Abstract:Abstract Squid is one of the export commodities in Indonesia. In general, the use of squid meat, while the ink is only as waste. In fact, Squid ink contain bioactive compound that potential as anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, anti-diabetic,anti-microbial and anti-malaria agents. The purpose of the study is to determine the types of secondary metabolite compounds contained in n-hexane extract of Loligo sp. ink using maceration method to determine its antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli . The results of secondary metabolite compounds obtained from the n-hexane extract of Loligo sp. ink are alkaloid, saponins, glycosides and phenol. The results of antibacterial test against E. coli using the disc method obtained the average of inhibition zone diameter at the concentration of 4% is 6.3 mm (intermediate), concentration of 8% is 7.83 mm (intermediate), concentration of 16% is 14.5 mm (susceptible) and concentration of 32% is 10.83 mm (intermediate). The antibacterial activity in n-hexane extract of Loligo sp. ink is optimal at the concentration of 16% against E. coli bacteria.
Physicochemical characterization and therapeutic potential of ink from squid, Sepioteuthis lessoniana

Abstract:In the current study, the squid, Sepioteuthis lessoniana ink was used as a raw material. It summarizes physicochemical, elemental, and spectral properties (UV/Visible spectroscopy and FT-IR) of crude ink, whereas the biochemical analysis was performed with crude ink (CI) as well as melanin-free ink (MFI). The percentage yield was analyzed using various solvent extracts of CI and MFI. GC-MS was performed for the chemical constituents of the methanolic extract of ink. Furthermore, the methanolic extract was subjected to various biological applications. The physicochemical analysis defines the presence of moisture, ash, extractive value, solubility, and thermal stability of CI. The biochemical analysis reveals protein, lipid, and carbohydrate of 2.5, 2.2, and 2.37 mg/ml for CI and 2.8, 3.7, and 4.51 mg/ml for MFI respectively. The extract showed the highest zone of inhibition at 100 μg/ml. The antioxidant activity reveals the highest percentage of radical-scavenging activity in nitric oxide (NO) (89%), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) assay showed the highest inhibition activity of 0.41 nm at 100 µg/ml. The cytotoxic ability of methanolic extract against MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line revealed an IC50 value of 10.13 μg/ml. Toxicity assay showed increased mortality of Artemia nauplii at higher concentrations (1000 ppm/40%) of extract. These findings indicate that S. lessoniana ink is a novel prospective product that needs to be characterized in order to increase its pharmacological activity. Abstract:Squid (Loligo sp.) is an invertebrate animal, part of the cephalopod class. The squid has a distinctive black ink fluid for self-defense. Squid ink contains melanin compounds that can be used as an antibacterial. Enterococcus faecalis is a bacterium that causes endodontic infection. While Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacterium that causes infection in patients with compromised immune system, and also who using a urinary catheter or intravenous catheter. This study aims to determine whether squid ink can be used as an antibacterial that can suppress the growth of Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. This research was conducted with experimental method, true experimental Post-Test Only Control Group research design. The research by using squid ink was carried out by inserting extract with various concentration (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%) into a petri dish which containing bacterial culture. The final showed that between concentrations of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% were no clear zones, which had been repeated 3 times against Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that there is no bacterial inhibition caused by squid ink against Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Proteomics analysis of crude squid ink isolated from Sepia esculenta for their antimicrobial, antibiofilm and cytotoxic properties

Abstract:The present study deals with the proteomics analysis of crude squid ink isolated from Sepia esculenta for their antibacterial, antifungal, antibiofilm and cytotoxic properties. To achieve this, SDS-PAGE was used to separate proteins as bands, In-gel trypsin digested and analyzed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. A total of 4 bands were identified by MASCOT search analysis namely astacin-like squid metalloprotease type I (ASMT-I), 70 kDa neurofilament protein (NP), uncharacterized protein LOC106181966 isoform X1 (UP-Iso-X1) and Ommochrome-binding protein (Oc-BP). Further, the obtained crude squid proteins were subjected to antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities against pathogenic bacterial and fungal strains respectively. Further, MTT assay was also carried out to deliberately explain the cytotoxic ability of crude squid ink protein against MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines. The results from the study revealed that, the proteins are shown to be toxic against pathogenic strains and breast cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. More importantly, the proteins are well enough to eradicate biofilms substantiated by light and confocal laser scanning microscopic observations. Altogether, the crude squid ink proteins hampered the growth of breast cancer cells with an IC50 value of 65.3 ± 0.46 μg mL-1. In conclusion, it is believed that the proteins from crude squid ink will provide new insights in hampering bacterial biofilms and cancer in near future.

