Abstract:Fix an alphabet $A=\{0,1,\dots,M\}$ with $M\in\mathbb{N}$. The univoque set $\mathscr{U}$ of bases $q\in(1,M+1)$ in which the number $1$ has a unique expansion over the alphabet $A$ has been well studied. It has Lebesgue measure zero but Hausdorff dimension one. This paper investigates how the set $\mathscr{U}$ is distributed over the interval $(1,M+1)$ by determining the limit $$f(q):=\lim_{\delta\to 0}\dim_H\big(\mathscr{U}\cap(q-\delta,q+\delta)\big)$$ for all $q\in(1,M+1)$. We show in particular that $f(q)>0$ if and only if $q\in\overline{\mathscr{U}}\backslash\mathscr{C}$, where $\mathscr{C}$ is an uncountable set of Hausdorff dimension zero, and $f$ is continuous at those (and only those) points where it vanishes. Furthermore, we introduce a countable family of pairwise disjoint subsets of $\mathscr{U}$ called {\emph relative bifurcation sets}, and use them to give an explicit expression for the Hausdorff dimension of the intersection of $\mathscr{U}$ with any interval, answering a question of Kalle et al.~[{\emph <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1612.07982" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1612.07982">arXiv:1612.07982</a>; to appear in Acta Arithmetica}, 2018]. Finally, the methods developed in this paper are used to give a complete answer to a question of the first author [{\emph Adv. Math.}, 308:575--598, 2017] about strongly univoque sets.

A dual basis for the equivariant quantum $K$-theory of cominuscule varieties

Abstract:The equivariant quantum $K$-theory ring of a flag variety is a Frobenius algebra equipped with a perfect pairing called the quantum $K$-metric. It is known that in the classical $K$-theory ring for a given flag variety the ideal sheaf basis is dual to the Schubert basis with regard to the sheaf Euler characteristic. We define a quantization of the ideal sheaf basis for the equivariant quantum $K$-theory of cominuscule flag varieties. These quantized ideal sheaves are then dual to the Schubert basis with regard to the quantum $K$-metric. We prove explicit type-uniform combinatorial formulae for the quantized ideal sheaves in terms of the Schubert basis for any cominuscule flag variety. We also provide an application ultilizing the quantized ideal sheaves to calculate the Schubert structure constants associated to multiplication by the top exterior power of the tautological quotient bundle in $QK_T(Gr(k,n))$.

Abstract:We prove that a finite pointed abelian group generates a finitely axiomatizable variety that has a finite quasivariety lattice. As a consequence, we obtain that a quasivariety generated by a finite pointed abelian group has a finite basis of quasi-identities. The problems arising from the results obtained are also discussed.

Abstract:We characterize $M$-ideals in order smooth $\infty$-normed spaces by extending the notion of split faces of the state space to those of the quasi-state space. We also characterize approximate order unit spaces as those order smooth $\infty$-normed spaces $V$ that are $M$-ideals in $\tilde{V}.$ Here $\tilde{V}$ is the order unit space obtained by adjoining an order unit to $V.$ To prove these results, we develop an order theoretic version of the "Alfsen-Efffros' cone decomposition theorem" for order smooth $1$-normed spaces. (As a quick application of this result, we sharpen a result on the extension of bounded positive linear functionals on subspaces of order smooth $\infty$-normed spaces.)

Equivariant ideals of polynomials

Abstract:We study existence and computability of finite bases for ideals of polynomials over infinitely many variables. In our setting, variables come from a countable logical structure A, and embeddings from A to A act on polynomials by renaming variables. First, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for A to guarantee the following generalisation of Hilbert's Basis Theorem: every polynomial ideal which is equivariant, i.e. invariant under renaming of variables, is finitely generated. Second, we develop an extension of classical Buchberger's algorithm to compute a Gröbner basis of a given equivariant ideal. This implies decidability of the membership problem for equivariant ideals. Finally, we sketch upon various applications of these results to register automata, Petri nets with data, orbit-finitely generated vector spaces, and orbit-finite systems of linear equations.

