Abstract:The philosophy of Merleau-Ponty originates from the productive revise to the philosophical idea of Husserl. Under the condition that philosophy be faced with the double crisis of human to human and human to nature, Merleau-Ponty guides the phenomenalism to the thought of poesy according to the trace of Heidegger, thus initiates the close relationship of philosophy with non-philosophy, and philosophy with arts. This artistic guidance only has auxiliary value in his early thoughts, but becomes indispensable in the later existentialist construction. Totally speaking, this tendency makes the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty to be a kind of perceptual philosophy and poetics.

Abstract:Scholarly discussions of Merleau-Ponty’s aesthetics tend to focus on his philosophy of painting. By contrast, comparatively little attention has been paid to his philosophy of literature. However, he also draws significant conclusions from his work on literary expression. As I will argue, these reflections inform at least two important positions of his later thought. First, Merleau-Ponty’s account of “indirect” literary language led him to develop a hybrid view of phenomenological expression, on which expression is both creative and descriptive. Second, a study of literature furnished him with the resources to develop a novel account of phenomenological “essences”, which holds that essences are revisable explanations of first-order experience. Both results have been overlooked by commentators. They demonstrate the systematic import of Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of literature and language, and amount to a qualified extension of a basic Husserlian position.

Abstract:Despite increasing application of Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of the body in areas like music education, there remains little philosophical scholarship on music’s role in his philosophy. This is partly because Merleau-Ponty does not write about music in an explicit manner. However, he does open the possibility for such an account via his unconventional yet highly suggestive claim that language and music are both equally “creative” forms of expression. This paper draws out that link between musical and linguistic expression by expounding what Merleau-Ponty views as their shared basis – the corporeal, affective, and transformative dimension of all expression. It locates the core of this expressivity in his rich conception of “silence.” More generally, the analysis reveals how, despite the lack of explicit discussion of music in Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy, when viewed in light of his insights into language and expression, music does feature implicitly in his early and more mature works, being intertwined with his notions of “style,” “gesture” and “flesh” as well as his general critiques of intellectualism and empiricism.

Abstract:Although the issue of expression had already drawn attention of Merleau-Ponty in his early philosophy,it nevertheless became the real focus only in his middle period of study.For Merleau-Ponty,the real moment for revealing of the difficulty of expression as a philosophical issue,lies precisely in the doubts of Cézanne.It is in the painter’s paradox as being a man(rather than a god) while nevertheless attempting to set up the whole world,that the philosopher discovered the real difficulty of existence,namely,the paradox of expression.However,the issue of expression not only contributes in revealing the existential significance of one’s being-in-the-world,but also affords for the philosopher a new breakthrough point to interpret the constitution of a historical-cultural world on the basis of the perceptual world,and also affords for the philosopher new ontological formulations and new modes of interpretation for his later development of a new ontology.In this sense,condensed in the issue of expression,is the implicit skeleton which tackles the central problems in his early and late philosophy,and proclaims his later exploring into the logos of life-world.

Abstract:The paper investigates the relations between perception and language in Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy in the light of the recent publications of the course notes dating back to the early fifties, Le monde sensible et le m onde de l'expression and Recherches sur l'usage litteraire du langage . The first course gives us an articulated conception of expression, which plays a decisive role in explaining the continuity between perception and language. Perception is closely associated with linguistic acts of parole and sharing an expressive, diacritical structure analogous to the one characterizing linguistic meanings. Nonetheless some philosophical problems regarding Merleau-Ponty’s basically phenomenological method of searching for the roots of linguistic meanings in perceptions are considered. In the second course the idea of the two alleged languages finds support and is developed in a more radical direction through Merleau-Ponty’s engagement with the experience of the writer trying to find new words to convey his own experience of the word. This emphasis on the langage conquerant at the expenses of ordinary shared linguistic practices is critically considered, also in the light of other research trajectories followed by the French philosopher in the same period.

Phenomenology and Ontology of Language and Expression: Merleau-Ponty on Speaking and Spoken Speech

Abstract:This paper clarifies Merleau-Ponty’s distinction between speaking and spoken speech, and the relation between the two, in his Phenomenology of Perception. Against a common interpretation, I argue on exegetical and philosophical grounds that the distinction should not be understood as one between two kinds of speech, but rather between two internally related dimensions present in all speech. This suggests an interdependence between speaking and spoken aspects of speech, and some commentators have critiqued Merleau-Ponty for claiming a priority of speaking over spoken speech. However, there is a sense in which Merleau-Ponty is right to emphasize the priority, namely, in terms of the ontological priority of the speaking subject with respect to language understood as a constituted cultural ideality. The latter only maintains its ontological status insofar as it is taken up by a language community. I favorably contrast Merleau-Ponty’s views on this question to those of the late Heidegger and de Saussure, and suggest potential applications of this clarified position for contemporary discussions in philosophy of language.

