Abstract:For the past few decades, structured light has been gaining popularity across various research fields. Its fascinating properties have been exploited for both previously unforeseen and established applications from new perspectives. Crucial to this is the several techniques that have been proposed for both their generation and characterisation. On one hand, the former has been boosted by the invention of computer-controlled devices, which combined with a few optical components allow flexible and complete control of the spatial and polarisation degrees of freedom on light, thus enabling a plethora of proof-of-principle experiments for novel and old applications. On the other hand, characterising light beams is important not only for gaining better insights into light's properties but also for potentially being used as metrics. In this perspective, we thus offer our take on a few key applied research fields where structured light is particularly promising, as well as some pivotal generation and characterisation techniques. In addition, we share our vision of where we believe structured light's applications are moving towards.

Abstract:The representation of natural light is placed in the context of architectural drawing, showing that despite the leading role of daylight in architecture, the representation of its phenomenology was limited to the geometric layout of the shadows in space; however, with the addition of IT technology and virtual simulation, this representation takes on a new communicative dimension through the use of realistic images that can represent phenomenology light as it is perceived and assist the architect as an instrument for the correct representation of natural lighting and support for the development of an energy sustainable architecture.

Abstract:The article describes the method of abstract modelling of architectural plasticity. It includes the identification of its general compositional principles and artistic characteristics, united by the concepts of “natural” and “free” and correlated with the stylistic systems of modernism and postmodernism. The demonstration of how various electrical lighting techniques influence the architecture perception is also provided. The authors of this paper reveal peculiarities of the operation of lighting parameters and optical effects in relation to each type of model, including the interaction of external and internal spaces. They also formulate principles of creating dramaturgy and scenario of lighting solutions, and test methods of assessing the emotional perception of illuminated objects. The methodological material presented in this article provides the solution of such tasks as: the perception of architecture as an integral composition, acquaintance with the features of architectural plasticity of different times, the role of light in the perception of an architectural object, the evolution of the use of lighting techniques as a material for creating a work of art. It also describes how some masters work with electrical lighting and daylighting, as well what methods they use to create the dramaturgy of electrical light in experimental lighting solutions and to assess the emotional perception of objects under electrical lighting. The presented methodological approach allows the student to form a professional skill of working with lighting objects and spaces based on the formative properties of composition construction. This, in its turn, increases the quality of designing the architectural environment and reproducing its artistic features by means of electrical lighting.

Abstract:The design of lighting installations on roads and urban infrastructure has strictly followed the regulatory requirements of each country for a long time. Based on the traffic intensity, the presence of pedestrians and the nature of activities within the area, these regulations have been used to establish the luminance or illuminance levels from or on the pavement, the minimum average uniformity, the maximum glare and the minimum energy efficiency. Accurate values of these static parameters are supposed to ensure safety, security, and efficacy, and have traditionally been considered as the main targets of lighting installations. Therefore, compliance with these regulations indicates whether an installation is legal or not. Although this philosophy is operative, the reality is different due to two main issues. First, the progressive ageing of populations, mainly in North America and Europe, the changing circumstances of traffic flow and modalities and the presence of groves or socioeconomic factors, might have a strong impact on the safety, security and sustainability of cities. Secondly, the current regulations leave out perceived safety and security issues, as well as the well-being of people; that is, how people feel about the city independently of real danger. In this research, the Basic Process of Lighting (BPL) is formulated including, for the first time, the human factors involved when people develop their activities under public lighting. Using this framework, the potential factors influencing human wellbeing and feelings are summarized after being rated by people in a survey distributed among 133 participants. The results highlight a higher perceived impact of social factors compared to physical and visual ones.

Abstract:Human beings’ poor night vision and primitive fear of the dark are reflected in an imperative need to use artificial light to illuminate their environment. Outdoor illumination undoubtedly contributes to the enhancement of practical opportunities for social and economic developments. Considered as a necessity, a means of security, and an attraction or valorization, city lighting growth has been literally exponential in the last half century. Beyond the financial and energy resources that it absorbs, the artificial lighting of urban spaces overflows its objective by polluting our nights to the point that, in our modern megacities, the stars disappear. Apart from the fact that stars are no longer visible, the scientific community is increasingly interested in the direct and indirect impacts of artificial lighting on biodiversity. In parallel, some studies have shown recently that stray light may have direct or indirect effects on human health and mood. The scope of this Special Issue, dedicated to the memory of Prof. Abraham Haim and Dr. Thomas Posch, is to put together a series of high-level papers treating light pollution in a holistic manner that goes from technological advances to policies, passing through impacts on biotopes and human health. Beyond its evident scientific interest, this Special Issue is also contributing to awareness raising, aimed at decision- and policy-makers.

