Abstract:Perovskite solar cells have recently achieved photo-electric conversion efficiency over 19% showing a promising future for a cost-competitive potovoltaic technology. However, the study of perovskite solar cells' stability didn't catch up with the step of efficiency's process, which is the key issue for commercial application of perovskite solar cells. This review discussed the basic issues of the perovskite solar cells' stability under different circumstances, such as oxygen and moisture, UV light, solution process (solvents, solutes, additives), and temperature etc. and summarized how to control the perovskite solar cells' stability under the conditions above. The purpose is to provide a better understanding about perovskite solar cells' stability and the methods to increase the stability of perovskite solar cells under different circumstances.

Abstract:The emergence of lead halide perovskites as light absorbers has enabled low cost and efficient photovoltaics via a simple solution, high‐throughout process. However, the perovskite materials suffer from instability under various environmental stressors, including moisture, oxygen, heat, and irradiation, which heavily hinders the practical application of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this review, the structural and performance instability of perovskites and their degradation causes and mechanisms under different conditions are discussed. The state‐of‐the‐art strategies that stabilize the perovskite layer in solar cells are then summarized; moreover, the microscopic reasons for the improved environmental tolerance are elucidated. Due to the structural tunability of perovskites, the environmental tolerance, which is influenced by defects and extended imperfections in the polycrystalline films, can be enhanced by varying intrinsic factors of component, dimensionality, and crystallinity. Furthermore, the extrinsic factors to improve the environmental tolerance of perovskites are portrayed in terms of surface functionalized molecules, barrier layers, and encapsulants. The mechanism of each method in reducing the environmental sensitivity is highlighted to provide potential guidance in extending the lifetime of perovskite devices. Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as a promising technology for the next‐generation photovoltaic. The instability of PSCs is addressed as the major barrier to commercialization. This review covers the recent progress on strategies of stabilizing perovskite layers and discusses the microscopic mechanism for improved environmental tolerance. A personal perspective on the research direction of stable PSCs is provided.

Abstract:In this review, the factors influencing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is emphasized. The PCE of PSCs has remarkably increased from 3.8% to 23.7%, but on the other hand, poor stability is one of the main facets that creates a huge barrier in the commercialization of PSCs. Herein, a concise overview of the current efforts to enhance the stability of PSCs is provided; moreover, the degradation causes and mechanisms are summarized. The strategies to improve device stability are portrayed in terms of structural effects, a photoactive layer, hole‐ and electron‐transporting layers, electrode materials, and device encapsulation. Last but not least, the economic feasibility of PSCs is also vividly discussed. In parallel with the tremendous progress in the efficiency of perovskite solar cells, research on the issue of instability has attracted enormous attention. In this review, the strategies to enhance the stability from the perspectives of the device structure, the photoactive layer, hole‐ and electron‐transporting layers, electrode materials, and device encapsulation are portrayed.

Abstract:The stability and durability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are two main challenges retarding their industrial commercialization. The encapsulation of PSCs is a critical process that improves the stability of PSC devices for practical applications, and intrinsic stability improvement relies on materials optimization. Among all encapsulation materials, UV-curable resins are promising materials for PSC encapsulation due to their short curing time, low shrinkage, and good adhesion to various substrates. In this review, the requirements for PSC encapsulation materials and the advantages of UV-curable resins are firstly critically assessed based on a discussion of the PSC degradation mechanism. Recent advances in improving the encapsulation performance are reviewed from the perspectives of molecular modification, encapsulation materials, and corresponding architecture design while highlighting excellent representative works. Finally, the concluding remarks summarize promising research directions and remaining challenges for the use of UV-curable resins in encapsulation. Potential solutions to current challenges are proposed to inspire future work devoted to transitioning PSCs from the lab to practical application.