Abstract:The early Merleau-Ponty’s transcendental phenomenology is founded on the shaping of subjectivity. Yet his idiosyncratic conception of subjectivity is highly controversial. The early Merleau-Ponty’s theory of subjectivity by nature deals with a problem of a concrete form of subjective self-consciousness in a phenomenological way. From this perspective, his conception of subjectivity can be regarded not only as a response to Heidelberg School which concentrates on the problem of non-reflective form of self-consciousness but also as a fundamental criticism of Dan Zahavi’ s phenomenological notion of “minimal self”. On the basis of practical self-consciousness, we will make clear Merleau-Ponty’s fundamental proposition with respect to his notion of subjectivity, that is, “I am a field, I am an experience”. To conclude, we will finally argue that for the early MerleauPonty the notion of subjectivity no more consists of a divine self in the intellectualism but rather a fragile self which constantly strives for coming into existence against all forms of contingent threats.

Au début des années cinquante, cette phénoménologie de l’oeuvre d’art et de la perception esthétique fait place à une philosophie de l’expression. Le point de départ du questionnement artistique change : il est, non plus le sens exprimé, mais l’acte expressif ou créateur. La signification de l’oeuvre d’art se voit dès lors ressaisie à partir du sens d’être de l’artiste : l’oeuvre est une réponse aux manques perceptifs de l’artiste. In the 1940s, the elaboration of a phenomenology of perception led Merleau-Ponty to approach art starting from the work of art and the perceiving subject who receives it, the spectator. From the beginning of the 1950s, this phenomenology of the work of art and aesthetic perception gave way to a philosophy of expression. The point of departure for artistic questioning changes: it is no longer the meaning expressed, but the expressive or creative act. The signification of the work of art sees itself from this moment understood starting from the meaning of being for the artist: the work is a response to perceptive omissions (manques perceptifs) of the artist. At the end of the 1950s, the merleau-pontian progress of thought experiences an ontological turning. Merleau-Ponty wants to regress below the artist, toward Being itself, which imposes itself finally as the true creator. The last merleau-pontian philosophy of art takes from this moment the aspects of a traditional philosophy of inspiration.In questo lavoro cerchiamo di mostrare come l’interrogazione merleau-pontiana attorno all’arte si dispieghi secondo tre movimenti speculativi distinti e successivi. Negli anni Quaranta l’elaborazione di una fenomenologia della percezione porta Merleau-Ponty a esaminare l’arte a partire dall’opera e dal soggetto percipiente che la fruisce, ossia dallo spettatore. All’inizio degli anni Cinquanta, tale fenomenologia dell’opera d’arte e della percezione estetica cede il passo a una filosofia dell’espressione. Il punto di partenza dell’interrogazione artistica cambia: non è più il senso espresso, ma l’atto espressivo o creativo. On the Mutations of the Concept: Phenomenology, Conceptual Change, and the Persistence of Hegel in Merleau-Ponty’s Thought

Abstract:This chapter will be devoted to the itinerary of classical German thought, and especially Hegel, in Merleau-Ponty’s thought. I begin by examining Merleau-Ponty’s initial use of Hegel’s systematic and metaphysicalmetaphysics ideas in phenomenological analyses of behavior (comportement) and perception. Next, I examine Merleau-Ponty’s role in controversies regarding the existentialists’ interpretation and objections to Hegel’s system. I trace his attempts to surmount antinomiesantinomy between subjectivitysubjectivity and system that emerged in the existentialist’s anthropological reading of Hegel. Here Merleau-Ponty focused on linguistics and more general analyses of institution and expression. Finally, I will view the renewed role that classical German philosophy, including Schelling and Hegel, played in his final works. Still reflecting these interests, his writings and lectures engaged in a wide-ranging dialogue with contemporary aesthetics, sciencescience, and philosophy, culminating in an attempt to formulate a new ontologyontology.
Nature, Consciousness, and Metaphysics in Merleau-Ponty’s Early Thought

Abstract:La structure du comportement details consciousness-nature relations by navigating between realist and intellectualist alternatives. A phenomenological reading of form guides its attempt to formulate a view that does not reduce consciousness to matter or perceptual structure to a product of mind. I show that this strategy relies on hitherto overlooked idealist commitments. Forms are perceived objects whose intentional structure is intelligibly organized. Having denied that forms are constituted by mind or emergent from matter, Merleau-Ponty likens form-constitution to an ideal process of intentional self-organization. Despite recognizing that Gestalt psychology develops fruitful models of perceptual self-organization, and adopting the transcendental view that form is significant for consciousness, his revisionary interpretation of form outstrips these accounts’ ontologies of mind and nature, and is better understood in light of a post-Kantian philosophical heritage. These results cast Merleau-Ponty’s relation to the Gestalt, post-Kantian, and phenomenological traditions in new light, challenge naturalizing interpretations of Structure, and motivate a rethinking of the status of metaphysics in his early thought.