Abstract:Marine environment comprises of many organism which are known to posses bioactive compound as a common means of self-defense or for the protection of eggs and embryos. Class Cephalopods (such as squid and cuttlefish) are notable for their defences, such as jetting escape movements, changes in colouration, toxic venom and inking.This study aims to compare the antibacterial activity of melanin from cuttlefish ink (Sepia sp.) with squid ink (Loligo sp.) against E. coli. Extraction and purification studies were carried out on Sepia and Loligo melanin using a hydrochloric acid 0,5M treatment under mechanical.The melanins were obtained and further evaluated their activity by direct contact methods between melanin and E. coli in nutrient broth.Total microbes was counted by total plate count.Both inks also was tested their activity against E. coli. The results showed that melanin from cuttlefish and squid inks had inhibitory activity at concentrations of 10 mg / ml and 20 mg / mL, respectively reaching 99.99% against E. coli.The inks of both Cephalopods at the same concentration as melanin, did not show any inhibitory activity against E. coli. The melanin of Sepia sp. have a higher antibacterial activity than the melanin of Loligo sp.
Chromatographic Characterization and GC-MS Evaluation of the Bioactive Constituents with Antimicrobial Potential from the Pigmented Ink of Loligo duvauceli

Abstract:Chromatographic characterization and the GC-MS evaluation of the black pigmented ink of Loligo duvauceli in the present study have yielded an array of bioactive compounds with potent antimicrobial property. Facing an alarm of antimicrobial resistance globally, a need for elucidating antimicrobial agents from natural sources will be the need for the hour. In this view, this study is aimed at characterizing the black pigmented ink of the Indian squid L. duvauceli. The squid ink was subjected to crude solvent extraction and was fractionated by silica gel column chromatography. TLC and HPTLC profiles were recorded. Antimicrobial bioassay of the squid ink fractions was done by agar well diffusion method. The antimicrobial fraction was then characterized using GC-MS analysis. The results showed that the n-hexane extract upon column fractionation yielded a total of 8 fractions with the mobile phase of Hex/EtOAc in different gradients. TLC and HPTLC profiles showed a single spot with a retention factor of 0.76. Fraction 1 showed significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Lactobacillus acidophilus and a promising antifungal activity against Candida albicans. The antimicrobial fraction upon GC-MS analysis of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (BEHP) possesses the highest percentage of area normalisation (91%) with other few minor constituents. The study is concluded by stating that the antimicrobial efficacy of the squid ink might be due to the synergistic effects of the phthalate derivative and the other minor volatile compounds analysed in the squid ink.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The squid ink extract is well known for its biomedical properties.OBJECTIVE: In this study, squid Loligo vulgaris was collected from Tuticorin costal water, Bay of Bengal, India.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Proximate composition of the crude squid ink was studied and found to have protein as the major component over lipid and carbohydrates. Further, bioactive fractions of squid ink were extracted with ethanol, and therapeutic applications such as hemolytic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and in vitro anti-inflammatory properties were analyzed using standard methods.RESULTS: In hemolytic assay, the squid ink extract exhibited a maximum hemolytic activity of 128 hemolytic unit against tested erythrocytes. In DPPH assay, the ethanolic extract of squid ink has exhibited an antioxidant activity of 83.5%. The squid ink was found to be potent antibacterial agent against the pathogens tested. 200 μL of L. vulgaris ink extract showed remarkable antibacterial activity as zone of inhibition against Escherichia coli (28 mm), Klebsiella pneumoniae (22 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (21 mm), and Staphylococcus aureus (24 mm). The 68.9% inhibition of protein denaturation by the squid ink extract indicated that it has very good in vitro anti-inflammatory properties. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis of the ethanolic extracts of the squid ink indicated the presence of functional groups such as 1° and 2° amines, amides, alkynes (terminal), alkenes, aldehydes, nitriles, alkanes, aliphatic amines, carboxylic acids, and alkyl halides, which complements the biochemical background of therapeutic applications.CONCLUSION: Hence, results of this study concluded that the ethanolic extract of L. vulgaris has many therapeutic applications such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities.SUMMARY: Squid ink is very high in a number of important nutrients. It's particularly high in antioxidants for instance, which as well all know help to protect the cells and the heart against damage from free radicals. In the present study, the squid ink have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic properties and can be considered as promising the developing the drugs. Abstract:Melanin from squid ink contain bioactive compounds that can be used as antibacterial agents. E. coli and L. monocytogenes are pathogenic bacteria that cause food damage and disease in human so a natural antibacterial compound is required to replace synthetic antibacterial agent for inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Melanin was extracted from squid ink, then it was analyzed quantitavely and qualitatively using phytochemical, testing on antibacterial activity of melanin squid ink against E. coli and L. monocytogenes. The variables measured were yield from melanin, quantitative and qualitative phytochemical test, positive control test of Amoxicilin, negative control test by using HCl and aquabidest, and inhibitory zone melanin from squid ink extract using paper disc method with concentration of 4%; 8%; 16%; and 32% with three replications. The result showed that yield from melanin was 0.692%. Dominant substances found by quantitative phytochemical on melanin squid ink were alkaloids 2390.87±0.77ppm; flavonoids 365.11±0.84ppm; phenols 292.03±0.74ppm; and saponins 173.86±0.66ppm. Qualitative phytochemical test detected steroids and triterpenoids compounds. The inhibition zones from melanin against L. monocytogenes and E. coli were between 2.15–6.18 mm and 1.84–4.69 mm, respectively which is considered as concentration of weak to medium antibacterial activity. Best concentration of melanin from squid ink was 32% on diameter of inhibition zone.