Abstract:A quasivariety K of algebras has the joint embedding property (JEP) iff it is generated by a single algebra A. It is structurally complete iff the free countably generated algebra in K can serve as A. A consequence of this demand, called "passive structural completeness" (PSC), is that the nontrivial members of K all satisfy the same existential positive sentences. We prove that if K is PSC then it still has the JEP, and if it has the JEP and its nontrivial members lack trivial subalgebras, then its relatively simple members all belong to the universal class generated by one of them. Under these conditions, if K is relatively semisimple then it is generated by one K-simple algebra. It is a minimal quasivariety if, moreover, it is PSC but fails to unify some finite set of equations. We also prove that a quasivariety of finite type, with a finite nontrivial member, is PSC iff its nontrivial members have a common retract. The theory is then applied to the variety of De Morgan monoids, where we isolate the sub(quasi)varieties that are PSC and those that have the JEP, while throwing fresh light on those that are structurally complete. The results illuminate the extension lattices of intuitionistic and relevance logics.

Independence of Essential Sets in Finite Implication Bases

Abstract:A new characterization is given to describe implication bases of a closure system in terms of the system's quasi-closed sets. Using this characterization, it is possible to show that groups of implications corresponding to distinct essential sets are interchangeable across different bases. It follows from this result that the sum of cardinalities of right sides of all implications corresponding to a single essential set in an optimal basis is fixed, solving an open conjecture by K. Adaricheva and J.B. Nation in 2014. These results provider greater insight into the global structure of implication bases.

Abstract:We show that the quasiequational theory of a relatively congruence modular quasivariety of left R-modules is determined by a two-sided ideal in R together with a filter of left ideals. The two-sided ideal encodes the identities that hold in the quasivariety, while the filter of left ideals encodes the quasiidentities. The filter of left ideals defines a generalized notion of torsion.It follows from our result that if R is left Artinian, then any relatively congruence modular quasivariety of left R-modules is axiomatizable by a set of identities together with at most one proper quasiidentity, and if R is a commutative Artinian ring then any relatively congruence modular quasivariety of left R-modules is a variety.

Abstract:Together with Koenig and Ovsienko, the first author showed that every quasi-hereditary algebra can be obtained as the (left or right) dual of a directed bocs. In this monograph, we prove that if one additionally assumes that the bocs is basic, a notion we define, then this bocs is unique up to isomorphism. This should be seen as a generalisation of the statement that the basic algebra of an arbitrary associative algebra is unique up to isomorphism. The proof associates to a given presentation of the bocs an $A_\infty$-structure on the $\operatorname{Ext}$-algebra of the standard modules of the corresponding quasi-hereditary algebra. Uniqueness then follows from an application of Kadeishvili's theorem.

Abstract:In recent years, much work in descriptive set theory has been focused on the Borel complexity of naturally occurring classification problems, in particular, the study of countable Borel equivalence relations and their structure under the quasi-order of Borel reducibility. Following the approach of Louveau and Rosendal for the study of analytic equivalence relations, we study countable Borel quasi-orders. In this paper we are concerned with universal countable Borel quasi-orders, i.e. countable Borel quasi-orders above all other countable Borel quasi-orders with regard to Borel reducibility. We first establish that there is a universal countable Borel quasi-order, and then establish that several countable Borel quasi-orders are universal. An important example is an embeddability relation on descriptive set theoretic trees. Our main result states that embeddability of finitely generated groups is a universal countable Borel quasi-order, answering a question of Louveau and Rosendal. This immediately implies that biembeddability of finitely generated groups is a universal countable Borel equivalence relation. The same techniques are also used to show that embeddability of countable groups is a universal analytic quasi-order. Finally, we show that, up to Borel bireducibility, there are continuum-many distinct countable Borel quasi-orders which symmetrize to a universal countable Borel equivalence relation.

Abstract:A notion of a split quasi-hereditary algebra has been defined by Cline, Parshall and Scott. Du and Rui describe a based approach to split quasi-hereditary algebras. We develop this approach further to show that over a complete local Noetherian ring, one can achieve even stronger basis properties. This is important for `schurifying' quasi-hereditary algebras as developed in our subsequent work. The schurification procedure associates to an algebra $A$ a new algebra, which is the classical Schur algebra if $A$ is a field. Schurification produces interesting new quasi-hereditary and cellular algebras. It is important to work over an integral domain of characteristic zero, taking into account a super-structure on the input algebra $A$. So we pay attention to super-structures on quasi-hereditary algebras and investigate a subtle conforming property of heredity data which is crucial to guarantee that the schurification of $A$ is quasi-hereditary if so is $A$. We establish a Morita equivalence result which allows us to pass to basic quasi-hereditary algebras preserving conformity.

