Abstract:Chinese higher education is undergoing fundamental changes to meet the demand of producing high quantity and quality college students. These changes have significantly impacted the work lives of Chinese faculty members. This study investigated Chinese young faculty's job perceptions using four variables: intrinsic motivation, job burnout, job satisfaction, and turnover. The findings revealed that surveyed faculties had high intrinsic motivation, relatively high professional efficacy, and low turnover. However, they showed job burnout as indicated by emotional exhaustion and they demonstrated moderate intrinsic satisfaction and low extrinsic satisfaction. The study proposed that a healthy academic environment is needed for sustainable scholarship development.

Abstract:Chinese higher education institutions have adopted a US-style tenure track system since the 1990s. This is an important reform aimed at modernizing China’s higher education system. In response, authors have begun to carry out close examination of the career system and analyse its implications in a national context (Republic of China). This study aims to present the key research themes, identify research gaps and offer recommendations from the increasing pool of Chinese-language literature on the tenure track system. A scoping review of Chinese language papers was conducted using the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (including the China Academic Journals Full-text Database, China Core Newspapers Full-text Database, China Doctoral Dissertations Full-text Database, China Masters’ Thesis Full-text Database, and China Yearbooks Full-text Database) (CNKI) database. Four major research themes were identified in Chinese discourse: (1) examining the tenure track system, (2) providing suggestions for better adaptation of the tenure track system in the Chinese context, (3) analysing the negative effects of the tenure track system, and (4) analysing the positive effects of the tenure track system. Generally, authors were concerned with the adaptation and cultivation of the US-originated tenure track system in the Chinese context and emphasized the importance of acknowledging its perceived negative influences on early-career scholars who have not received adequate attention. Overall, the authors demonstrate increasing interest in the tenure track system in China, and the literature is of variable quality. Further empirical studies are needed to analyse, evaluate and guide future improvement of the career system in the Chinese context in practice.

Abstract:In recent decades, many European and Asian universities have reformed their personnel practices from traditional systems, which grant faculty members permanent employment from the time of hire, to tenure-track systems that require passing a review of research achievements. Using personnel system reforms of economics departments in China as a quasi-experiment, we compare effects of tenure-track and traditional personnel systems on faculty’s research productivity, and investigate to what extent does the adoption of tenure-track system contribute to the recent increase in global rankings of China’s economic research. We find that tenure-track faculty publish 67.5 percent more articles in the top and secondary field journals in economics than those hired under the traditional system. Further investigation shows that the positive effect mainly stems from intensified peer competition, research focus shifting, and increased research collaboration. We also find that the tenure-track system generates positive spillover effects on non-tenure-track faculty.

Abstract:This research takes 225 college instructors as samples to develop the "Job Burnout Scale for College Instructors in China". We then used the scale to explore the relationships between job-related stress, occupational commitment and job burnout, especially the mediating effect of job burnout between job-related stress (antecedent) and occupational commitment (consequence). The results show: (a) job-stress, as the antecedent of job burnout, could cause job burnout; that is, the higher job-related stress one perceived, the more severe the job burnout symptoms he/she has; (b) job burnout could lead to the consequence of low occupational commitment.

Abstract:Under pressure to establish world-class universities, higher education institutions are competing for high-level talent and developing increasingly strict performance assessment mechanisms, which may cause academic staff turnover and potential talent loss. This study focuses on academic staff turnover in the context of reforms to the Chinese academic personnel system, featured by the adoption of a tenure track system. By adopting an ecological perspective, this study discerned a systematic influence of personnel system reforms on academic staff turnover across multiple levels of the academic ecosystem, including the social/institutional, organisational, interpersonal, and individual dimensions. The findings unravel possible discourse misalignment at different levels of the academic ecosystem, deepening understanding of the controversies around university personnel reforms. The study contributes to the global literature on academic staff turnover in the context of competition among world-class universities and offer lessons for other countries undergoing similar transformations in their higher education systems.