Abstract:The marine environment consists of many organisms recognized to have bioactive compounds as a mechanism of self-defense or protection of eggs and embryos. One of them is cuttlefish (Sepia sp.). This study aimed to determine the potential and bactericidal action of the cuttlefish ink melanin against Aeromonas sp. Ink extraction and purification were carried out to obtain melanin mechanically using 0.5M HCl. The growth patterns of bacteria were studied by the Total Plate Count method, and the bactericidal mechanism of melanin was observed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The results showed that cuttlefish ink melanin inhibited Aeromonas sp. as indicated by the shrinkage of cell size and irregular cell shape. The results of this study are important information for dealing with Aeromonas sp. attack in cultured fish.

Abstract:Melanin is a natural pigment present in plants, animals, humans, and pigment-producing bacteria. Due to their biocompatibility and versatile biological activities, it was heavily used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries and also has market demand. The objective of this study is to develop a strategic method to convert the ink biomass obtained from the Indian squid Uroteuthis duvaucelii into a valuable and sensible healthcare product such as melanin. Initially, the squid was collected and processed and the ink was isolated and the powdered form was purified by 150-μm sieve with the respective procedure. Then, they were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, field electron scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The presence of melanin was confirmed by FE-SEM and the elements present were analyzed using energy-dispersive spectroscopy. In addition, their biological activities such as antioxidant and antibacterial properties were evaluated. DPPH free radical scavenging activity revealed that the powdered ink sample has significant antioxidant potential with increasing concentrations. Also, it showed potent antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus , Klebsiella pneumoniae , Escherichia coli , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. From the present study, we conclude that the melanin was extracted from the Indian squid, and it showed significant antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Furthermore, in the near future, this Uroteuthis duvaucelii biomass has to be studied further to formulate value-added products in healthcare and cosmetics by replacing synthetic compounds and formulations.

