Cell Death and Disease
Abstract:Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are widely distributed pluripotent stem cells with powerful immunomodulatory capacity. MSCs transplantation therapy (MSCT) is widely used in the fields of tissue regeneration and repair, and treatment of inflammatory diseases. Apoptosis is an important way for tissues to maintain cell renewal, but it also plays an important role in various diseases. And many studies have shown that MSCs improves the diseases by regulating cell apoptosis. The regulation of MSCs on apoptosis is double-sided. On the one hand, MSCs significantly inhibit the apoptosis of diseased cells. On the other hand, MSCs also promote the apoptosis of tumor cells and excessive immune cells. Furthermore, MSCs regulate apoptosis through multiple molecules and pathways, including three classical apoptotic signaling pathways and other pathways. In this review, we summarize the current evidence on the regulation of apoptosis by MSCs.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the dual roles of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the regulation of apoptosis. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following points: 1. **Protecting tissue cells from apoptosis**: Mesenchymal stem cells protect tissue cells through multiple apoptosis - regulating pathways, reducing disease - related cell apoptosis, thereby improving the disease state. 2. **Promoting the apoptosis of specific cells**: Mesenchymal stem cells can not only inhibit the apoptosis of diseased cells, but also promote the apoptosis of tumor cells and over - active immune cells, fighting against autoimmune diseases and tumors. 3. **Molecules and pathways of apoptosis regulation**: Mesenchymal stem cells regulate cell apoptosis through multiple molecules and pathways, including three classical apoptosis signaling pathways (the endogenous pathway, the exogenous pathway, and the endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway) as well as other pathways. By reviewing the current research evidence, the paper summarizes the roles of mesenchymal stem cells in apoptosis regulation and provides a new perspective for future research. These studies are not only helpful for understanding how mesenchymal stem cells exert therapeutic effects through apoptosis regulation, but also provide a theoretical basis for further clinical applications.