Abstract:Merleau-Ponty's relationship with his Sorbonne professor Léon Brunschvicg is usually disregarded or mentioned by scholars as a mere anecdote. Moreover, the rare discussions of the latter's "critical idealism" usually take at face value Merleau-Ponty's partial and biased account. In contrast, this paper argues that in order to understand the genesis of Merleau-Ponty's thought, it is necessary to reassess Brunschvicg's idealism and his views on the relationship between perception and scientific knowledge. Particular attention is drawn to a specific chapter of Brunschvicg's masterwork L'Expérience humaine et la causalité physique, entitled "Théorie intellectualiste de la perception". Therein is articulated the theory of perception that Merleau-Ponty never ceased to contest, and of which his entire oeuvre constitutes a reversal. However, far from highlighting only the elements of opposition, the author also points out the thematic continuity that survives the generational gap between the two authors.
Merleau-Ponty’s Embodied Ontology and Literature: Gesture, Metaphor, Flesh, and Sensible Ideas

Abstract:This essay traces out the importance of the poetic and creative use of language to Merleau-Ponty’s ontology. Why Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of embodiment inevitably had to turn towards a poetic use of language and to see the overlap between literature and philosophy in articulating an ontology is examined. The tie between a deeper sense of metaphor and the structure of the flesh of the world is explored. The attempt to articulate the latent background of perception leads to the essential role of what will be called the “physiognomic imagination”, which is a different use of imagination than “make-believe” and is key to the unfolding of the depths of perceptual sense. Understanding the efficacy of the literary use of language to the manifestation of further sense also requires an understanding of the temporality of the institution and the ongoing becoming of the real in Merleau-Ponty’s ontology. This essay argues that Merleau-Ponty’s turn to poetic language was both a source of his insights for ontology and the way that he came to express his own philosophy as a necessary outcome of fidelity to the phenomenology of perception. Given the parallel structure of the flesh of the world and metaphor, the dialogical nature of the perceptual encounter with the “voice of silence”, and the increasing importance of physiognomic imaginations, the temporality of institution and “sensible ideas” to his indirect ontology, the literary and poetic use of language had to assume a central role in the articulation of the flesh ontology as well as to the further manifestation of sense. This assertion is meant to rectify the reading and commentaries that fail to see this necessity and instead interpret Merleau-Ponty’s increasing use of poetic language as merely a residue of his evolving writing style and not as the necessary outcome of his ontological insights. This essay is also meant to address phenomenologists who fail to turn to literature and the poetic expression of embodied ontology as failing to carry forth Merleau-Ponty’s revisioning of philosophy and centrality of perception and embodiment.

Abstract:In this article I present and discuss a reading hypothesis, according to which, with the purpose of thinking about the genesis of meaning in the lived experience without needing, for that, to resort to the reflexive transparency expedient ensured by the idea of a pure self, Merleau-Ponty promotes a shift in the way of employing the Gestalt notion, which starts to be read from the unconscious drive Freudian theory. Interpreted from psychoanalysis, however, Gestalt's notion would no longer address the lived from a descriptive point of view and would assume a dynamic point of view, which Merleau-Ponty (1964a, p. 165) will call ontological, which, in turn, it will influence the Merleau-Ponty appropriation of psychoanalysis. Beyond anthropology, psychoanalysis, as a gestalt (or ontological) reading of the way the lived is articulated, would become a form of philosophy (MERLEAU-PONTY, 1964a, p. 323), the presentation of Being as a process of differentiation between incarnated signifiers, which would configure a “primary symbolism”. And my greatest interest, with this hypothesis, is to measure to what extent, with this approaching strategy between gestalt and psychoanalytic operators, Merleau-Ponty manages to solve a problem that he himself faced in his way of understanding how it is possible to have singularity in a context of production of spontaneous and generic meanings wholes. This means asking: in what sense the notion of gestalt whole clarifies what is the intimacy that, for example, psychoanalysis believes it can hear from the people?