Abstract:The triple-cation mixed halide perovskite Cs-0.05(MA(0.17)FA(0.83))(0.95)Pb(I0.83Br0.17)(3) emerges as one of the most promising candidates for photovoltaics due to superior optoelectronic properties, but the thermal stability is still a major challenge for the viability of perovskite solar cells towards commercialization. Herein, we firstly explore the thermal response of the photovoltaic performances to access device physical changes. It is shown that the efficiency loss originates from decreased charge mobility, increased trap density and generation of PbI2 charge recombination centers near the interface. In-depth analysis of evolutions in morphology, chemical composition, dynamic and electronic structure of the perovskite layer at the nanometer scales indicates that it is initial dangling bonds and vacancies on the imperfect surfaces decrease the activation energy and cause the perovskite decomposition in a layer-by-layer pathway sequentially from the film surface to bulk. Based on the results, a strategy of surface passivation to improve the thermal stability is demonstrated and discussed. This work for the first time provides insights into the physical and chemical change of such triple-cation perovskite and indicates that more effort should be invested in surface treatment for enhancing perovskite device stability.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) provide attractive prospects for the photovoltaic industry, but the harsh preparation conditions and stability of perovskite materials are still the biggest obstacles to the industrialization of PSCs. This review paper compares the differences in composition and working principle between dye-sensitized solar cells and PSC. It also reviews the optimization and development of electron transport layer, perovskite absorbers and hole transport layer in recent years. By analyzing the crystal morphology, grain size, internal and surface defects of each layer, it also highlights that surface/bulk passivation, composition and interface engineering are used to improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency and the stability of devices. At the same time, the research and development direction of PSC is prospected. It is believed that the industrialization of PSC will be accelerated through the efforts of scientists.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are highly efficient and are comparatively cheaper than the large silicon crystals primarily used in solar cells. Their outstanding photovoltaic performance makes them a potential alternative to silicon solar cells. While efficiency and photovoltaic performance have been investigated in recent decades, a knowledge gap on the degradation, economic feasibility and stability of PSCs exists, and their poor stability remains a barrier to commercialization. Thus, this review aims to fill this knowledge gap by focusing on approaches to improve PSCs' thermal and chemical stability, and their economic viability under different conditions. The structure and manufacture of PSCs are also discussed along with an economic analysis of different perovskite devices. Improvements in thermal stability can be reached by incorporating inorganic materials into the PSC. A PSC model optimized with ZnO improves chemical stability by 8% and works well under low temperatures. To make PSCs more economically feasible, certain parts like counter electrodes (CE) and hole transport materials (HTMs) can be replaced with alternative elements like carbon and inorganic HTMs, respectively. PSCs with long durability and high conversion efficiency will expand the commercial prospects for this material. To bridge the lack of knowledge, further investigation is required on the sustainability and longevity of PSCs.

Abstract:In recent years, researchers have made incredible strides in raising the power conversion efficiency (PCE) to a certified PCE record of 25.5% for metal hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the degradation and instability of perovskite film has hindered its commercialization process. Achieving long life-span of PSCs remains to be a big challenge. As one of the notorious factors affecting the stability of PSCs, the moisture damage to the PSC devices cannot be neglected. Herein, the comprehensive effects of moisture on the halide perovskite films are discussed. First, we elucidate the peculiar structural properties of the hydrated perovskites and the corresponding degradation process. Then the carrier dynamics after water invasion are also elaborated including the free carrier density and mobility, decay kinetics and the absorption effect. We further recap the water-induced degradation through point defect processes in different hydrous compounds. On the basis of these analyses, recent measures taken to promote the moisture stability of perovskite thin films and solar cells are then summarized and discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and outlooks towards more stable PSCs are proposed. We believe this review will provide useful insights for future development of stable PSCs for commercial application.

However, perovskite materials and related films/devices all suffer unfavorable instability issues, which largely hamper their commercialization. In this review, research status, main challenges, and possible strategies to overcome the instability issues in PSCs are comprehensively presented and discussed from four main perspectives, including perovskite, charge transport materials, electrodes, and encapsulations. Related testing standards to accurately evaluate PSC lifetime are also summarized to provide essential guidance toward future advancement of stable PSCs.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have developed rapidly in the past decade and its certified power conversion efficiency (PCE) has skyrocketed to 25.7%. Though high PCE has been obtained, the relatively poor long-term device stability still significantly retards the industrial commercialization of this photovoltaic technology. On this account, it is imperative to address the problems of stability issues and achieve high efficiency and high durability simultaneously. In this review, firstly we demonstrate some instability issues and related degradation mechanisms for PSCs, corresponding solutions are summarized as well. Despite the intrinsic instability, encapsulation technique is supposed to be an effective method to improve the long-term stability of PSCs under ambient conditions. Thus, detailed requirements for encapsulation process and encapsulant materials are offered to meet with the environment-sensitive PSCs, especially to temperature, oxygen, moisture and UV light. And a standard protocol for stability tests of perovskite devices is urgently needed to verify the effectiveness of encapsulation and then further accurately select encapsulant materials through comparisons. Herein, we specially presented three currently available encapsulation strategies for perovskite devices, mainly focusing on encapsulation configurations and materials for each type and their roles in preventing the penetration of water vapor and oxygen. In addition, a thorough discussion on the strengths and limitations of different strategies is covered, which helps in the choice of technical route for encapsulation. Finally, a cost-efficient and effective encapsulation method companying with environment-friendly materials is expected to achieve the commercialization of PSCs.