Abstract:The business of developing shrimp farming cannot be separated from the existence of disease. In shrimp farming health management, disease prevention strategies can using various methods, one of which is immunostimulant. One alternative immunostimulant source that can be used to improve the body defense system in shrimp is squid ( Loligo sp.) ink extract powder who has antibacterial ability. This study aims to analyze the presence of active compound in squid ink extract powder can be used as an immunostimulant candidate to against shrimp disease. The method used in this research is descriptive explorative and experimental method. This research was conducted with several stages of squid ink extraction until it becomes powder. Identification of squid ink extract powder is using FTIR and LC-MS test. The results showed that the squid ink extract powder contained alkaloid and carboxylic acid from the FTIR test results. Based on LC-MS test results, it was found that squid ink extract powder contained betaine, cinnamic acid, and choline compounds with large amounts of content. Betaine, cinnamic acid, and choline has several biological activity as antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral, antifungal, etc. so that it can be used as an immunostimulant against shrimp disease.
Sulfation of A Squid Ink Polysaccharide and Its Anticoagulant Activities

Abstract:This paper firstly reported the preparation, characterization, and anticoagulant activities of a chemically sulfated polysaccharide isolated from the ink of the squid, Ommastrephes bartrami. The squid ink polysaccharide(SIP) with an unique of trisaccharide repeat 3GlcA beta 1-4 (GalNAc alpha l-3) Fuc alpha 1 (sic)(n) was sulfated with the pyridine-sulfur-trioxide complex in dimethyl sulfoxide ( DMSO) under different conditions. Chemical composition analysis of the sulfated SIPs indicated that the sulfation had no obvious effect on the monosaccharide composition of the polysaccharides but decreased the molecular weight, the molar ratio of monosaccharide unit to sulfate was about 3:2. Structural characterization of sulfated SIPs using IR and NMR spectra indicated that sulfation mainly occurred at the 4, 6-position of GalNAc, so the main structure of the sulfated SIPs were clearly identified as 3GlcA beta 1-4(4,6-SO4-GaINAc alpha 1-3) -Fuc alpha 1. Anticoagulant activity assay of the sulfated SIPs (TBA-1 and DMSO-1) showed they have no obvious effect on TT, but prolong PT and AM. The effects of TBA-1 on inhibition of thrombin(F II a) and F X a activities mediated by antithrombin III or heparin cofactor II were also examined in vitro. The results reveale TBA-1 inhibited both the activities of F II a and F X a obviously. Thus, our results indicate that sulfate SIP is a potential candidate for the prevention of blood coagulant.

Abstract:Vaname shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is an export commodity from the fisheries sub-sector which has high economic value. The development of aquaculture systems from traditional to intensive has the potential for disease attacks. Control of the spread of the disease must be done as early as possible, one method of prevention is using immunostimulants. An alternative source of immunostimulants that can be used to increase the immune system of shrimp is octopus (Octopus sp.) ink. Octopus ink is generally not used or thrown away when the octopus meat is processed. Research on octopus ink is also minimal compared to squid ink and cuttlefish ink. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the potential of octopus ink as an immunostimulant for vaname shrimp. It is known that the content of octopus ink consists mostly of alkaloids, melanin, amino acids, and carboxylic acids. Octopus ink has various roles based on its compound content such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antibacterial, antiretroviral, anticancer, anti-ulcerogenic, anti-inflammatory, antivirus, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-proliferative. From the results of the literature study, it is explicitly necessary to carry out further research to find out more complete compounds content in octopus ink so that its potential as an immunostimulant in vaname shrimp cultivation can be identified more clearly.
Exploring the Potential of Water-Soluble Squid Ink Melanin: Stability, Free Radical Scavenging, and Cd2+ Adsorption Abilities