Stress in the Ivory Tower:An Empirical Study of Stress and Academic Productivity among University Faculty in China

Abstract:As practitioners of teaching and research,faculty constitute a core competitiveness of higher education.However,faculty in China nowadays are overworked and suffered a high level of pressure and distress,as a result of the emphasis on new managerialism and academic capitalism,rapid transitions of social contexts and scientific technologies, as well as organizational changes after the expansion of Chinese higher education. Drawing on a survey of university faculty conducted in 2007,the paper examines the faculty stress by analyzing its components and affecting factors,and discusses shocking effects of overloaded stress on faculty's career development through defining levels of organizational environment and personal characteristics.The paper finds that faculty in different age groups are under varied pressure from teaching,researching and living;those under 40 years old suffer the highest level of stress,41- 55years the middle level,and over 56 years the low level.Expansion of college scale,changes of performance evaluation mechanism,as well as status of marriage, salary,work load,career orientation and promotion are sources affecting faculty stress.The results also indicate that overloaded stress may result in occupational burnout,with little contribution to academic productivity.
The Impact of Excessive WeChat Use on Mental Health among Medical Students: A Representative Nationwide Population-Based Study in China

Abstract:Background: There are few studies of the effects of social media on health. This study examines the adverse mental health effects of excessive WeChat use among Chinese college students. Methods: A cross-sectional multistage survey sampling process was conducted among 11,463 undergraduates from 31 universities in China. Individual information, including demographic characteristics, WeChat use, was obtained by self report. Mental health status was measured by the Chinese Health Questionnaire (CHQ). Both unadjusted and adjusted methods were considered in the analyses. Findings: Of 11,463 mobile phone users, 10,437 (91·0%) used WeChat. High frequency and long-time use prevalence was 19·3% and 31·2% respectively among WeChat users. The multilevel logistic regression model found that the high frequency (OR: 1·27, 95%:C.I: 1·02, 1·56) and long-time use (OR: 1·24, 95%C.I: 1·07, 1·44) were significantly associated with mental health disorders. Interpretation: The findings presented in this study provide new evidence of the harmful effects of excessive WeChat use on mental health among Chinese university students. These findings underscore the importance of preventing excessive WeChat use and can be used to reinforce the need for public education in China. Abstract:In contrast to non-academic labor market, academic labor market is more social-constrained. As a result, academics obtain more job security and stability, and their salaries are less elastic to demand-supply balance. Under the impacts of the academic labor market, the employment policies in research universities are shaped and particularly embodied in the tenure system. The tenure system plays dual roles: protection of academic freedom, and advancement of economic efficiency. In the process of developing a governmental structure for China's modern universities, Chinese universities can learn from international experience by designing a personnel system that combines academic norms and efficiency incentives. It will lead to a system with institutional autonomy,which will be beneficial to the academic freedom and efficiency.

Their high self-positioning makes their desire for success very strong. When faced with economic, academic, employment, emotional and other aspects of pressure, often due to improper handling of psychological problems. With the continuous development of psychology, “overall happiness” has gradually become an important comprehensive psychological index to measure people’s mental health. The intervention of mental health education can significantly improve the level of college students’ mental health and subjective well-being. The intervention of mental health education should become an important content and approach of college students’ mental health education.
The Impacts of Uncertainty Stress on Mental Disorders of Chinese College Students: Evidence From a Nationwide Study.

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationships between the types of stress and students' mental health, to distinguish the effects of stressors on mental health problems, and to explore the important role of uncertainty stress on the development of mental disorders in a nationally representative sample of Chinese college students. Methods: A cross-sectional multistage study was conducted. Participants were 11,954 students, who were recruited from 50 Chinese universities located in 43 cities covering 23 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities across China. The Student Daily Stress Questionnaire (SDSQ) was applied to measure the different types of stress, and mental health status was measured using the 12-item Chinese Health Questionnaire (CHQ). Both unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models were utilized in the statistical analyses. Multilevel analyses were performed to examine the variation of mental disorder at both the individual and university levels. Results: The prevalence of mental disorders was 22.8% (95% CI: 22.0-23.5%). The unadjusted models showed that age, gender, grade, major, and university location and type were the correlates of mental disorders among students. The unadjusted models developed in this research found that study stress, life stress, and uncertainty stress were positively associated with mental disorder. The multilevel logistic regression models showed that uncertainty stress was far more likely to result in students' mental disorders than study or life stress after controlling for university level. The greater the perceived uncertainty stress, the higher the prevalence of mental disorders. Conclusion: This study provides robust evidence of the impact of uncertainty stress on mental disorders among college students. Compared with life and study stress, more attention should be given to uncertainty stress. The information from this study should be helpful when considering effective mental health policies and interventions among college students in China.