Abstract:"Operative Speech as a Specification of Motor Intentionality in Merleau-Ponty. This paper outlines Merleau-Ponty’s interpretation of higher-order cognition as a fundamentally embodied process that is enacted by motor subject situated in natural and cultural environment. More specifically, I exemplify Merleau-Ponty’s interdisciplinary approach to cognition on his interpretations of motor intentionality, operative speech, and mathematical reasoning, which are based on neuropathology, linguistics, and gestalt psychology, respectively. In this analysis, I aim to show that the body is involved in cognition as an operator of the phenomenal structuration of the environment even at the level of linguistic, rational, and abstract experience. Literature, Ontology, and Implex in Merleau-Ponty: Writing and Finding the Concrete Limit of Phenomena

Abstract:This paper examines the ambiguous relationship between the literary uses of language in Merleau-Ponty’s own work and his ontology. It is argued that Merleau-Ponty’s critique of phenomenology—that is, his critique of an already critical philosophy—leads him to say that the limits of phenomena are inside the entire structure of the phenomena. They are, in other words, promiscuous or dehiscent and therefore are not limits that can themselves be given. Merleau-Ponty would say that such limits are silent or mute within meaning. This will have repercussions for the very method of phenomenology. It can no longer be a descriptive method, concerned with the givenness of the phenomena, but needs to be matrixed with an expressive method that shows up the impossibility of such a return. This expressive method has to do with what he calls the “implex”—the very bodily limit of the inside and the outside that cannot be thought as one or the other, or even their synthesis. In other words, Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology invites us towards a concrete bodily limit that is, at the same time, a limit to philosophy. In effect, one cannot think of Merleau-Ponty’s ontology of the flesh apart from language, because this ontology, its very concrete crystallization, requires expression and not just description.
Gesturing in Language: Merleau-Ponty and Mukařovský at the Phenomenological Limits of Structuralism

Abstract:This study aims to corroborate Merleau-Ponty's interpretations of fundamental ideas from Saussure's linguistics by linking them to works that were independently elaborated by Jan Mukařovský, Czech structuralist aesthetician and literary theorist. I provide a comparative analysis of the two authors' theories of language and their interpretations of thought as fundamentally determined by language. On this basis, I investigate how they conceive linguistic innovation and its translation into changes in the constituted language and other social codes and institutions. I explain how they elaborate on Saussure's idea of language as a system of oppositions by interpreting cultural innovation as a systematic variation of pre-established social norms and, similarly, linguistic innovation as gesturing within language. Connectedly, I show how Mukařovský's works help clarify Merleau-Ponty's focus on the gestural dimension of language. By discussing the two thinkers' arguments in favour of linguistic innovation, I explore what could be called phenomenological limits of structuralism.

Abstract:The unexpected invention of a game with my grandchildren provided a new way of thinking about the nature of such unpredictable moments in therapy. The experience brought together a number of ideas, considered through the view of language taken by Merleau-Ponty where the chaotic primitive layers that pervade language are seen as having primacy over the rules of linguistics such as those set out by Saussure. Saussure is seen as providing a way of understanding linguistic structure whilst at the same time opening a number of ambiguities that then allow a way for thinking about language differently through Merleau-Ponty's emphasis on the usage of language (la parole) as opposed the structural aspects of language (la langue). Initially, Winnicott's ideas around the 'spontaneous gesture' are utilised to help show how this kind of unpredictable expression appears as something alive. Merleau-Ponty then shows how language as gestural phenomena takes hold of us through our bodies. Further questions then arise about the method in therapeutic practice and research. Here, it is argued that when the method is given primacy over experience, we are in a position that seeks the already known, which will not, therefore, permit some new expression to break through.

Abstract:Henri Meschonnic famously gives specific usage to a repertoire of terms such as subjectivity, continuous, rhythm, historicity, recitative and enunciation . Behind them, there is a project to overcome what he calls the "chain of dualisms" (1988), or the tendency toward dichotomy in theoretical thinking, represented in the language fields by the separations between signifier and signified, oral and written, form and content, and others. Following Philip Wilson's (2012) initiative of applying Ludwig Wittgenstein's concepts of language games and forms of life to translation studies, we seek to draw an analogy between the Wittgensteinian leap from analytics to pragmatics and the Meschonnician leap from sign to discourse, with the aim of investigating the viability of a synthesis of the two authors' ideas as a theoretical and methodological proposition for Translation Studies. Meschonnic proposes that the sign (enunciate) be overcome in favor of discourse (enunciation), which he views as a relationship between language and body. We argue that the linguistic experience, in that light, is akin to a performance and that Wittgenstein, by focusing on the use of language, also favors this idea, which may be a possible key for a theoretical practice of translation.
