce their pronunciation skills through the use of the pronunciation software, My ET. Pronunciation is a basic skill for EFL learners to acquire, so that they will be able to conduct a successful oral conversation. In addition, while general EFL learners are able to meet the requirements of specific disciplinary competency, it is also important for those learners who major in English to possess overall English language abilities. And this, in turn, necessitates proper pronunciation skills. In this study, 105 English major students who were originally from vocational high schools with various disciplinary backgrounds participated. They were asked to pursue pronunciation practice autonomously supplemented by My ET. The researcher examined what extent the computer program could enable students become fluent and comprehensible English speakers. The data sources mainly included survey questionnaires, oral exams, and test scores given by the computer system. The findings indicate that most students gradually made some progress on their pronunciation cognition after practicing constantly and utilizing the pronunciation software. However, many students still prefer real human interaction and instruction. In this, the e-learning software can play as a tutoring role and assist students in helping them to improve pronunciation skills at their own pace.

Abstract:With the development of science and technology, computer multimedia has been used widely in every aspect, especially in English teaching. With the combination of computer multimedia and English teaching, English class teaching is no longer boring but full of fun. On one hand, the computer multimedia-assisted English teaching can inspire students’ enthusiasm of learning English, optimize the environment of English class. On the other hand, the computer multimedia-assisted English teaching can improve students’ ability of listening and speaking, develop students’ ideas in English, and improve students’ enthusiasm for communication. Students can learn knowledge and skills in a good environment. The computer multimedia-assisted English teaching has become one of the highlights in English teaching. Abstract:In China, although many college students have achieved good results in English exams, their oral proficiency is relatively weak. With the rapid development of internet information technology, the use of speech recognition technology to improve English oral pronunciation learning has become a research hotspot. The goal of this article is to design a system based on speech recognition and speech synthesis to help learners improve their oral pronunciation. By automatically evaluating learners' pronunciation accuracy and providing targeted correction and training, the system aims to improve learners' pronunciation level. This article adopts the principles and algorithms of speech recognition and speech synthesis. Through speech recognition technology, the system can convert learners' oral recordings into text and evaluate accuracy. By utilizing speech synthesis technology, the system can generate corrected audio based on correction rules to assist learners in pronunciation training. By evaluating and correcting real learners' oral recordings, the system can accurately evaluate learners' pronunciation accuracy and generate targeted corrected audio. Through systematic training and practice, learners' pronunciation level has been effectively improved.

Abstract:At present, computer-aided spoken English learning is becoming increasingly popular among learners. The computer-aided comprehensive analysis tech-nology can evaluate and correct learner's spoken pronunciation, thereby im-proving their pronunciation. Based on computer-aided comprehensive analy-sis, this paper aims to explore the automatic recognition and scoring methods of spoken English in English education. For this, it studies the effective matching of the feedback information with the known pronunciation scoring results, and then develops a computer evaluation plug-in consisting of dif-ferent modules such as user login, English spoken speech acquisition and recognition, voice evaluation, speech broadcast, and spoken dialogue. The research results show that the computer evaluation plug-in matches and compares the extracted feature parameters of input speech with the standard features, scores the spoken language input by the learner, and gives the cor-rect pronunciation so that the learner can get feedback in time. For different stages of English learning, the focus of recognition technology and the spo-ken recognition algorithms applied also vary. The research findings provide theoretical and technical support for oral English recognition, error correction and scoring.

Abstract:English, as China's second language, is a part of the overall quality of the people. Mastering this universal language in the world is required to communicate with the world. The most important purpose of learning a language is to communicate, and listening and speaking ability is the most important language skill. However, under the influence of the test-oriented education model, English teaching in our country places too much emphasis on the cultivation of reading and writing ability and neglects the training of oral expression ability. In this context, this research proposes an oral English teaching assistance program for both teachers and college students and plans to build an artificial-intelligence-based oral English teaching assistance system. The combination of ability and oral English teaching solves the drawbacks of traditional oral English teaching and establishes a new teaching form for college students' oral English teaching. Combined with the popular trend of Internet electronic teaching methods, it realizes a free and online platform for learners to correct and improve pronunciation, laying a certain foundation for the development of mobile online English pronunciation learning in the future and solving the psychological barriers to college students' oral English output.