Abstract:Tenure provides a permanent position to faculty in higher education institutions. In North America, it is granted to those who have established a record of excellence in research, teaching and services in a limited period. However, in China, research excellence represented by the number of Web of Science publications is highly weighted in the tenure assessment compared to excellence in teaching and services, but this has never been systematically investigated. By analyzing the tenure assessment documents from Chinese universities, this study reveals the role of Web of Science publications in China tenure system and presents the landscape of the tenure assessment process in Chinese higher education institutions.

Abstract:In recent years, with the unremitting advancement of higher education reform, academics have been experiencing stress associated with conducting scientific research. In this study focusing on university teachers in China, we adopted a stepwise regression method and reviewed related literature to construct a mechanism of academic stress and occupational burnout. Specifically, we tested job satisfaction and relative deprivation as mediating and moderating variables and conducted empirical research on 1239 teachers from 15 universities in eastern, central, and western China. Our findings show that: (1) academic stress has a significant positive effect on occupational burnout; (2) job satisfaction has a partial role as the intermediary agent between academic stress and occupational burnout; and (3) relative deprivation positively moderates the relationship between academic stress and job satisfaction, indicating that teachers in universities and colleges are also affected by relative deprivation and the perception of inequity. These findings have significant value in the management of higher education and academic research.

Abstract:Introduction: The intersection of work-family dynamics and job contentment has become a pivotal area of investigation within the higher education landscape, drawing scholarly attention, especially in the Chinese context. This study delves into the intricate relationship between work-family culture and job satisfaction, with a particular spotlight on the mediating influence of perceptions of organizational fairness. The impetus behind this emphasis lies in the burgeoning acknowledgment of organizational justice as a pivotal force shaping employee attitudes and conduct within academic establishments. Method: This research was conducted using two distinct groups. The first group consisted of 1,075 faculty members at Chinese universities, while the second group comprised 972 administrative and technical employees at these institutions. Results: The mediational analyses provided in this study offer an enhanced comprehension of the intricate relationships under discussion. Significantly, the findings reveal that Work-Family Culture plays a crucial predictive role in influencing perceptions of Organizational Justice among both faculty and administrative staff. More importantly, the study uncovers that Work-Family Culture indirectly affects Job Satisfaction through its impact on Organizational Justice. Discussion: This insight underscores the importance of harmonious work-family interactions as a determinant of job-related attitudes and satisfaction levels.

Abstract:The large number of “young professors” is a unique phenomenon in modern China. There is a little research in academia, and most related studies are also under-recognized, and they almost all praise it as a positive result of the “rejuvenation” of the talent. This is not the case. Since the end of the Qing Dynasty,new universities flourished, and high-leveled new scholars were in short supply. The shortage of professors was heavily dependent on returned overseas students. The latter quickly ranked among professors without necessary assessments. Many local scholars were oppressed, which undoubtedly made China ’s teacher evaluation kidnapped by foreign degrees. It not only caused the unevenness of the faculty, but also severely distorted the academic system, worsened the academic ecology and social atmosphere, and even threatened China’s academic autonomy and educational independence fundamentally. This was a last resort to the conditions of a weak foundation and a shortage of talents. Relevant departments, academic communities and people of insight made arduous efforts to this end. Beginning in 1927, under the guidance of rigorism, the evaluation of teachers gradually became more reasonable. In the late 1930s, this effort achieved substantial results, the quality of teachers and academic standards were greatly improved. However, due to the vicissitudes of the times, the dream of national academic independence has finally aborted.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationships among job stress, burnout, depression, and health among university teachers in China. Using a stratified random sampling method, a sample of 300 university teachers completed the Occupational Stress Indicator–2 (OSI–2), Maslach Burnout Inventory–General Survey (MBI–GS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF–36). Path analysis showed that burnout was a mediator among job stress, the occurrence and exacerbation of depressive symptoms, and poor physical health.

Abstract:Two parallel and discrete sectors seem to be emerging in Chinese higher education, both extending to university level. One is academic and “cosmopolitan” in outlook, and supports intensive research. The other is local, and teaching and service oriented. While such a binary approach helps diversify the interpretation of higher education quality and contributes to its relevance, it remains to be tested if China’s tradition of meritocracy and elitism could ultimately drive changes back in the academic direction.