Abstract:Squid ink melanin can be efficiently extracted from the byproduct ink sac generated during squid processing. As a natural food colorant, it possesses inherent antioxidant properties and the capability to adsorb heavy metals. This study aims to investigate the solubility of water-soluble squid ink melanin (WSSM) obtained from the ink sac, as well as its stability under various conditions including temperature, pH, salt, sugar, potassium sorbate, metal ions, sodium benzoate, sodium sulfite (reducing agent), and hydrogen peroxide (oxidizing agent). Moreover, it explores the scavenging effects of WSSM on free radicals and cadmium ions. The findings suggest that WSSM's stability is insignificantly affected by high temperature, sucrose, and salt. However, acidity, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, sodium sulfite (Na2SO3), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) significantly influence its stability. Most metal ions do not impact the stability of WSSM, except for Fe2+, Fe3+, Al3+, and Cu2+, which result in the precipitation of WSSM. Additionally, WSSM exhibits remarkable antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 0.91, 0.56, and 0.52 mg/mL for scavenging superoxide anion radicals (O2−·), hydroxyl radicals (·OH), and DPPH radicals, respectively. It also demonstrates the ability to adsorb the heavy metal Cd2+, with the adsorption rate gradually increasing with a higher temperature and larger amounts of WSSM added. Infrared spectroscopy analysis reveals the weakening of characteristic peaks (-COOH and -OH) during the process of Cd2+ adsorption by WSSM, while SEM confirms surface roughening and structural damage after Cd2+ adsorption. This study provides valuable insights for the utilization of squid melanin products as natural antioxidants and heavy metal adsorbents in the food industry.

Abstract:The squid, Sepioteuthis lessoniana , is a remarkable fishery product which is exported by many nations for use in industrial production or human consumption. This study focused on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from squid ink (SI) and its wide range of applications. The formation of the nanoparticles was confirmed through UV–Visible spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, SEM with EDX, DLS, and zeta potential analysis. The results showed a strong absorbance peak at 407 nm, the presence of various functional groups, a nanocrystalline structure with a crystalline size of 17.56 nm, spherical-shaped particles with an average size of 76 nm, and the presence of the highest % mass of Ag and uniformly dispersed particles, respectively. The bioactivity of the synthesized squid ink silver nanoparticles was analyzed through antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer, and toxicity studies. The dye degradation assay was also analyzed as a means of wastewater treatment for different industrial dyes. The antibacterial activity showed the highest zone of inhibition of 24 mm at a concentration of 100 μg/ml against Escherichia coli , followed by other tested strains. The nitric oxide radical scavenging assay showed the highest antioxidant activity (92%) at a concentration of 100 μg/ml. The cytotoxic ability of SI-AgNPs against the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line revealed an IC 50 value of 4.52 μg/ml. The toxicity study revealed a dose and time-dependent activity with the LC 50 value of 5.090 and 3.303 mg/ml for 24 and 48 h, respectively. The successful degradation of dyes by SI-AgNPs is attributed to the cooperative action of the electron relay system with Ag as a catalyst and SI as a catalytic support. These findings indicate that SI-AgNPs are a novel potential product that should be further studied to improve its pharmacological, biomedical, and environmental applications.

Abstract:This paper is the first to report the preparation, characterization, and potential biological activities of a chemically sulfated polysaccharide isolated from the ink of the squid, Ommastrephes bartrami. The squid ink polysaccharides (SIPs) were firstly sulfated with the pyridine–sulfur-trioxide complex in dimethyl sulfoxide. Structural characterization of sulfated SIP using nuclear magnetic resonance indicated that sulfation mainly occurred at the 4,6-position of GalNAc. The effects of the sulfated SIP (TBA-1) on tumor cell growth, invasion, and migration were examined in vitro, and its effects on angiogenesis were measured in vivo using the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. TBA-1 did not have any obvious effects on the proliferation of HepG2 tumor cells, but induced the dose-dependent suppression of cell invasion and migration in HepG2. Moreover, TBA-1 obviously inhibited angiogenesis in a CAM model. Thus, our results indicate that TBA-1 is a potential candidate compound for the prevention of tumor metastasis.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationship between the antibacterial activity of aloe and its contents of anthaquinone compounds, measure and compale antibacterial activities of aloin and aloe-emodin, and analyse the effect of glycoside on the antibacterial activity of aloin.METHOD:The antibacterial activities of the extracts from the outer leaf of Aloe saponaria Haw, aloin and aloe-emodin against three Gram-negative and two Gram-positive bacteria were investigated with the method of agar diffusion. The antibacterial effect of aloin on E. coli was further studied with scanning electron microscopy.RESULT:The antibacterial activities of aloe showed to be dependent on the dose of anthraquinone, aloin (1 g x L(-1)) exhibited higher antibacterial activity [inhibition diameter > (7. 1 +/- 0.15) mm] than Aloe-emodin (inhibition diameter < 5.0 mm), and aloin changed the morphology of E. coli and damaged the outer cell structrue.CONCLUSION:Anthraquinone compounds are the active antibacterial components in aloe and aloin is the main active compound. The glycoside makes it easy for aloin to invade cells and enhances its activity.