Abstract:Practices of outdoor illumination have dramatically changed in the last decades as functional lighting has progressively given way to a more qualitative vision of light. Its traditional role for security purposes has been progressively matched by the use of illumination for city beautification. This is now a major consideration for new lighting strategies. As a result, a growing number of European cities explicitly include the development of nocturnal tourism among the objectives of their lighting policies. However, little attention has been paid by academic research to this growing trend. Focusing on the internationally renowned lighting project ‘Ruta de los Rios de Luz’, this research paper explores the use of lighting design for tourism purposes. Through interviews with individuals who played an important role in the project, the discussion below scrutinizes the lighting design decisions and the economic, environmental and political objectives that inspire the growing utilization of spectacular forms of illumination for tourism purposes.

Abstract:We introduce light diffusion, a novel method to improve lighting in portraits, softening harsh shadows and specular highlights while preserving overall scene illumination. Inspired by professional photographers' diffusers and scrims, our method softens lighting given only a single portrait photo. Previous portrait relighting approaches focus on changing the entire lighting environment, removing shadows (ignoring strong specular highlights), or removing shading entirely. In contrast, we propose a learning based method that allows us to control the amount of light diffusion and apply it on in-the-wild portraits. Additionally, we design a method to synthetically generate plausible external shadows with sub-surface scattering effects while conforming to the shape of the subject's face. Finally, we show how our approach can increase the robustness of higher level vision applications, such as albedo estimation, geometry estimation and semantic segmentation.

Abstract:The paper proposes a method for generalizing and understanding the achievements of modern lighting design by means of classifying light forms and their main features are specified. The variety of types and complexity of light forms are due to avant-garde experiments in the art of the early and mid 20th century and is consistent with the successive change in artistic styles. Advances in computer technology and programming have made it possible to combine lighting elements, visual, colour and optical effects in one form. The new lighting techniques were developed for illuminating the architectural environment, various buildings, structures and forms in the spaces of world exhibitions. In this paper, the following light forms of the urban environment are investigated: projection mapping, light-graphic, light-painting and installation, sculptural, media surfaces and media facades, structural and vertical, energy-saving and virtual. The classification of light forms makes it possible to identify their structure and image, their correspondence to different eras in art, to predict the possibility of their transformation in the perspective of modern visual creativity.

Abstract:Since their beginnings, artificial lighting technologies have been used as a tool by those in power to express their authority and ensure their control of cities. State and commercial hegemony determine urban lighting, which has a substantial spatial, semiotic, emotional, and physiological effect on us. Lighting conditions imposed from the top down inform our bodily experience of the night. LED technology is revolutionizing artificial public lighting. Nevertheless, critical inquiry about its potential uses is sorely lacking. This research will explore the capacity of collective light interventions to turn public spaces into more inclusive nightscapes. It will focus on community-driven projects where the use of lighting contributes to the production of alternative urban experiences. The research engages methodological issues by asking how lighting tools can potentially contribute to community empowerment. Can lighting actions in public spaces propose other ways of interacting and other ways of experiencing the night? This paper revolves around critical lighting practices. It shows how the use of light can foster citizen engagement and ignite new nocturnal imaginaries as the perception of the night is reshaped to restore communities' right to the city. The intention is to bolster critical awareness regarding the use of light and the power underpinning its instrumentalization. This text will also shed light on the effect ephemeral collective light interventions have on public spaces and its perception.

Abstract:The article examines light as a tool of architectural and lighting design and a mean of artistic expression, which creates new social messages and influences environmental objects and the architectural environment. Within the scope of the tool, techniques of artistic lighting are researched and formed, traditional and innovative lighting tools of emotional and figurative formation of the urban and architectural environment from the standpoint of artistic design are determined. Traditional means and devices are lenses, optics, developer, LED and craft lamps. Innovative means and equipment are projectors, lasers, video mapping, theatrical elements, musical accompaniment, interaction through websites and mobile devices, management of the cloud environment using system controls, copywriting based on social messages and senses. As a result of the study, light methods of artistic design were considered, specifically transformation, digital art, emotional disclosure, city landmark, keeper of history, optical metaphor, fusion with nature, and types of artistic lighting were formulated. The analysis of the examples also allowed us to determine specific types of artistic lighting and light artistic effects: functional, atmospheric, optical, media or digital, combinatorial type with shadow and caustic effects. For each type of lighting, unique techniques and means of environment organization are formulated for each of the three levels: urban, architectural and object-spatial. The usage of methods, techniques and tools is possible both combined and separately. Their harmonious implementation and usage form an emotional interactive lighting architectural and urban planning environment with its own atmosphere and rules of perception. Successful operation of certain methods and means within each of the formulated types of environment lighting could express emotionality and social messages. Their organic interaction is possible applying an artistic approach based on the combination of philosophy and social messages with aesthetics and modern technologies and that encourages social responsibility and self-organization.
Human-Centric and Integrative Lighting Asset Management in Public Libraries: Qualitative Insights and Challenges From a Swedish Field Study

