Abstract:Thermal decomposition of isoreticular metal organic frameworks (MOF-5) results in the breaking of carboxylic bridges between organic ligand and Zn4O clusters and producing zinc oxide crystals along with amorphous mesoporous carbon. In this contribution we present a carbonization mechanism for MOF-5, with detailed attention given to the extraction of zinc-based nanostructures and their unique morphology, formed at different temperatures. The temperature induced evolution of zinc oxide nanoparticles presented in this study, allows tailoring of the shape of nanoparticles. The formation of variously shaped zinc oxide nanoparticles is accompanied by the partial degradation of the carbon structure obtained. The data presented allows one to understand the phenomenon of cracking and cavity formation in the carbon structure surface during zinc oxide extraction and the evolution of its shape. Furthermore, the detailed microscopic studies presented here show that the quality of the mesoporous carbons formed from zinc-based MOF is highly related to their carbonization process.