Abstract:Organometal lead halides based perovskite solar cells (PSC) are a recent discovery in photovoltaic technology that have demonstrated impressive power conversion efficiency achieved by cost-effective solution method (e.g. roll-to-roll production) from readily available raw materials. Nevertheless, the PSC devices have shown limited operating life-times due to degradation of the perovskite materials. Since long operational durability is essential for this new and promising PV technology to fulfil its mission to deliver clean, low cost renewable energy, this review presents the most recent research on understanding of the factors that may cause the degradation process in perovskite materials and PSC devices. Strategies that may improve the stability of PSCs through optimization of the device architectures and development of new materials are also discussed.

Abstract:Finding sustainable and renewable energy to replace traditional fossil fuel is critical for reducing greenhouse gas emission and avoiding environment pollution. Solar cells that convert energy of sunlight into electricity offer a viable route for solving this issue. At present, halide perovskites are the most potential candidate materials for solar cell with considerable power conversion efficiency, whereas their stability remains a challenge. In this work, we summarize four different key factors that influence the stability of halide perovskites: (a) effect of environmental moisture on the degradation of halide perovskites. The performance of halide perovskite solar cells is reduced due to hydrated crystal hinders the diffusion of photo-generated carriers, which can be solved by materials encapsulation technique; (b) photo-induced instability. Through uncovering the underlying physical mechanism, we note that materials engineering or novel device structure can extend the working life of halide perovskites under continuous light exposure; (c) thermal stability. Halide perovskites are rapidly degraded into PbI2 and volatile substances as heating due to lower formation energy, whereas hybrid perovskite is little changed; (d) electric field effect in the degradation of halide perovskites. The electric field impacts significantly on the carrier separation, changes direction of photo-induced currents and generates switchable photovoltaic effect. For each key factor, we have shown in detail the underlying physical mechanisms and discussed the strategies to overcome this stability difficulty. We expect this review from both theoretical and experimental points of view can be beneficial for development of perovskite solar cell materials and promotes practical applications.

Abstract:Inorganic–organic metal halide perovskite light harvester-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have come to the limelight of solar cell research due to their rapid growth in efficiency. At present, stability and reliability are challenging aspects concerning the Si-based or thin film-based commercial devices. Commercialization of perovskite solar cells remains elusive due to the lack of stability of these devices under real operational conditions, especially for longer duration use. A large number of researchers have been engaged in an ardent effort to improve the stability of perovskite solar cells. Understanding the degradation mechanisms has been the primary importance before exploring the remedies for degradation. In this review, a methodical understanding of various degradation mechanisms of perovskites and perovskite solar cells is presented followed by a discussion on different steps taken to overcome the stability issues. Recent insights on degradation mechanisms are discussed. Various approaches of stability enhancement are reviewed with an emphasis on reports that complied with the operational standard for practical application in a commercial solar module. The operational stability standard enacted by the International Electrotechnical Commission is especially discussed with reports that met the requirements or showed excellent results, which is the most important criterion to evaluate a device’s actual prospect to be utilized for practical applications in commercial solar modules. An overall understanding of degradation pathways in perovskites and perovskite solar cells and steps taken to overcome those with references including state-of-the-art devices with promising operational stability can be gained from this review.

Abstract:Solar cells based on metal halide perovskites continue to approach their theoretical efficiency limits thanks to worldwide research efforts. The next challenge is to develop perovskite devices that can retain these efficiencies but exhibit acceptable degradation and decent stability for real-life practical applications. The degradation can be triggered and significantly affected by external environmental factors, such as moisture, oxygen, light, and heat. Although the encapsulation allows effective suppression of moisture- and oxygen-induced degradation, the reduction of light degradation and heat degradation is primarily dependent on the improvement of materials and interfaces of cells. Herein, the degradation mechanisms caused by light and heat are elucidated for each of the major layers in the device. The methodologies for the corresponding degradation reduction and stability enhancement are interpreted from compositional and interfacial engineering strategies with quantitative analysis including the site-based substitution in perovskite lattice, doping in charge transporting layers, passivation by using various materials (small molecules, polymers, ligands, perovskite quantum dots, and low-dimensional perovskites), and a protective layer for vulnerable layers. This Review will provide important insight into degradation suppression and stability enhancement of perovskite solar cells and give a clue to optimal design toward high-efficiency and stable devices.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:In recent years, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been considered as one of the most promising photovoltaic technologies due to their solution processing, cost effectiveness, and excellent performance. The highest certified power conversion efficiency (PCE) achieved to date is 25.8%, which is approaching the best PCE of 26.81% achieved for silicon-based cells. However, perovskite materials are susceptible to various aging stressors, such as humidity, oxygen, temperature, and electrical bias, which hinder the industrialization of perovskite photovoltaic technologies. In this review, we discuss the lifetime of PSCs from the perspective of corrosion science. On one hand, benefiting from a series of anti-corrosion strategies (passivation, surface coating, machining etc. ) used in corrosion science, the stability of perovskite devices is remarkably enhanced; on the other hand, given that perovskites are soft crystal lattices, which are different from traditional metals, the revealed degradation processes and specific methods to improve device operation stability can be applied to the field of corrosion, which can enrich and expand corrosion science.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have seen a rapid increase in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over just a few years and are already competing against other photovoltaic (PV) technologies. The PCE of hybrid PSCs exhibiting distinct properties has increased from 3.8% in 2009 to ≈30% in 2023, making it a strong contender for the next generation of PV devices. However, their long-term stability is a critical issue that must be addressed before these devices can be commercialised. This review begins with a discussion of the evolution of different generations of solar cells, and the following part presents details of perovskite characteristics and prospective strategies to improve their performance. Next, the relationship of stability of PSCs with different environmental conditions, including moisture, UV light, and temperature, is discussed. Besides the development of PSC–silicon tandem solar cells, an efficient way to improve PCE is also discussed. Towards the end, we discuss a novel idea of implementing PSCs with a concentrated PV application in order to achieve higher efficiency and compete with other PV technologies by catching incident high-proton density. This review offers perspectives on the future development of emerging PSC technologies in terms of device performance enhancement and improved stability, which are central to tandem and concentrated PSC technology.