Abstract:Traditional reliability evaluation of lighting sources often assesses only 50% of a lamp's volume, which can lead to performance disparities and misapplications due to their limited reflection of real-world scenarios. To address the limitations, it is essential to adopt advanced asset management approaches that enhance awareness and provide a more comprehensive evaluation framework. This paper delves into the nuances of human-centric and integrative lighting asset management in Swedish public libraries, employing a qualitative field study to ascertain the alignment of current practices with these advanced lighting principles. Expanding library services to 20 high-latitude locations (>55° N) in Sweden, our research employed field observations, stakeholder interviews, and questionnaires, coupled with a thorough gap analysis, to understand the current landscape and stakeholder perceptions. Our findings reveal a dichotomy between the existing conditions of library lighting and the stakeholders' experiences and expectations. Despite the intention to create conducive environments, there is a clear disconnect, with overt problems and covert challenges affecting user satisfaction and efficacy of lighting management. Managers, staff, and users reported varied concerns, including eye strain and discomfort, indicative of substantial room for improvement. The study advocates for a paradigm shift in not only lighting asset management but also reliability evaluation of lighting sources, moving toward continuous improvement, and enhanced awareness and training on human-centric and integrative lighting principles.

Abstract:Over the past years, the focus on public spaces and the need for well-designed outdoor environments has been a key focus for those professions working in the sector. There is increasingly a push for more pedestrian-oriented spaces which support movement and activity and also have an extended use after dark. It is increasingly more apparent, however, where the divide exists between areas that are in well-off areas than those in more deprived areas. This is particularly apparent after dark where the lighting design more often than not, creates the most apparent social divides. Lighting becomes cooler, glare is abound, playgrounds are unlit and any sense of human scale is lost with a blanket lighting, or lack of lighting, approach becoming dominant. These spaces of course are not those featured in magazines, blogs or awards ceremonies. These are the spaces that continuously fly under the radar and hinder a bigger positive change. And although, in some cases, best practice guidelines are followed, the end result does not create inviting spaces after dark. We still regularly encounter pedestrian and residential spaces that are lit primarily with bulkheads or streetlights or where the only play areas are dark at 3pm in winter in Northern Europe. These spaces lack atmosphere and character, the very things pedestrian spaces require. With this in mind, we question how lighting design as a profession can evaluate a successfully lit outdoor space. Is it time to develop a new approach that takes into consideration the everyday user experience, not just the technical successes? And can this approach/methodology better inform best practice guidelines for the future and begin to close the gap of lighting inequality by raising the bar? Through our studio's work we have been exploring new methods to engage with the public on topics of lighting both in the UK and in Europe. A number of cities and municipalities are also increasingly working towards a more engagement-oriented approach that demonstrates lighting design in easy to understand terms and installations in situ which in turn helps us as designers better design outdoor spaces for the end users by creating a common language and understanding.

Abstract:Lighting design with low carbon emissions indicates that emphasis in this field has deepened from energy efficiency into resource saving,energy consumption reducing,and greenhouse gas emissions decreasing.Based on this particular point,this paper stresses out several technical methods,among which utilization of natural light in buildings is top priority.Sunshading equipments and light pipes to guide natural light into buildings should be widely developed to reduce reliance of building operation on traditional energy.Research and development into high efficient lighting equipments and multi-purpose lighting control systems is also fully required.Moreover,this paper emphasizes the importance of specific standards of lighting design with low carbon emissions,relevant energy product regulations and economic policies,and also encourages awareness campaigns inside enterprises to accelerate the low carbon lighting progress.

Abstract:Night-time light remote sensing provides a new perspective on human socio-economic activities by detecting the faint light generated by human activities during the hours of darkness. The development of night-time light remote sensing satellite technology has enabled regular and frequent detection across the globe, providing a wealth of data for the assessment of Earth's society. This includes economic development as well as environmental change. Exploring this rich information from night-time light imagery is an important research direction for understanding differences in regions with high night-time light homogeneity. In addition, significant progress has been made in research on the drivers of change in night-time light emission itself and the improvement of night-time light products.

A sense of direction: the directionality of light and the creation of meaning and feeling on stage

Abstract:The direction light comes from is one of its fundamental properties, alongside brightness and colour. However, the directionality of light on stage – the qualities, effects and affects that arise from its directional property – has received little critical attention. In the UK and the English-speaking world more broadly, the discussion of directional light in professionally focused textbooks is generally based on an historical model from the mid twentieth century, developed by Stanley McCandless. This model prioritises a certain type of visibility of the actor and has little or nothing to say about how directionality can contribute to the expressive content of the performance. In this article, I provide a brief overview of directionality from the time European theatre moved indoors, and a critique of the McCandless ‘method’ and lighting systems that derive from it, which are still influential. I go on to propose a new approach to directionality, rooted in the relational – the relationships among light, audience, performer, character, space, the wider cultural context, and changing theatre-making practices. My approach is a phenomenological one, drawing on the experiences of practising lighting designers, to create an initial essay of how we might reconceptualise directionality and how it can create meaning and feeling on stage.
