Abstract:In this conference paper, we review the 2020 American Thoracic Society International Conference session titled, "What's New in Pulmonary Hypertension Clinical Research: Lessons from the Best s". This virtual mini-symposium took place on 21 October 2020, in lieu of the annual in-person ATS International Conference which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Seven clinical research abstracts were selected for presentation in the session, which encompassed five major themes: (1) standardizing diagnosis and management of pulmonary hypertension, (2) improving risk assessment in pulmonary arterial hypertension, (3) evaluating biomarkers of disease activity, (4) understanding metabolic dysregulation across the spectrum of pulmonary hypertension, and (5) advancing knowledge in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Focusing on these five thematic contexts, we review the current state of knowledge, summarize presented research abstracts, appraise their significance and limitations, and then discuss relevant future directions in pulmonary hypertension clinical research.

Abstract:This Society of Biomolecular Imaging and Informatics (SBI<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">2</a>; <a class="ext-link" href="https://sbi2.org/">https://sbi2.org/</a>) special issue of SLAS Discovery was originally planned to coincide with the seventh annual SBI<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">2</a> conference and exhibit show (SBI<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">2</a> High Content 2020) from September 15 to 17 at the University of Pittsburgh. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and our commitment to the health and safety of the community, the SBI<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">2</a> board of directors canceled the in-person SBI<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">2</a> High Content 2020 meeting in Pittsburgh. SBI<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">2</a> will instead be hosting the annual meeting in a virtual setting, as a free event, going live on September 16 and 17, 2020 (https://sbi2.org/2020-virtual-meeting-letter/), registration open June 1, 2020.

Current Problems in Cardiology

Abstract:We aim to summarize selected late-breaking science on hypertension management strategies and disease presented at the 2023 American Heart Association (AHA) conference. The trials discussed below encompass stricter goals of blood pressure management and were expanded into different population groups from different countries with varied socioeconomic backgrounds and settings, collectively advancing our understanding of hypertension treatment and its impact on public health. We summarized the china rural health care project (CRHCP), a four-year study involving over 34,000 participants in rural China, emphasizing the potential of stricter blood pressure goals in lowering the incidence of all-cause dementia and cognitive impairment. Next, we explore the US-based CARDIA-SSBP study, which highlights the impact of dietary sodium on systolic blood pressure in middle-aged individuals. Through a randomized-order cross-over design, the study provides compelling evidence supporting the effectiveness of sodium reduction as a non-pharmacological approach to blood pressure control. The UK-based POP-HT trial offers critical insights into postpartum women with a history of hypertensive pregnancy. The trial emphasizes the benefits of self-monitoring and physician-optimized antihypertensive titration, showcasing significant blood pressure reductions in the intervention group. Furthermore, the KARDIA-1 study introduces us to Zilebesiran, an innovative RNA interference drug. This phase 2 study highlights its potential for achieving sustained blood pressure reductions and its favorable safety profile, marking a significant step forward in hypertension treatment. Lastly, we expand the practical application of the previously conducted landmark SPRINT trial, which showed cardiovascular benefit with intensive SBP control to less than 120 mm Hg in high-risk non-diabetic patients with hypertension compared with routine BP control to <140 mm Hg. The ESPRIT trial and the IMPACTS trial build upon the SPRINT trial, demonstrating the effects of intensive blood pressure lowering in Asian hypertensive patients and in 36 health care clinics in medically underserved states in the US: Louisiana and Mississippi. The IMPACTS trial and the "Hypertension Treatment in Nigeria Program" demonstrate the effectiveness of implementing comprehensive blood pressure control strategies in real-world settings. These studies highlight the feasibility and scalability of such interventions, especially in low-resource environments, and their potential to significantly improve public health outcomes.

British Society for Matrix Biology Autumn 2020 Meeting: “Basement Membranes in Health and Disease”

Abstract:Report byThe 2020 BSMB Autumn meeting was planned as an in‐person get‐together of matrix biologists with a focus on the important role of basement membranes in health and disease. COVID‐19 put paid to the 'in‐person' part of proceedings, but thanks to the fantastic organizing committee of Dr. Tom Van Agtmael (Glasgow), Professor Rachel Lennon (Manchester) and Dr. Fabio Quandamatteo (Dublin), a three‐day online format was arranged. There were many interesting talks from both established researchers, up‐and‐coming young principal investigators, early career postdoctoral students and students. These results were disseminated to over 250 attendees around the world.

Abstract:Objectives: To review publications in the field of Human Factors and Organisational Issues (HF&OI) in the year 2022 and to assess major contributions to the subject. Method: A bibliographic search was conducted following refinement of standardized queries used in previous years. Sources used were PubMed, Web of Science, and referral via references from other papers. The search was carried out in January 2023, and (using the PubMed article type inclusion functionality) included clinical trials, meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, reviews, case reports, classical articles, clinical studies, observational studies (including veterinary), comparative studies, and pragmatic clinical trials. Results: Among the 520 returned papers published in 2022 in the various areas of HF&OI, the full review process selected two best papers from among 10 finalists. As in previous years, topics showed development including increased use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital health tools, advancement of methodological frameworks for implementation and evaluation as well as design, and trials of specific digital tools. Conclusions: Recent literature in HF&OI continues to focus on both theoretical advances and practical deployment, with focus on areas of patient-facing digital health, methods for design and evaluation, and attention to implementation barriers.

On the opening morning, Miguel Debono (University of Sheffield) spoke to a packed room about the challenges of managing mild autonomous cortisol secretion. He discussed whether conservative management or adrenalectomy provided the best outcome for patients and highlighted emerging pharmacological treatments.

Abstract:This review article introduces some basic studies that were recently published in this journal, as a part of Hypertension Research 2024 Update and Perspectives. Including recent basic research trends in other scientific journals, we would like to summarize basic research on keywords such as hypertension and its associated organ damage, new treatments, and others. It is expected that the accumulation of basic studies will lead to breakthroughs in hypertension treatment in the future and lead to the definitive treatment of hypertension beyond blood pressure control with anti-hypertensive drugs.