Abstract:In the past decade, organic‐inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have made unprecedented progress and recently achieved a high efficiency of over 25%, comparable with commercial silicon solar cells. However, PSCs are still facing poor long‐term stability hindering their commercial application. Because PSCs undergo severe degradation under environmental stress factors, such as moisture, heat, light, and electrical bias. Thus, exploring and evaluating the degradation pathways of perovskites and the degradation mechanisms of PSCs under different environments is quite essential. In‐situ diagnostic techniques could track the real‐time changes of structure, morphology, and optoelectronic properties of the materials in the device during the degradation process induced by stress factors. It has become more and more critical since the dynamical in‐situ observation can help to provide precise evolution of device degradation and enlighten stability improvement schemes. Herein, the progress on in‐situ characterization for understanding the degradation in PSCs is reviewed, including advanced characterization techniques in the aspects of electron microscopy, X‐ray, and optoelectronic spectroscopy. In addition, in‐situ characterization tracking the dynamic degradation process of perovskite material films from typical methylamine (MA) perovskite to formamidinium (FA)‐cesium (Cs) mixed cation perovskite and PSCs dependent on external factors are also discussed. This overview can provide a further understanding of the stability of PSCs and solve the problems on their road to commercialization. Finally, the future perspectives of in‐situ characterization for understanding the degradation of PSCs are provided at the end of this review.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Even though power conversion efficiency has already reached 25.8%, poor stability is one of the major challenges hindering the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Several initiatives, such as structural modification and fabrication techniques by numerous ways, have been employed by researchers around the world to achieve the desired level of stability. The goal of this review is to address the recent improvements in PSCs in terms of structural modification and fabrication procedures. Perovskite films are used to provide a broad range of stability and to lose up to 20% of their initial performance. A thorough comprehension of the effect of the fabrication process on the device's stability is considered to be crucial in order to provide the foundation for future attempts. We summarize several commonly used fabrication techniques – spin coating, doctor blade, sequential deposition, hybrid chemical vapor, and alternating layer-by-layer. The evolution of device structure from regular to inverted, HTL free, and ETL including the changes in material utilization from organic to inorganic, as well as the perovskite material are presented in a systematic manner. We also aimed to gain insight into the functioning stability of PSCs, as well as practical information on how to increase their operational longevity through sensible device fabrication and materials processing, to promote PSC commercialization at the end.

Abstract:Abstract Organometal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation thin-film solar cells. Over the past ten years, the efficiency of PSCs has increased from 3.8% to over 25% through the optimization of the perovskite film formulation and the engineering of suitable fabrication strategies and device architectures. However, the relatively poor long-term device stability, which has not been able to exceed some hundreds of hours until now, represents one of the key aspects still hampering their widespread diffusion to commercial contexts. After briefly introducing the origin and basic mechanisms behind PSC degradation and performance decline, a systematic outline and classification of the available strategies to improve the long-term stability of this class of photovoltaic devices will be presented, mainly focusing on encapsulation procedures. Indeed, the aim of this review is to offer an in-depth and updated account of the existing encapsulation methods for PSCs according to the present understanding of reliability issues. More specifically, an analysis of currently available encapsulation materials and on their role in limiting the penetration of UV light and external agents, such as water vapour and oxygen, will be proposed. In addition, a thorough discussion on various encapsulation techniques and configurations will be presented, highlighting specific strengths and limitations of the different approaches. Finally, possible routes for future research to enhance the effectiveness of the most performing encapsulation procedures will be suggested and new paths to be explored for further improvements in the field will be proposed.
