In the same way that he reels off language outside of his own being, he entangles himself in it; and each language draws a magic circle around the people to whom it belongs, a circle one can leave only by leaping into another." This theory of language as a mode of knowledge—a theory that Cassirer extended to all" symbolic forms" and, in particular, to symbols of ritual and myth, that is to say to religion conceived as language-applies also to theories, and in particular to theories of religion as instruments for the construction of scientific facts.