A topological approach to undefinability in algebraic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$

Abstract:For any subset $Z \subseteq \mathbb{Q}$, consider the set $S_Z$ of subfields $L\subseteq \overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ which contain a co-infinite subset $C \subseteq L$ that is universally definable in $L$ such that $C \cap \mathbb{Q}=Z$. Placing a natural topology on the set $\text{Sub}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$ of subfields of $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, we show that if $Z$ is not thin in $\mathbb{Q}$, then $S_Z$ is meager in $\text{Sub}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$. Here, thin and meager both mean "small", in terms of arithmetic geometry and topology, respectively. For example, this implies that only a meager set of fields $L$ have the property that the ring of algebraic integers $\mathcal{O}_L$ is universally definable in $L$. The main tools are Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem and a new normal form theorem for existential definitions. The normal form theorem, which may be of independent interest, says roughly that every $\exists$-definable subset of an algebraic extension of $\mathbb Q$ is a finite union of single points and projections of hypersurfaces defined by absolutely irreducible polynomials.

Abstract:In 2012 Raghavan, Samuel, and Subrahmanyam showed that the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis for the Iwahori--Hecke algebra in type A provides a ``canonical'' basis for the centraliser algebra of the Schur algebra acting on tensor space. In 2022 the second author found a similar result for the centraliser of the partition algebra acting on the same tensor space. Each basis is indexed by permutations. We exploit these bases to show that the linear decomposition of an arbitrary invariant (in either centraliser algebra) depends integrally on its entries, and describe combinatorial rules that pick out minimal sets of such entries.

Abstract:In this paper we identify QD(A,B), the quasidiagonal classes in KK_1(A,B), in terms of K_*(A) and K_*(B), and we use these results in various applications. Here is our central result. Theorem: Suppose that A is in the category of separable nuclear C^*-algebras which satisfy the UCT and A is quasidiagonal relative to B. Then there is a natural isomorphism QD(A,B) = Pext (K_*(A), K_*(B))_0 . Thus quasidiagonality of KK-classes is indeed a topological invariant. We give several applications. Finally, we establish a converse to a theorem of Davidson, Herrero, and Salinas, giving conditions under which the quasidiagonality of A/K implies the quasidiagonality of the associated representation of A.

Abstract:In this paper we study various forms of (hereditary) structural completeness for quasivarieties of algebras, using mostly algebraic techniques. More specifically we study relative weakly projective algebras and the way they interact with structural completeness in quasivarieties. These ideas are then applied to the study of $C$-structural completeness and $C$-primitivity, through an algebraic generalization of Prucnal's substitution. Finally we study in depth dual i-discriminator quasivarieties in which a particular instance of Prucnal's substitution is used to prove that if each fundamental operation commutes with the i-discriminator, then it is primitive.

Abstract:The quotient bases for zero-dimensional ideals are often of interest in the investigation of multivariate polynomial interpolation, algebraic coding theory, and computational molecular biology, etc. In this paper, we discuss the properties of zero-dimensional ideals with unique monomial order quotient bases, and verify that the vanishing ideals of Cartesian sets have unique monomial order quotient bases. Furthermore, we reveal the relation between Cartesian sets and the point sets with unique associated monomial order quotient bases.

Abstract:In this paper we study the field of definition of abelian subvarieties $B\subset A_{\overline{K}}$ for an abelian variety $A$ over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$. We show that, provided that no isotypic component of $A_{\overline{K}}$ is simple, there are infinitely many abelian subvarieties of $A_{\overline{K}}$ with field of definition $K_A$, the field of definition of the endomorphisms of $A_{\overline{K}}$. This result combined with earlier work of Rémond gives an explicit maximum for the minimal degree of a field extension over which an abelian subvariety of $A_{\overline{K}}$ is defined with varying $A$ of fixed dimension and $K$ of characteristic $0$.

Abstract:We consider questions posed in a recent paper of Mandayam et al. (2014) on the nature of “unextendible mutually unbiased bases.” We describe a conceptual framework to study these questions, using a connection proved by the author in Thas (2009) between the set of nonidentity generalized Pauli operators on the Hilbert space of N d-level quantum systems, d a prime, and the geometry of non-degenerate alternating bilinear forms of rank N over finite fields F d . We then supply alternative and short proofs of results obtained in Mandayam et al. (2014), as well as new general bounds for the problems considered in loc. cit. In this setting, we also solve Conjecture 1 of Mandayam et al. (2014) and speculate on variations of this conjecture.