Abstract:Abstract: Mouthwash could inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in the oral cavity. Albeit, the most widely used today is mouthwash containing clorhexidine that has side effects in prolonged use. Therefore, it is necessary to find new agents as an alternative antibacterial, especially against Staphylococcus aureus. Squid ink is one of the best known seafood used as alternative medicine which has a wide range of therapeutic applications. This study was aimed to evaluate the inhibitory effect of squid ink extract (Loligo sp) on the growth of S. aureus. This was a true experimental study with a post test only control group design. We used modified Kirby-Bauer method using filter papers. Ciprofloxacin antibacterial was used as the positive control and aquadest as the negative control. Extract of squid ink (Loligo sp) and stock of pure bacteria S. aureus bacteria were prepared. The results showed that mean of zone of inhibition of the squid ink extract (Loligo sp) was 11.22 mm which was less than the zone of inhibition of ciprofloxacin. In conclusion, the squid ink extract (Loligo sp) had a moderate inhibitory effect (Himedia category) on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus.Keywords: extract of squid ink (Loligo sp), Staphylococcus aureus, inhibitory effectAbstrak: Salah satu cara penanganan bakteri Staphylococcus aureus dalam rongga mulut ialah dengan menggunakan obat kumur. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui daya hambat ekstrak tinta cumi-cumi (Loligo sp) terhadap pertumuhan bakteri S. aureus. Jenis penelitian ialah eksperimental murni dengan post test only control group design. Metode yang digunakan yaitu metode modifikasi Kirby-Bauer dengan menggunakan kertas saring. Kontrol positif menggunakan antibakteri siprofloksasin dan kontrol negatif menggunakan akuades. Pada penelitian ini digunakan ekstrak tinta cumi-cumi (Loligo sp) dan stok bakteri murni S. aureus. Hasil penelitian mendapatkan bahwa diameter rerata zona hambat dari ekstrak tinta cumi-cumi (Loligo sp) terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri S. aureus sebesar 11,22 mm namun diameter tersebut lebih kecil daripada diameter zona hambat siprofloksasin. Simpulan penelitian ini ialah ekstrak tinta cumi-cumi (Loligo sp) memiliki daya hambat kategori sedang (Himedia) terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri S. aureus.Kata kunci: tinta cumi-cumi (Loligo sp), bakteri Staphylococcus aureus, daya hambat

Abstract:Squid tunics were divided in two batches: freeze-dried and air-dried. Dried squid tunics were directly hydrolyzed with pepsin, Alcalase, and Esperase. Freeze-dried tunics showed better aptitude for hydrolysis than air-dried tunics. Pepsin showed the lowest efficiency in protein breakdown and gave hydrolysates with low antioxidant activity, whereas Alcalase and Esperase peptide fractions showed strong radical scavenging ability, ACE-inhibitory activity, and noticeable antimicrobial properties. B. cereus, B. coagulans, and D. hansenii were found to be the most sensitive bacteria. Dried squid tunics proved to be an alternative to a previously extracted gelatin for obtaining bioactive peptides.

Abstract:Most cephalopods (octopus, squid and cuttlefish) possess an ink sac and their inking behavior is renowned for their anti-predatory defense. The deployment of a small ink cloud by a rapidly moving cephalopod can serve as a decoy that deceives visual predators. Cephalopods can also discharge a significant amount of ink as a smokescreen to startle their enemy and obstruct visual contact, eliminating immediate threats when threatened by predators. Aside from defense purposes, inking by cephalopods serves alternative functions during predation, courtship and agonistic behavior noted by recent studies. Here we show two unique inking behaviors of the pygmy squid which likely increases their mating success rate. The present study suggests that another co-option of inking likely exists in this group of small squid.