Abstract:<p>The increasing attention on Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) pronunciation instruction gives us an opportunity to look into the current directions of teaching CFL and the specific instructional pronunciation strategies employed by CFL teachers. This paper offers a review of empirical evidence on the use and impact of instructional pronunciation strategies in the CFL field from 1980 to 2019. Our findings reveal that: (1) controlled segmental-based strategies—such as comparative strategies, listening, and repeating strategies—are used widely and effectively to improve pronunciation of Chinese initials and finals; (2) suprasegmental-based strategies, especially computer-assisted strategies, largely improve CFL students' tone accuracy; and (3) the validity of assessments in quantitative studies needs to be further developed by including comparative groups, making tests before and after instructions, and involving discourse assessment contents.</p>

Abstract:As an international financial centre, Hong Kong is a metropolitan city that has given rise to multilingual characteristics in recent years. In addition to Cantonese and English, which serve mostly as first and second languages, Hong Kong residents have increasingly begun to develop a third or even a fourth language. The biliteracy and trilingualism language (兩文三語) policy encourages Mandarin as the third language. This paper introduces a corpus-based online pronunciation learning platform for Mandarin teachers, learners, and researchers to better understand the major problems encountered by Hong Kong learners of Cantonese in learning Mandarin pronunciation. A phonological corpus was established and analysed in order (a) to identify learners’ recurring difficulties in accurately and appropriately using Mandarin segmental and suprasegmental features and (b) to suggest possible solutions to reduce or eliminate such difficulties. The phonological corpus contains recorded data of four spoken tasks (reading of monosyllabic words, reading of multisyllabic words, reading of a passage, and free speech) from Hong Kong Cantonese college students. The phonological annotations of the recordings mainly focus on two areas of segmental features (vowels and consonants), two areas of suprasegmental features (tone and retroflex finals), and mispronunciation. In addition to the corpus, a pronunciation learning website was developed for learners to (a) practice segmental and suprasegmental aspects of pronunciation through a variety of perception and production exercises and (b) discover the possible causes of common Mandarin pronunciation features found in the corpus. Based on the corpus, 40 datasets were analysed, and a checklist of common Mandarin pronunciation errors made by Cantonese learners was made available for teachers and learners. The use and the evaluation of the pronunciation learning platform will also be introduced and discussed.

Abstract:The development and application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the field of Foreign Language Teaching (FLT) have had a considerable impact on the teaching methodologies in China. With an increasing emphasis on strengthening students’ learning initiative and adopting a “student-centred” teaching concept in FLT, language teachers and researchers in China have resolved to explore effective and appropriate teaching models both in theory and practice. A range of reforms of college English teaching in China has demonstrated the shift of the teaching focus from enhancing students’ reading ability to their listening and speaking abilities. More focus has been put on improving students’ communicative language ability (CLA). This paper aims to examine the feasibility of the student-centred teaching model utilised in an English audio-video speaking class (EAVSC) in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) environments at the authors’ university by carrying out two quantitative longitudinal case studies. Analysis of correlated data shows that this specific teaching model in general is both plausible and effective in improving students’ communicative language abilities, especially in their speaking abilities.

Abstract:Improve students’ oral English expression ability, in order to strengthen the connection between oral English education and English teaching, and achieve the goal of education reform. The analysis of the current situation of English pronunciation education in China shows that the lack of supplementary teaching materials and the high cost of English phonetics are the main reasons for the current decline in English pronunciation education. The development and promotion of speech recognition technology can help reduce the cost of college spoken English and improve college students’ spoken English. The purpose of this article is to study the related applications of speech recognition technology in college oral English pronunciation correction. This paper uses speech recognition technology to analyze and deal with the differences of phoneme expression in spoken English of college students, so as to count the common misunderstandings of English pronunciation and the parts that need improvement. 9 non-native speakers read the text of the experiment aloud. The speakers are all college English proficient, and try not to make mistakes when reading aloud.
